When did they come to Hamilton County? Mid 1800s
Comments:
Desperately need help finding info on James Barton Webb b. April of 1850 in Georgia to Lemuel Webb and Martha A. James B. Webb first appears in the 1860 Hamilton Co. census as the son of Lemuel and Martha. In the 1870 Hamilton Co. census he is listed as Barton Webb living with the James M. Davis family. This is where he met Amanda Davis whom he married abt. 1872. Barton and Amanda are the parents of Rosa Webb who married John E. Bell born August 26, 1872 and died Jan. 30, 1957. An article appeared in the Southern Enterprise on December 6, 1876 stating that a Barton Webb was shot and killed on the 17th of November while standing in his door. Chesley Woodward was arrested and lodged in the Jasper jail. This is confusing, and I am trying to find more information about this Barton Webb who was shot and killed. Please help as I am unable to make the trip to Florida to do further research. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am having this open from 3-5 on Sunday at 9902 Towne Road. Please come!
This home was built in 1866
All of the brick on the home 4 deep were baked on the property as well as the stone in the front fence were found on the property. The den (originally the cooking house) fire place has the original hardware used for cooking still in tacked. This home originally was on a 160 acre parcel and the children from the area were taught school in the upstairs bed room where the original chalk board is still there although it is painted over.

I have an interested buyer that wants to turn it into a ballet school.

I would like to get both of your groups together to insure the preservation of the home.
There is 5 fireplaces and the history is all documented. The home is on the talktotucker.com web sight with inside photos.

WHADFORD GENEALOGY GULF-COUNTY QUESTION

Greetings:

RE: William Henry Whadford, 1860’s-1939

My name is Nancy L. Compton and I live in Boise, Idaho and I am researching my maternal genealogy of my great grandfather, William Henry Whadford and I’m hoping you may be able to offer possible guidance to my endless search.

My aunt recounts a story in the late 1960’s when she and my uncle drove from their Colorado home to Walter Reed Medical Center to visit a very ill relative, then down to Miami and back to Colorado. Along their journey, she spotted from the roadway a statue-possible headstone with the name of WHADFORD on it and an old country store with the same name spelled exactly the same way. They were unable to stop and investigate and of course she now wished she had, especially since she doesn't recall the location or travel route they took. I’ve often wondered if what she saw was actually spelled something else; having concentrated on the “Hö beside a “Wö and in her mind she saw Whadford. I believe anything is possible. Since our Whadford surname spelling is unique and through all my years of research, I have never been able to find a listing of another person living or deceased with that exact same spelling that was not known to me. I’ve researched variations of Wadford, Watford, Wafford, Wofford, Wolford, Walford, Woodford, Whitford, etc. without success. I hope the mysterious statue and country store was/is in Hamilton County and I can at last concentrate my research with possible concrete clues that will lead me down a definite road to answers. Here is what we know:

Great-grandfather William Henry Whadford was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. At some point, he was sent to live with a supposed “uncleö in Florida, but ran away with supposed “cousinsö when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas with another supposed “uncle.ö The family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Havens on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. They had a son, William Henry Whadford Jr. born Oct. 15, 1886 in Sulpher Springs, Hopkins County, Texas and Mary soon died afterwards. My g-grandfather then married Sminthie Ellen Matlock (b. Sept. 4, 1874 Marlin, Falls County, Texas) on Jan. 14, 1889 at Cureo, Dewitt County, Texas. They had six children:

Leona Josephine (f) b. Mar. 20, 1890 at Cuero, Dewitt County, Texas

Bonnie Monroe (m) b. Jan. 15, 1892 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas

Jessie Winnie (f) b. Sept. 26, 1893 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas

Maude Belle (f) b. Jun. 26, 1895 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas

Lillie Mae (f) b. Mar. 5, 1898 at Edna, Jackson County, Texas

Charles Henry Claude (m) b. Jan. 9, 1902 at Paonia, Delta County, Colorado (my grandfather)

The found censuses of William Henry are:

The 1900 census of Montgomery County, Texas lists: William Henry Whadford, w, m, born-Sept, year-1865 age last birthday is 30 or 39 and he is a logger (possibly in the San Jacinto Range) and his unknown parents were born in Alabama. The census date is June 4th, 1900.

The 1910 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 47 (birthyear? 1863?) and as a survivor (dependent?) of the Civil War and that his father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in Florida. The census date is April 18th, 1910.

The 1920 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 56 (birthyear? 1864) and both his parents were born in North Carolina. The census date is Jan. 24th, 1920.

The 1930 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Wadford, m, w, age 66 (birthyear? 1864) and his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Alabama. The census date is April 10th, 1930.

William Henry died September 23, 1939 and is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Delta County, Colorado.

Recently, I finally found an Alabama census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather may/would have been. I included this information as the Hubbard last name may be some type of clue or tie you may recognize to the WHADFORD name/statue/country store and Hamilton County. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name.

