I plan to come to Oswego to research John McGraw/McGrath, wife Ellen for the 1860s but I'd like to gather as much info as to where to search in the area. Sons John, born 1860, and Michael, born 1866, in Oswego, daughter Margaret born 1864 in Rensselaer County. 1870 census shows Ellen and children alone in Oswego. What happened to John (farm worker??) between 1866 and 1870? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. I've already written to Catholic Churches with no discoveries.

One area of my research is the EVERETT family:This group were NOT from the huge Massachusetts .families of EVERETTS. They descended from a Richard EVERIT in Conn, who married before 1741 an Elizabeth-4-[REYNOLDS ]. Then,my descent using this Richard as GEN.-1, is Joseph-2-; Thomas Acton-3 ;George A.-4- ;Thomas Benjamin-5-EVERETT-born 1850 Sidney; Delaware Co.,NY.; Albert Delos-6- EVERETT.
Albert D.-6-known as Bert ,was born Oswego, Oswego Co. in 21.SEP.1873 and died in Sayre,Bradford County,Penn. on 02.Jan. 1924. His mother was Eliza Jane [CAPRON ] of Lisle,Broome Co.NY.
Albert/ Bert had a younger sister named Mabel EVERETT. A nickname when young was 'Kittie'. There were or are some descendants of this Mabel [EVERETT ] DELANEY in Oswego County. I am trying to reach them for the following reasons:
1) To locate further information about Mabel's FATHER, Thomas Benjamin-5-EVERETT after 1880 until his death:This is an unknown to me. And to uncover this Thomas-5- Mother HARRIET M.'s MAIDEN NAME-also unknown to me and for which I have searched for over 15 years now.
2) To share info. on this family with descendants who might have an interest.
Mabel [EVERETT] married William DELANEY in 1899. Their children were-Gladys,b.191901 and married first to MORRISON and second to TYLER, and third to LOWELL: Angeline,b.1903 married NOBLE in the Cortland area; and William Floyd DELANEY b.1908 [married CHAPMAN].
Some descendants of Gladys [DELANEY] are to be found in OSWEGO. COUNTY,NYS. The name places are PHOENIX and WEST MONROE. Others in ONONDAGA County are Central Square and Liverpool.
Here-for contact purposes -I am listing only SURNAMES: Some may be deceased and some living and some are in a later generation.
MORRISON; and PICQUET.
Thank you for Posting this information and query. Charlotte J.Sheldon

Great site. Have found much information and am always looking for more. I am a descendant of Dwight and Bessie Kingsbury and of Edward and (Hannah) Margaret (Hess) Andrews.

Edward Andrews was born in England and may have had a sister Catherine and a brother William. Catherine married Dr. F A Havill. All lived in Constantia. I am looking for any information on parents of Edward, Catherine, and William.

Dwight Kingsbury was born in Boonville about 1870. His father was Ira Manley Kingsbury who died 1871. Dwight's mother was Almira Geraldine Youngs. After Ira's death, she married Jacob Bauer. At about the age of 13, Dwight lived with his grandfather, Michael Youngs. In later years, Dwight lived in Oswego and Onondaga counties. I am looking for any information as to Dwight's parents who I believe to be Leonard Kingsbury and Anna Marie Preston.

I had relatives who lived in Oswego. Thier last name was "BARNES", and I was always told of the "farm" they lived on. According to what I was told, it was an "apple" farm, and there once stood a big, 2-story, boxed shaped farm house. I think My sister here in Virginia, still has the tin stencil that was used to label the bushel basket tops full of apples, using an inked roller. Do you have any information on this. Thank you so much. I also have a friend that use to live out Hannibal or Mexico way, by the name of Carol Forest. Her x-husband ran a bar downtown, They had 4 children.

I got on your website to see where Chateaugay was. Every time I put in that place name for rootsweb's us town/county database, it comes up with both Oswego and Franklin Counties. My people are from Franklin County back in the late 1700 and up to the 1880's. They then went to Michigan. But my parents moved to Syracuse in 1938 just after I was born. My grandmother bought a cottage on Dempster Beach so I know Oswego County somewhat, having spent most of my summers there in the 40's and 50's. I was interested to see the picture of the hospital and nursing home. In that hospital they once saved my father's life after a heart attack. And I must mention the book by Janet Lund, The Root Cellar. I taught 4th grade and it was a read aloud every year that the students just loved. The descriptions of Oswego took me back to my childhood. If you have not read that book, I'm sure your library has it. If you love history, you'll love this book!

