Did you know?
The Department of Veterans Affairs established a service-connection for Vietnam veterans suffering from Parkinson's disease, ischemic heart disease (IHD) and B-cell leukemias such as hairy-cell leukemia. These illnesses are now considered "presumed" illnesses. This "presumption" simplifies and speeds up the application process for VA benefits. It is important to note that this new policy will not go into effect until sometime in 2010. At which point affected veterans will be urged to submit new disability claims.

Hello - My brother PFC Dennis M. Lyden KIA March 5, 1966. Dennis was not only my dear brother but my best friend and I miss him everyday. Perhaps the one thing that I shall never forget from his many letters was his statement 'finally I can honestly say I have a purpose'. I praise God for him! Lois

First, I would like to say how sorry I am to hear of John's passing. I just found this site a few days ago and wanted to comment about something I read concerning Captain Daily's unfortunate death in May of 1966.
In the tribute to Captain Daily Doc makes the statement; “General Depue had run out of white smoke to mark vc positions for the jet cover and used purple smoke - the same color we were using to mark our LZ.ö
This might lead some to think General DePuy had made the error. Nothing could be further from the truth. Although I was at the time a lowly SP4, I was the door-gunner and RTO when in the field for General DePuy. My Call sign Danger 77 ZULU. As part of the General's crew I was able to monitor all the radio traffic and keep abreast of the situation to anticipate what the General may want or need. I enjoyed my job as it allowed me to be in the know about everything going on in Division Tactical operations. General DePuy as you all know was not like General Seaman. If a shot was fired in his AO General DePuy wanted to be there.. NOW. I have flown a lot of brass around and DePuy and Hollingsworth were warriors to the core. You were in good hands with them but you were going to fight, or you would find yourself working in finance somewhere.
On the day in question, we had flown around the objective prior to the insertion of the 28th. The objective was maybe less than a click away from the LZ, maybe 5-600 meters. Prior to the insertion, an Air Force FAC and 2 F100s were working over the objective. We watched them make several bomb runs. As the first lift from the 28th approached the LZ I remember the FAC say he was out of rockets but he still had some smoke grenades. The first stick of helicopters landed without incident and dropped off the troops. That morning had been hazy and had a thin overcast down low. As the day progressed the thin clouds raised up and the ceiling went higher. The F100s would pop through the slight overcast when making their runs. Although I think they could see through the thin layer somewhat, I feel sure the F100 guys had a somewhat obstructed view of the target until they popped through the bottom of the little layer. The fighters were making their runs perpendicular to the route of flight of the insertion. That is, if you draw a big “Tö the jets were making the runs from right to left along and outside of the top of the T, and the vertical line in the “Tö is the route of flight of the lift ships.
After the first lift was on the ground the General said to tack onto the end of the next lift and go into the LZ and land. I can’t remember if the second lift had landed or not but we circled and started making the approach to the LZ. The FAC had thrown out a smoke grenade, as he was out of marking rockets. The color WAS purple. One of the f100s dropped a CBU on the objective and about that time I saw purple smoke on the LZ. I will remember this vividly until the day I die as we were on a pretty short final (less than a half mile). The F100 came through the layer just as on the other runs, and I assume from what I witnessed, the pilot saw the “otherö purple smoke suddenly because, the aircraft was on a stable run and suddenly jerked left and released the CBUs on what I feel sure he thought was a “newö target. We were close enough that I could see every bomblet and watched in horror at the destruction on the LZ. Through the noise of the helicopter I could hear the explosions and feel the shock. Maj Kearney jerked the helicopter in a steep bank and we did a tight circle while the General or one of his aides shouted over the air net to “cease fireö “cease fireö you have hit friendlies. An effort was begun to call back the lift ships to med-evac the wounded and we landed in the middle of hell. Injured men everywhere and I felt helpless as we had very little medical supplies other than a few first aid kits.
The C&C ship we were flying had very little room in it due to the large C&C radio console taking up most of the room in the center of the aircraft. Some guys came running to us with several seriously wounded men and it was apparent that we could maybe get two into the helicopter in a prone position. General DePuy said pull out the console and Crew Chief Clifford Leak and I tore out the C&C radio and most of the seats. This was done in a matter of minutes and we soon had room for about 5 or 6 guys. General DePuy said to take as many as we could to BN aid station (Not sure but think we went to Dau Tieng, I will have to refer to a map but we went to the closest medical facility to the LZ) and then come back for more. He remained on the ground with his troops during this time. I remember one man had a sucking chest wound and I think it was Crew Chief SP5 Clifford Leak that kept pressure on the plastic so he could breathe although one of the medics may have gone with us. While all this was going on, I had my hands full with a fellow that was in severe shock, shaking and flailing his arms. The other guys were pretty motionless and dazed. I had to hold on to this trooper because I was afraid he would throw himself out of the helicopter. He was full of shrapnel and a piece of the shrapnel had cut the top off a smoke he had fastened to his web gear, setting off the smoke grenade which spewed up the side of his face, horribly burning his face. I held him all the way back to the aid station telling him it was OK and he was going home. I have often wondered how this man did. If my memory serves me, he was Hispanic. He was in a bad state of shock with multiple injuries but was alive when we dropped him off. Leak’s guy wasn’t so lucky. Somewhere a couple of minutes prior to landing Leak said “He’s dead.ö I am sure some of the others on board survived despite the serious wounds.
The ride back to the LZ was very quiet until we caught a VC in the open. He caught the fury of our wrath as he died in that clearing.
After reviewing the declassified after action reports I see that a total of 58 men were wounded and 2 KIA. I have found through the years After action reports sometimes don't tell the whole story and battle can produce many different points of view depending on position of the observer.
I respect Doc's perspective as he was on the LZ. But, I want every Black Lion to know that General DePuy did NOT mark his own troops; Of all the colors available, what are the chances of two elements in close proximity to each other to use the same color? Well it happened that day, and the incident did, as Doc said, lead to a SOP in the Division and throughout RVN for certain colors only to be used for targets and others for marking friendly positions. And just as Doc says, it likely saved many lives and went a long way towards reducing this sort of tragic incident which has touched so many lives. I returned to the Division in 1969 as a Cobra Pilot and I assure you I made damn sure of my target before slinging rockets at it as my memory of this incident will be with me till the day I die.
As a side note: One of my hooch mates and two good friends, Door gunner Max Barnwell and Crew chief Danny Neth Died while kicking out ammo to Lt Hibbs' platoon of Black Lions just north of Bear Cat a few months before.

