Comments:	It has been awhile since I've been back to the site. Thank you for work you have put into this. My grandfather David Tipton and my dad Andrew Meadows both worked in the mines close to Wallins Creek. My dad moved us to Indiana when I was about a year old and my Grandfather followed after that. My Uncle Ray Tipton is still living in Wallins Creek and worked the mines for years. I am also looking for a brother I didn't know I had until recently. He was probably born in 1959. My dad was his father.

Comments:	My gradfather was a miner in Harlan and I am so proud of that. I am trying to locate scrip and other memorabilia from 1930's through 1960's. I've located a scrip from one of the mines he worked for and scatter tags from another to give my father for Christmas. I also want my children to know this part of our family history and how important it is. My father's name is Robert Lee Hodge and his father's name was Arthur. My mother name is Virginia Ruth Wynn. If anyone knows them, I'd love to hear from you.

Comments:	My great-grandfather, Meredith Campbell, was a cole miner in Kenvir, KY. My grandfather, Johnny Meredith Campbell, grew up there. He left when he was 17, in 1949. I have heard many stories of his childhood and the coal mines over the years. My grandfather passed away just two weeks ago, so it was so nice to find this website and see some of what he was talking about. Thanks for your hard work!

Comments:	My daddy and his daddy were coal miners in Harlan Kentucky . They worked for the BLue Diamond mines. My Great Grandpa was Doc McGuffy Wagers at the mine and my Great Grandma Indian was his nurse. My sister now 75 years old talks about "Bloody Harlan" and all the hell that went on down there. My dad and mom lived in the C Camps as they were called down ther and coal town was a widely name used as well. I am fifty two years old this year and I know from the stories she tells of great pain and sorrow that so many people had to live back then . It is such an awful shame . Our coalminers were the great part of this Country growing and some lived so very poor. The stories break my heart for these brave souls who worked so hard.

Comments:	My grandfather, Herbert Buell Farmer (married to Bertha Walbrecht)worked in the mines in Harlan County, Ky. He died in 1981 of Black Lung. I recognized a lot of the names mentioned in the guest book as my grandparents had spoken of them often. I bet a lot of us are related. I am proud to be a coal miner's granddaughter.

Comments:	My grandfather, Andrew [andy] Watkins [1892-1924] was a coal miner in a Lower Creek mine located in Beattyville, Lee Co., KY. on Feb 6, 1924. As he was exiting the mine with his cousin, a piece of slate fell on him and decapitated him. His last words were "Lord take care of my little children". Comments:	Some of you may remember my Dad he had the nick-name of Bulldog. He is not just my dad but my best friend and my HERO. Every man who went into a coal mine to make a living for his family is a HERO of mine. My dad spent 27 years in the coal mines from Strait Creek- Kettle Island area to Shields all the way up Clover Fork to the head of the road. I went to Shields Grade School and one year at Evarts before moving to Indiana and finished School there. My dad bought a foundry in Indiana that's why we moved . I never worked in a coal mines I drove a coal truck for a couple of people even drove one for a Kentucky State Trooper for a long time. Would love to hear from old friends and school mates from Shields and Evarts so feel free to email me . The three teacher at Shields that had a impact on my life are Pauline Creech, Vivian Evans and Bill Crowley..I still have a faded picture of Ms. Creech after all these years. God bless all those teachers that make a difference in our lives and all the Coal Miners that left way before their time, they are missed.

Comments:	My Pop (Grandpa) was a coal miner in Chevrolet for 45 years or more, until the mine closed down. I was born in the old Harlan Hospital in 1947. Shortly after my birth, Mom and Dad moved to Coalfield Tennessee. While I was growing up in Tennessee I would spend my summers in Chevrolet with Granny and Pop. These summers were some of the best times of my life. Just a few years ago I took my wife and two children (adults now) to Chevrolet and Harlan. I hadn't been there since 1964. I was deeply saddened to see only a couple of houses in Chevrolet that were still standing, Granny's and Pop's house had fallen down. My memories of Chevrolet were greater than the sadness I felt while I was there visiting. We also went into Harlan. These two places hold a very big place in my heart.