I have not looked at this site for a while. My ancester was Edmund Manners, his parents were John Morton Manners & Nancy Ainsworth (nee Beardsley)who marr. at Christ Church on 21 Sep 1844, it is now Church of the Resurrection. I have the marriage record, but have never been able to find an official record for Edmunds birth on 2 Sep 1845 (taken from the family bible)There were 2 other children Alfred b 5 Dec 1847 in Oswego and then they moved to Dixon, Illinois where Alfred died in Nov 1849 and a girl was b. & d there also. I would love to have an actual record from the Church Records of his christening to confirm the bible entry, thank you, Margaret Dunstan

Your web site is a welcome find. I am researching the ancestors/family of a famous Arizona pioneer who i think came from one of Oswego County's families: the Bicknell family. Although he died in Arizona his estate seems to have been settled May of 1906 in Syracuse, New York. His brother Eugene P. Bicknell looks to have been the primary heir. So this is what brought me to your web-site.

Very pleased to find your web site. I'm doing genealogy and found a rabbit trail I'd like to explore. It is a photo from M.S. Lovell & Son, Oswego, N.Y. My presumption is that it is of my grandfather, Harry Adelbert Miller, born Cass Cty, MI 9/17/1871. He attended Univ. of Chicago in the late 1880s and perhaps moved on to Oswego to teach or as a minister. In the picture, the subject "looks" professional in coat and tie, heavy dark rim glasses, well groomed. He returned to MI and married in 1893. Any information will be appreciated.

Very nice site. My ancestor, Captain Isaac M. Green (1809-1887)was a ship master who sailed from Oswego, beginning as a child of 10. He became master of the Arcadia in 1829 and retired from the lakes in 1865. I have accumulated quite a bit of information on him and would love to share it with those interested in early Great Lakes shipping. At some point I will put it in a nice packet and send it to this site.

Date: 2006-04-29
Comments:
Oops! I got ahead of myself in the sign-in note, below, and forgot to mention that the first time anyone in the Gaston family named one of their children 'DeForest' was when my Grandfather, Frank DeForest Gaston, was born to great grandmother, Phylinda Bristol Gaston, in 1857. The name 'stuck': Father (Audley DeForest, sr) and he gave it to me. And I've been trying to determine where it came from.
That it never occurred before Phylinda Bristol joined the family, I have speculated that she is the one who brought it to the table - maybe because she knew someone in the Bristol family who was named 'DeForest' (there are several)

Name: Audley DeForest Gaston <adgaston@earthlink.net>
Date: 2006-04-29
Comments:
This is about a long-standing, and as yet unsuccessful, search for the identity of the parents of my great Grandmother, Phylinda Bristol. Since the first occurrence of the name 'DeForest'in the Gaston family took place with the birth - to Phylinda Bristol Gaston, I have long suspected that 'DeForest' was the name of someone in the Bristol family bearing that name. And so, I have been looking for any Bristols with the name 'DeForest' in hopes that I might find a clue to Grandmother Phylinda's roots.
It's dicey, I know, but having been at it for so long, I'm now given to taking long-shots.
I've found lots of stuff in the Oswego newspaper archives referring to DeForest Bristol of 301 Walnut St., Oswego, and wonder if any of his living descendants can tell me anything about the family - - especially about any long-lost cousins.
Oh BTW: Phylinda had a twin sister, Lucinda.

Hi everyone! I am searching for my Irish ancestors,in particular, my great-great grandfather, Bartholomew Scanlon, born circa 1830, who immigrated circa 1848, and for 10 years was in NY, but don't know where. His 1st child, John, was supposed to have been born there in Apr.1855. They ended up in Flint, Mich., where in married, had 6 more children, and died in 1911. Need to know who mother of John was and where/when they were married, when she died. Curious about immigration patterns in NY area, and if Bartholomew was a laborer on the canal system. His occupation was shown as cement mason. Were records kept of laborers working on the canals in Oswego County? John's obituary says he was born in Rochester. Can you give me any leads as to what labor records are available there or in the surrounding area? My thanks for your time and consideration. Mary Ramirez

Great resource, and best of luck. My family Michael and Mary Healy came to Oswego in the last quarter, or so, of the 19th century. Their son Jeremiah Healy was my great grandfather and he settled there with his parents (Michael and Mary), sister Helena(who married John Murphy) and brother John. My great grandfather Jeremiah married Mary McGrath in Oswego. Mary had a sister Jo (Josephine) who married Fred Hollenbeck. Jo and Fred remained on Oswego. Jeremiah and Mary moved to East Syracuse. I believe Helena and John Murphy remained in Oswego as did Helena and Jeremiah's brother John Healy. I believe his daughter may have been Rennie Moran who remained in Michael and Mary's house until she died in that gray house in 1986. Mary McGrath Healy died in E. Syr in 1910, but was buried in Oswego. If anyone knows of them or remaining relatives, I would love to hear from them. Thank you, Carol Farron

