Need help, looking for the family of my grandfather Thomas David HARP-born April 25, 1861-we believe, in California-possibly Salinas or nearby. I have not found him as a birth or a youth though we have many deceased Harps in that valley. Parents unknown.
Marriage license 1896 Nixa, Christian County Missouri to Frances Melinda Carsten..they both gave their residence as Riverdale, Christian County,MO.
1900 Census Greene County, Missouri a farmer-wife-2 sons.
1903.. Arrived San Jose, California with wife Frances (Fannie) & 2 sons.
Spent the rest of his life in San Jose working as a merchant of second hand goods. Died San Jose 1948.
I knew my grandfather, he was a lovely soft-spoken man, a man of few words. He loved his only daughter, my mother, and was very kind to her. He and grandma had 4 sons also. A large family of descendants now exists in
California and we all are faced with the same questions. What is our ancestral history.
This is all I know:Thomas David Harp did not speak of his history to any of his children. The bits & pieces we have heard from him: He claimed to be related to Jesse James ( but, who isn't ) I've not found anything concrete unless distantly related through a Bolin of Christian County. he claimed to have worked at a stagestop where J J's left his horse on occasion. T D Harp also claimed to have worked at a sugar refinery as a youth in CAlif. ( there was one in Salinas area), his parents were both born in Arkansas.
He may have had a brother George and a brother Louis/Lewis.
Both he and his wife were small of stature as were their children.
Unusual family traits: His thumb tips were round and stubby. That trait has shown up occasionally in every generation.
Either his mother or grandmother may have been American Indian.
His wife Frances also claimed American Indian heritage, which we believe to be Cherokee.
Excitedly hoping to make a contact,
Thank you,
Geri Madden

Bill and Bertha Israel and family came to California from Missouri in about 1943 and I know that they have many family members still living back there. I have heard them mention Springfield, Bois D'Arc, Poplar bluff, and many other places in Missouri. If you have any knowledge of these families, I would very much appreciate you contacting me at: margeisrael@aol.com

follow here in my home in Odessa, Texas. I visited the courthouse at Ozark and the library in 2001. Now 4 years later I have begun my search for more information again.
Thanks!

Comments:
I'm glad I was able to find this site, as I've been researching my paternal ancestors, Lukens, which is my given name. I adopted the Sanders surname after my mother remarried, of my own decision when I was 13.

My grandfather, Kenneth Boone Lukens was born in Nixa, MO, to Vernon P. Lukens and Myrtle B. McGowan Lukens, in 1903.

I see that the marriage of my great-grandfather to his beloved is listed as "Lukens U.P. Myrtle McGown 7 May 1902 Book 07/Page 046 Barnett W P mg", but the correct spelling of their names is as I have mentioned previously.

I inherited the engagement ring Vernon P. gave to Myrtle a few years ago, and still have it today.

Sincerely,
Kenneth R. Lukens AKA Kenneth R. Sanders

My father was Austin C. Abbott, born in Christian County (Sparta?) in 1874. He was 60 when I was born. His father was LaFayette Abbott, who was the son of William Abbott. I am still trying to trace my linage back to a Patley(sp?)Abbott, who I thought came to Christian County and was the father of William. At any rate, I will be in the area next month - I live in AZ - and will probably stop in to do some research. You have a fantastic site!!

I never visited Missouri and even if I can't get an apartment or a house over there I hope I can live in neighboring towns; that way I can still pass by it and really get an upclose look at life in Sparta.

Maybe they left. The Fain and Hodge families have a long history in Missouri. Most of it it Barry Co. George Fain died in Washburn Co. ANd I am told by his Grandaughter, my grandmother, that he was a rider for the Pony Express. Do you have any birth records that may include George Lewis Fain? Or, could you, or someone, direct me to another source? Sincerely and appreciatively, Monica Tweet

Dear Hosts,
I recently had a great find. For years My grandfather(now dec'd.)Lee E. G. Wilson, and family members told me that the
Maples Family came from a place called Granny's Knob, TN. However, no one knew where this was. I tried looking for it
through various means with no luck, so I gave up. this past year of 2002 coming back from my husbands family reuion in Kentucky, We took a scenic route through the Clinch Mt. area
and ran across the ThornHill cafe "Home of the Vinagar Pie" my grandfathers favorite. Going in and sampling this pie and speaking with the owner, Mr. Gaerald McCarter, He informed me "he could tell me how to gt there, He was born there. Granny's Knob is 3 miles further South East of Sevierville, Tn. one of the most beautiful places I Have ever seen in life. I have now connected with the Maples of
Maples Branch Baptist Church and Bethel Church " and made several trips. There recently has been published a book
"The Maples Tree of Tennessee" Author Mike Maples. This
book includes the Maples branches of other states and
where they migrated to including the Missouri groups. If anyone is interested in this book, contact:

They also had a daughter Maude Risley whose married name is Moore. My Grandma Mae moved to Indianapolis, Indiana at some point in her life, but not sure what or who brought her here. Mae gave birth to my father, John Hogue in 1949. I recently lost my father to cancer and have started to search for any family members from the Risley/Osburn side I can find. i am trying to find the parents of my great grandmother sarah ellen scribner she was born april 6 1881. my uncle who is now deceased wrote an article saying that my great grandfather john hall married a local ava girl sarah ellen scribner. i guess that i am concentrating on the taney douglas maybe christsen county areas. the 1890fed census was destroyed in a fire but was told that i could possibly check into the 1885 or 1895 mo census and that would possibley tell me who were here parents. the 1900 census would not help because she had already married in 1894 so i dont think the 1895 census would help heither if you could point me in the right direction i would appreciate it i dont get to come back to mo very often i live in the dallas tx area.i was born and raised in west plains mo.

Your web site is very easy to read, I like the way you can look for your family surnames and get out and not have to view the entire census. Not knowing for sure where your family might show up, it takes so long to view all the census in a time period for an entire State.
I thank you for the long hours and expense it took to put this Web site together so people like me can come in and search for family information.
I am searching for Rhodes, Richardson and Arney, found some Rhodes on your site and printed information off to check out.

My great grandparents, William Kimbrough and Nancy Johnson moved to Missouri in 1859 from Tennessee. He served in the 8th Cavalry(Civil War) and was County Treasurer in the late 1800s. Their oldest son, James Thomas, moved to Idaho in 1918 with his wife and 11 children. We celebrate a Johnson gathering each Labor Day weekend.
Thanks so much for all your effort. It is much appreciated.

Hello: I have been searching for my Grandfather and Grandmother for over ten years.. I have only found one person that comes close to the age that he was in 1860, and that was a James Workman, age 2 in Christian County, Mo. I have no idea where they went after that... I sure would like to hear from anyone that might be able to give me a clue. We know that he married Sarah Jane Scott in Mo. in 1883 or thereabouts. Thanks and thanks for the nice information from your site... it was very thrilling to at least see this much.

Thank you so much for transcribing data from the 1870 Census. My Gr Gr Grandfather was Samuel Estes, Polk Township, ref # 906. Several things about the Census listing are curious. The first child listed "Jasa" could have been "James Wood", Melcina's child by her first marriage; except I thought he was born in 1859. "James" was my Grandfather, born 7/1858 ((that matches my info)). Our family history says "John", born 6/1861, was killed in 1863. Maybe he was not? "Margratt" was daughter of Sam & Melcina, 'Margaret E.'. Then our family history says George, 11-22-1869, was born dead. Maybe he died after the Censes was taken. ??
This puts a whole new light on my ancestors. I thank you so much for transcribing the Census data.
