My paternal grandfather was Cornelius Micheal Bresnahan, son of Micheal Cornelius and Johanna nee Breshanan Bresnahan born near Mt. Collins, Ireland in 1884 who emigrated to Chicago, IL around 1910. He came to his uncle Timothy Bresnahan's grocery around 44th and Union. He married Catherine Murphy and established the Mellody Dairy around 56th and Green. Could we be connected?

My name is Carolyn Winey. My daughter Karol Kilker is married to Joseph Philip Craycroft, son of Joseph Paul Craycroft, son of George Hix Craycroft. I have been working with geneaology for many years in my family. I have been trying to get these Craycrofts interested in their family tree. This summer I was at my daughter's home and she and I collected some family names and dates and did some basic searching on the net. I have found your site and have been looking for the information on my son-in-laws immediate family. It seems that it is missing. His father and all of brothers and sisters but one are still alive, it seems a good time to get information. I am wondering if you have any information on these people. Your site just gives that the people are living and nothing more. I read your information on the Great Craycroft Book and found it very interesting. Seems like a common problem. I hope to hear from you should you be interested in this family. Carolyn Winey of Estes Park, Co.

Greetings from New Zealand .
Enjoyed your web pages and photo gallery.
My family is related to the Cracrofts but not sure yet about their origins so your Lincolnshire origins are an interesting starting point for possible connections.I have recently become aware of this branch of the family through my great grandfather's line. His mother was a WILLSON (though most recorders used WILSON - not correct) and his sister was Maria Cracroft HILL; they were from the Bloomsberry area of London I noticed your Robert Wilson CRACROFT - could Wilson be WILLSON?

They next show up on the 1871 census living in the

Many a weekend they would have to be pulled drunk from the dock.Typical Bresnen!!! Would help if i knew where Maurice was born, who his father was and did he have any brothers or sisters.

You spell Bresnan the same way I do. I have been to Ireland 5 times and am in touch with Bresnan family members in the Dublin, Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Borris areas. Our most recent visit was in April 2004, when we had tea with a good number of the cousins.
My grandfather Maurice Bresnan was the only one of his family who immigrated to the U.S. so the descendants of his siblings are all still there. His father was John Bresnan buried at Kyle, Limerick Junction , Co Tipperary.
Maurice had two brothers John and Edward and sisters Mary Browne (Patrick)and Margaret Bresnan
I have no previous history other than of our immediate family which I have mentioned to you.
My grandfather was born in l865 and came to this country about l880's as a railroad telegrapher, which other members of his family in Ireland also did.
His parents had a pub near the Kyle area, out in the country. We visited there and it was still in use.
Maybe you think we have some possibilities as a fit in your family.
The Irish relatives had not paid too much attention to passing on the family history , and when I came there for the first time in l97l were fascinated that one of Maurice's family came to visit. Some of that generation who remembered hearing of him were alive at that time. They were helpful with what they remembered and they are very nice and interesting people. I didn't find any of them in jail. ha.
My two brothers have founded Bresnan Communications in White Plains ,NY, also listed on the internet, and I am a first cousin, once removed to Joan Bresnan, Stanford University Professor also listed on the internet.
I guess that is my introduction. I have not spent much time on the internet, but perhaps will find more time in the near future to do so.

I am trying to learn more about an Ellen Bresnan. I have a record that she was married to what appears to be an Ivan Bresnan from somwhere in Ohio who died in the 1860's. Ellen later (1871) married a Harmon Limes in Louisville Kentucky. I would like to know where in Ohio Ellen (do not know her maiden name) married Mr. Bresnan. I only have some faded pension documents from Harmon Limes to document this. I am actually tracing the Limes line, but thought it would be helpful to more about Ellen Bresnan Limes.
Any thoughts, or help would be most appreciated as I am trying to tie them to families back here in Ohio.
Sincerely,
Linda Ellis

