My Troys are related to your Garveys. I was on www.ysearch.org. I found that my Troy cousin has 35 out of 37 matching markers to your Garvey--G15 from Co. Kerry. We are related. I just don't know the connection. According to family history, my Troys came from Co. Linerick. My paper trail has them coming from the Co. Meath-Co.Dublin area. There is also a record of a Troy in Co. Kilkenny. I haven't established a connection with him. I'd love to solve this mystery. Genetics don't lie.

I am a Garvey from the Chicago area. My father's name was Maurice James Garvey and he married Marie A. St. Cyr. My father was a very successful attorney and mom was a housewife. They both grew up in Chicago. My father had a younger sister named Mary Jane. She married Donald Gancer. They had 5 children. My dad's father was Maurice Aloysius Garvey. He had several brothers and sisters. The only one I can recall at this time is his sister Helen. Her married name was Perterson. Murice Aloysius was a lawyer for the railroad. He was married to Mary Jordon. She too had several brothers and sisters. Some of their names were Tom, Daniel and Helen. If I am not mistaken my great grandfather's name was also Maurice Garvey. I believe he was from County Cork Ireland.

I have always had an interest in learning about the Garvey's. I don't know much about my family past my grandfather. So if anyone is interested in helping learn more about us I greatly appreciate it. I am also interested in giving a sample of my DNA but I am concerned about the cost.

There is a new Irish (American/Canadian etc.# CD out, specifically about the potato famine/An Gorta Mor and it is called "Songs for our ancestors." The Garveys are well-represented in it #since I put it out). Songs are beautiful; 18 songs by different musicians of Irish descent. Email me at maryogarvey@yahoo for more information. Cost is $10 US plus $2 shipping US, $3 shipping CN and more elsewhere. It is really a great collection of songs. mg

I thought I would add 2 bits of information to the Thomas Garvey's family of 1790 in Kinderhook, NY. Thomas Garvey, Sr and his wife Mary had their two children baptized in New Corcord, NY: Thomas, 14 Jul 1771 and Susanna 1 Aug 1773. Thomas' bapt date comes from St James Church of Great Barrington (on the web) and the date of his sister Susanna is on page 294 of FHL 234568 of the records of Rev Gideon Bostwick. Bostwick's area included both the Berkshires of MA and the NY area west of there.

Looks like he came over with Julia Garvey and a Maurgerito Garvey and perhaps a Mary Knight. All were going to be with a cousin on Baltimore. Name on ship list says cousin was A M White.

Hi I am researching my family line but have got stuck with my 5th grt grandfather Anthony Garvey, born in 1791 in Newry. He came to England at some point and shows in the 1971 census living in Bridlington East Yorkshire and married Mary(unknown surname) from wakefield born 1805?, they had 3 children that i can find Daniel 1827, Anthony 1829 and Lucy 1843. I have scoured the internet for clues as to when he came to England and when he married but have found no clues, any help would be fantastic...

I am a descendant of Edward Garvey & Margaret(h) Lennon. They were from Ireland, but I don't know from where.
They immigrated to Canada perhaps in the late 1830s and had children in Toronto: Edward, Jane I (Quirk), Mary (Hale), Catherine (sp?) and perhaps other children unknown to me.
Edward married Mary H(erschog?) around 1860, had children Sarah, John, Mary, Rose & Jerome Edward in Avon, NY.
Mary died in the 1870s and he gave away the children.
Edward remarried Mary Jane Baird and had my great grandfather, Fred A Garvey.
If anyone knows anything about Edward & Margaret or their children, please contact me.

Have just returned to New Zealand after a working holiday in the UK.I have found my Irish relations in Roscommon. Luckily for me my New Zealand aunts had the information I needed to find them in Ireland. I was overwhelmed with their generosity and welcome to their country. I was shown the old stone house my g.grandfather built (in the early 1800s )and raised 12 of his 14 children in, really an emotional time for me, I feel so privilaged to have met my Irish family, decendents of John Garvey and his wife Mary Anne Barrett..my great grand parents.
good luck to everyone out there looking for their long lost Irish families....Anne, New Zealand.

