Who are you looking for? Winstein & Dunlap
Comments:
Hi Terry.
I enjoyed seeing my dad's old photos on the website and hope other families see relatives in the team pictures. Just wanted to point out one typo in the photo of my dad and his brother: William Joseph and Howard Brown Winstein. The last name is misspelled. Dad was descended from Henri Windstein (born 1809) whose "d" was lost in his naturalization papers. The family has spelled it Winstein since then. The caption under the photo says "Weinstein." Thanks for posting the photos.

Who are you looking for? a research for an ancestor
Where did they live in the Carnegie area? Collier area
What are their surnames? Ernest Bisi
Comments:
Hello,
I write you from Italy because I need an help.
An ancestor of mine, Mr. Ernesto Bisi, in 1896 built a macaroni factory in Collier (Ewingsville), Carnegie. The plant that was very close to the Panhandle Railroad was called "United States Macaroni Factory". In 1907, at the age of 48 year, my ancestor died and the bussines of the pasta passed to the management of the wife Emilia Bisi (Biagiotti). I don’t know if the Bisi family kept the plant open until 1917ca. but I found that in that year Mr. Salvatore Viviani and his brothers bought the plant and the house of my ancestor to found the VIMCO empire. I found a story of Rev. Milton M. Allison pastor of the Coalbrook Presbyterian Church, Neffs, Ohio, written in an article of the writer Jean Walker and published in July 26, 2000. In this article (almost at the end) a little story of Bisi and Viviano (VIMCO) is described. I had been able to find the indenture where my ancestor bought the ground for 2500 USD the 28th September 1895, from Mr. James Wing, but it is not easy to understand where the ground was situated. I’d like to know how the Bisi Macaroni Factory ended...and some information about my ancestor.

Can you help me?

Sincerely

Luciano Garbi (from Italy)

Comments:
Hello,
I'm looking for some more information about my ancestor Ernest Bisi who first founded in 1896 the United States Macaroni Factory (near railroad)in Collier,Carnegie. I know that he bought the land in 1895 for the construcrion of the factory from Mr. James A. Ewing for 2500 USD...
I also discovered that in 1917 ca. the factory was bought by Viviano Family (VIMCO). Does not exist the VIMCO building yet? I'd like very much to see where my ancestor Bisi early factory was located.
Sorry for the trouble and thanks for your cooperation.

Sincerely

Where did they live in the Carnegie area? Mansfield, PA
What are their surnames? Shaffer, Blake, Hallas
Comments:
I discovered tonight (on a rootsweb Allegheny deaths site which referenced your historical society)that William J. Shaffer was killed in Washington. We have his wife Alice Shaffer's bible in which she shows her address as Mansfield, PA. William was her second husband. Her daughter Annie J. Blake sometimes used Shaffer as her name. Annie dropped the Shaffer later. Annie J. Shaffer married William J. Hallas. I have been having trouble finding info about William except for his death date (from a funeral card I have which was printed in Cumberland, OH). I suspect he met Alice in Illinois or Missouri, then they moved East perhaps because he was from the area originally or because of work. If you can provide any assistance I would be greatful.

His spouse was Susanna, died in 1981. Louis was italian, maybe the name on the tombstone can be Louis, or Louis Jim or Louis Vince.

My message is for the families of the buried at the Chartiers Cemetery. The Cemetery has posted signs on the clean up at the cemetery. This year the clean up has included Eternal Lights and again Military Markers (the ones that hold the flags). I have contacted the American Legion Post 82 out of Carnegie PA Commander Charles Magnus. And I have also paid a visit to the Cemetery myself. I was advised that both must be removed in the winter to prevent anyone getting hurt. I was showed a list of new rules, which they claim was adopted by the New Owners, StoneMor Partners, L.P. (Cornerstone Family ???) I have collected as much as possible of these items. Anyone wishing to claim these back may contact me at my email address. I sure do wish I could get these people to leave our loved one alone.

On a land issue for timber culture act. Erastus was listed as living in Chartiers in 1888. In 1904 the land issue was cancelled. He had a brother John and Augustus Homer who is my great grandfather. From other sources he was to have followed an oil company to Texas. Which one that would be I don't know. Any information would be great... thank you!

