I don't remember many names. I do remember a squadron party under the parachute. I was on nites and found the steaks we ate in a pallet.Delivered them to the hill. Also a "Rodeo' we had. I won a 3 day inland pass,200$, and got to drive the ist 40k up to the 1st c5 to land at CRB.1970.
Saw the c123 crash in the bay trying to land. Sure was a long time ago.

Went over in Dec. 69. I had a twin brother, Gary Wakefoose, that came over in 70 to join me. He was a sheet metal mechanic. I done a one month TDY at Tuy Hoa AB working on the little O2 FAC push pull airplanes. I was 43151A. Servicing, preflight and postflight inspections, etc. I was only a little over 18 years old when I went over. What a way to grow up, egh ?? This old time Staff Sarge that lived in my hooch got me so drunk one time on rum, that to this day, I can't even stand the smell of it !! Got medivaced to Philly Navel Hospital 10 months into tour cause of feet infections. Yeppers. I remember the dinky dows, mamma sans, number 10 Gi's, etc. I am glad I came across this site. Later guys !!

I drove a bus loading passengers, Cleaned up lost and found baggage, started up the Fleet Service. I remember having to sweep sand around the terminal every morning. The POL Area got hit and made a big fire. Several days and nights filling sand bags to prepare for a Typhoon (then sleeping thru it). Going to NaTrang on a bread run to make hogies to sell in support of an orphanage. Getting sun burned at the beach. Water skiing at the R&R center. Dubbing tapes at the tape center. Standing on the back of the latrine service truck and the stewardesses squatting down and tossing cherries out of left over fruit salads and giving a good show as they did it, nice to see some round eyes legs. Going on AF One and getting a drink from the steward when Johnson came through, man was he tall.

What duty section were you in? Flight line - load - unload
Comments:
Any aircraft that carried cargo, that was where I was at.
Off duty - beach - tent city - drinking beer - music -
played in a giant sand box that didn't go away. The sand
followed you everywhere you went. Eat sand, sleep sand, dream
sand. I haven't been fond of sand since. When someone wants
to go to the beach, I suggest visiting the mountains. Never
will forget the year at cam rahn. good-bad-ugly

Comments:
Got there around Jan 12, '66 and had to setup our tent that night or sleep under the stars. Have some pictures taken around the base if anyone is interested. Would like to hear from any of the guys that were tent mates.

Had a TDY to Tuy Hoa in mid '66 where there were only 2 tents and what was said to be the shortest runway in country. One of my tent mates was TDY Tuy HOA in Jan '66. He was from Oklahoma as I recall. It was our tent that threw the Bar-B-Q and cookouts in the air transportation area which was on the row to the west of the AP outfit.

Welcome Home from the "Sand Pit" all of you fellow 14th Aerial Port guys.

hi! if you're reading this i guess you survived, so welcome home! i worked for the support group most of my tour building towers & bunkers, then went to ranger flight security & worked phantom flight security during tet. i was there for the p.o.l. fire & also the fireworks at the tri-service bomb dump! went to tiger lake a couple of times, the beach by the gravel pit a lot, & the seamans club at south beach. also visited the head shop at the u.s.o. club to pick up "supplies" & black light posters. met a lot of great human beings there, like the guy who worked for red horse in the lumber yard, he had a nice 4 stem brass water pipe! spent some time on herky hill with the guys who flew back from thailand with the 2lb coffee cans filled with "sticks"!worked with jim newell, jake beahan, ned douma, dennis keeney, red baldwin & others. lots of good memories, like the night,on my birthday march 12th, when some jackwagon put cs grenades on the a/c intakes at the nco club! also liberated a deuce& 1/2 from the army & painted our unit numbers on the bumper, then somebody liberated it from us! man, i could write a book! dutch, if you're out there, let me know. i sure enjoyed that 2 weeks in fort worth over Christmas! jim jacobson

I remember keeping the frige full of beer, and the guys paid me 20 cents a can; it cost 10 cents a can at the BX; no one complained. Hello all, just found this site, brings back mostly great memories. Loved the beach, didn't really care for fleet service. Any way, I recently found a unit page for 14th apsq on Military.com, and there I found this posting (8 May 2012)by Terry Craycroft concerning the webmaster of this site Bob Craycroft. Sad news for sure. I'm pondering
Memorial Day.

Bob (Robert) Craycroft

Hi folks, I am Bob's sister Terri. First, Welcome Home to all and thank you all for your service. Bob passed away on May 29, 2011. I've spoken with a couple of his buddies from the 14th Aerial Post Squadron and would like to meet more. I would like to get to know more about my brother. R.I.P Bob.

Had an occasional C-141 or even a Worlds Airways 707 or DC-8. One of those "I wouldn't have missed it for the world or done it again for a million bucks. Ended up making the Air Force a career and retirs in 1989 as a MSgt.

