" For example, the 1940 census had a housing schedule that asked the question; at which place did this person live five years ago, on April 1, 1935? to which was given a full street address, city and state. That tidy bit of genealogical evidence is now lost forever."
First, the housing schedule did NOT ask that question...it was asked on the regular population census.
Second, they did NOT ask for a full street address, just the name of the city if over 2,500 in population.
Third, that evidence is NOT lost forever, as it will be released in 2012 on the population schedules.

That will show you what was on the housing schedule. No question was asked there about residence 5 years previously. These schedules were probably not filmed and only summary data exists.

I hope you modify your information quickly, as these errors have a habit of becoming facts. It also doesn't do much to the reputation of your site to show incorrect information.

I am happy to find your site. I have recently started researching my husband's side. Because I can only trace mine back 3 generations. Any advice on finding Italian records? I had some guy in Scicily offer to find records at 30.00 a page, ?? a bit iffy so I declined.
I have been having fun collecting ancestors. It has made history more personal for my children. My husband who is an engineer has calculated that if you go back 9 generations you should have 2000+ ancestors!.. I am having fun finding them all. I would love to get as many pictures and stories about them as possible. That is one of my goals. As a way to preserve this heritage for my children.
I have been able to trace back 25 generations on hubby's side. We have discovered a Mayflower ancestor along with lots of other published history. Most of the data is of course secondary because of the internet. My new mission is to find primary documentation to support this info.

My computer crashed mid-May and finally was able to be back online Sept 1,2001. I am still looking for the children of my father's 2nd marriage. Married Thelma Irene Hicks in Rapid City SD 1932. Daughter born May 1932 died a week later. They were married by Ensign Yarley of the Salvation Army. In 1936/37 there were two children approximately 3 years and the other a baby of 3 or 4 months of age. No gender or names known.

I am seeking Margaret Peach WATHEN, born 1.7.1854 in Staffordshire, England daughter of James Bateman WATHEN & Esther VENABLES. Her brother Ernest WATHEN emigrated from Staffordshire in 1879 & settled in New York. His widowed mother Esther & 3 sisters (Maud, Lucy & Mabel WATHEN) joined him in 1889/90 (New York Censuses), but can't find a record of Margaret doing so.
Despite this, she is believed to have opened a school(family letters) & the family rumour is that it was in Martha's Vineyard.
Would some kind person be able to help me track this down please?