Just found the site. I'll be back. I (2LT Richard E Lindsey) was the field artillery forward observer from C/2/33rd artillery assigned to B/2/28 from the staging area at Bien Hoa, the convoy to Lai Khe, until mid December 1965 when I was wounded and med-evaced home.
When I quickly read through Joe Cardosi's write up, I remembered all the people he named. I probably knew the platoon leaders best from all the time we spent hiking in the jungle. I especially remember Fish (snakeater) who came walking up to me one morning holding a cobra by the hood and offered to share it with me. Fish and Hibbs had a competition going for who would have the first confirmed kill. I was kneeling behind Fish when he won the competition and I confirmed it to Bob Hibbs.
More later.

I've posted here on prior occasions relative to my friend, Sgt Frank Kobor (KIA 7/3/69). A couple of years ago, through this site, I was able to put Jerry Pritchett in touch with Frank's family. This was very important to them. Thank you, Jerry.
Every July 4 the Kobor family commemorates Frank. This past 4th was the 40th anniversary of his death. I made the trip to Chicago from San Diego to be there. With me I brought cards and letters written by Frank's grammar/high school friends. Below is a single paragraph of my letter to Frank's family. I'm posting it here because it applies to so many others.
Semper Fi Black Lions
"As have others, I’ve visited with Frank many times at The Wall. Leaving is always very difficult as I cannot tell him when I will return. However, great comfort is taken recognizing he is surrounded by so many other men, good men, brave men, men who served when called, men who are in every sense of the word, true heroes. Frank is in good company."

First off, I would like to send my thanks to all who served, fighting for this country and keeping the beliefs that our constitution stands for.
My father Manuel A. Rios, is a Vet (Co. C, 2D 28th Inf, 1st) who fought along side some of you during his tour in '66. we are trying to find a site dedicated to C Company. Or at least something to help him put names to some of the faces he remembers. He has an old photo album and is willing to upload all the photos he took if he could get answers to what happen to his group.

July 3, 1969. This morning I honor the memory of Frank Kobor. Frank was killed forty years ago this date on combat patrol with the first platoon of Dauntless Bravo. Frank was a son, a soldier, a sergeant, and a friend to many who continue to honor his life and his memory. Frank, it still seems like yesterday. Your country is grateful for your service. You have not been forgotten.

I read the book "They Marched Into Sunlight". It was fascinating and heartbreaking. I cried for those men who gave their lives for this country, including the ungrateful people who turned on this nation and those who served in Viet Nam. I don't know if any of the survivors will see this, but I want to say Thank You for your sacrifice.

