I was browsing--trying to find info for a distant cousin whose grandmother is buried (according to FamilySearch.com) at Wills Point. The name is Bessie Pearl Hodge. I believe I found her husband, Pearl Hodge, on your site. Seems that an "s" might have been added and that always makes the searching more difficult. She may already have this info but I was excited to find it. This is a wonderful site. You all have put a great deal of time and effort into it. I don't even have folks there but it didn't keep me from checking the old pictures, etc. Bessie Pearl Triplett Hodge is daughter of my great uncle, George Washington Triplett. His father, J.E.M. Triplett, is my gr gr grandfather and he founded the town of Triplett, Mo. where I was born. That would be my connection to your site which is very roundabout. Thanks for a great and interesting site. I will be back to look more.

The last time at the guest book I had an inquiry about a relative. This time I will give more info. Thomas Jefferson Durham was my great grandfather(my mother's mother's father). Elizabeth Durham was his mother. She was a Green before she remarried. She was married to Joseph Green when she moved from Tennessee. She had a daughter who was born on the way. Her name was Kate or Katherine. Kate had a brother - I am not sure of his name. Joseph died of illness during the Civil War. Elizabeth was supposed to be 1/4 or 1/2 Indian. We do not know what the tribe was. If we could find proof that Thomas Jefferson Durham was born to Elizabeth Green it would be helpful. Also we would like to find proof of Elizabeth's heritage. Was she Native American. If so what tribe was she from and to what amount was she. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hello,
I am researching the surname of Ferguson or Furgurson for a patron from Oklahoma.
According to the patron, John Frank Spelled the surname Furgurson, however, was the only relative that spelled the name differently.
Thank you for this wonderful site, will continue my search.

Very nice website. I am looking for information on my great grandfather Elise Andrew B. Yarbrough. He was a Methodist Circuit minister. He died in Van Zant County February 10, 1891. His wife was Mary Adline Yarbrough. She died in Van Zant County January 27, 1890. I would like to know if there is information on where they might be buried. I found information in the Clayton Library in Houston in the Van Zant County School Census 1890-1891 that the children were enrolled in School #50. After the death of my great grandfather the children were placed in the Buckner Orphanage Home. If anyone has information that can help me I will appreciate it. If there is a book in your library that has this information please let me know. I do plan a trip to Canton in the near future.
Thanks for any information.

Hello, I am an Oklahoma author with a historical fiction being the latest. It is real history glued together with fiction to connect the dots about my great great grandmother. It took me 18 years to research and write this in such a way that this lost cultual diversity could be more readily available to a larger audience. I thought if you had those searching for roots and have hit a blank wall, it is possible that they too may have this type background, Native American/Melungeon who happen to be shantyboat people, an almost impossible group to trace. Here is a recent review. This book will be entered into the Texas State Genealogical Soc. Book Award Contest and the one entered will have an index. Only this one will be indexed for this entry but the entering of it will guarantee this history to go to the state archives. Tonya Holmes Shook shookum@pldi.net

THE DRIFTERS: A CHRISTIAN HISTORICAL NOVEL OF THE MELUNGEON SHANTY BOAT PEOPLE
Tonya Holmes Shook, Marquette Books, 2005, $19.95, pb, 311pp, 092299319X
This novel takes place in America, beginning around the 1830s and ending after the Civil War. The characters, Melungeon shanty boat people, are a biracial mix of Cherokee and Caucasian bloodlines. Their story is told through the viewpoint of the main character, Harriet Holmes. Created by the author around known portions of the author’s family history, the novel is a fictionalized biography of Harriet’s life. Photographs of Holmes family members, including Harriet, appear throughout. The book opens with Harriet pregnant, fifteen-years-old, and newly married to shanty boat dweller Canady Holmes. Through Harriet’s experiences, the reader learns of societal wrongs suffered by the clannish Melungeon people, who must hide from Indian removal. The Holmes family barely scratches out a living as they travel along the rivers of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. The tension created by this family’s struggle for survival and the hardships they endure during and after the Civil War carries the story.
The author does not spare her characters from brutalities in this riveting tale. Indeed, if a flaw in this tale could be found, it may be that the reader must suspend belief to accept that so much tragedy could happen to one family and that the mother of that family could come through it all with self and sensibilities intact. Readers will be curious to learn how brushes with Christians along the way help Harriet to have hope for the future of her family.
This novel will elicit every emotion from a reader, as it is a love story as well as an account of suffering. The author’s fine storytelling, coupled with believable and endearing characters, presents an unforgettable tale. This fast-paced, dramatic narrative will draw those interested in Native American history, and will also most certainly provide enjoyable reading for a wider audience.
Judith Carroll
Aulena Scearce Gibson, columnist for the Lawton Constitution's "Tree Tracers", reviewed the novel November 2004, with these words: "a wonderful novel- comparable to Alex Haley's, Roots."