THE DRIFTERS: A CHRISTIAN HISTORICAL NOVEL OF THE MELUNGEON SHANTY BOAT PEOPLE
Tonya Holmes Shook, Marquette Books, 2005, $19.95, pb, 311pp, 092299319X
This novel takes place in America, beginning around the 1830s and ending after the Civil War. The characters, Melungeon shanty boat people, are a biracial mix of Cherokee and Caucasian bloodlines. Their story is told through the viewpoint of the main character, Harriet Holmes. Created by the author around known portions of the author’s family history, the novel is a fictionalized biography of Harriet’s life. Photographs of Holmes family members, including Harriet, appear throughout. The book opens with Harriet pregnant, fifteen-years-old, and newly married to shanty boat dweller Canady Holmes. Through Harriet’s experiences, the reader learns of societal wrongs suffered by the clannish Melungeon people, who must hide from Indian removal. The Holmes family barely scratches out a living as they travel along the rivers of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. The tension created by this family’s struggle for survival and the hardships they endure during and after the Civil War carries the story.
The author does not spare her characters from brutalities in this riveting tale. Indeed, if a flaw in this tale could be found, it may be that the reader must suspend belief to accept that so much tragedy could happen to one family and that the mother of that family could come through it all with self and sensibilities intact. Readers will be curious to learn how brushes with Christians along the way help Harriet to have hope for the future of her family.
This novel will elicit every emotion from a reader, as it is a love story as well as an account of suffering. The author’s fine storytelling, coupled with believable and endearing characters, presents an unforgettable tale. This fast-paced, dramatic narrative will draw those interested in Native American history, and will also most certainly provide enjoyable reading for a wider audience.
Judith Carroll

Aulena Scearce Gibson, columnist for the Lawton Constitution's "Tree Tracers", reviewed the novel with these words: "a wonderful novel- comparable to Alex Haley's, Roots."

Preface

Before the settlement of Jamestown there lived a people in America who built houses and had a complex social order, but history books have little record of them. They trace their ancestry to Portugal, Spain, North Africa, Turkey and Greece and to Native Americans, with whom they intermingled. According to old Mediterranean Library records, their countrymen were taken as slaves of the Vikings seeking to colonize the new world. But they eventually were abandoned, left to survive as best they could in a foreign land. As the generations passed, these people acquired certain physical and cultural characteristics that distinguished them from European ancestors. They were called Melungeons.

Dr. N. Brent Kennedy, author of The Melungeons, The Resurrection of a Proud People: An Untold Story of Ethnic Cleansing in America, has researched the genetic and cultural peculiarities known to this people. Like African American slaves and Native American peoples, the Melungeons were treated unfairly by the European settlers, who forced them off their land. They were tagged as “free people of colorö and at one time were prohibited from owning land, attending school, and marrying outside of their “own kindö except in Kentucky.

The ill treatment of the Melungeon people helped create a distinctive and clannish folk that had low self-esteem and peculiar ways. A mixture of Mediterranean and Indian blood, they were a developing race who clung to their own tried and proven traditions, who trusted no one outside of family and married among themselves.

This novel tells the story of one Melungeon family. It is based on word of mouth stories from descendants of Harriett Riddle Holmes, my great-great grandmother who began her married life on a houseboat during the same year as the Trail of Tears. She survived through dire times of the Civil War, experienced heartaches relating to her sons William and Jasper, and relocated to Texas after the war where some of her sons participated in cattle drives.

This story begins in the southeastern Cumberland area of Kentucky in l837. Harriett Holmes was a real person, but one with no history, or none that is readily traced, a phenomenon common to the lineage of the Melungeon people. Many tried to assimilate into the dominant society, but the rejection caused them to be more clannish than ever. Harriett had few friends outside of the kinship clan. This social isolation contributed to a development of a unique culture, one that the reader will vicariously explore in this book.

This book is basically a fictionalized biography. Her name, children’s names, and story line are factual, but the glue cementing accounts together comes from my imagination. I hope the reader finds this book enjoyable and educational.

Comments:
i'm looking for the family of Hugh Grove. His first wife had died, when he met and married my grandmother, Ida Frances Jenkins Campbell. My mother, was Very Jane Campbell and her own brother was Bernard. she always spoke of her two stepbrothers with much affection. I believe one was named Kenny and one was Huck, Buck or something in that nature. Grandpa Hugh died before my parents were married, but my mother adored him and always spoke of him kindly. Hugh is buried with his first wife, I think her name was Marie.

