This is fascinating. My ancestors (MacEwen, McEwen, MacEwan, McEwan) came from Perthshire in 1820 to Eastern Ontario. My older relatives all pronounced our name just like this -- McCune. I always thought it was just a quirk of what is known as the "Ottawa Valley" accent. Now I suspect that that pronunciation comes from Scotland -- in your case, some county clerk heard McCune and spelled it just as he heard it. Actually, that old pronunciation sounds more like McYown, but very close.

Anyone out there have relatives from Perthshire, south of Lock Tay, near Crieff?

Glenn in Princeton, NJ

James Baker Alecock was the son of George Edward Alecock b. 1855 who immigrated to Sumner Township IL in 1875 with his father (and siblings) from Suffolk England. George Alecock senior was the brother of my great-great-grandmother Harriett Alecock. I have quite a few details on the early Alecock immigrants, and their Suffolk ancestors, if anyone is interested. Best wishes ... John

I know it is very time consuming to trace your family tree,my family did ours & it took 6 years to get back to the 12th. century. Will try to get what little info they have together & see where it leads.

Hi! I don't know if this is of interest to anyone here, but I have a large (oval - 22") silver or silverplated tray with the following inscribed in the center:

Presented to
W. S. McCune
IN RECOGNITION OF FIFTY YEARS ASSOCIATION WITH
THE WAGNER MANUFACTURING CO.
SIDNEY, OHIO
1898 - JANUARY - 1948

I am an antiques dealer and was trying to research this a bit when I came upon your site. Wagner, of course, is an old manufacturer of cast iron cookware located in Sidney, Ohio. Was just hoping to add to your genealogical information and maybe find out how it got out here in Western Washington. It was purchased by one of my buyers at a garage sale in Sequim, WA I believe.

I'm still looking for McCune's who may be connected to my family. Andrew McCune born approx 1797 in Fayette County, PA, most probably to Andrew McCune, he was father of John B. McCune, born in Kentucky (Maybe Jessimine County), he was the father of Walter Scott McCune born in Tenn (Memphis) about 1870. Anyone know any of the early ones in this line. Andrew was in Harrison County, Indiana in the 1820 Census along with his Father (I think). Please let me know.

Thanks,

My ancestor is Robert Greg McEwen who was married to Isabella Wooten. His father was Joseph McEwen married to Mary Bell. I was hoping to find more information on Joseph and Mary because I am making a trip to Ireland and Scotland this summer. I was in contact with someone from Ireland who said that most of the Bell families are from Northern Ireland, so it is very possible that Mary came from there. Do you have any records of when and where they may have immigrated into the US? I know that they were born, both Mary and Joseph in 1800 or 1801 if the 1850 census is correct on their ages. In looking under www.scotclans.com/clans/MacEwen/history.html It seems possible that McEwens may have come from the area of Loch Fyne in Argyll in about 1200. I am very new at searches, etc. but it would really be helpful to know which port they arrived at when they entered the US. Your site is lovely! Thanks for all the hard work you have put in. Ann

My grandmother was a McCune and I have been able to tract
back to her fathers father, but no further. My grandmother
was Arra Isabelle McCune, born in Memphis, Tenn 1906 and her father was Walter Scott McCune, born in Memphis , Tenn in approx 1873 and his father who was quite old when he had Walter was named John B. McCune (sometimes spelled it McCuen) he was born about 1818 in Kentucky, but live across the river in Indiana, in Harrison County right near the border of Kentucky (Louisville) and that is where the majority of his kids were born. He was a boat pilot.

The census of 1860 says that his parents were both from Kentucky.

If any leads or info please let me know.

Thanks

I have an old family history written by W.H. Hancock of Neoga, Ill on July 30, 1912. It state that James Hancock b. 21780 emigrated to Licking County Ohio in 1826 along with his wife Rebecca Lawson and a family consisting of seven sons: Isaac, James, William, Thomas, Wesley and Nathan and two daughters, Sallie and Rebecca. James younger brother George accompanied them. I believe that James's son Isaac is your ancestor. Let me hear from you. I will be glad to make you a copy of this manuscript.

What a nice site. I am the Family Historian for the McKune/Comfort Family. We are from Robert McKune, settled in Goshen, Orange Cty. NY and came from Scotland in 1754, according to original handwritten documents. We are sure that he spelled his name McEwen at one time also. He had 2 sons, Joseph & Robert, I descend from Joseph. Our McKune family also settled in PA, Susquehanna Cty. Also many went to Illinois, and Wisconsin. Imagine that!! When I looked down your surname list is was strange that so many of the surnames connected to your family are the same as our family! Also that so many of the given McKune names are the same. No wonder all the confusion at times!!.

My father, James Edward Beltz, was born in 1908 and
passed away in Orange, Texas in 1987. His father's name
was Edward Beltz--and his father's name was A.R. Beltz.
I have a copy of a letter written by A.R. written in 1907.
A.R. was born 10/2/1833 in Pennsylvania. In 1836 he moved with his father to Jefferson County, Ohio and lived there until 1854. They moved to Warren County, Iowa in 1854.
I believed Ole A.R. lived in Warren County the rest of his
life. He had several wives, and at least 9 children.

There is a huge blank from him to my daddy--and when I was
young and could talk to my Grandfather, I was "typical" and
didn't! Can you-or anyone else-fill in a little of this
"blank space"? Thanks, Dixie Steinberg
