Companies I and F were from Marlboro, (raised there). I maintain a website that gives the history of the regt. in details. I'm always interested in receiving information about a soldier from the 13th Mass. I have a yahoo group for descendants of soldiers and a blog.

Gwe Gwe (Hello) - I am a decendant of Silas Rice and Marie Tsiakohawi. Silas Rice and his brother Timothy Rice were taken from Marlboro, Mass. on August 8, 1704 by an Iroquois raiding party and taken to Canada. Silas was born on April 10,1695 and died in Caughnawaga (modern name Kahnawake Mohawk Territory) in 1779. I trace my Iroquois lineage from Silas Tookanowras and Marie Tsiakohawi. Silas's lineage was Edmund and Tamazine Rice, Samuel and Elizabeth Rice and Edmund and Ruth Rice, who were the parents of Silas and Timothy Rice. I stopped by the St. Francis Xavier Mission Church in Kahnawake on one of my many visits back to see my family and asked about the church records. They were kept by the Jesuits who wrote down my family tree along with many others in Kahnawake. I was so intrigued by the history in my possession that my husband and I stopped in Marlboro, Mass. and asked about the Rice family and were given copies of their records. The Rice family history was the same and I had the rest of the history of Silas from the Mohawk/Iroquois side. I only recently discovered your website and it's great. Now you know that Silas lived on through the centuries through my people. My father was Joseph Katsiehaien Hemlock from Kahnawake Quebec Canada. He was born March 2, 1922 in Kahnawake. My dad married my mother, Vivian Seth (Irish) in 1948 and made their home in Johnstown, PA. We traveled back to Kahnawake several times a year all through my life to visit family. I am his daughter, Susan Kaienteres Hemlock-Vizza and live in Johnstown, PA. There are many Rice families in Kahnawake and my great-aunt and great-uncle were Angus and Ida Rice. Just wanted to share the history of Silas and I hope if there is anyone who can add to this or has any questions that I could answer, please get in touch. Ona (Good-bye)

All I know so far is that my Great Grandfather Timothy arrived from Ireland in the 1860s and the family mostly worked, as so many did, as shoe workers.