Laura,
COuld you post this on the Richland Web page.
"On Tuesday February 20, 2007 the town of Richland will mark it's two hundredth anniversary. The town Board will meet that night (its usual night) and will likely begin by marking the anniversary.
On Saturday February 17, 2007 Town Historian Shawn Doyle is planning a 200th birthday commemoration, likely to be held at the H. Douglas Barclay Court House in Pulaski. The event will feature displays on local history, hor d'erves, coffee, tea and other light refreshments. Doyle anticipates monthly events throughout 2007 to mark this auspicious event. During the 2007 Oswego County Fair a large display will also be built.
Historian Doyle is seeking photos and family histories to include in the display at this event, and also throughout the year 2007. We are especially looking forward to people whose families left Pulaski/Richland over the past 200 years.
Contact Shawn at 85 Lake St., Pulaski, NY 13142 SPDinPUL@hotmail.com"

My family was in Oswego in the 1850-1917 years. Their name was Gardenier. John Gardenier, a dairyman and his family on Gardenier Road. I am curious as to the cause of death of two of his children in 1911. Jennie died in August, and William (Jay) in December. Do you know of any typhoid or diptheria in Oswego at that time? Thank you.

I'm looking for my great grandfather, John J. McGraw, who seems to have disappeared from the record in the late 1860's in the Oswego area. His wife, Ellen (Nellie), is listed in the 1870 census for Oswego and their sons,John (1860) and Michael (1866) were born in Oswego while their daughter, Margaret (1864) was born in Rensselaer County. John and Ellen were, I believe, married in 1859 while living on the Nyack farm in the southern tier of New York State. I have already written to the Catholic churches in the area with only negative responses. I would be glad to come to Oswego if there were some indication that records for the appropriate time period were available for review. Any assistance in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

I was happy to see the information on the 147th NYVI on the web. I have been doing research on the 147th for almost twenty years especially as it pertains to 2nd Lieutenant William Sullivan Co. I. I have thoroughly reserched his military and pension records and have written a summary of his activities. It was submitted to the Oswego County Historical Society in 1993. Additional information was received in 2003 which allowed me to complete the post war records as it pertained to his discharge and pension. I also was in receipt of his commission papaers, a sketch of his campsite at Petersburg with Lt. McKinley and his daguerrotype in uniform. These have all been archivally preserved and most recently returned to his great grandson for the family to keep as part of their heritage. It should be noted that in the history of the 147th Sullivan is listed as having been severely wounded when he carried the flag back to save it. In fact he was not wounded at all. In addition I have the camp chair of the Assistant Surgeon who was transferred to the 147th from the 76 Reg.t in Jan 1864. It is all in original condition. I also have some Carte de Visites as well. I would like to know what happened to the regimental flag that was at the centennial celebration in 1965. It appeared there and was reportedly "lost" Does anyone have any informastion on that. The NYS flag repository has two guidons and one national flag but is not aware of the additional flag I am inquiring about. Thanks for you help and I would like to be in contact with your group if possible on a regular basis.

My grandmother was Nellie Pratt Glazier Rappelye of Minetto. My father, born in 1916, left Oswego for prep school and never came back. I've lots of Ringland family memorabilia and no one to leave it to--with no male children our name dies with me. Is there a museum/library in Oswego that would want these papers/photos, etc?

Stumbled on this site today, for the first time. AT least two years I discovered the name of Charles Boonshot listed as a volunteer enlistee in the 81st infantry regiment New York, on 14 September 1861, and mustered out Company B, 81st infantry regiment New York on 15 September 1864 in Bermjda Hundred, VA.
Since my great uncle, father and brother all have the name of Charles Boonshot, you can understand why this interested me. Have tried to find more information, but no luck so far.
Our name was Bodenschatz, from Bavaria, Germany, and Americanized somewhere along the way to Boonshot. That is too much of a coincidence not to be related to us in some way. What I really need to know is what happened to him after the Civil War. Did he marry, have children, where is he buried, etc.? If anyone knows anything at all, would really appreciate hearing from whoever. Thanks.

I grew up in Oswego and left to enter the military in 1955. Many of my ancesters came from Oswego and the Scriba area, particularly. The name Kessler in my family is adopted from an uncle of my father's (Linas) who adopted the name when he immigrated from Lithuania around the turn of the century. On my mother's side (Elaine) the names were Congdon, Newell, Morgan and DuBois. If any of these names are of interst, I can send that potion of my genealogy on a cd.

In the last couple of years, I have become very interested in finding my family history. My grandmother lived for many years on Mohawk St. in Oswego. I'm pretty sure my Aunt still lives there in her house. Anna M Proctor/Johnson was born in Germany and came here as a young child. My mother's father [ Charles Proctor], died soon after she was born. Grandmother Johnson, married Charles Johnson around 1903 0r 1904. My aunt Ruth Johnson/Savage will celebrate her 100 th birthday in November. I would love to be able to bring her some news . She has helped me in my search so far. My causin Barbara Peas also has been a big help. I wish to find out more about Charles Proctor [ my grandfather] and Charles Johnson, my grandmothers late husband. She has been gone since 1985, but she is not forgotten. She was a church goer and a volunteer. She lived many years there. I would be glad to donate to your cause if I could only get some help. Thank you Nancy [Nihoff] Seelman--306 Third Avenue