Knowledge of this cultural diversity will more than likely be lost with my generation.

Both my mother and father's family history goes back a long way here in Van Zandt County.

Mother was a "Nations", Relman being her father who was a barber in Grand Saline for 40 years. Erlene "Null" Nations. I somehow was fortunate enough to end up with ALOT of old photographs taken here in VZ County. Both my grandmother and grandfather were raised in the Sand Flat community near Sand Flat Baptist Church.

My father was John Wayne "Strickland", son of Malcolm and Merlene "Casey" Strickland. The Stricklands and the Caseys were raised in the Wentworth and/or Oakland area.

I had inquired about where the Rodgers Cemetary was and received an email back with a link to your website.

In any case, one of the birth certificate states that she was born in France on 5/9/1952, daughter of Reginald Settles born in Canton, TX on 11/1/1926 and Fernande Maria Letellier, born in Paris on 3/28/1929. The parents could not take care of her, she ended at the "Assistance Publique" with somehow another birth certificate (same day, 2 year younger). This is a long story, today, her interest is only to find out whether her father still live and if there is some family in Canton.
I look forward to hearing from you,

Eric Anthonissen

It was through this web site that I made a connection with a cousin I, otherwise, would have never met.

What a great site! My grandfather was Samuel Judson Sides, born in Martin's Mill in 1875, and his father was William Pittman Sides (see the Confederate veterans' link for his obituary), who came to Martin's Mill from Walker County Alabama in 1850 at the age of nine. Any information about the Sides family (and I know that there are a lot of them out there) would be appreciated. Throughout my childhood and teen years, My parents and I spent each first Monday in May at the Holly Springs Cemetery Homecoming. It has been a long time now since I have been to one, but I hope to make it back this year. Dallas is not that far from Van Zandt County. Keep up the superb work on the website!

My great-great-grandfather was a Robert Frank Kellam who was born about 1825 in Georgia, moved with his family some time around 1840 to what was then Rusk County (later to become Van Zandt County), and left in 1848 for Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas, where he settled and met and married my great-great-grandmother. I have located a copy of his journal from 1849, previously published by the Arkansas historical society, detailing a trip back to Texas to visit his family in the summer of 1849. I believe that his father was Henry Kellam, born in Georgia about 1800, and that one or more of his siblings stayed in Van Zandt County.

Dear Ladies:
I write an article on adjustable wrenches for every issue of the Fine Tool Journal, a quarterly publication catering to the collectors of antique tools. On April 7th/1914 a patent for a remarkable quick adjust wrench was issued to Messrs. Ira Cunningham and Haywood Flowers of Grand Saline. I have two interesting examples of this wrench and would like to do an article covering this subject. It would add great interest to the article if I could inform the readers a bit about Cunningham and Flowers. I would be very pleased to receive any information you could provide about the above persons. This would be about their occupation, where they worked and their standing in the community or anything else remarkable about them. Their birth and death dates would also be of interest. I look forward with great hope and anticipation that you could
provide me with some information. You would of course receive a copy of the issue in which the article appears. Thanks very much for your attention
Regards, Herb Page, (Mr. Oldwrench)

Bill SB 174 - Filed by Jane Nelson, District 12 Grapevine, TX makes it impossible to be able to access information on marriage records to the public including genealogists and family historians. Bills SB861/HB1778 seek to make birth records remain closed for 75 years. Currently they are closed for 50 years. This makes it increasingly difficult, and for some impossible to research their lineage and family history. DD214 legislation is also being passed in a futile attempt to stop identity theft. There is a petition online but if you would rather develop your own, that is fine, too. The link to it is www.petition-them.com ,then click on human rights tab. Please help us to stop the government from taking away access to our heritage. We would appreciate you signing the petition and/or contacting your state Representatives and Senators regarding this issue or any other help. Thank you for your support.