From my converstions with John since April of '07 I know without a doubt that he is now in Heaven with our Lord. I hope that his wife and children can find some comfort with that thought, although the loss of a loved one is not an easy thing to endure.
John, I will miss you, as I consided you to have been such a friend. Rest In Peace, Brother.

Hello, I stumbled on your site today and greatly enjoyed it. I was a young draftee and OCS graduate when I served as platoon leader of 1st Platoon, Co. B, 2/28th Infantry from roughly October of 1969 until the 1st was deployed back to the states in (I think) early 1970. After the unit disbanded, I went to the 173rd and returned to the field as a platoon leader with a mechanized infantry unit. After returning to CONUS I served briefly as Battalion Adjutant for the 544th S&S Battalion before mustering out in early 1971. I have a couple of photos that I would be glad to forward if you would like to add them to your site. Thanks for your great effort! E. Mercer

John, I just wanted to say that I have been in contact with some people who got hold of me through your web site. I am so very grateful. I also had a reunion with Larry Sargent, Jay Holt, John Costanzo, and Louie Ragusa (all served in D 2/28th Inf from 68 to 69)in Phoenix from 4-7 May 01, and I will send you some photos as soon as I get back from Fort Gordon, Georgia. I have to go to an Army school for 5 wks until 22 Sep 01. I will try to call you while I'm in the states. All my love to you Brother, Dave (Bravo and Delta 2/28 '66-'67 and Delta from '68-'69)
After I posted this message to John McCoy I subsequently had another reunion with Louie Ragusa and Larry Sargent down in Tampa Florida just a coupld of days after 9/11. We had a great time and after I graduated from my courses my beloved girlfriend and I toured Colorado before returning to Germany. Larry passed away from lung cancer shortly after that and I miss him still. I am still in touch with his daughter Jennifer. Since 2001 I have attended 5 different Big Red One or Black Lion Reunions and I can only say that each one has been a healing experience of the highest order. I recommend the reunions to everyone. Put aside your fears about awakening old wounds, minor anxieties, and worries about the expense and just GO!Take your wives or girlfriends too because it is just as healing for them to talk to other "significant others" who have lived with, loved and cared for survivors of Vietnam. God Bless You All,

In remebrance of a great friend and a top notch soldier, William Edgar Anderson. He was taken from us on October 9, 1967 - 40 years ago.
Andy was the kid of guy that got along with everyone. His home town, Acme, Pennsylvania, suffered a great loss that day.
One of the memories that I have of Andy is the way he kept his weapon. It was always spotless, even the day he was killed. I remember seeing him holding it above his head to protect it.
The first day he came in Bravo Company, we were digging fox holes. He pitched right in like he was an old timer. He adapted quickly to the ways of a combat soldier.
Andy was the first casuality of Operation Shenadoah II. It is a shame that he was never recognized for losing his life in this battle.
Less than an hour earlier Delta Company had been hit in that very spot. Bravo Company was then sent there. Andy was point. He did this with plenty of guts because he knew there was fortified bunkers there.
To this day Andy's friendship is special to me. It is hard to believe that in the short time we soliered together the memories would last a life time.
He was a truly brave Black Lion soldier and he is sadly missed.
His friend and fellow soldier,
Don Koch

Striking similarities to current day coverae and attitudes:
General Giap was a brilliant, highly respected leader of the North Vietnam military.
The following quote is from his memoirs currently found in the Vietnam war memorial in Hanoi:
"What we still don't understand is why you Americans stopped the bombing of Hanoi. You had us on the ropes. If you had pressed us a little harder, we were ready to surrender! It was the same at the battles of TET. You defeated us! We knew it, and we thought you knew it. But we were elated to notice your media were definitely helping us. They were causing more disruption in America than we could in the battlefields. We were ready to surrender. You had won!

For 30-some years I have searched for someone or someplace to get some information on my good friend, Frank Kobor. Just today I located your site.
Frank and I grew up together in Chicago. He was drafted just a few months prior to my being called. I still remember his letters coming to me while I was still in boot camp in San Diego. More memorable, however, was his mother's letter informing me he was killed. I can still see her words. Shortly thereafter, maybe two weeks or so, I received another letter from Frank, obviously mailed prior to 7/3/69. I regret not saving those letters. All these years I've stayed in touch with his mother and sisters. I would like nothing more than to communicate with someone who knew Frank. Earlier today I sent an email message to Jerry Pritcett, whose address appears elswhere on this site. Hopefully, the address is still good. For myself, Frank's family and many of Frank's friends, thank you in advance for contacting me.