I know little of my father as he died when I was just 5, and am now 61. I have attestation papers from the Canadian military and that he was a musician in the 48th Highlanders Pipe/Drum at 1939 Worlds Fair, that he was married and divorced and had two daughters in the Toronto area who would be quite aged if still alive. He was born in England in either Highbarnett or Barnstable. Entered Canada at Detroit and worked for the Davis and Henderson Co in Toronto. I have been told that my grandfather played with the Desousa Band what his first name was I do not know. My Fathers name was Alfred Edwin Garvey and was born 1889

My Garvey was married to Margaret Isabelle Garvey. Michael was born in 1834 and died June 20, 1910. He is buried in St. Aloysius cemetery in East Liverpool Ohio. I can't find who his parents were though or when he came over. Any info would help

Searching for Garvey's who emigrated from Ireland and settled in Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada (probably in the mid-1800's). My gr-gr-grandfather was Michael Garvey, b. 1805 in Ireland and died abt 1874 in Hamilton, Ontario. He was a farmer and a laborer. His wife was Mary Daly, b. abt 1832 in Ireland. There was about a 30 year age gap between Michael Garvey and his wife, Mary Daly. They had 4 children born in the early 1850's to mid 1860's. Their children's names were: Bridget (their only child born in Ireland), Katherine (or "Kate"), Margaret ("Maggie"), and Michael Jr. Margaret "Maggie" Garvey married John Stephen McDonough of Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario (and she was my gr-grandmother).If you have any information about these Garvey's, or you are possibly related to them (and me) please contact me at: hoppyandangie@comcast.net Would love to hear from you!

Any information any one can give me would be greatly appreciated. I have wanted to know so much for so long but never knew, oh also, my father was in WWII and worked for Ringling Brothers and Barnum, and Bailey Circus.

My great grandfather was Matthew Garvey (occupation-farmer) and he married Catherine Cassidy in 1882 in S. Mayo, Ireland. Their son, my grandfather, Anthony Garvey(6-24-1888-1925?) was born in Ireland and the family emigrated to Philadelphia. My grandfather Anthony Garvey married Catherine Hopkins (1-22-1888-1946?), also born in S, Mayo. They married in Philadelphia in 1914. They had 4 children, one of them was my father, Michael Francis Garvey(1917-1989). Anthony died in a house fire in or around 1925 in Philadelphia. Does anyone know of any more children born to Matthew and Catherine Garvey from S. Mayo, Ireland who settled in Philadelphia, PA?

My husband's grgrandmother was Bridget Delia Garvey, b 1858. She came from Ireland, but we are unsure exactly where or when. Censuses have been of little use. She had a brother named William who married Nellie Hayes, & lived in Marshall, MO. Delia married William Avery in KC, MO in 1881, and they lived in Kansas. Anyone who can help us shed light on her background would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hello to all the Garveys out there!! I was wondering if anyone out there can help me find more information about my family. My grandfather was Patrick Garvey & my grandmother was Lucy (Harrison) Garvey of Mayo County in Ireland. They were an arranged marraige & settled in New York when they were young. If anyone has heard of Garvey's Bar in Galway, I'm told my cousin Cahill runs it now, that might help. Thanks everyone!!

I am interested in the Patrick Garvey family. He was born in Ireland in 1832, and in 1910 resided in California as a widower. My husband descends from his son James. We suspect that it was via James' mother or father that the disease Huntington's Chorea still afflicts the descendants. Does anyone else have Huntington's in their family? Patsy

I am married to John (Jack)McDonald, a descendant of Anthony, James and John McDonald and another John McDonald, and have done considerable work and still doing so on his line of McDonalds. I met Ed Garvey in Wash., D.C. about 43 years ago, and I also met Estelle Garvey Archdeacon about 20 years ago , and I know our families have a connection. My husband's gf John McDonald lived with the Garveys in Grafton after his mother Sarah Cryan died.