Respectfully,
Rosanna Urban Parra

I have recently found out that my Grandfather George Clough Cooper is buried in the Prairie Springs Cemetery dates are 1891-1924. 1924 is the year we knew he died in Ben Wheeler, Tx, he was hit by a train or was in a train accident there. I'm not sure of the story, but I know at that time my Grandmother, Ethel Virginia Cook and my father John Edward Cooper were living in Tyler, Tx. All I'm looking for is, if George Clough Cooper's parents names are on any documents at the cemetery or at least his birth place. Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. My husband found a wide angle picture in a cardboard tube, we thought it was a class picture. We un rolled the picture and found it to be an old wide angle picture of downtown Grand Saline. We beleive the picture was taken in the 1800's. It was taken in the horse and buggy time. I was wondering if anyone knows of a such picture becouse the picture I have is a copy of the original. Im thinking there may be an original hanging on a wall some place down town. If know one knows of such picture, then the pictue I have will be very valuble to the City of Grand Saline.
Sombody please get back with me and let me know what you think. I live in Irving Texas and my phone number is 972-438-3773 or you can e-mail. thx kay maurer

I am researching Confederate soldier Thomas Jackson CRABB who died in VanZandt County 1902. He was a son of Burton Crabb & Rachel [Jones] who married 27 Jan 1813 Columbia County, Georgia. Thomas was one of 11 children.
From the 1870, 1880 census I know he had chn Martha L; Thomas A (died VZ Co); William A (died VZ Co); and Irena V.
He was married twice but I do not know the name of his 1st wife and all I know of his 2nd wife is her given name was Nancy.

I enjoyed the site very much. I am searching for information on the A.D. Miller family and descendants. They were from Wills Point. A.D. was married to Mary Loggins? Some of their children were: Mary, A.B., Elizabeth, Coleman, William. Mary married a William Wilson when A.D. died. Coleman moved in with the Massengill family. One of his daughters Polly Miller later married a Massengill. I think some of them still live in that area.

If possible I have a question of him:

I am related to the Foster's through Elizabeth Foster b 1703 and through her son Reuben Golding b 1751 and his daughter Nancy Ann b 1785 and her daughter Sarah H. Golding b 1816 who married John Brown son of John G. Brown and Elizabeth Kent.

John and Sarah would be my 2ed great grandparents.