Received the following email
John -
If you haven't seen this new material that I have spent the last five years sorting out - you might want to add it to the notes on Marlborough families -- or put it anywhere you deem logical --
Thanks,
Judy Schreiber
The first William Kerly, born abt 1602 at Ashmore, Dorset, England, married an Ann White in England in 1625. They had 3 recorded and surviving children, Mary b. 1627, married Richard Smith, Sr; Henry b. 1632; and William, Jr b. 1633, all at Ashmore. He is noted in the History of Sudbury as having been there by 1637 and is known to have married two more times after the death of Ann White Kerly in 1658 at Lancaster, Britchet Bradstreet Rowlandson and Rebecca Jude Josselyn, Rebecca having survived as his widow when he died in 1670 at Lancaster.
A second William Kerley, Capt., b. 1621 according to "Ages from Court Records 1636 to 1700, Vol.I: Essex, Middlesex, and Suffolk Counties,Massachusetts"; Melinde Lutz Sanborn, Gen.Pub.Co., 2003
-William Kerly....age 45 in 1666....MCC folio 40
-William Kerly.....46 in 1667....MCC folio 44
is the William I believe to be the William who came to America aboard "The Confidence" in 1638 with whom is commonly believed to be his brother Edmond, b. 1616 according to the listing of passengers for that ship. He (William) is thought to have gone directly to Sudbury but I have found this listing in a posting on the internet which has since been removed, probably because of it's inflammatory content -
http://members.aol.com/wdwylie6/1600-1649.htm
1641 - On December 7, “William Kersley shall personally appeare at the next General Court of our said soueraigne lord the King, to be holden for this gouernment, to answere to all such matters as shalbe (on his said master's behalf) objected against him for vncleane carriages towards men that he hath lyen withall, and abide the further order of the Court, and not depart the same without lycence; that then, et cetera.ö 241
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn=william&gsln=kersley&=&f5=&f6=&f7=&f16=&f17Day=&f17Month=&f17Year=&gskw=&prox=1&f17=++&db=greatmigrationindex&ti=0&ti.si=0&gl=&gss=rfs&gst=&so=3
With ANTHONY ANNABLE, Henry Rowley was bondsman for William Kersley of Barnstable on 7 December 1641 [PCR 2:28].
(The name Kersley is also noted as a spelling for Kerley.)
We know this second William appears in Sudbury around 1645/6 as that is when he married Anna King, daughter of Thomas King, another of the first settlers of Sudbury. This William is noted in Marlborough in 1669 where he died in 1684, his widow Anna surviving him there, and I believe this couple to be the parents of Bartholomew, b. according to: "American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) about Bartholomew Carley
Name: Bartholomew Carley
Birth Date: 1650
Birthplace: Massachusetts
Volume: 25
Page Number: 70
Reference: Gen. Column of the " Boston Transcript". 1906-1941.( The greatest single source of material for gen. Data for the N.E. area and for the period 1600-1800. Completely indexed in the Index.): 22 Mar 1933, 6185 " -- (This Bartholomew is commonly attributed to be a son of Capt. Henry Kerley and his first wife, Elizabeth White Kerley, who was killed during the Massacre at Lancaster in 1676, but there is no mention of any other survivors of the Kerley family, other than known children of that couple. [Henry married the following year, Elizabeth Ward Howe, daughter of William and Elizabeth Ward of Sudbury and Marlborough, widow of John Howe, Jr., and they had at least 4 children, two daughters named and noted in his Will and at least two sons, unnamed, but noted by one of Henry's biographer's, as being the Mariner, William Carley, who was married to Mary Bowden in Boston in 1703 by Cotton Mather, and whose son, William, Jr was the founder with wife Martha Patty Carter Kerly, of the Kearley family later of VA and NC.] Bartholomew appears to be the only child of William and Anna.)
The third William, b. 1633 in England, son of the first William, married a Jane Unknown at Sudbury in 1666 and was buried in the Robbins Cemetery, East Village of Lexington in 1719 along with his wife Jane, who also died there in 1721. This William left Sudbury and appears to have lived from 1670 to 1675 at
Lancaster, but not at Marlborough at all. Their children were all females and are noted in his Will of 1719 along with his widow, Jane.
Almost all of the written history of this family is centered around this second William, b 1621, although it is noted in the Sudbury history that there was a William, Sr, (b 1602), who most attribute to be the second William and claim that he, the first William, is the one who came to America on the Confidence -- an impossibility when one stops to thoroughly read this above information. This William, Sr was the person responsible for the laying out of roads and designing of bridges in the Sudbury/Lancaster area and was generally associated with other settlers of the same age group, whereas the second William was tied to the Colony Artillery and involved in the defense of these townships during the King Phillip Wars.

Back in 1962 through 1985 Marlboro was my home. Mechanic Street and the surrounding streets, Where a lovely place to grow up. This area was what Movies could have been based on... neighborhood & Family cookouts, outdoor sleep overs, playing "tin can oleno" with my neighborhood pals until we couldn't see in the dark any more, and going to the corner store (Marciarelli's)for my Mum or Memere and and while I'm there maybe 1 or 2 peices of penny candy for me. French Hill for years (where my Memere and then my Mom and her siblings grew up) - was just that "French Hill". But as they say, all good things must come to an end and alass my Marlboro is not a "Country Kind of City anymore" It is just a city. No more knowing just about everybody that lived there, no more walking home from the park or local tavern after 10:00 P.M., no more French Hill. But I am so Glad I knew Marlboro when, and no one can take those glorious memories from me and that is the Marlboro I think of when I hear that city's name and it makes me smile every time...
Betsy Turcotte, past resident of a Rice Homestead @ 140 Mechanic Street - owned by three generations Marie Cormier, then her Daughter Helene Turcotte and her family. Thanks for letting reminisce.

