Written by Aaron Songer:
"My Great-Grandfather was the only male child woho got to this country. His mother (A Widow) immigrated from Germany, Starting here with three children, two boys and 1 girl; 1 of the boys died at sea and was buried at sea. All the Songers in the United States are supposed to have decended from this one boy".

In 2002 I said Dr. Herbert L Songer was the most decorated military officer in WWII. I should have written that he was the most decorated medical officer in WWII. I did not look at the sight until recently. Sorry for my mistake. Captain Songer was the field doctor who sent the man back to the hospital who was delerious with malaria for the second time, with orders not to send him back to the front again. This was the man that General Patton slapped.

He was promoted to major and received two purple hearts, a bronze star and the distinguished service cross. I know several of his other brothers were also in the service during the war. I have a list of Songers compiled by a cousin that I can share with you if you're interested. My husband, while not a Songer, is currently serving in Iraq!

In my home Town of Sharon, Pa you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Songer. Songer's in sharon are as common as stop signs. Its more of a klan! My cousins are more like my sisters and brothers and growing up with them was great. I currently live in Harrisburg, Pa, but I'm very proud of my family name. It's funny because i've never actually encountered another Songer other than family. It is reassuring to know that the people on this site are as proud of their family name as I am.

I found this site through the Songer message list. I have been working on my family history for awhile. Recently I started on my dads side (that's the Songer side). Can I add my father and his brother's information from their service in WWII? I need to verify their information with them first.
Thanks for the site it really brought to reality how many Songers are out there and a sense of family pride (even if we may not all be 1st cousins). We only met part of my grandfathers family, so it didn't appear to be that many. Boy have I been surprised.

My grandfather was Charles Songer of Bledsoe County TN He was born in 1888, I am trying to find out who his father is,and his father, me and my sister have found conflicting records concerning this. I think that all Songers are related, and decended from Jacob [Zanger] Songer, and Eva Catherina Angstatt, Is this correct?

I am trying to determine where the family name originated. My grandfather, Cleo Kenneth Songer, died in 1973. But before he died, he said the family originated around Strasbourg, France. It makes sense to me because the name Songer is actually a french verb pronounced "sonjay" which means to think or to dream. What do you know?