He went to prison for it, but got out later. They lived in Harlan where they raised my dad, Mark Howard. My uncles Benny, Neil, Roger Dale, Johnny has passed, Gary has passed, Ernie has passed, Hulen, Ewell Howard. There are 3 girls named Daisey, Barbara, and Joan. My grandma and grandpa moved to Salem, Indiana in the 50's, and have been there ever sinse. My grandma and grandpa are deceased. There are some names I have. My grandmas sisters are Hattie Saylor. She lived in Harlan, and Fleeta Howard, whi lived in Salem. They have both passed. My grandpa had black lung. My dad took me back to Harlan when I was about 5. I remember walking along the railroad tracks, and the tunnel. And there was an old women named Estell. My grandma would always go to a cemetery on top of a hill to visit her family who died. She had a brother named Burl. My dad and my family are hopefully going to get to visit Harlan again this summer. I would like to take my dad back there one more time before he passes away, to see how things have changed and to let him see where he grew up and to show me every thing he knows about the town. I am so proud of my family history and that they came from Harlan. It is a hostorical place for us and I will never forget it. There is so much history there that is unbelievable. If anyone as info on my family, they can e-mail me and tell me or ask me questions if they have any. Thanks for your blood, sweat, and tears in the coal mines. My hearts go out to all the families of the great coalminers of Harlan Kentucky. You may be gone form this earth, but you are never forgotten. You are in our hearts always.

Comments:	Hello,I just love your suite.I am from Weeksbury,Ky and that was a coal mine camp.My dad and my husband both worked there in the mines.My dad was hurt very badly in the coal mines at Weeksbury.He also had Black Lungs when he died in 1972. We left there in 1956 because my husband couldn't fine work any more.The big coal mines shut down in Weeksbury. So we had to go were he could get a job. Think you so much for this. God bless gayle

Comments:	I was born and raised outside of Hyden, KY on Asher's Branch. My dad was Jack Asher, a coal miner for many years and my mother, Rose Washburn Asher was a homemaker. They had eleven children. We were poverty stricken and lived in a three room shack. We left the hills after dad contracted Black Lung disase. He died of cancer in 2003 in Warsaw, KY. As a young woman, I saw the economic stability of coal in the early 80's when I wrote my first song called "ACE in the HOLE". I was befriended by someone that took my songs to Nashville; That's was the I ever heard of them until I heard my song on the radio in 2003. George Strait had recorded it very soon after it found its way to Nashville. I did NOT have a Copyright so it was easy pickings for Strait. I put my trust in this person to show some integrity. All of my songs on my website have copyrights....None of which have music copyrights since I can't read, write or play music. Comments:	my grandfather, herb mcglothen, was a miner around martin, kyu,floyd co. he was badly injured in a cave in, wore casts for about eighteen months never thought to walk again.but between his stubborness and my grandmothers determination, he did walk again, my grandparents moved to st. marys, ohio and my papa retired after 25 years at goodyear. I am heartfelt in my appreciation to all miners!

Comments:	I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the old pics and I read a few of the comments and would like to say I thank God for the men and women who put their lives in danger every day o support their families my husband doesn't work in aa mines but he works at one and drives a truck and there are many days I worry and pray because of the conditions of the roads he has to haul on really enjoyed your sight stumbled upon it by accident was't raised in KY for the most part but have happily been calling Kenvir in Harlan CO. my home for almost 20 years Thank GOd for the God-fearing and loving people of Southeastern KY God Bless you all

Comments:	coal mining is a sad and dangerous occupation and it took the life of my dad in 1965. In 2007 I publishrd a book about his death, he was shot and murdered during a picket strike in leatherwood Ky., which your readers may be interested in reading. The book is "No Tears for Ernest Creech" and Berea press said it was great reading for coal mining in the sixties.

Comments:	I was born in Hazard Ky in 1957 and lived in Little Leatherwood Ky. My dad, Richard Sturgill worked for Blue Diamond Coal mines. We moved from there around 1964 to Tennesee to work in a coal mine and then back to Lynch Ky to work in the coal mine. Or family moved to Perry County Ohio so dad could work for Peabody Coal Company in New Lexington Ohio. He died in 1982. I worked in the mines there for 13 years until it closed in 1989.

Comments:	I just wanted to let my baby, Chris Hall who is a Ky. coalminer know how much I worry and pray that he comes home everynight. He has broken his arm and had some bumps and bruises along the way, rib falls and close calls but still he is a coalminer at heart. Loves his job. So to him and all the others past and present may God be with you always. I love you baby and may the darkness never fall upon you.