Hello Bob- I am the ninth of the nine children born to James Robert Craycroft (Decatur,Il-born) and Mary Jane McGrath. I commend you for this outstanding site. I recently moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from Orange County, California and now that I'm a bit closer I hope to take a trip to Decatur soon to see my father's birthplace (and hopefully meet some fellow Craycrofts.) In case this helps with any tree-building, I married Barbara Drozd (2nd generation Czechoslovak) in October of 1997. We now have two small children: Ian Thomas Craycroft (age 4) and Diana Grace Craycroft (age 2.) I am hoping to compile as much information about my father, James, as I can in order to provide Ian and Diana as much info as possible since the grandfather died long before they were born. Keep up the great work (I heard about this site from my siblings Michelle, Duncan and Malcolm, as well as my mother.) I will check the site frequently. Take care...Gordon

Daniel Brosnahan and his wife, Catherine Bronaghan nee Barry (both names as spelt on the shipping manifest by the same person) emigrated to Australia on the Conrad in 1840. It is possible that Daniel's father Stephen Brosnahan/Bresnahan was transported out in 1826 for sheep stealing. They came from the same township in Cork, Buttevant, and Stephens wife was Mary (Hay) as was Daniel's mother. There were supposed to be four other children ? what became of them. The spelling of the name was changed to Bresnahan about the time Daniel bought his first parcel of land. The name was pronounced 'Bresnan' when I was a child, but it is pronounced as it is spelt now. Daniel's children by Catherine were John, Daniel Thomas, Edward and Mary. He had another nine by his second wife Anne Duggan, including John (both Johns died young), Patrick, Ellen, Catherine, James, Michael John, Thomas and a couple of others whom I can't recall at the moment.

I am so excited to be in the Cracroft/craft loop. It all began when I obtained a copy of my grandmother's birth cert and found her father's name: Edmund Hynde Bullivant Cracroft.....from there it was a matter of accessing LDS and discovering the numerous generous genealogists, esp Dan Cracraft, happy to share their research work. I hope to be able to contribute more as I explore relevant docs etc. Thank you genealogists everywhere.

Hi Bob, Boy, can I appreciate your introductory comment about researching both limbs of your family tree! If I could go back and start over I would concentrate on one line at a time. I not only started both my maternal and paternal lines, but also my husband's. Finally had to say
"Whoa Nelly" and start concentrating on one line at a time even though I am constantly being drawn into others by family and information I come across about other lines since the high concentration of all my lines is all in Kentucky. Good thing it's become my new obsession.
Take care, Ewing

I have been researching my mother's family. I have been searching for a John P. Craycroft born in either 1815 or 16. In the 1850, Montgomery Co., IL census,he lives near Aaron Craycroft, son of Benjamin. My John P. is not the one listed with Benjamin's first wife. Did that son die? Also, could there be a second son born around 1815, perhaps given the same name? Thank you for all of your work. Finding your sight has really been nice. My grandmother was told when she was a little girl that her Craycroft family had owned a "castle" back in England. Unfortunatly, her father died when she was only 7 and her mother failed to pass on much of his family history. She has long hoped to learn more about her Craycroft family. Thank you, again. If you have any information that might verify the relationship between my John P. and Aarron, please let me know.
Hopeful, Jennifer

Cousin Bob,
It has been a long time in fact far more years than I care to remember. I was watching TV and for what ever reason I decided to go to the computer and see what I could find on the Bresnan Family. A Yahoo search brought me to your site. I found it very informative and interesting. Many of the pictures I have never seen before. You certainly have done a great amount of work and research that I do find very valuable.
As you may or may not know I have been interested in Civil War reenacting since 1981. I have always wonder if any of our ancestors took an active part in the Civil War and if so on what side. I have been ask that many times by spectators at events I have attended as well as students in my History classes. The only connection I have run across is a reference in"The War of the Rebellion" that list a Captain J.B. Bresnan of the 6th Louisiana Infantry. This regiment would be CSA. Have you found out any Civil War connections to the Bresnan Family?
I will continue to check back with your site. Thanks for putting together such an informative site.
Your cousin,
Andrew L. Bresnan