I am trying to pinpoint Sarah H. Brown's death location

Note of appreciation to the fine staff of Coordinators and Volunteers for the Library of Genealogy and Local History of Van Zandt County:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two of my first cousins and I visited your Library of Genealogy and Local History for Van Zandt County and were extremely impressed with the data available and the willingness and gracious attitude of each volunteer there helping us the entire time we were there. I was amazed at the vast amount of resources available!
We were SO fortunate to have had Shirley volunteering today. She stayed past her scheduled time to leave (12:30) assisting one of the many searches we pursued, as well as coordinating and guiding all of us present today in this mammoth undertaking--a search of "Smith" info. Bill, another volunteer, was also such an asset in searching through other sources and locating valuable information. Roy assisted us with the LDS census index searches and Mabel worked diligently right along with us after Shirley left.
Again, our trip to Canton was solely to visit your library for genealogical research, and we were delighted and thrilled with the findings, and especially with the wonderful people you have as volunteers representing your Library of Genealogy and Local History. It was a most rewarding trip for each of us--from Birmingham, AL; DeSoto, TX; and Arlington, TX--in more ways than one.
Your website definitely deserves many awards for the organization and presentation of outstanding resource material available at your library and the appealing manner in which it is presented.
With Sincere Appreciation,
Paula Scott
I appreciate your efforts to preserve and share data for VZ Co. families. It seems that almost every branch of my mother's family tree (Simpson, Stepp, Batts, Horton)wound up in VZ Co. As to querries, I am trying to discover the parents of Ella Caroline Batts Simpson, wife of Robert W. Simpson. She was born abt. 1861 in AL (appears to have been orphaned by 1870), and was already married by the time she moved to VZ Co. However, there were other Batts in VZ who were related to her, so I am hoping to trace her through her connection to them.
I believe Laura's family came from either Alabama or Georgia in just before Civil War [Thomas either died on trip or just after]. John, her brother went back to fight with home regiment in Civil War.
Morrisons: Claybourn [different spellings in everything] had two brothers, John and Thomas Preston. Can't find anything about where his family came from or anything. These three brothers "just showed up" in Hood Co.
Carmichaels: Eva Era [wife of Van Poe Morrison]. Father named John and I believe married Rebecca Jones [not sure about her name]. Both are buried in Acton Cemetery near Granbury, TX. Hood County. Grandfather of Eva, Archibald {Colonel or Major}[was in charge of protecting Hood Co. residents from Indians during Civil War. Supposedly quite a character. Really frustrated because he couldn't go fight the Yankees. Rebecca may have been his wife!??! Given names passed down in Carmichael family: Pomeroy, Archibald, John, James, Duncan, Neil, Isabelle, Isabella, Jane or Jean.
Davises: Maud(e) Ann Davis married Grover Cleveland Oxford. No info on her family except her mother was Roxanne and younger sister named Wanda [who currently lives in or near Coleman, TX].
Oxfords: Grover Cleveland born somewhere near or around Stephenville, TX. Father a doctor. Mother named Nancy Melissa or Nancy Melinda. Had several brother and uncles in area. Several Oxfords became Judges and Lawyers -- these were uncles and cousins. One was judge in Palo Pinto County for several years. Really don't know much about Oxfords either.
If this is more than you want to deal with, that's fine.
Thanks,
Nelda Brown
Thank you for your site!
I have distant McIntyre kinswomen who left Mississippi sometime after the 1860 federal census and before the 1880 one and turned up in Van Zandt Co. in 1880. One, Margaret C. McIntyre, is buried in Van Zandt Co. I've no idea who they went to join - but it's unlikely that the three women would have headed out to Texas without so much as a kin or former neighbours to join.
Best regards,
He married Amanda Lou Sims, my grandmother, in 1896. Their daughter, Georgia Inez Clifford (Shipp), was my mother. Wonderful site! I especially like the old photos and stories of various communities. I may have some photos also, will have to get them scanned.
My dad Luther Matthew Baker, was born in 1922 south of Wills Point, and grew up in a house on the Blankenship farm. My grandfather, Martin Luther Baker, was born in Kaufman County but lived in Van Zandt. He was a sharecropper for Mr. Blakenship, and also worked the press at the cotton gin. He was a member of the Cana Baptist Church for many years, and then at First Baptist Wills Point until he died in 1978, at about 94 years. My grandmother, Nora Diora Ezell Baker, was born in Alabama but came to Texas as a child. My aunt, Willie Gene Baker taught school in Watkins and Wills Point. I have other relatives in the area who are Leatherwoods, Rowdens, Everetts, & Ezell.
Keep up the grand work!
Dear Sibyl Creasey,
