Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) Alexander Keith b 1681- d 1721
If they immigrated, to what country & when? USA Maryland, abt 1707
Do you still have known relatives living here? No
Comments:
Most people say he was born in Fetteresso, near Stone Haven but so far there are no known antecedents. He married Christianne Farfar of another Scots family, in 1708 in Maryland shortly after his immigration about 1707. Any background information would be welcome.

My grandmother was a Keith, tracing back to William Keith (1681). The family tradition is that he was from Kincardineshire with connections to Dunnottar Caste, but so far this cannot be proved. He is the only known son of Kincardineshire in my line, although I have at least 10 Scots ancestors who immigrated to the America about the same time, from 'Scotland' (3), from Edinburgh (3), from Ayrshire (1), from Ross (1) and from Glasgow (2).

If they immigrated, to what country & when? Pennsylvania, USA
Do you still have known relatives living here? No, but I doubt it.
Comments:
It is wonderful that there is enough interest in this subject that this website has been created. It looks to be a fabulous resource.

I am trying to make a connection between my earliest Scots-Irish ancestors in America and their families in Scotland and Ireland.

William Barclay (born 1669 in Scotland, died 1732 in Lancaster, PA.) married is first or second cousin (I believe), Mary (or Maria) Barclay (born 1669 in Ireland, died 1757 in Lancaster, PA.) in 1690 at the Friends Meeting House in Dublin. They emigrated to Pennsylvania in the same year.

I have always been told by family members who have done some genealogical research that the records at the Dublin Meeting were destroyed in a fire and therefore “weö were at a dead end as far as establishing connections to our ancestors in Scotland and Ireland.

Recently I came across an old letter that suggested that William and/or Mary were related to Colonel David Barclay of Kincardineshire and his son Robert Barclay, the early Quaker apologist. The letter said, “The tie in to these are the official records of births, marriages, and deaths of the Dublin Monthly Meeting at Friends Meeting House, 6 Eustace Street, Dublin Ireland.ö

I have written the Dublin Meeting, but if there are some avenues I might pursue in Kinecardineshire that you would recommend, I would appreciate it.

I am born and living in Norway, married and father of 3 and grandfather of 4, now retired from work and have taken up the family research and genealogy as I have got plenty of time for a sometimes quite timeconsuming, but very interesting exercise. Now to the point of this mail. I have become grandfather of a boy, born in 2006, carrying the interesting name Leon Barclay de Tolly Nitter. His father, and married to my daughter, is Finn Christian de Tolly Nitter born in 1984, and his father again Barclay de Tolly Nitter. The grandmother, still living and becoming 82 years of age in June 2009, have mentioned several times that one of their ancesters was famous and there should exist a statue of him in Estonia or Russia somewhere. This intriguing information has led me to do some research and I have found that there indeed was a brave Russian General, named Field Marshal Prince Barclay de Tolly, who served for the Russian army during the early 1800's. He was Minister of War for Russia during Napoleons invasion of Russia, an invasion which was defeated in 1812. As I understand it, he became an hero, and still is a hero in Russia and even now in recent years the Russians honor him. This Barclay de Tolly's christian name was probably Michael (in English spelling). He died in 1818. As late as 2007 there was a new statue of him raised in Kalingrad, the Russian enclave at the Baltic Sea. Can this Michael Barclay de Tolly be an ancestor to the Barclay de Tolly family branch in Norway, or is there another branch of Barclay de Tolly known to have had connections to Norway? For more information on the recent statue in Kalingrad see http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1B1-356582.html

With kind regards and hope for some respons

Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) William Douglass
Comments:
My William Douglas was born early to mid 1700s but I am unable to verify. He married Catherine (Katherine) Skene in 1779 at Burn o' Binny, Banchory Ternan, Kincardineshire. It looks as if she was born 1750 at Kincardine O'Neil, Kincardineshire and was the dau. of William Skene and Margaret Cushney - again not verified. My line from this is through Francis Douglass born 1792 (Elizabeth Smith), William Douglas born 1824 (Mary Ann Low), Alexander Douglas born 1868 (Eliza Mutch Smith). The following addresses in Kincardineshire are part of their background - Murtle/Murthel,Cairnywhin/s,Craiglea/Craigton, Cairnwhilly/Cairnquhillie.

Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) George Greig
If they immigrated, to what country & when? Australia
Do you still have known relatives living here? yes
Comments:
My request relates to my efforts to write a story on the 104 men from my town who died during the First World War.
I am not related to George.
He was the son of Robert and Catherine Anne Milne Greig, he was born in Little Bogburn, Kincardineshire.
He had a brother Jack who also migratted to Australia, another brother served in the Gordon Highlanders.
I would like to interchange information on the man,
eg Does his name appear on a war memorial in Scotland?
Would any of his family like a copy of my story?
I think these men should be remembered and would like to see Georges story known in his home town.
Thanking you in anticipation
Harry from Scone in New South wales Australia

If they immigrated, to what country & when? Australia pre 1850
Do you still have known relatives living here? unknown
Comments:
I have been unable find when and how John Gordon came to Australia but his younger brother Alexander b 5.7.1821 came out on the John Bull in 1848. Other Gordons on the John BUll were Isabella Gordon, Ann Gordon,MAry Gordon, Margaret Gordon & James Gordon.

Whilst I have proven that my John Gordon and Alexander Gordon were brothers, I have not yet traced the remaining Gorons but James and Margaret may have been related to John and Alexander as they had a brother James b 24.5.1823 and a sister Margaret b 9.8.1816.

Other family names on the female lines are Allerdyce, Webster, Japp, Longmuir, Coutts.

Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) John Clark,Fettercairn 25/6/1785
Do you still have known relatives living here? montrose
Comments:
After a very long layoff in researching my Clark family tree, I've started once more to have a "another look". My furthermost back ancestor would appear to be a David Clark
( farm servant) born ? Redheugh, Fordun. unfortunately I cannot "prove" a link to him.

My second furthermost back ancestor was a John Clark (farm servant) b. 25/6/1785 in Fettercairn d. 4/10/1849, Marykirk.
He married an Elizabeth Blackie b.1781, Fettercairn
d. 7/8/1864, at Ottyhill, Marykirk

Elizabeth Blackie's parents were father John ( agricultural labourer) mother Helen Cowie ?

And that's where I'm stuck these past few years. Any advice, contacts, or help to send me in the right direction once again would be gratefully appreciated.

sincerely John D Clark

Comments:
John Gordon settled in Romsey in Victoria where in 1862 he married Isabella Agnes Gullett b 1841 Elvetham Hampshire daughter of Henry Gullett and Isabella Keats. Her family apposed the marriage we presume because of the difference in age, however we have a copy of a letter written by her brother Henry Gullett saying that he thought it a suitable marriage.

They had four children Ethel Isobel Gordon b 1865, Isabella Gullet Gordon b 1867, John Keats Gordon b 1869 and Elsie Helen Maude Gordon b 1877.

I am descended from Ethel Isabel Gordon.

John Gordon died in 1904.

John's brothers are also mentioned in the letter but whether they stayed in Australia has not yet be ascertained.

I have the date of the marriage of Andrew Morrice and Helen Grant (Formally Main) September 17th 1892 at Dunottar.

On Rootsweb there is a Andrew Morrice born in Nigg, Kincardineshire 30 Aug 1842 this could pissibly be my GGrandfather, if this is the case then the file goes back to John Forbes and Anna Donald born in the early 1700's

If they immigrated, to what country & when? Brookline Mass
Do you still have known relatives living here? Unknown
Comments:
Upon further study...Margaret was born in Kincardine O'Neil
and lived on or near the Laird of Lamonts property. As a young girl she moved with her family to Aberdeen. Later she sailed to Boston to work as a servant for a wealthy US family. While there she met a Canadian girl, Harriet Harrison who invited her to come to Canada for a visit. Margaret would later fall in love and marry Harriets brother, Josiah (my great Grandfather)
There are several photos that Margaret had with names on the back: George Muckle, Edna Klokow of #3 Affleck Place and Flood family members. I am really curious to know if there are any remaining cousins still in Aberdeen. Also could someone tell me what the Kincardine O'Neil area is like.