Comments:	My grandfather, Papaw Jones,(Boyd) and my uncle Bill Jones, were coal miners. My Papaw died in 1980 from black lung disease. I can still remember him coming home from the mines,black as coal and exhausted. But, he always had a smile on his face when he would see his grandchildren, or my mamaw, Rachel Jones. They lived in Verda. My mother's name was Ginny Jones (Virginia Stanfill). Tough times, but good memories too! I miss Kentucky alot, and the older I get, the more I miss it!

Comments:	My grandfather, Jesus V. Martinez worked in the coal mines in Wolfpit, Kentucky in Pikes County, along with his brother Manuel V. Martinez and his brothers-in-law, Jose Guerra, Luz Guerra, Anastacio Guerra, about 1920 to 1924. We have a census record from 1920 showing Lus Guerra, Anastacio Guerra, Jose Guerro and others. It is from the 1920 Census in Marrowbone, Pike county, Kentucky, Roll T625-596; Page 13B Enumeration District 113; image 288. Is there any records that could help us find them in Kentucky? My father, Jesus G. Martinez and his sister were born in Wolfpit, Kentucky in 1911 and 1923. They tell us that there was a tuberculosis epidemic during that time. My grandfather sent my grandmother and their children and her brothers' children, with his brother Manuel V. Martinez, back to Spring Branch, Texas, after Anastacio Guerra's wife, Candelaria Parra Guerra died. She was buried somewhere in Kentucky. We have a picture of my grandparents, Jesus & Benita Martinez with their five children taken in late 1923 or early 1924, as my dad was born in November of 1923 and he is very small in the picture. If you want this picture I would love to share it. Please help me find more info on my family. Thank you.

Comments:	My father {Charlie T. Campbell},was a coal miner in Hazard, Kentucky. He lost a leg in 1926 when it was caught between the wall of the mine and the motor. Dad died in 1968. AT the age of 59 black lung took his life. He is buried in Washington Park Cementray,In Indianapolis, Indiana Dad Left a wife eight daughter and 4 sons,and 54 grandchildren. My own children are now grown. They never knew my dad,My father-in- law Earl Howard Sr. was a coal miner in Letcher County,He died of black lung in 1995. He is buried in Mayking, Kentucky. My mother- in-law is now 89 years old and still grieving the last of her husband.The coal mines have taken so many at such a young age.

Comments:	8/17/07 I worked in the underground mines for different companies over a 14 year peroid, from 1973 to 1987, the first was West Coal Company, based out of Oneida, Tennessee, but the mines were located in McCreary and Whitley Counties. Later at Middlesboro Ky. for Consolodated Coal Company. Then, Shamrock Coal Company in Pulaski County Ky. After laid off by Shamrock, I worked for Blue Diamond at Stearns, Ky. until the mine shut down because of a deal with Georgia Power and the Company in 1987. The Company accepted a 35 million dollar deal from Ga. Power to void their contract, and overnight, hundreds of miners in McCreary county lost their jobs. I no longer work in the coal mines, but in my blood, heart and soul I will alway be a coal miner. I loved the mines, and brothers I worked with. I have great memories of those days, and will treasure them always. I now work for Vulcan Materials Company, who ownes 162 stone quarries, 33 sand and gravel plants, 64 sales yards, 43 asphalt plants, and 26 ready-mixed concrete facilities. I am a lab tec in quality control in the largest granite quarry in the US, in Norcross Georgia. This December I will have worked 20 years for this company...12/30/87 to 12/30/07. Although I work in granite mining, COAL will always be king to me......Steve Gilreath

Comments:	Hello. This is a great website. My papaw, Sherd Martin, was a coalminer. He lives in Letcher County, KY in Millstone. He turned 100 this year in June. I have a problem with these new fly by night coal companies that are destroying our beautiful mtns by mtn top removal and strip mining. Like you say in your intro,coal miners and their families have to fight from birth to death, the only thing that has changed is the weapons used. These days we must use scientific data, no more jack rocks and dynamite,but the coal companies can use dynamite and put crap on our roads that is worse than jack rocks.