Comments:
After the marriage of James Pollock and my aunt, Mary Baumiller, they moved to Scotland for ten years before returning to Mansfield Boro in 1880. On the Scottish birth records for the eldest four children, it says that James and Mary were married in "Coal Hill, Mansfield Boro, Allegheny, County, Pennsylvania." After they moved back in 1880 they lived in a section of the city called Red Row. I have a picture of the house in which they lived. I suspect that James and Mary had a civil marriage as Mary was German Evangelical and James was Scottish. Since Masfield boro wasn't incorporated until 1872, would it be correct to assume that they were married in Carnegie. I haven't seen any mention of a lost town called "coal hill" either. Been looking for this info for fifteen years. any help would be appreciated

So in regards to who I am looking for? Here are the names pertaining to Anna Eliza Phillips:
Phillips
Heberle
Guthrie
Dowling/Douling
Parks

Also, any Bibey that might be related. Anna Eliza Phillips and Elijah Phillips were the parents of my Grandmother Anna May Phillips/Bibey, she married Alfred Bibey. They were both born in Carnegie/Pittsburgh area.

Anyone, that might be researching any of these names, please contact me. I would very much appreciate it.

Who are you looking for? Genealogy Web Page Update 04/20/04
Comments:
This afternoon (20 April 2004) I posted a comprehensive and complete update to my HILTON genealogy Web site. Additions also may have been made for other surnames, including FRANKS, KRUG, LAUDERBACH, SCHADE, STRANGE, SUMMERSCALES, and WERLE, among many others.

Thanks especially to Jack Worgan, who provided tips that led to my discovering several new generations in England.

Please see http://www.hiltonpond.org/GenealogyMain.html

Let me know if you have information beyond what I've collected. :-)

Best wishes,

BILL

Living in California, I miss connections to the town most of my family lived in or near. My dad, Jim Chappell, was a police officer, and is buried in the Veterans section of Chartier's Cemetery. There's always been a dispute as to how our surname is spelled...I use the double "l" as did my father who died in March 1950.

Who are you looking for? Great Grandmother
What are their surnames? Douling
Comments:
Anna Eliza Douling married Elijah Phillips. "Annie" was born 1846 either in Pennsylvania, Virginai or West Virginia, she posted all three on three different census. She was last listed in the 1910 census living with her step-daughter Maude PHILLIPS/HEBERLE. "annie" died somewhere and is buried somewhere, I just don't know where. Maude and her husband are buried in Chartiers cem. They were last living in Midway, Leslie sent me obits for both, no mention of Annie but one son Charles E/Elmer who worked for the railroad and a Margaret GUTHRIE (maiden name?) who the Heberle's raised from childhood.
I would appreciate anyone who knew this family or are related to please contact me. I really want to continue on with this line and can not until I find out "Annie's" parents and where she was born. Thanks.

Just a brief correction. The GREAT Terry asked if one of the names that I have as McDino could be McDine. Yes, after looking over the signature that is what it is. My previous post may still have other spelling errors. I left off some names that I just can't decipher. I will attempt to try my best to list them here but be aware I may be close but not accurate.

If I can get the old scanner going I will try to scan the images in and if they come out good I will post them on our web site. I will provide a direct link later if it works out okay.

I am going to post this to the Carnegie Rootsweb list also, just in case some people aren't subscribed or just happen by this great site. My grandmother Sophia Kinney maiden Wentzel passed away in 1953, anyone find an obit for this, Terry? I found out that a William Zethner may be related, a cousin of my dad's. I don't know what side of the family though, Kinney or Wentzel. Here is what I gleaned from my grandmother's funeral book. I don't know any of the entries, maybe someone knows? If you do I would surely love to have correspondence with them or their relatives.

Comments:
These people are getting away with neglect, accountability, and respect for the dead. People really trust cemetery owners to keep their grave sites and general grounds in good condition in reverence of the sacred deceased and in honor of the people who pay a handsome price for services. I have stopped by to discuss my concerns with Tom and Karen Kerr of 742 Nobelstown Rd. just across the street from this garbage dump. I have documentation, several pictures, witnesses, dates, times, informal and formal communications with the Chartiers staff and will be exposing all of this to the Pennsylvania State Complaint Hotline, local media and others as I deem necessary to obtain satisfaction if my demands are not met. My demands are that my parents' memorial be correctly set in a footer and in a stable condition as I was promised at the time of their death. In addition, I just paid and received a deed for two burial plots next to my parents' location. I want a total refund of my money for the two plots. My Interment Deed No. is 4173 and cost $1,720.00. I do not want to be buried in this garbage dump.