Hello to all Black Lions from Former Dauntless 30Kilo. I was The RTO for Carl (Capt Karl S. Kizer) whom was sadly KIA shortley after I left in April of 1968. Any one that knew Carl knew him to be a great guy and one that you would remember for life. I will always remember fondly of the times that he would tap my steel pot with his little wooden cane and pick at me. Or for him to get me to show him where we were on map to make sure that I was reading Map correctly, as we were responsible for calling in air strikes. Or times at night that we would write our letters home using flashlights hidden by our pauncho liners. Or the sorrow that we shared on April 1 1968 when Gary Harris was KIA while on search and destroy that day. We also lost many of our friends on Oct. 17 and thru the time that I was with unit from Oct 1967 thru April 1968. May they all have our fondest memories and blessings along with their families. And my wishes is that the families would know the love and respect that we have for our fallen comrades along with the many wonderful memories shared.
God Bless,
Doug Davis
PS. Special hello to Gen Menetry, Hinch, and Daughtry and Sgt Major in the command group at that time.

As we celebrate our national holiday of independence, I would ask each of us take a moment of silence to celebrate the life of Frank L. Kobor who died serving his nation while on combat patrol with B 2-28 on July 3, 1969. His death is still fresh in my mind after all these years. May he and his brothers (and sisters)who were not as fortunate as those of us who returned from those distant jungles rest in peace with the deep gratitude of this nation. May God bless us all.

Hi John - I've been to this site several times and it just dawned on me today that I think I "know" you. Are you from New York and did you put notices in the VVA Veteran that you were looking for Black Lions? I was writing for a Red Cross newsletter at the time and had put an ad in the Veteran requesting pictures of Donut Dollies. If this is you, you had written to me and may have sent a few pics, but said you'd lost almost everything else. I sent you my Black Lions patch. Well...I want it back! Just kidding. Congratulations on an excellent site...I know Patty and Steve Fortenberry from Lai Khe. Also have reunited with many guys from the 1st in Kokomo, Indiana several years ago. Small, small world.

I found this info on the web and thought I'd pass it on
Charles G. Clinger
Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army
His stone in Section 8 of Arlington National Cemetery reads:
Charles G. Clinger
Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army
June 6, 1944 - April 11, 1993
"It is better to have lived one day as a lion than one thousand days as a sheep" is engraved on his stone.
If pressed to explain why former Blacklions have such pride in their old unit I would borrow those
engraved words.

As I celebrate our many freedoms this Memorial Day, I encourage each of us who was fortunate enough to fight for this great nation and live to fight another day, or another war, take a moment to reflect on our brothers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Dont' forget their famimlies; the mothers and fathers who forever will remember that 18, 19, or 20 year old shiny, bright soldier who got on the plane or ship for Europe, Korea, VietNam, Southwest Asia, nad never again returned home for the holiday picnic or Christmas tree. The wives who began another life, not by choice; or the children who were never again tucked in by their dads, uncles, or cousins again. Our freedoms today are many and precious. We should never forget that they are not without great cost. From time to time, the price will agin be paid, as today in far away places, as well as here in the homeland.
Black Lions, I salute you one and all.

I tagged along on a lot of his "dates" with Wanda. George had an aura of greatness and compassion about him. He will always be "the best".
I know that a newspaper reporter by the name of Peter Arnat (spelling may be wrong) followed George on assignement at times. Is he still alive? I'd like to contact him. I knew George as my big brother. I would like to know about him as an adult. Anyone who knew him I would appreciate some insight.

I was a green ROTC 2Lt. who was assigned to the Big Red 1 at Ft. Riley. Luckily like some others of you, I found myself reporting to Captain George Dailey and became his 4th(Weapons)Platoon Leader. I served with B Co. in Lai Khe (and other unnamed places) from Oct/65 to Apr/66 when I was transferred out as part of the state-side rotation plan and went to a Special Forces camp south of Nha Trang until 9/66.
I have since retired from the Army Reserve as an O-5 after 28yrs. I am the lieutnant Wanda Dailey refers to who goes each year to visit George's grave in Ft. Atkinson, WI. He was my CO and my friend and because of his concern for his
"troops", I am alive today and have enjoyed many years with a loving family. He was not so fortunate but he has my eternal gratitude for his leadership and his sacrifice while standing squarely in "Harm's Way". Black Lion, Sir!!

