Who is your AMBROSE ancestor? John Ambrose born between 1885-18895
How did you find this site? Member of Morgan County Historical Society
Comments:
Hello, my name is Sam. I am trying to trace my genealogy of course, and I am looking for a John Ambrose who supposely fathered Edward Chester Beard (b.Oct 7, 1914) by Cora Madeline Beard (b.Sept.8, 1895). This was a child out of wedlock. Neither party was married at the time. Edward was raised by his Grandfather, William Henry Beard. Does anyone know any of this information??? The family lived in Morgan Co. WV when Edward was born. Edward moved to Hancock MD with his Grandfather after age 5. His Birth Certificate shows he was born in Berkeley Springs. All I am going on is a story that Cora and John did not marry, and Cora later married Oscar Henline and moved from the home leaving behind her son. I don't mean any hard feelings this may cause a few, but I would love to know if this story is true. If so, I would love to be able to fill in the blanks in my genealogy.

I like the pictures you have of both Mabel and Peter. Today, I received a copy of a newsletter put out by the Calhoun County Historical Society which was published in Summer of 2002. It had a copy of a letter from Mabel telling stories about Peter when he was growing up in Michael, IL. It said it was one of several letters..I was wondering if you have any more stories Mabel wrote about their lives in Calhoun County. I am interested in knowing more about Pete's dad (John). He is the great great grandfather of my husband Michael Schneider. Any information or little stuff about them will be greatly appreciated.

After trying many "dead ends" in my family tree on the internet and coming up with nothing, I am very happy to have found this site. Thanks to all of you who've contibuted! I was wondering if the "verfch" on Mathias Ambrose's headstone isn't actually "versch" since "f's" and some "s's" in the old script are almost identical. If this be the case then "versch" is probabley short for "verschieden" which means passed away. Another thought I had was the spelling of his first name as Mathys. I've seen this spelling with the letter "y" used by my Dutch ancestors. It stands for the modern spelling of "ij" like in "Mathijs". It sounds somewhat like how we say the word "eye". I thought I'd throw this out there just in case it might help locate Mathys' birthplace in Germany (posibley near northern Belgium or the Netherlands?). Thanks again for all the work done to put this together!

I have a sentimental item to share with a descendant of this line. I purchased a photo of this family at a local "junk shop" because I can't bear to see a treasure separated from it's family. Photo taken in 1877, black/white or sepia, about 10x13. I'm sure it is the same folks as the ones in the photo posted on this site. It has all the family names written on back. I'd want some "proof" document, reinbursement of the $20 I paid for the item, plus shipping. If I find a family member it will be my fourth successful reunion of a heirloom item with it's rightful family. I have taken a picture of the photo and will attemp to post it to this site. The photo is in great shape and much shaper than it appears it my picture of it.

Hello All,
The page is looking great Pat. I back to searching for more information about my Ambrose relatives. I wonder if anybody has any information re Clifton Ambrose. I have searched cenus reports and can not find any record. I have my grandmother's Nancy Ambrose Bartolini journals from 1902 to 1904. She writes about Clifton and her other cousins the Millers. She was living with her parents John William and Elizabeth Vanorsdale Ambrose in Martinsburg West Virginia. There are numerous people and places mentioned in her journals but Clifton is mentioned frequently as he stayed with them on numerous occasions. I hope to be going to West Virginia at the end of April to see what else I can find.

I also have a reference to an Edingfield marrying into the Cailey family in I believe Highland Co OH.

My grandfather Vance Rannells Ambrose was born in McArthur Ohio in 1860, died in Columbus, Ohio in 1952. He was the youngest (we think) of 5 brothers, one of whom went by the name Will. Vance had three children, Edna, Joe and John. Edna was from a previous marriage (wife UNK) and she was much older than Joe and John. I have very little information about her or earlier Ambrose relatives. My uncle, Joseph Vance Ambrose, was born in Columbus, Ohio on 21 Jan 1922 and died in Columbus, Ohio 20 Dec 1993 - no decendents. My father, John Hanson Ambrose, born Jan 23, 1923 has three children: Cheryl Lynn (1948), Van John (1952) and me - Gayla Jean (1954).

You have a wonderful site. Neat pictures. I will send you some of mine.

My father told me someone did some research and said that our decendents were Welsh. Anyone know more about that line of Ambrose's?

I'm also going to send them the links to the societies you list who have updated and confirmed your/my concerns about this issue, but I'd like your permission before I send them directly to this website.

Thanks--looking forward to hearing from you.

I claim descent from one Thomas W.B. Ambrose of East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana who died in the 1830's. His father was evidently Elijah Ambrose who married Margaret (Martha) Bradford in 1808 in Pointe Coupee Parish. T.W.B. Ambrose left a minor son, Robert Elijah Ambrose, who became a Confederate captain during the Civil War. I am seeking evidence of Ambrose ancestry beyond T.W.B. Ambrose.

I have done research for over 23 years but mainly on my dad's side of the family. I had bits and pieces of mom's side but she did that. She recently passed away and I have started to take up her lines. Which are Morris, Ambrose, Clark, Sandlin, Brown,McKelvey,McGarvey on her mothers side and Smith, Solander, Lobaugh on her dad's. I have enjoyed finding new relatives and I always love to correspond with them. Thank you Pat for this oppurtinity. Cathie

I have been researching the AMBROSE family for many years and have neverfound theright Frederick for my William Ambrose in Deleware Co. Ohio. I think my Frederick was married in Belmont Co. Ohio to Elizabeth Porterfield, 11 Jan 1827. My William married Delia Manter in Deleware Co. and died 28 Jan, 1864 and is buried in the old Cheshire Cem. in Deleware Co. My grandfather Edson Benjamin was only one year old. This is proven.

Laura Ambrose married Austin Coffey, a wounded Union solidier, cared for him until he healed and also hiding him from the Confederates. They fell in love and married. She was disowned by her family. I have a picture of Laura. My grandmother, Lula May Coffey, stated all of this to us.

Pat, I would reference the surname spelling of Elisabeth EICHENBRODTIN wife of Heinrich Ambrose. She was the daughter of my immigrant ancestor, Johan Jost EIGENBROD. Therefore, the spelling should be corrected. If any of your Ambrose folks are following her family line, I can assist them back to Germany to Johan Jost's father Johan Daniel who came from Freinsheim in the Rheinland-Pfalz and later from Schwarzenau in Wittgenstein.

Elizabeth was b. 4 Mar 1761 and bp. 19 Mar 1761 at the Moravian Church, Graceham, Frederick County, MD