I have my Anthony McDonald married to Bridget Nyland and living in Troy, NY, in the 1850 census. Their oldest child Catherine was either born in Ireland or on the ship over here. The next child, a boy James was born in Troy NY as were the next three who were boys. The rest of the children were born in Minnesota. I was told that Anthony's mother was Bridget Bryan.

I and another descendant have been trying to find records in Ireland that would show where Anthony and Bridget were married. So far we haven't found anything in County Mayo.

Would you know anyone still living that descended from either of the McDonald girls who married the Garvey boys? Do you have any other info regarding the McDonalds?

I enjoyed reading your Garvey history.

Connie McDonald

His son, Sir Christopher settled in co Mayo, and descendants moved to Longford (1700's#, then to Lincolnshire, English branch #1800's), and then to Queensland Australia in the 1860's when brothers Richard Edward Garvey and William Charles Garvey migrated. I'd be most interested to have contact with any relatives. Thanks, Susan

In the 1901 census in England he had obviously come to England and he was described as a widower.

albert was one of 6 brothers and 5 sisters

i would love to hear from any of my aunts, uncles, cousins etc as we lost touch with the family over time while i was a youngster.

He died in the early 1920's in a fire. From what I am told by my father, Michael Francis, my grandfather had alot of brothers who came to the U.S. with him, but dispersed throughout U.S. Anyone know of any connection please respond by e-mail.

I'm researching my Garvey ancestry... my great grandfather was John Garvey born c1866, emigrated to England (St Helens) in 1890, died 1907. That much I know about him!
He married Esther Grogan in Tullamore (Offaly) in 1884 - and whilst I've been able to trace my Grogan ancestry back through the Parish Registers, the first mention of any Garvey (that I can find) in the Tullamore registers is John Garvey's marriage. I've seen the parish register, so I know the marriage took place but the marriage doesn't appear in the Civil Registration Index and neither the local Registration Office or the GRO in Dublin can find a civil registration (which would have provided details of John's father, etc). I've searched the available "surrounding" Parish Registers and have found a possible matching baptismal entry at Birr (in 1865) - this John's father was Patrick.
I know that this is a real long shot, but can anyone help me? Does anyone have information on Garvey's in Offaly in the 19thC? Would Tullamore in the 1880's have been a centre for employment that attracted people from beyond the immediate locality? Are there other local records I could look at?
Looking forward to lots of help.....
Thanks for reading
Tom Parker

Found on a tombstone in Bath abbey Garvey Crest on top
"To the memory of Anthony Garvey Esq born at Aughnagun in the County of Down late an eminent merchant of the City of Rouen in Normandy he lived a model of religious and social virtues which in 1793 (Ithink) drew upon him the sovereign aversion if the French Insurgents from whose persecutions he was obliged to seek shelter under the British Government. After the death of his brother Robert Garvey Esq he proved to his afflicted widow and beloved sons James and Robert Garvey a constant support and faithful protector during the space of nearly thirty years in memory of whose kind benefactions this Monument is erected by his surviving friends. He departed this life on 26th of April 1804 aged 65 and lies interred in this Abbey. Requisant in Pace"

It's a 3rd generation photocopy of a photograph and I don't know anyone going to Bath to get a proper photo.

Am seeking info about my husband's grgrandmother, Bridget Delia Garvey b in Ireland in September 1858. She married William Henry Avery in Kansas City, MO in 1881, and had 8 children. Her brother William Avery married Nellie Hayes; I have records for at least two of his children's baptisms. Both couples lived for a time in the 1880s in Marshall, Saline co, MO and sponsored each other's children at baptism in Roman Catholic church there. Not sure where in Ire. Delia & William came from, but think somewhere in County Clare. Would like to know what happened to William & Nellie's descendants, and to correspond. There may be other siblings who came to the U.S. in late 1800s - if so, I'd welcome contact!