He always talked about 'Old Ms Mitchell' in the Bluediamond coal camp he worked in as a young man in Perry County, Kentucky. She was apparently a keeper of a boarding house, but that is all I know. Comments:	My grandfather, George E. Matthews, was a supervisor/manager type at Carrs Fork Coal Mine, probably soon after it opened, 1919, 1920's. He apparently was very unhappy with that job. He remarked that his horse and a dog were the only friends he had. He didn't stay there long. He was in his 60's by then. I have a photo that I could send you showing the bldg. with "Carrs Fork Coal Co." on it, when I find it again.

Comments:	I tried to submit some comments to the address listed as the submission site and was unable to do so. I will provide them here: I was born in the coal camp, in last row of camp houses which was called Hemphill. We lived in the 2nd house. All I can remember was we told everyone that we lived in the little blue house. My uncle lived in the first house and it was called the little yellow house. The size of these houses were approximately 12' X 33'. Bedroom, livingroom, and kitchen. Outhoused were located at the rear of the yard and on concrete forms. These were designed to house a couple with one child. When we moved, there were 7 of us living in that house. There's more infor on living conditions and would like to relate this information if there is another usable site to send it. The side is great. Thanks Bob Sexton

Comments:	My father James Earl Taulbee ,two of his brothers, Frank Jr. and Delmar Ray and my Grandfather Frank Taulbee were coal miners. They were employed with Kenmont Coal Company at Jeff, Kentucky. Papaw Frank begin working at Kenmont in 1915 after helping to start up the operation. He retired in 1950 as a foreman with the Company. My Daddy, my Grandfather,and my uncles took great pride in being coal miners. Mining coal is not the easiest work in the world, but they never considered it drugery either. Living in Kenmont Coal Camp was like living in a typical small town, where everyone knew and trusted everyone, no on elocked their doors even in my time there in the 60s when the Coal Camp era was drawing to a close. I have many of Daddy's pay envelopes, he paid $4.00 a month for the doctor, who was on call twenty-four hours a day and did make house calls. Coal Camp life was really not bad at all. I wish I could get Medical Coverage for $4.00 a month.

Comments:	My father, "Joe Henry", was a coal miner for a while. He lived in Darmont, Kentucky. So he probably worked in the coal mines there. He hurt his back and got out of coal mining. My mother was so worried about him that she insisted that he leave or else. He has been deceased for over 11 years now. I think my sister has one of his hats that he wore during the coal mining years. I tip my hat to all of the coal miners in Harlan, Kentucky. Comments:	I was a coalminer son and also a coalminer for over 28 years at the US Steel/Arch of Ky mines at Lynch & Cumberland mines from Oct 1970 to Jan 1998 when they closed down. R. Owens and me loaded the last train of coal from the Lynch Loadout which came from 33 mines and thur the 31 mine to the bottom of black mt. by way of the bole hole at Lynch, Ky. I was also one of the last ones that loaded the few last trains at Cumberland loadout while they was still work under the UMWA. My job was elect. worker but we done whatever job needed to be done. Now I work for CSX RR from 1998 till now, and do about the same job (elect.) as I did at the mines but with no coal dust and little mud. I do miss the good people I work with, many are gone, each time I go to Harlan,I find someone else has pass away. Its Hurts because most of the time they go too young because of the hard times at the mines.

Comments:	My father, Ted Browning started working in the mines when he was 14 years old. He lied about his age. He worked in many of the mines in Bell Co. Ky. and at Fork Ridge. He said he has done everything that's to be done in the mines, driving the motor, laying track, etc. He had slate fall on him and crushed his back, and chipped a piece of bone off his back. He was off work for 8 months. In 1946 our family moved to Visalia, CA. Our father didn't want his boys, 5 of us, to work in the coal mines. It's the best move he ever made. He was working at Premier Coal Mines in Middlesboro, Ky. when we moved. I'm glad he did.

Comments:	I'm a Coal Miners Daughter, Grand Daugther and Great-Grand Daughter. My great-grand father Lenoard Steffey was a Kentucky coal miner. I'm not aware of his complete history. But I do know that he was also a church of christ preacher and when he died in the 1980's he lived in Tram KY. He was married to Cynthia Anne (Fife) Steffey. Many of their children settled in Wyoming county WV. Along with them was their Daughter Bonnie Adkins and her family. Where my maternal grandfather worked the mines at Kopperston. When he was laid off there they moved to Bishop VA where my paternal grandfather Kester David Harman worked in the mines and lived with his wife Mary Lou (Sheets) Harman. And as fate would have it my Mom met my dad. A few years down the road my Dad returned to Wyoming Co, WV where he worked at theh Kopperston # 2 mine almost until it was closed. Then he continued to mine until he retired from Pea Body. I spent almost all of my first 18 years of life in the coal camps in Kopperston. We lost my great grandfather when I was in 4th grade. Both of my grandfathers died of black lung when they were in their late 70's. When my son was in 7th grade he did a social studies report on coal mining. My dad took him through the exhibition mine in Beckley WV. My son got an A on the paper. It was hard to tell who was happiest about it. But I believe we need to pass this knowlege about our heritage down to our kids. They need to know what fine stuff they are made of. I know my dad is my hero.