We are trying to connect and Ebenezer Pratt who settled with Abel Stevens and a group of Baptists among Loyalist settlers in Bastard Township, Kitley, Leeds, Ontario. He is not on the loyalist lists. We believe he came from Shrewsbury, Mass. to Marlboro,Vt. and may have been the son of Alpheus Pratt. There are "no records" other than those in Ontario and this Ebenezer born in 1757. If he is our Ebenezer then there should be a marriage to an Anne, births of children either in Mass. or Vt. We are trolling the records to see if we can find the key.

From one of the Marlborough directory listings it seems "Sasseville" without the "r" was prevelant in town (that's the way our family spells it too). Any clue on the bottles and the business that I. Sasseville had on Lincolm St.? I could e-mail you photos of the bottles if that helped. Thank you.

Pat,
My great great grandfather was William Brewin who lived in the Old Arcade on South Street. A number of families lived there. I put something on this site once from a different reference book - published in 1895 and about the History of the Archdiocese of Boston which my father's father had in his house on Rice Street in Marlborough:
"The Catholic Church of New England" I believe that the James Sullivan is the editor and it was published in Boston in l895. This book has many additional details on the founding of the Immaculate Conception Church than was provided by the Ella Bigelow version and also has some details at variance with that version.
It states that, by l848, there were six Irish Catholic families in Marlborough.
"These Irish people were, above all things, ardent Catholics, and their faith was as much a part of their individuality, and more so, as their bone or sinews. Nothing was too hard to be overcome, if it interfered with their religion and conscience. So that, although they had at that time neither priest nor church in Marlboro, they would ride or walk to Worcester, sixteen miles away, of a Saturday night, after their week’s toil was over, in order to hear Mass on Sunday and return home on Sunday evening. P. 787
According to the text, by October, 1850, the Catholics in Marlboro made an effort to obtain a visiting priest and Rev. George Hamilton of Saxonville indicated he would be coming. Catholics in Marlboro, Feltonville, Rockbottom, Maynard and Southboro were notified that a priest was coming. Mass was said at the residence of William Brewin in the old arcade on the west side of South Street, in a small room, about 15 feet long and 12 feet wide. Although Fr. Hamilton stated he would be returning before Christmas, when that time came, he was unable to get to Marlboro. A committee was sent to Worcester to find a priest and they were able to find a priest, Fr. Mulledy, SJ at Holy Cross. After that, Fr. Mignault came from Webster to minister to the flock of both Irish and French Catholics. By May, 1851, Bishop Fitzpatrick sent Fr. Edward Farrelly to Marlboro to say Mass and he came every month. Eventually, Mass was said at the Town Hall. He was an excellent French scholar."
What do you think will happen to the Old Arcade?
My Brewin relatives came from the Drumshanbo area of Leitrim - I suspect that many other Irish in the South Street neighborhood also came from Leitrim - Kelleher, Campbell, Vaugh, McGee, Mee, Lynch, Giblin and Martin to name a few. Any other Leitrim-Marlborough connections?
Ellen Brewin

03-06-06 FYI! IC Church -- The Old Arcade, South St. This house is up for sale.
I was at a combined meeting of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists and Marlboro Historical Society for a lecture about Burke's of Marlboro. The speaker talked about this house and, it caught me quite by surprise because it is my friend's house. Her sister, who recently died, and her daughter live in the house. Since her sister's death, they have put the house up for sale.
Do you know why the house was called the "Old Arcade"?