Oh, I forgot, around 1915, or so, there was a "Fr. Bernard Garvey" who emigrated to the U.S. and 'was called home to look after my mom's family who was orphaned by that time. They so much looked forward to his arrival back in "Tully" in Co. Armagh, so they would be able to stay together and have someone to watch over them but, the worst possible thing happened. Although a very young man, when he arrived in Ireland he almost immediately caught pneumonia and died. They were crestfallen and the family had to split up , each going their own way in the world.

Hi, My mom was related to the Armagh Garvey's. I got this information from the great new book "Kick Any Stone: Townlands, People and Stories from Forkhill Parish"assembled by the Mullaghbawn Community Association, compiled and edited by Una Walsh and Kevin Murphy.
The book states that, per the 1911 Census of "Tullymacreeve", there lived "Bridget Garvey, 73, widow. In the household Mary, 52, Annie, 29, Patrick, 43, Thomas, 41, and nieces Maggie McCreesh, 6, and Bridget McCreesh, 4. Maggie McCreesh was my mother. There are other Garvey's listed - would you like me to send you the information about them?
When my mom came to Chicago she lived with a "James Garvey" and his wife and daughter, Rose in the 1920's
You have a fantastic website. I wish I could do the same for the "McCreesh's" - they are HARD to find! Rosemary Lesh

I am just starting to try to trace my family tree. My grandfather Peter John McGarvey was born in Laurel Ontario. His father was Patrick McGarvey, and he was married to Mary Jane McGarvey. I think he was from County Armaugh in Ireland.

There was a tale in our family that property was left to my grandfather in Ireland, but he could not go to claim it as the war (WW1 ? )was on. The crown supposedly took it over to pay for the war. Is there anyone out there who could help me track down my leg of the McGarvey family, or give me some direction? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Elizabeth Rich (Ritch)b.c. 1759 SC; married John SHOAKES (Shokes)b.c. 1755 SC; in St James Santee Parish, Charleston Dist., SC in 1787. I have found one record listing a John Shoak in Scotland who married Janet Meason 1753, Dundee, Angus, SCT.

Wondering if there was a Scottish connection for GARVEY and SHOAKes.

Does anyone have an idea who John GARVEY's parents were? An educated guess?

Always Searching,

This is going to sound weird. There is a strange characteristic in my Garvey family. It's known as "the Garvey chin" and it's been passed down for about five generations in the U.S. and County Mayo. What it is really is an immature nerve in the chin which twitches whenever the person is nervous or upset. Is there anyone reading this who has this characteristic in their Garvey family? It's shown up in the U.S. and also in the Irish branch. Curious.

There were 2 Garveys listed in North Carolina in the 1790 Census, Thomas in Carteret Co. and Patrick in Hertford Co.

I'm betting on Thomas, but would appreciate any information on Thomas, Patrick, or John in North Carolina prior to 1790.

I have been searching for many years for my great grandfather, Charles E. Garvey. His family was from Vermont in 1800 and then settled in St. Lawrence County, New York in the mid and late 1800s. They finally came to NE Ohio in 1900. Charles was born in 1836 and in 1877 he had a son with Tillie Bush named Albert Garvey in Potsdam or Pierrepont, NY. Albert was my grandfather and he spoke about Potsdam all the time but he never mentioned his parents. When they all came to Ohio, Albert came with cousins, aunts and uncles. Back in Vermont in 1800, there is a John Garvey that is related and his wife's name is Sarah Snow Garvey. When they moved to St. Lawrence County, NY they had at least one child, Willard (William) Garvey. I have spoken to every township clerk, every geneologist, etc. If anyone has any information on Charles E. Garvey, I would be eternally grateful. Thank you.

And to all of you Garvey girls, I tell my nieces that one must be VERY special to be a Garvey girl! Believe it!