His father, Isaac Bond was a telegraph operator for the rail road and was killed in Lake Hebron, Fl. 1930. I would like to know more about both. Isaac M. The town has 5 letters with the 2nd letter hanging below the line (like Lynch, Squib, etc), my birthfather after serving in the Army in Korea lived with 2 of his 6 sisters briefly in Detroit (both married, one 30 & one 23 in 1953), the other 4 sisters were 29,25,16 & 12 in 1953, no brothers, his dad was a coal miner,parents in their late 40's at the time. I am doing a research paper for school, however, I am so very excited about learning more about my heritage and ancestry. Many of my relatives were involved somehow in the mines. My Dad has been gone for four years now and in honor of him and our heritage, I would like to correspond with someone who may be able to answer some questions. This web site gives me hope in that! Bond, was a telegraph operator for the L&N and others until he was shot dead in a Flordia outpost in 1930. Isaac's sister, Emma Bond Belvins Miller married E.S.Miller, who had a whole train named after him--I have the picture. And lastly, my mother's father was a miner who died in a coal mine in 1926, his name was Latha Wilson. I would love pictures of any of this and would be willing to share mine. Comments:	I just wanted to say that my Pawpaw worked in the eastern Kentucky coal mines for 52 years. I have an Uncle and a cousin that worked in coal mines through-out the area and an ex-husband and his Daddy, that also worked in those mines. I once worked for Belphry (sp.) Coal Co. @ a coal tipple in Johnson county, Paintsville, Ky. I live in Mobile, Al. now and have for quite a while. I still have a few lumps of coal with me from those days to remind me where I came from. The coal mines of eastern Ky. was all that my Pawpaw knew, my ex-Father-in-law also. I believe that everyone should go into a mine and experience the smell and sounds and how you can put your hand right in front of your eyes and not see it for the darkness. That they should wash the miners clothes too! Maybe people would understand what it really means to be a miner and understand the resource of coal. To experience how dangerous and hard it really is working in these mines and how low the pay is compared to the profits of the companies. Comments:	My father (Chad Nolan Hensley son of Calloway C Hensley b 10 Jun 1882 in Harlan Co d 19 Oct 1918 Harlan Co and Martha Nolan b 4 Oct 1887 in Harlan Co d 1981 Williamson, WV [she was the daughter of John Nolan b KY and Sarah Ann Shoupe b 18 Jun 1855 in KY]worked the cole mines as a young man. He made up his mind that he would not make a life of it and struck out on his own. He eventually walked on a car lot in Bakersfield CA. He had little, no money, an incomplete high school education, homeless, but with a family. Tough times had made him appreciate an opprotunity. He got a job selling cars and about 15 years later he was able to purchase his own dealership. He died in 1998, but he talked many times of his memories of growing up in coal country, the good people he knew, and the life lessons he learned.