I just spoke to Patsy on the phone regarding obituaries of my grandparents, David Thomas and Addie Ella Needham. Davids Death Certificate indicated he died October 27, 1922 and Addie Ella passed away Oct. 27, 1945. She did passaway in Mexia at her sisters home. Since she was a resident of Wills Point I hope there is something on her in your newspaper. I was eight when my mother Ruby Needham passed away, therefore my information has come from other people. I did phone the school district to see if they show that Ruby attended or graduated during the period of about 1919 to 1923. Let me know what I need to send you. Thanks so much for your help. Thank you for putting so much information on the internet so we can search from a distance.
I was disappointed in that my great-grandparents were not listed in the Union Grove Cemetery information, especially since they have a very big headstone. They are CHRIS L. SMITH (1850-1918) and SARAH V. ANDERSON SMITH (stone says 1850, but should be 1859-1918). Next to them is a small stone that says G.C. SMITH, who was their son. His name was either Grover or Gibbard and I have almost no information on him. Their daughter VALREE SMITH CROW is buried next to them but without a headstone. She died in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
My great-grandfather Warren was an engineer-maybe a city engineer or county engineer in the 1930's or 1940's. The Slaughters have been in Van Zandt county for generations, but I would like to know where they came from (I believe W.W. Slaughter was one of the first, I think he was a minister or something). My daughter and I have done limited research in your genealogical room when I lived in Tyler. I had hoped to do more research once I retired but I moved to Maryland and cannot do it in person.
While there we found newspaper articles and records of my father's side of the family but did not have time to check out my mother's side of the family. Since I am now retired, I am hopeful I can complete my search for ancestors.
Please send me the process for finding Van Zandt County information about my family. My father was Mordie Love Sides and my mother was Willie Albert Everett Sides.
I will appreciate hearing from you.
I was born and raised in Terrell, graduating from THS in 1957. I'm fortunate to have many memories of the Wills Point area. My great uncle, Claude Perry, was born in VZ County, was a life long bachelor and itinerate carpenter who returned to the area and had a woodworking shop just North of the Wills Point Square in the 1950's. He died in Wills Point in the early '60's I believe and was around 90.
His brother, Abe Perry, was also a roaming bachelor and he died near Ables Springs in Kaufman County when he was also past 90 years of age. My Father Roy G Breckenridge was born in Cobb Switch in 1906 and my Mother Jayne Ruth Thompson Breckenridge was born in 1913 in Elmo. I'm so proud of Texas heritage. I have no children.
Greetings! My family name, Cole, goes back to the Civil War era in Canton, when they migrated to Van Zandt from Alabama, and before that from Georgia and the Carolinas before that. My wife Janet and I hope to move onto our small place about 2 miles west of Canton, when we retire.
My Dad was Herman L. Cole, b. 1903 in Van Zandt County, son of Daniel Franklin Cole (b. Alabama), who was the son of Joel G. Cole (buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery), who was the son of Noel Cole (buried in Carter Cemetery), whose father was John Cole in North Carolina in 1756.
I was born in Sacramento, CA, the last of 8 children of Herman Cole and Lena M. Snow. We all heard much about Van Zandt while growing up in several western states. I got to Texas at age 17 (57 now) and in 1975 I bought 15 acres of my mother's place west of Canton. I go there every chance I get. We have lived in Mesquite for 35 years. So long for now. I am going to look at some more sites about Van Zandt.
This is a fantastic website for genealogy. I love browsing through it.
My great-grandparents were WILLIAM M MAXFIELD m. KESIAH J HICKS and DAVID DELANO LYBRAND m. MARY ELIZABETH JEFFERIES. Both families and many descendants are buried in Marvin Chapel cemetery near Van.
William M Maxfield came to Texas about 1837 and settled in Smith Co near Mount Sylvan. He was in Muckelroy's Company as a bugler in the Mexican War. David D Lybrand came to Texas in 1850, settleing next door to the Maxfields in Smith County. Both families later moved to Van Zandt County near Van.
My grandparents were Asbury Ginn Maxfield m. Alice Lee Lybrand. A.G.(Doc) Maxfield owned the first durgstore in Van and was also a minister. They are also buried in Marvin Chapel cemetery.
Researching the MAXFIELD, LYBRAND and all affiliated families.
Keep up the good work! Gene
We recently visited the library in the court house annex and were delighted by the helpful volunteers and others who aided us in searching out information on my family. With their assistance we were able to locate the land owned by my family in the 1860s and probate documents on my great, great, great, grandfather. We still hope to gather more information.
Good morning. B. Miller suggested that I write you. I am related to J.W. Barrier (gr grandfather) I have chased down most of the family with the exception of two ladies. Grampa Will married M.S. Smith on 23 Feb 1881(b. 24 Nov 1857 in La and died 10 Mar 1894) . Apparently she died and Will married Mrs. S.E. Downing on 18 Apr 1895(b. 6 May 1859 and died 25 Jan 1945).I don't know which Downing she married earlier. I need the names of the parents of both women, birth certificate info and death certificate info if you have it.
Gr-Gr grandfather Cyrus Barrier married Zenovia Ingram on 24 Sep 1849 in Wayne Co., Ky. I find no record of her death. If you have anything on her I would appreciate it.
Thank you for your help. Ray Le Pere