One of the sons was called Martin Anthony Garvey and was my dad. He was born in 1942 and died in 1995. My name is Cheryl Walton, nee Garvey (obviously). What a treasure trove of the family's history !!!!. My mother was Mary Agnes Garvey, from Arklow in Co. Wicklow, Eire. She was descended from the William Garvey branch of the family - he went to Spain in 1756. Two of mum's ancestors were married and buried at Avoca, Co Wicklow (known as Ballykissangel in the TV series.)

The family home was named "Knockenrahen". Mary married Frank Lissaman, lived at Hellaby, Yorkshire, U.K., and emigrated to Australia in 1950 on S.S."Asturias", with 2 sons, Frank Garvey, & James Edward.

We lived at Engadine - my sister Teresa Kathleen was born in 1951. My daughter Michelle lives in Cookham,Berks, U.K. Our first grandson was born 20/12/01 - Angus Garvey Lissaman Campbell

Would love to hear from any of the Garvey clan, especially those in Oz. My Irish cousin, Teri Garvey, has an extensive history of our branch of the Garveys. Her contribution appeared in the guestbook about a month ago.

Just came across your site which i found interesting.I have been tracing my Garvey family .They are descende from Patrick garvey , brother of Archbishop John garvey ( c.1593)Patrick was born in Kilkenny , son of john of Murrisk in mayo ,ancestral area of the Mayo garveys , .Patrick was secretary to Marshall bagenal of Elizabetrh the First's army and was responsible for the building of Newry town . There are still garveys in the area of Newry Co Down and it is generally accepted that they are quite a different family to the Armagh Garveys . One of patrick's descendants returned to Kilkenny and it was a descendent of this John garvey , one Willian garvey who went to spain in 1756 . I am descended from this branch and have visited jerez and looked at the archive material in the bodega san patricio . I would be interested in contacting any Spanish Garvey descendents to exchange information .

I understand that the name Jarvie (or whatever) comes from the French name Gervais. An uncle of mine once investigated the name and discovered (he said) that the Gervais were French Huguenot's persecuted for their Protestant beliefs and fled to Scotland in the 16th century, around the time of the St Bartholemews Day massacres. Do you have any other info?

He moved to Sheffield, England in 1956 when he was 11 years old. He married Anne who was born in Barnsley, England.

My Grandma Rose Garvey is now 78 and lives in Wath near Rotherham England and was married to Joe Garvey.

I am 29 and have 4 brothers and a sister.

We have just come across this site and think it is brilliant.

We go on holiday to Spain alot and always bring back a bottle of Garvey Brandy. I didn't realise that we could actually be a relative to the Garvey's in Spain.

Antonio,

The little bit I know about the Spanish branch of Garveys comes out of Rosemary Garvey's book "Kilkenny to Murrisk". All she knew was that the Spanish Garveys are descendants of a Patrick Garvey who lived in the 1500's and who was probably the youngest brother of Archbishop John Garvey (1527-1594). Other siblings of the Archbishop gained land in Co Mayo in the late 1500's and early 1600's - which is in partial agreement with what you heard about the Spanish Garveys being from Co Mayo. Patrick married Sarah (daughter of John Babe of Dervor) and acquired land in Aughnagon, Co Down. Rosemary writes that Patrick's descendants "lived there, also in Co Kilkenny, and in Normandy, and in Xerez de la Frontera, where they survive to the 20th century - Bodega de "San Patricio Garvey S.A.". The Garvey Coat of Arms on this webpage (the same one appearing on the bottles of Spanish Sherry) were granted on June 17, 1760 to one of the descendants of the above named Patrick Garvey of Aughnagon, Co Down. She gives no details about which Garvey moved to Spain nor exactly when they moved. Neither does she name the Garvey to whom the Arms were granted in 1760 - other than to say he was a descendant of Patrick.

Let me put it this way: Antonio, you may be the world's expert on the Garveys of Spain - and I'd like to hear anything else you know on the subject!

Dennis

Hi, this is Antonio from Madrid, Spain. My fourth surname is Garvey, my grandmother's father was Patricio Garvey (Conde de Garvey, Conde means Earl)and he was descendant of William Garvey who arrived to Spain in the 18th century and married a girl from Cadiz.
He founded the Sherry Bodegas Garvey. I have heard he came from Mayo County. Have you information about this branch?