My family came to America in the early 1900's.
We were actually Brosnans upon arrival. Shortly after arriving they changed to Bresnahan. I do have family that is still in Ireland. but go by the names Brosnan and Murphy. All from the County Cork area. I do remember stories of distant relatives who were Bresnahans. My grandfather Timothy Bresnahan had two sons one of which was Edmond Bresnahan who I was told was named after a great relative some where. My father is named Vincent Bresnahan as is still living, but is in his late 60's now. All the old clan the originals have been gone for a long time. I guess what I am most interested in is why the secrecey throughout all the years. They were very clanish and didn't make many friends that were not of Irish decent. I remember the Acient Order of Hibernians as their life was centered around that. As the elders started to die out they put their real names in the obituaries, all except my grandfather who was burried as Bresnahan and would not change his name. I found this very interesting and always have. My children are all now grown and I have time to look into my heritage. So my quest starts here!
Sincerely
Mary G. Welty Bresnahan

I'm not sure if our families are connected, however there are so few Bresnans in Ireland I'm sure we probably are.
My name is Aoife (pronounced ee-fa) Bresnan, I come from Caherline, Co Limerick, Ireland which is approx 2 miles from Hebertstown. My fathers name is Liam (William), his fathers name was William and his father was Jeremiah or Jerry. I know that Jerry spent some time in America, he even married a girl from Herbertstown while over there. Her name was Catherine Baggot. They returned to Ireland this much I know and by all accounts Jerry was an interesting character.
My knowledge of the family is very limited and to be honest I don't think I ever heard of an Edward or Edmond Bresnan, but I will ask my Dad who has long threatened to do some research himself into his ancestry.
Please email me at aoifebrez@hotmail.com
and let me know if I am on a wild goose chase or not.

Tipperary. In the 1901 Ireland census we located Owen Bresnan living in Bruff, Co. Limerick and occupation is listed as dairy herdsman. My research is ongoing, possibly we are Bresnan cousins. Your site is very neat. I have Irish ancestery on my mother's side. Her mother's name was Oliva Minerva Kirkendall. The sad thing is I was never interested enough when my mother was alive to find out about my great grandparents and when they came to this country, so I've really got a handicap from that point. Also my maternal grandfather was German. His name was charles Edward Judson. My father's parents were of English decent,so I could probably spend the next twenty or thirty years looking. Anyway I like your site and wish you continued sucess.

You have a wonderful site, one to be very proud of! I can tell alot of work went into the presentation of all your research. I am not connected to your surnames but still found your page informative. I liked your idea of scanning the vital records and documents, etc. I am not familiar with Web It. Perhaps they have a web site for more info? I found your site through the FreePages Help list. My web page is also on FreePages. My URL is <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~duffy/> I enjoyed my visit. Thanks...Joyce.

I am interested in finding out about my ancestors, but as I am just starting, I can see that the road is quite long. My last name was most likely changed at Staten Island from with Bresnahan or Brosnahan. I am not sure which. But thanks for the great web site! I hope to find some information.

My maternal grandfather's mother was a Ready and her sister married a Bresnahan. Ready is also spelled Reedy and Reidy and Bresnahan was also spelled Brosnahan and Brosnan. They were from North Kerry, Knocknagoshel and Brosna. Came to the US about 1852. Don't see any connection but the combining of the names is interesting. Nice web site.

Very interesting since my grandfather, served on the Shreveport, Caddo Parish, LA, Fire Department under two Fire Chief's named Bresnahan in the 1890's. I believe they were John and Thomnas. In fact he gave one of my uncles the middle name of Bresnahan.
Name: Judith Ann McCoy <judimccoy@juno.com> Date: 2000-08-01 How long have you been interested in genealogy? under 2 years Did you find anything here that helped out? Found the name Craycraft/Craycroft Comments:
I'm looking for a Nancy Craycraft/Craycroft born possibly in 1769, possibly in VA. She married a William McCoy born between 1765 and 1790. A marriage record has been found in Ky of a William McCoy and Anna Craycraft/Craycroft, who is thought to be Nancy. I don't have any more details yet on the Nancy-Anna connection. Wonder if anyone in your Craycraft/Craycroft line is related to her? William and Nancy settled in Spencer Co IN and had at least 13 children. I'm descendant of their son Uriah b. 2 Dec 1808. I have no information on Nancy's parents.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone visiting this site that knows anything about Nancy-Anna Craycraft/Craycroft. judimccoy@juno.com