Greetings Bravo, Outstanding Site:
I served with Alpha 2/28 from June 67- June 68...I was a "new guy" on Billings, and during ShenandoahII was a Sp/4 fireteam leader/pointman. I fought in the 10/17/67 Battle of Ong Thanh a member of 1st platoon-2nd squad [1/2] We were point squad left column...Up front, they had a basecamp, fighting positions on the ground, as well as men in the trees [some of them tied up there] fields of fire cut and covered and DH10 claymores. My personal opinion: L shaped Ambush.....In any event the many acts of heroism by my fellow Black Lions has stayed with me all my life.
A promotion to Sgt.E-5 and a squad of my own soon followed 17 Oct. and I'm proud to report that I kept my people squared away and alive for the remainder of my tour.
I'm proud to have served my Country with the Black Lions and the Big Red One.
Here's wishing my fellow Black Lions and their loved ones my best wishes and warmest regards
Black Lions!

I severed with Bravo 1/28th from July 67 to July 68. I was scheduled to ship from Ft. Lewis with the men who formed Delta 2/28th. I was called home on emergency leave. Flew over later. We trained together at Ft.Polk, LA. I recognize many names form the Ong Thanh casualty and survivor lists. I was on patrol a couple clicks away with the 1/28th. We turned toward the fighting but were too far away to arrive before dark. Our experiences up to that day was almost identical to the 2/28th. Snipers, bunkers, claymores, mortor rounds etc. On one patrol Capt. Hill our executive officer (he was waiting for reassignment)trialed the patrol setting charges. I remember blowing up a bunker filled with hundreds of Ho Chi Minh sandles. Every patrol slowed by snipers. Some patrols were hit before the cleared our perimeter. We hid in our bunkers while B-52s bombed our perimeter on all sides. I knew little about Ong Thanh until I met some more trianing buddies from the 1/16 at Quan Loi after Bu Dop. Proud to be a Black Lion.

Originally assigned as 1st plt ldr 13 Mar 66, later on assumed the duties of company executive officer, and acting cmdr when Cpt Dailey and others were killed and wounded. Continued as XO until Dauntless 6 rotated XO's, and I was assigned as XO of Charlie Company in Sep 66 until Mar 67. Have often wondered if anyone has any picture of the "VC pig" rehabed as George and stayed in the company area until it was "captured" and consumed by visiting security company in Sep I believe. Most of the time George stayed in company area, but ultimately would drift into the beer tent where he would hang one on, usually encouraged by 1st plt sgt Espiritu, who often got him drunk and a morning hangover, George I mean.

I was with Bravo 2/28th and got wounded in July 1967 and medevac'ed down to 24th Evac in Long Binh. I stayed there about 11 days then took an unofficial 3-day pass to Saigon (I figured...I'm sooo close! Why not? so I got me a Xyclo Bus packed with mamasans and chickens.....) When I got back to B Company the acting first sergeant told me I was going over to Delta Company. And that it was this brand new company that was to be made out of something called "C Pack" (sp?). I felt utterly betrayed. I still had the wire sutures in my leg from the wound. I went over there with a very sullen attitude and I was in no mood for working with a bunch of "Twinks". Then I met Red Adkins (Donald) from A Company and some others and I didn't feel so bad. Crutcher, Adkins, Everman, Butch (Marvin) Cook, Fuqua, Williams, and Domoneck and I became best of friends, who were more like Brothers and I still miss Fuqua, Crutcher, and Adkins to this day. I later was wounded again on 9 Oct 1967 and I deros'ed back to the world after Shenandoah II was over on 8 Nov 67. Six months later I returned to D 2/28 for another tour, from May 15 1968 to May 14 1969, but that is another story.

I was really pleased to see John's note on the Black Lion webpage and the link to the Bravo Co. site. He has done a great job of putting this together. Every time I check he has made new additions and improvements. Thanks for taking the point on this, John!
For those who didn't catch my spotlight appearance on the site (thanks again, John), I was a medic with Bravo Co. from Oct. - Dec. '67, and with Recon in early '67. I was 3rd Platoon medic and then Senior Aidman for the company for awhile. Reading the memories of the bad old days on Shenandoah II has brought back a lot of my own memories. Thanks to the guys for sharing those.
I have been privileged in the last few years to be able to touch base with some old friends, including Tom Hinger, Tom Grady, and Joe Costello from the Alpha Company Mafia, as well as General Shelton and the ever-popular Dauntless Goody. It has been a really positive experience and one that was too long in happening. It is great that John has provided a forum for those of us who shared those experiences to get in touch with each other again.
Take care,