Thanks in advance, regards.

Greetings - great site.

As a Garvey - I'm just getting into the study of my 'roots', and this site is a cool place to start.

I'm in New Jersey now - my family is from Philadelphia - my brother (Matthew) and I are the last males in our family line.

As anyone heard of any superstition regarding "Francis/Frank" Garvey's?

My great uncle Frank Garvey was killed durng the invasion of Rome (WWII), my uncle Frank Garvey died at a young age due to a burst appendix. I don't have details, but supposedly this unfortunate coincidence goes back further than my great uncle.

My father wanted to name me Frank, until my grandmother talked him out of it (the obvious connection is that the generations continued to want to name their offspring in honor of their lost brothers named Frank).

The logical part of my brain knows it's unlikely there is any 'curse' - but I'm curious nonetheless. Anyone have any similar stories?

Regards -- Don

This is an extremely well done webpage -both as to content and layout! I am a McCANN descendant and have been intensively researching McCANN in an area of Errigle Keerogue Civil Parish and find them very intertwined with McGArvey. I note that you stated that the Garveys homeland was Armagh and that they had been affiliated with O'Hanlon, who in turn had been displaced by MacCann. I am wondering which years you
are talking about. I would love to hear more about this, as my McCANNs were evicted from Armagh during the plantation and "were dropped on the heather bog " in Tyrone. I am wondering if they were evicted at the same time.
Look forward to your reply.

My Great Grandfather was Cyril Stanley Garvey, son of John Francis Garvey (1846-1926).John Francis came to NZ in 1866 from England. His Father was Rev. John Garvey (1814-1855), who was a Canon of Lincoln Cathedral.I have ancestral information which lists the Garveys of my family back to John Garvey (1527-1595), Archbishop of Murrisk Abbey, Armagh, Ireland. (son of John O'Garvey). The list goes back 4 more generations, as well as including the names all the way down to me. I am interested in the very early family history, and I have been looking to learn more about the people in between. There is a Garvey family reunion in the South Island of New Zealand at Easter this year (2002). I would love to hear from anyone about any of this.

My g.g.grandmother was Ann (or Annie) Garvey, born in Co.Louth (don't know where) around 1838. She married James Clare, also from Louth, & they moved to Haydock, Lancs around 1880.

If anyone else has a Louth Garvey in their family, please let me know, as I've now drawn a blank!

In my family we have an unusual genetic Garvey characteristic which is called "the Garvey chin" and identifies a descendant...however not all Garvey descendants have this characteristic. It generally does not skip a generation, but I never thought of it as peculiar until I began doing genealogy. Possibly other Garvey families might share this trait.

Medically speaking it is known as an immature nerve. It is located in the chin and whenever the person is nervous or upset, the nerve is triggered resulting in what we children called "the quivering chin." Sounds ridiculous I know but it has been recorded in the family for more than 100 years and thruout 6 generations. Has anyone else heard of it in their Garvey family?

My grandfather was John Garvey. All I know is that he was in the Manchester area of England in 1908, when my father Bernard was born. He was then 46.

I know nothing of any of his family and my father was an only child. Maybe John Garvey had relations still in Ireland. I don't know why he came to England or how he met my grandmother, who was from man chester. her name was Annie Dimelow. Any help on a John Garvey born in 1862 in Ireland - there were probably many - would be gratefully received - there are now many Garvey great-grandsons to carry on the name who would love to know where their roots lie.

Many thanks.