My great-great Uncles were Henry Edd and Dave Osborne who were killed in the Three Points Mine Explosion of 1943 and my great-grandfather was Andy Osborne who was killed in 1960 when the car he was moving coal in overturned on top of him. Here is his obit: OBIT: NATHANIEL OWENS OBIT: Nathaniel Owens, age 59, of Route 2, city died January 4, 1966, at 10:30 p.m. after a long illness. Mr. Owens was born September 19, 1906, in Bell County, KY and was married to Reeda Owens who proceeded him in death. He had lived in Middlesboro all of his life and was employed as a coal miner, retiring in 1959. Mr. Owens was a member of the Meldrum Baptist Church. Survivors are seven sons, Wheeler, Dewey and John of Middlesboro, Luther, Fate and Nathaniel Jr., of Albion, Mich; and Clifford of Homer, Mich; daughters Alma Gibson of Middlesboro and Elizabeth Owens of Mighigan; three brothers, Wheeler Owens, Fate Owens and Matt Owens of Middlesboro, two sisters, Elizabeth Johnson and Lucy Richards of Middlesboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 1966, at the Meldrum Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Barnett Cemetery at Cannon Creek. The body will remain at the funeral home chapel until time for the service. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Friday. Pallbearers will be Junior Barton, Curt Barton, Creed Barnett, George Wyatt, Marion Wyatt, Eugene West, Wade Osborne, Lee Osborne, Roy Scott and Claude Barnett. Sunset Funeral Chapel is in charge. Comments:	Great photos. I remember the 1939 strike and the truckloads of National Guard. Strikes were a form of starve out, scheduled for spring when winter food supplies were just about used up and nothing was ready in the garden. I believe in and will always support Unions. Scabs quit crossing the swinging bridge at Insull after big John P. went out on the bridge to speak to one. His weight caused the bridge to flap so high when he walked that no one else ever wanted to try to make it across.

Comments:	My father James Luther Goodson Payne worked in Harlan before marrying my mother. They married June 5, 1942 so he was probably there during the trouble. I remember he called parts of it "Bloody Harlan" because of the happenings during the trouble there. He later moved back to Marion County, Tennessee. He died June 9, 1987 of plumoneuclueosis or black lung. It is an awful disease, especially for family members who have to watch them die.

I am seeking information on my great grmother; Pollyanna Smith Couch and What I know by family legend: She lived to be 108 years old, Born and died in same house Travis, Ky. Coal mines all around. Went to church in different homes each night Lived in the hills, walked everwhere and was well known for miles around. I believe my mother said she had to walk tracks to get to her place. My mother visited once in 1930 or 31. I don't know date of birth or death. She raised my mothers 1/2 brother and sister Brothe (William or Willy) and Lulu. I do recall that Lulu had a bad temper. I know that Willie moved to Ohio where I believe he became a police officer. If you have any information on Pollyanna, please contact me. I love the history as well as research.

Comments:	Hello, I just by chance caught the last part of "Harlan County War" on TV and then went straight to the computer and ran a search on Harlan County, KY. I came across your site and found it very interesting. I spent my earlier years in the midwest on the family farm, then in my mid-teens my parents moved back to their childhood home in southcentral Pennsyvania. We have friends in Clearfield County, which you may know is coal country; strip mine, mostly. We are also within 2 hours of Hazelton which has been a big coal area, both strip and underground. As a result I became somewhat familiar with the coal industry, and my love of history gave me an interest in the nostalgia of coal mining. Now into my thirties and having been driving tractor-trailer for 15 years I have had the fortune on a number of occasions to deliver equipment and supplies to several of the mines through southern VA, WV and KY. I have delivered track & tie, roof jacks, mine sheilds, and steel plate for the repair of dozer blades, drilling bits, etc. Sometimes it is quite a chalenge getting a 75 foot rig into some of the delivery points, more often than not loaded to maximum weight capacity, but I've always enjoyed the expeirences. It has also given me some good stories to tell. But from all these experiences it has given me a great respect and awe of the men that work the mines and the women and families behind them! Many of them are living and working in very similar ways to those that my grandparents worked on the railroad up north fouty years ago. Thank you for an interesting look into the mining industry.

Comments:	I would love to see any coal mining pictures from Knox or Bell County, Kentucky. My mother (Darlene Partin) was reared by her Grandparent's (John Robert and Phoeba Lee Partin. They did not have much money, but plenty of love. My Dad's father (George Honeycutt) was also a coal miner along with many Uncles. Also, Thanks for this site, it's hard to find Kentucky coal mining pictures or information.

Comments:	John W. Fagg was a miner for the Clover Fork mines from the early 1930's until he retired in 1958. He worked for the Whitfield family and was living in Kitts until he moved us to Florida in June of 1958. Instead of growing up with television I grew up on the stories of the union organization in the 30's. When returning to college in 1999 I choice this a topic for a research paper and was amazed at how the data I gathered mirrored the stories I had grown up on, right down to some of the names of mine owners and labor leaders. The men of that time and the women who stood by them had a strength this nation may never see again. Daddy and momma buried 5 childern on that hillside in Harlan and never forgot the struggle it took to feed the rest. Daddy never gave up his faith in God and country and died as proud as he lived.