I.C. Church
From Ella Bigelow's Book
Coming from overseas as did our own American forefathers from the oppression of England, the early Irish settlers were remarkably law-abiding and patriotic race. In the war of the Revolution and in our Civil war, Irishmen held their own with heroic deeds. Quoting Mrs. O. A. Cheney, "we place the name of Theobald Mathew, the Apostle of Temperance, beside that of John Eliot, the Apostle to the Indians, and we speak of John Boyle O'Reilly in the same breath with Henry W. Longfellow."
Few houses in Marlborough have greater interest than the one pictured to the left "The Old Arcade on South St.. Here lived William, father of Bernard Brewin ; Michael Burke, father of Michael and Thomas Burke; Walter Wall, father of Patrick Wall; and Patrick Quirk, father of John Quirk. In this house the first Mass in Marlborough was said by Father Hamilton (Rev. George Hamilton) who came from Saxonville to officiate.
After this first Mass in the Arcade, Father Hamilton never came to Marlborough, but Rev. John Farley of Milford used to come every Sunday to celebrate Mass in the old house of Lawrence Carey on Mulberry street, now Lincoln. In the latter house in 1851, Father Farley celebrated a midnight Mass the night before Christmas. The Catholic population of Marlborough then numbered we are told not more than twenty-five people. Today there is an attendance in the Church of the Immaculate Conception of 4,500, and in Saint Mary's church of 4,000, making a total of 8,500 souls.
The next priest to visit Marlborough was Rev. Napoleon Mignault of Webster, there being at this time several Catholic French families. At these services the French and Irish Catholics attended together, and the priest, a very eloquent gentlemen, preached both in French and English. When Father Farley first celebrated Mass the congregation was too large for a private dwelling, and as the weather was fine, Mass was celebrated in the open air on South street, an altar having been erected under the beautiful old tree in front of the house pictured above. After this, Mass was said every month. In those early clays, the Catholic settlers felt more and more strongly as time went on that they needed a church of their own, and upon Mt. Pleasant was the first little church built.
Rev. John Welch was the first resident clergyman and Rev. John A. Conlin, the second. The latter in 1867, was succeeded by Father Maguire who died in 1870. Rev. J. Delahanty was his successor and resided here over five years. Rev. James Donegan was settled here in 1876, and was followed by Father P. A. McKenna at whose death Father T. B. Lowney, the present pastor, succeeded. When the little church was erected on Mt. Pleasant, which commands an extensive and delightful prospect, the tower first built was extremely high. This was carried off by a terrific gale and a shorter tower was substituted. Later on the church itself was destroyed by fire, and in 1866 the Church of the Immaculate Conception was erected. It -,vas intended at first to build this of granite from the quarry near Jabez Huntington's homestead, but the stone proved so hard that brick was substituted. Some years later the church was remodeled to the present fine edifice.

Almost all of the information published in this site related to the Kerley family is incorrect. The Henry Kerley noted in the family history is not that of the senior Henry (Capt. Henry Kerley, b. 1632 in Ashmore, Dorset, England, m. 1 Elizabeth White who was killed in the massacre at Lancaster in 1676; m. 2 Elizabeth Ward Howe in 1677 Charlestown, MA; resided in Marlborough where he died in 1713. The Henry cited is Henry Jr, and leaves us with the impression that he married his step-mother, Elizabeth Ward Howe, widow of John Howe, Jr of Marlborough.
The bodies of William, Kerley/Carley,Jr, his wife Jane, and daughter Elizabeth are buried in the Robbins Cemetery of East Lexington, MA and are noted in Flint, James, ed. Robbins Cemetery Records, Orem Utah, Ancestry, Inc, 1999.
William's headstone states that he died May 13, 1719 ae 86yrs. As he is buried with his wife Jane, whose date of death is January 12, 1721 ae 70, we have to point out that this is proof beyond doubt that Jane did not die before him, that he did not remarry and that the William, Jr, who you are detailing is not William, Jr.
The William to whom you refer is probably the William who came to America in 1638 along with an Edmond who subsequently disappeared. This William is the man who married Anna (Hannah) King and who died in 1684 in Sudbury, but this is not the William, husband of Jane, who was in Lancaster, Marlborough or Lexington. The William who married Anna King is noted in court records -
"Ages from Court Records 1636 to 1700, Vol.I: Essex, Middlesex, and Suffolk Counties,Massachusetts"; Melinde Lutz Sanborn, Gen.Pub.Co., 2003
-William Kerly....age 45 in 1666....MCC folio 40
-William Kerly.....46 in 1667....MCC folio 44
By this reckoning, this William was born in or about 1621, whereas Capt. Henry and William, Jr. were born in 1632 and 1633, respectively. William, Sr is commonly estimated to having been born before 1600. Further, although the William b. 1621 did leave a Will noting Henry as his "brother", we have not been able to identify him as such, unless William, Sr had been previously married before his marriage to Ann White, or, that he was a close enough cousin to have been noted as "brother", which often occurred in those earlier times. We do not know. Nor does the New England Historical and Genealogical Society.
We also do know that the Mary who married the Richard Smith in your chronicle, was Mary Kerly, also the child of William, Sr. and Ann White Kerly, born in 1627 in Ashmore, Dorset, England.
Also, noted in William Kerley, Jr's Will- as published in Volume 2 of the History of Lexington by Hudson:
"William Carley died 13 May 1719, aged about 86, g.s.; wife Jeane ( ), died 12 Jan. 1721, aged about 70. He was taxed in Lexington May 1692, and subscribed to build the first meeting house. His will dated 22 Aug. 1716, probated 15 June 1719, named his wife Jane; son-in-law Samuel Locke; grandson William Whittaker ; daughters Mary Johnson, Sara Arms, Lydia Tidd, Elizabeth Cerly, Hannah Whittaker, and Rachel Carley; he also left a bequest of twenty shillings to the Church of Christ in Lexington.
Children:
Elizabeth, d. 7 June 1719, aged 34, g.s. b. 1684
Rachel, d. 11 Sept. 1725, b 1675
Sarah, m. 23 Oct. 1714, Richard Arms of Lexington. b. 1668
Ruth (?) m. Samuel Locke b 1677
Hannah, m. Nathaniel Whittaker , b 1670
Mary, m. John Johnson, of Lexington, b 1667
Lydia, d. 14 Aug. 1727, aged about 55 g.s., m. 21 Dec. 1694 Daniel Tidd. b 1672"
(I have taken the liberty of adding each of the daughter's years of birth.)
Someday, someone will get this all correct - hopefully!!