Just starting what I think is a almost hopeless search. My fathers name was Alfred Edwin Garvey born in Highbarnet or Barnstable EnGland June 5 1879. It is believed that the family immigrtated to US possibly the Carolinas when, not sure. My father was a musician with the 48th Highlanders Pipe band his father apparently was a musician with/in the big bands era. He worked for the Ford Motor Co in either Detroit or Windsor and then for the Davis and Hebderson stationary Co in Toronto. I am now 50 and only learned last year that he had been married prior to marrying my mother and had at least to daughters and they lived in the city of Toronto but would be at leastin their mid sixties or early 70's since my older brother is 63.As far as we know he had one sister.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They were in the 1850 census at Hamiloton County, Ohio. After that they lived in Mount Pleasant, Belmont County, Ohio. They finally settled in Chatsworth, Livingston County, Illinois. If anyone has a connection to them please contact me.

Thanks Bill

the story I have heard, was that at the time of the Armada, a good swimmer who reached the shore of Mayo was Garvey, a Spaniard of the brandy family in Spain. he stayed until the famine killed of so many of the people, then one little Garvey orphan was being transported to Dublin on a cart. He fell off near Carrickmacross in Monaghan,by a farm owned by a childless couple. they took in little Francis Bernard Garvey, and he and his family inherited the farm. I went to the farm, which was sold 2 years ago..to meet Francis Bernard Garvey and his sister, May. His father and grandfather had the same name. So did my father and grandfather. They looked identical.

I have prepared a brief 100 page family history (with family trees) of my own Garvey branch which can be obtained from me: Andrew Garvey Via Carlo Tenivelli, 11. TORINO 10144. Italy.
I am the son of John Garvey (Portsmouth, 1933-1978), son of Henry Thomas (Portsmouth, 1895-1948), son of John Thomas (Portsmouth, 1855-1931), son of John Joseph (Sheerness 1824-Portsmouth 1890), son of Timothy (Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland 1782-London 1865). Timothy, a sailor, had another son, Michael, also in the Navy 1840c of whom I know very little. John Joseph, a warrant officer, RN had one son and a daughter. John Thomas had four sons: John Joseph, William Arthur, Henry Thomas and Ernest. Henry THomas had three sons: Edward (Bill), John, who served in HMY Britannia, and David. Nearly all male Garveys served in the Royal Navy.

Hello. I'm doing research on my Great Uncle, Richard Stephen Garvey of London E1, who died in 1917 at the Battle of Arras. His father, James, was living in the City of London in the late 19th Century. Do you have any information on London Irish with the Garvey surname?

Cheers, Nicholas Hall

An excellent description of where the Garveys are from. My grandfather from County Armagh (probably around Creggan)was sponsored by a P. M. Garvey in the 1870's in Allegheny County PA. Any connection? I am trying to find any connections to my Grandfather, James B. Moley, that I can.

Just wanted to say hi, I am a Garvey who was born in Yorkshire, England. I am from a branch of Garveys who reportedly came from Galway.

Interestingly enough I lived in Canada for 20 years and have two children whos father is Jamaican (I'm sure you are aware of the famous Jamaican Garvey!)Although my children were registered as Brown on their birth certificates we are all now using my maiden name.

We have been living in England for the last 4 years but are moving back to Ontario in December.

I find your site to be very interesting!

Just thought I'd drop you a line

My Garveys are from Mullaghbrack parish, County Armagh; have recently found that they might be connected to the Tullyvallen Garveys. James Garvey b.ca 1790 resided Tannaghmore, Armagh. His headstone includes "his brother Felix." The only Felix Garvey found in the Irish indices that could possibly be James' brother was in Tullyvallen, Armagh. Would be interested in hearing from Tullyvallen Garvey descendents.

Are you planning to add other US census years? My McGarveys, unfortunately, came to the US (Phila.) in the 1880s, as far as I've been able to determine. I was very interested to see the GV distribution. It looks like yet another of my lines will be from Ulster! Nice site. I'll be back when I know more about my McGarveys!

I have a picture of a lovely little girl - Charlotte GARVEY - that I bought from a local antique shop in Jefferson, Texas. The picture was taken by a photographer in Marshall, Texas, I would guess in the early 20th century. I have desparately tried to find a home for this treasure. I can e-mail a copy to anyone who thinks they might know her.