Started thinking about Cam Rahn Bay on this Memorial Day. Worked as a radio operator. Made a lot of phone patches for guys calling back home at the MARS Station. We had crystal clear voice communications most of the time. Pretty sexy conersations. After a while you didn't listen to the words; just waited to hear the word "over" so I could switch it so the other party could talk. We made a lot of people very happy getting to talk to a loved one 10,000 miles away.

Worked the night shift at the ammo dump. Reassigned to Phu Cat in early 1970 until July of 1970 due to the drawdown of troop levels. Good times at both bases. Fondest memory was augmentee duty on Christmas Eve 1969. Second on the list was how brilliant the stars were at night. Served in Nam with the best bunch of guys ever, hands down.

Glad to find this again. I tried before to post but couldn't. I am fighting a ptsd claim and trying to remember
time of events. Anyone remember the C-123 crashed on inbound just at the waters edge? The night the
fireworks let loose...was watching a flick and the apc fired up and rounds went everywhere and a minigun
was called in. Some airman got hit in back when a "stray" rocket landed near the chow hall on herky hill.
And what was the tdy some of us would go to for a day or so to offload and load stuff way out in the
boonies. We took a lift out there and brought it back. oh well, I am rambling. Some of the pics I saw
before brought back a lot of memories. Remeber some of the faces, used to have pics but lost all of them.
Remember 2 puppies on the desk of the dispatchers. And the written "sign" on the window "do not feed the
animals" ahhh, the memories.

Three and a half tours. Wierd times - Good friends (to this day). 29150 comm center & NCOIC NCMO. If it wasn't for ration cards, 6 bottles and 6 cases, probably wouldn't have survived. Over the years, 1989 ran into John Delore (crypto) and Dennis Thrasher (crypto & NCMO) in Long Beach... there was no scotch left in LA County when we finished visiting! Stay in contact with Robby Robertson, Bradwell, Delore, Thrasher, and just heard from Rich Gaddy and Joe Flynn. Arrived Tet 69 knowing I would die. Does anyone remember the MIG-21 sitting on the runway with the red star on its tail? Or the deuce-and-a-halfs flying by the NCO club loaded with short people, black PJ's, Mamasan hats, AK-47s loading up on the silver Air America birds? Sand everywhere, I used to go down to the gunroom and clean my rifle at least once a week, to make sure it would work if I ever needed it. I remember sitting out on the "Freakbench" smoking, and then going up to where the juicers were and inviting them to bring some beers out and join the party. Some guys called me the junkie juicer because I could fit in with both groups. I was one of the lucky guys that got transferred to CCK in march 72 to finish out our tour, then went TDY to Takhli Thailand in may 72 to offload the stuff for the F 111s and fell in love with Thailand, Live there now in the hills above Chiang Mai. I remember a lot and can't remember more, the names of most of the people have faded. I went to LZ Betty ( Phan Thiet ) day one of my tour. There were 6 of us from the 14th APS and 8 other Air Force personnal on LZ Betty. They maintained and flew spotter planes. I can't remember the outfit I remember they worked hand and hand with the Army spotter plane group called Saehorse. My drinking buddies. Headed by Sgt. Engles. Staff Sgt Arron Ganes was our NCO. I remember a dude from Florida his name was Marcus and Ron Smith like me they drank to much. I remember others but they were two of the most memerable.
I spent 18 months on Phan Thiet saw and did alot. I would have stayed another 6 months but CRB said I was there long enough that I could extend but I'd have to come back to city life in Cam Rahn Bay. To much BS for me to handle, so they shipped my butt to McGuier AFB in Jersey until Jul 1971 where I once again became a civilian.
Ha .... a closing thought:
I sometimes can still smell the fish sauce the Vietmanese call nuoc mam. That's one of the thoughts I'd like to forget.

I think I was too scared to remember anyone outside of inbound cargo processing. I remember SSgt Deaton, he loaned me his camera. My room mate was Amn James. Captain Horton sign both of my APRs, but damned if I remember him. I remember the ammo dump, think I was in-country about a month when it blew. Anyone remember the dog that would ride the shuttle bus to the east side of base and then come back to Herky Hill for dinner? My dorm room was in the same one where the orderly room was; second floor directly above the latrine. Someone said a cook crapped in the Thanksgiving dinner; don't remember that at all. I have a picture of when we painted the inbound cargo shack; SSgt Deaton put on a gas mask and Jackie Hays was laughing his ass off! I retired after 26 years; except for the last four years (I was a First Sergeant) I was an Air Transporter. Proud to have serviced with you all; welcome home and God Bless.