Thanks to you all at Historical Society of Carnegie, I found out Grandfather Conley's first name by finding his wife's Death Notice in a 1925 Carnegie Signal Item. The city directories are on microfilm at the Carnegie Library in Oakland and are a wonderful resource for ancestors you can't find in the census records.

What are their surnames? Phillips
Comments:
In 1910 Anna E. Phillips was living with Frank C. HABARLE in Carnegie. This information given in census.
Frank C. Habarle age 42, birth place Wisconsin Head of household. Other residents: Maud J. age 40, b. Pa.,wife
Charles E. age 21, b. Pa, son
Margaret J. 12,b.Pa,adopt. daug.
Anna E. PHILLIPS age 63, b. West
Virginia, mother-in-law.
Anna Eliza Phillips nee: Douling was the second wife to Elijah Phillips. Maud J. was his daughter from his first marriage, hence the mother-in-law. Annie as she is refered to in most of the census has placed her birth state as Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, however for some unknown reason we feel West Virginia is the place. However, we can't find further information. I have queries on message boards in all three states besides the Carnegie one and this site. We would hope someone knows of the HABARLE,PHILLIPS OR DOULING families and if so please contact me. Even if someone knows when she died and where, we can at least send for her death certificate and hopefully get her parents names and where she as well as they came from. Please someone help!

Who are you looking for? relatives
Where did they live in the Carnegie area? various
What are their surnames? Bibey, Aston, Phillips, Douling, Black
Comments:
If anyone knows someone with a connection to any of these surnames, I would appreciate letting me know. In particular (Garfield) James Aston and his wife Ella Louise. They lived with John and Lois Bibey in the 1920's and later moved to California. He worked for the railroad. We know quite a bit about Garfield James but Ella Louise is still a mystery. On her death certificate (Garfield James) information given as to her parents - father John Bybee, England - mother unknown. John and Lois Bibey supposedly had a daughater named Ella but we can't make the connection at this time.
Anna Eliza Phillips (my great grandmother, maternal) maiden name was Douling, we have not been able to find any further information on her or her parents.
Hope someone can help, I know there were children and marriages occured and surnames changed, so if you have relatives from the past that had these names I hope you will contact me.

Comments:
Does anyone remember my great grandfather, George Richard Hilton?

For many years in the early 1900s he sold heating and lamp oil from a wagon in Carnegie and Heidelberg. After retiring, he served as janitor of Heidelberg School, where he encouraged students--and gave them music lessons--to be involved in the community band that he led.

He died in 1940, before I was born. I have seen only one photo of him and thought someone out there must have a record of him--perhaps an old school yearbook, newspaper clipping, business photo, etc.

Thanks in advance,

BILL

I have in the guestbook all of these names at least once many more than that. Terry, wants to have a mailing list and I think its a good idea. I belong to several lists from England and I read every e-mail that comes through. As you go, though, the subject is a clue to if you want to read a particular one if you are in a hurry or if you've been gone for awhile and have hundreds of mail. So that is the one thing I would advise people to do, be sure you write a surname you are looking for and always in CAPS.
I think its a good idea.

>>They were Catholic any ideas what cemetery they may be buried at?? Both

I would take a guess that two leading candidates would be Mt. Olivet Cemetery
and St. Joseph Cemetery. Both are very close to Carnegie (and I have
Carnegie ancestors buried in both). Mt. Olivet is just off of SwallowHill
Road -- a tiny bit north of Carnegie, but only about a two or three minute
drive on some main roads. St. Joseph is another old cemetery just north of
the old center of town. It's also very close, though a little bit trickier
to find for the uninitiated. Located at the top of Magazine Street.

Your best bet is to call St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, which oversees both
cemeteries. There is no office at either cemetery. You can reach them at
412-276-1011. I would definitely try calling several days
before you come.

Lots of luck.

Comments:
These were my great-great grandparents. They lived 42 years in Carnegie PA, had 10 children there and are buried there. I will be in PA Aug 9 any help/advice you can give me. They moved to Struthers Ohio around 1909. I have looked at the 1900 census and cannot find them. Do you have Census for 1870 and 1880? They were Catholic any ideas what cemetery they may be buried at?? Both their obits say "place of buriel" Carnegie PA. Esther died Nov. 16, 1913 and was buried Nov. 19, 1913. Thomas died April 25, 1914 and was buried April 29, 1914. The obit said they were taken to the home of their son Charles Gallagher, who resided in Carnegie PA.

I was really hoping to visit their grave and take pictures for my records.

I am also looking for immigration/naturalization records for both. Thomas was born in Ireland and Esther in England.