The listing is:

Hubbard, James D. age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama.
Mollie, age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama.
Walter R. or B., age 1 , M, W, At Home, b. Alabama.
Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama.
Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama.

My thoughts are perhaps Ms. Wadford may have been a sister (some type of relative) to James D. or Mollie Hubbard, but she could have been only a boarder. I cannot locate any information on the Hubbards as well.

It’s my hope someone may remember or recognize the statue/country store. If you would be so kind as to present my letter to the historical society members, point me in a direction, offer any ideas or put me in contact with someone who may be able to offer me search suggestions, I’d be very grateful! Please contact me at my numbers listed below; any assistance will be most assuredly appreciated!

Thank you very much! I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Very truly yours,
Nancy L. Compton

My ancestors, Charles and his son, Samuel McClellan, were early Florida pioneers and spent several years in Hamilton County before returning to Jefferson County. Charles apparently was a Methodist deacon, performing marriage ceremonies and spreading the word. I'd love to know evn more about my Florida ancestors!

My family came to Florida from Meigs/Rhea Co's.Tenn. They were part of a wagon train fleeing south ahead of Union troops. They settled in Jasper. My great-grandfather settled there and my grandfather was born there. The family then moved to Pasco Co. where my Father and I were born. My great-grandfather was James Knox Polk Ward. His wife was Ascha(called Axey) Tyre Ward. My grandfather was William David Ward. My Dad was a Jr. We are trying to find information about my grandmother Julia Nora Rouse. We know she was born in Cumberland Co. NC. Her Father was Marshal Rouse and her mother was Sarah E. Rouse. Supposedly he was a steamboat captian on the Suwanee River. Cant find any info to substanciate this. Supposedly my grandfather Willie worked as a deckhand and was "messing around" with Julia and her father fired Willie and kicked him off the boat. He left but took Julia with him and her family disowned her and maybe moved to Mississippi. We can find no information to show where they lived in Fl or Ga. Any help would be appreciated.

Arcadia Publishing is currently seeking qualified writers and historians to join with us in an exciting publishing venture to document America's epic story. You may already be familiar with Images of America, our pictorial history series, but Making of America is a new narrative-based series, focusing on the history of towns and cities, and their dynamic uniqueness, across the nation. The idea behind Making of America is to map, town by town, city by city, the entire country, creating a quilt of stories to unite the nation.

We currently have two published Making of America books out of Florida and we'd like to see that list grow. Books in this series contain a comprehensive, chronological history of a community's development over the centuries, highlighting major events that had an impact on its citizens and landscape. I would be happy to send you some information by mail, a packet that would include a sample Making of America chapter, our basic guidelines for authors, a brochure, a New Book Proposal form, and contact information for Arcadia Publishing.

If you are interested in this new publishing opportunity from Arcadia Publishing or know someone who might be, please contact me at swilliams@arcadiapublishing.com to request a basic information packet. I look forward to hearing from you.

Trying to determine who N.V. or V.V. Dees was. She married John D. Johnson in 1874, but these initials are all I have to go on. Great sight, keep up the good work.

When did they come to Hamilton County? mid 1800s
Comments:
My Grandfather was John Edward High who in the early 1900s owned two hotels in Jasper (the Osceola and the High hotel).
He also owned Bakers Mill at one time. My mother Sara High was born in Bakers Mill and was raised in Jasper, Moving to Orlando in the early 1940s.

I am trying to track down info on my Great Grandfather Daniel? or William? High (More likely Daniel). He purchased land from the federal government in 1860. He fought with Company C 10th Florida Infantry and was wounded in the mouth at the batle of Olustee and later starved to death as he could not eat.

Can anyone give me any details on him.

What are your Hamilton County Surnames? Bell, Brickell, Tuten, Johnson (Allen G.)
When did they come to Hamilton County? Before it was called Hamilton County
Comments:
I descend from Daniel Bell and wife Evaline Brickell, through their son Thomas Nathaniel Bell and wife Ellen Arrhetta Tuten (daughter of Redden J. Tuten and his wife Martha M. ?), whose son David Oceola Bell and wife Anna Dasher Hinton (daughter of William Henry Hinton and Matilda Virginia Johnson)are the parents of my paternal grandmother Stella Virginia Bell (born, raised, and still living in Gainesville FL at age 93). I understand that a utility crew recently found some very old timbers when placing a new line across Bell's (or Tiger's) Creek south of Jasper. This would likely be the location of what was Daniel Bell's water mill, which is shown in the painting donated to the Jasper Public Library by Virginia Bell. I have mapped the land holdings of Daniel Bell as researched in deed copies from the Jasper Public Library and find that he held the equivalent of two square miles of land in and around Jasper. Since I live in the Seattle area, it's not often that I'm able to travel to Jasper, however I am determined to visit the sites where my G-G-G-Grandfather lived and farmed so long ago. Please let me know how I can help with the research for this project. I'm happy so many are able to work together to make this website work.