My thanks for making this web site. I have contacted a few fellow Herky Hill buddies over the years - Lou Horwitz Dennis Brandon and Jackie Hays, but names are getting harder to recall. Does anyone remember a guy named Frost (worked the orderly room 1970), that we all affectionately called Frosty? I have two distint memories- the bomb dump in AUG 71 and the cook who shit in the 1971 Thanksgiving dressing sending manny of us to the hospital.

I was the OIC of the Tri Service ATCO (TMA MACV) there in the 14 APS terminal. I had contact with Bill Spence who had worked there for several years, but haven't heard from in a couple of years. T/Sgt Dave Muse worked with me as our NCOIC. One of the best NCO's I ever new. We lived in the quonset huts up on the hill overlooking the beach. Friends included Tom Ormisher, Jim Bailey and Carl Weller from 14 APS and Mike Royce who ran the TS ATCO freight section. It was good duty for VN.

Comments:
I mostly worked in what was called Outbound Processing. We kept track of who left the county for home… every day. I was envious of the passengers …every day. They were going home…I was stuck there…in the 150F heat!
My section was also involved in US Customs, and some of us got impressed into Air Police Augmentee Program. We worked 12 hr shifts 11PM – 11AM. From 2:00 AM until just before dawn were is most unsettling hours as that was prime time for Charlie to mortar our position.
Do you guys remember the “gun-cardö? Your M-16 was locked up in the Orderly Room. God help us if we were over-run …albeit a fat chance. But...if we were attacked you would have to report to the First Sergeant, present your gun-card to retrieve your weapon and ammo…in an orderly fashion. No card –No Gun!
I was all but terrified the last two weeks of my hitch at CRB as the VC had stepped up terrorist operations on the base and we were on constant Red-Alert. I had the feeling I was never going home
I remember a couple of my hooch mates Ken Quinlan and Rick Tysee, and a couple of guys in my section like a guy named Fisher, and a guy names Miles. I have lots of pictures.
Funny how all those names I vowed to remember have faded from my memory.
It was a great experience that I would never repeat.

I was never cut out for the millitary but I too, grew up there. I never wanted to be there and was glad to get out of there but being there was truely a life enriching experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've saddly forgotten most of the names except for a guy named Charlie Morrison. I remember a guy with little round "John Lennon" style specs, who reminded me of Isac Hays. Like everyone, I remember the the sapper attack on the ammo dump and a Herky bird that took a direct hit from a rocket (with POL bladders onboard) just before I arrived TDY in Da Nang.
I started out, in Line Loading, late shift, moved to Expedite, then to Pax Svs. dispacher / information booth but while there we all did whatever needed doing, including Fleet Svs. (yuck)
So you might remember me (not so much, by name) I'm a white guy, 6'4", sandy hair, originally from Michigan, nickname, Race.
I love this site. Thanks for everything. Welcome Home, guys.
Cheers, 73,

I don't think I ever met any of the guys on here but, I was with the 2nd aerial port group out of Tan Son Nhut from June 1968-June 1969. The Commander of the 14th APS during the time I was there was Lt. Col Hewitt. Perhaps someone will remember him. A great guy!!

I flew into and out of Cam Ranh Bay/Nha Trang many times as courier and I went around Vietnam, in country, giving talks on how to fill out forms for assistance, medals, etc.

I was also assigned to the 2nd APG orderly room as we oversaw all activities of the 8th, 14th, and 15th APS.

Perhaps we can chat some. I got out of service in 1971. I would love to hear from any Aerial Porters!!!!

Thanks, SSgt Gary Broyles

Great site - just a very little before my time - I was one the last AF types out of CRB - Myself and 8 others were left there to remove 250,000 lbs of ammo and sepent one night in the HQ building then they came and took us to TSN - a mob team went back and got the ammo about two weeks later. When were you there exactly? Take a look at Google Earth to see what it looks like now.

Saw the posting by TSgt Thompson and already sent him an email.I had 2 full tours in Nam, Nha Trant the first one, and then to Misawa, Japan, then back to Vinh Long, OLAJ, 8th APS near Can Tho. Worked with some fine guys, who taught me the air freight business. I arrived as a cross-trainee from supply AFSC with 7 years active duty already, and was on OJT for a 3 level, but the troops whom I worked with trained me right, and I am forever grateful, as I had a great career in air Transportation, culminating at Scott AFB, HQ MAC Command Post as a Transportation Duty Controller. We authorized the reroutes on all MAC airlift if required, and 50 ton waivers on the C-5's. Retired in 1980, and live near Montgomery, AL. like to hear from other transporters. Corky

Humped veggies in Dalat for a short time. Direct assignment from Charleston AFB to there. Returned to CRB and worked Ammo dump a year and a half. Lived on Herky Hill and went to Airmans Club on base and NCO club on the hill. LOTS of hours there. Worked nights 7 to 7, 7 days a week and when it got hot....did it ever, we went to the NCO club for the remainder of the day. Maybe that's why my mind is so blank, but these pics sure bring back a LOT of memories. We had a duece a half and loaned it to the line from time to time to unload beaucoup body bags, won't forget that.