I am curious about the way you have worded info on his brother Martin Luther........you stated that he graduated from Williams College in 1813 and went into practice first in Marlborough and then in Northborough....do you know what kind of practice?

I've researched my family tree from Marlboro(paternal side) and Framingham (maternal) back to 17th century Italy, I am now preparing to write a family history. Having researched the social, political, and economic conditions in Italy in the late 19th and early 20th century that explain why all my grandparents left Italy to start new lives in the U.S.A., I now want to determine the the factors that made my paternal grandparents and their paesani from their small town in Italy settle in Marlborough. My research at the Marl. Pub. Lib. failed to uncover any documentation about the major wave of Italian immigration into Marlboro that occurred from the last decade of the 1800's up to about 1930.

I am doing research on the Burke family for a presentation at the Marlborough Historical Society on Feb. 22, 2005. Al Brigham thinks it was where the bank is now near McDonald's close to the beginning of Framingham Rd. If you have any information on this I would really appreciate hearing from you.

They were both from Marlborough, and their son Gershom died in the area, but I didn't find mention of either Rebecca or Samuel's deaths in the Vital Records. Thanks for your work on establishing a web site. As soon as I have correctly cited my sources I will post my genealogy too. Fran Patten

Thank You for allowing us to view all this wonderful info. I have read the "Howe Genealogies Book" several years ago, through the short term inter-library loan. I have wished I could have it on hand to keep referring back to, as we find more info on my Howe relatives. We can't make the connection because no one knows the first name of my Gr. Gr.
Grandfather Howe, nor anything about his wife. My
Gr.Grandfather was William Ruey Howe b. 1813 somewhere in VT. d. in Central Kansas about 1888; he had a brother Charles C. Howe b. 1821 somewhere in N.Y. Please, how can I find this first name without any paper trails? Family story goes, He was suppose to be a 50 yr. Sea Captain Howe around "Lake Champlain". Does anyone connect to my family?

Hi, I was walking along in Marlborough, headed downtown, when I decided to stop at an old cemetery because I was curious about how old the stones were. On my way out, I spotted the marker for "Four Praying Indians" Died 1665, Disturbed 1951, Reburied 1992. This *really* got my curiosity up, I was thinking "Disturbed how?" and "What took 40 years?". Your site has cleared that up quite nicely; thanks for posting that story.