Peter JOHNSTON/E c1785-1863 son of Archibald Johnston/e (teacher) was born in Halifax Nova Scotia, but had returned to Scotland by 1812 where he was living in Oldmachar. In 1812 he married Margaret MENNIE from Nigg and settled there as a crofter in Kincorth by River Dee. In 1816 Peter and Margaret had a son Robert and Margaret later died. In 1825 Peter married Marjory ABERDEIN and they had six children - 3 died in infancy. Peter lived in Nigg for the rest of his life. I would like to know if anyone else is researching this Johnston/e line and any leads to Archibald his father. On Peter's death certificate it did not name his mother - his young son-in-law, Thomas PIRIE, husband of Peter's daughter Elizabeth, was the informant.

Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) PETER JOHNSTON/E from Nova Scotia
If they immigrated, to what country & when? In Oldmachar & Nigg 1812 from Halifax Nova Scotia
Do you still have known relatives living here? Not Known - looking for them
Comments:
On Peter's death certificate it did not name his mother - his younf son-in-law, Thomas Pirie, husband of Peter's daughter Elizabeth, was the informant.

Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) Andrew Davidson birth abt.1840
Do you still have known relatives living here? Possibly
Comments:
My g-grandmother was Isabella Irvine Davidson, she married Robert Stephenson. The family were very well known in Aberdeen for their sporting prowess and involvement in music. All their children became well known musical identities. I am searching for the Davidson family who I am fairly sure came from around Banchory-Ternan. I have found an Andrew Davidson and Margaret Irvine, with a daughter Isabella, all with matching dates. Andrew and Margaret were married in 1864 and had at least 5 children. I am wondering if there is anyone who recognises the family and/or may be related. My name is Fiona and I am the daughter of Isabella's grandson Robert Sinclair, who emigrated to Australia in the 1950's.
Thank-you, Fiona.

Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) Charles Robbie 1854??
If they immigrated, to what country & when? Australia 1890's
Do you still have known relatives living here? do not know, quite probably
Comments:
Charles Robbie was my Great great grandfather, he was born in Marykirk around 1854. He was my maternal grandmother's grandfather, and he was a full cousin to Dame Nellie Melba (Helen Porter Mitchell - Australian Soprano superstar). They had a Mitchell grandmother in common. It is a long time since I have had my data regarding this in front of me. Charles Robbie worked as a horticulturalist and was buried at Botany Cemetery New South Wales. His wife mary baird died soon after their arrival in Australia, leaving Charles to bring up the young family. I named my youngest son Robbie Alexander to carry this Kincardine name forward. In 1989 my twin brother and I visited Marykirk and Dunotter before heading across the Grampians to Wick and Keiss where the Alexanders (Alshersones) are from. A day I will never forget.

Who was your earliest ancestor? (name & year) William Mackey, 1870s
If they immigrated, to what country & when? Northern Ireland, 1700s
Do you still have known relatives living here? Don't know
Comments:
My late father, William Elliott Mackey, was born in Strabane, Co. Tyrone, Nth. Ireland in 1924. The family had connections with Co. Donegal in the Republic of Ireland & also in England, in the Liverpool area where I believe some distant relatives may be living. We also had a (now long deceased) sister of my grandmother on my father's side living in Kingussie - maiden name of Benson. The names Mackenzie & Unsworth also crop up in our family through the generations; the former name is now one of my sister's middle names while the latter is one of my middle names.
My father told me of his Scottish ancestry and our ancestors, he believed, were part of the process of the Ulster Plantation when Scottish people were relocated to the north of Ireland during the 17th & 18th centuries.
My information is very sketchy I know, but I'd appreciate a few tips on how to trace my Scottish roots.
Many thanks & kind regards,
Nicholas Mackey