Let me hear from some of you that still have memories. Ron in Dalat, I think we've met!

I taught in the Air Freight School at Sheppard AFB for 2 1/2 years before they finally sent me to 'Nam. Started out working the Scales. Got lots of freebies working in the warehouse because of accidents. Had to steal a pathetic looking Christmas tree in 1970 and decorated it with labels and weight tags. Somebody ran over it with a forklift.
Worked in Expedite most of the time from 6 PM to 6 AM. Remember the ammo dump getting hit one night and causing lots of fireworks for a day or two.
Remember watching movies on the Hill after the screen got blown over in a typhoon. They showed the movies on the side of the chow hall on a corrugated metal wall.

Also, myself and comrade Billy Jackson were given Non-crewmember flight status aboard the C123's and C130's of the 315th Air Commando Sq there acting as assistant loadmasters on the flights around Vietnam. I contracted Malaria around Oct 66 - medevaced out in Nov 66 - to tachikawa Japan. 4.5 months hospitalization - reassigned to McChord Afb in Tacoma, sent to Parachute Packing School at Fort Lee Virginia - returned to Phouc Vinh north of Saigon in March 68 (What a place) Got out in March 69. Went to VCR from Sheppard AFB. Worked in Machine Room of Records & Reports with some great guys. Also worked off duty at Tape Center on Herky Hill. Served as Augmentee 1st six months in country. In 1996 I got in touch with Steve Hudgens who was in the class I went over with. We see each other every couple of years to relive the memories. Served remaining 2.5 years in Charleston, SC. Great memories from VCR. Would like to hear from anyone who was there at the time and might remember me. God Bless and thanks for a job well done.

Took off for Cam Ranh on New Year's Day 1971. Got to come home just a few days before Christmas. Lived "on the hill" on the west side of the base. Made some good friends that year. Most vivid memory is of the night/following morning when the ammo dump lit up like the 4th of July. Have a few pics of my year there, but not many. Would love to see more. I remember sand, sand & more sand. Always thought the place could make a beautiful resort area....absent annoying things like war.

Would like to get e-mail from anybody who served there during that time.

I was there when we lived in 10 man tents and the west ramp was being built by RMK. Initially worked on east ramp until west ramp was open to air traffic. We use to fleet all the the R&R aircraft on our time off; $50 for a Pan Am DC-6 & $90 for a 707. Sure made alot of $$ and was able to get all the left over food and fresh milk on the aircraft. Handled the first C-141 accident that crashed into bay on take-off.

Comments:
I had been trained as an Air Freight specialist and I assumed when I got there that I would be out on the flight line loading planes. I guess someone else decided I should be doing office work. I certainly wasn't going to complain.
They had me working nights in a little office under the operations section. My job was to count all the cargo and passengers that passed through Cam Rahn each day. That was both in country and out. In addition to that I had to answer the phone and do research concerning missing people or carge. Did certain people come and go and if so on what flight. Or more common "Were is my pallet, did it make a bird and if so which one?". That certainly wasn't the worse job anyone ever had over there. I'd be glad to hear from anyone that remembers me. Also, does anyone know where Larry Brown is now??? He was from Louisville, Kentucky. He was over there the same time I was and he worked in Expedite.

Great white sand there. We lived on the hill and had air condition. The hours were long and being young I can say that Cam Ranh Bay is where all my bad habits started. I have some pictures if anyone would like copies email me.

I drove a LARC V (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Craft). An aluminum boat with big tires. We hauled cargo from ships anchored in the bay to inland cargo dumps. Beautiful beaches. We also had detachments in Na Trang and Phan Thiet. Just hope someone from the ole company contacts me for old time sake.

Thank You, Ed Nelson

Your photos really moved me to tears remembering everything on the "hill" have many old slides not photos of the hill and the base. Can't remember many names of buddies believe you were there ahead of me. I'm going to keep searching google.com for more on Cam Rahn Bay which is how I turned up your site. Thanks for the visit. Now I've got to try and sleep tonight with old photos dancing in my head.

PS my hootch was the one across from the chapel. Boy do I remember it being cold in there!!!

Hi guys!

I'm the webmaster here and I hope that everyone enjoys what I've done here. I'd like to see this site become the gathering point for all 14th Aerial Port troops.

If anyone has any photos they'd like to share with us, drop me an e-mail and I'll tell you how to get the photos to me. Any photos sent to me will be returned in the same condition I receive them. I know how I would feel if somebody fouled up my photos.
