I have a tape of fiddle music made in 1848 by my great uncle Arthur J. Hogg, then principal of Rural Valley High School, recorded by musicologist Samuel Bayard. Just got the tape from a cousin, and have converted it to CD. Terrible quality, but of historic and musical importance to me and my family, anyway.
Includes a few short children's songs by Mabel Black and her elementary school class, at the same gathering, I suppose.
Bayard published 651 "Instrumental folk tunes in Pennsylvania" in 1982.

I am so thankful that you created this website! I too have a love for this great town of ours. I have many stories of a certain man " Giacomo Palilla". He was my great-grandfather and came into Rural Valley around 1909-1912 (somewhere around that era). Anyway, he was a great man and he did many wonderful things. Such as, deliver food to the people who had the swine flu when it came around in 1919, he got the food from his grocery store " Palilla's Market". - James Kennedy.

What a great sight!!! My great great grandmother was a Stainbrook. I don't have my info right in front of me but I have found her in the 1850 cencus in PA, Warren Co, in Limestone twp, (which is outside of Tidioute). She was living with her Brother John Stainbrook and his wife Susannah Kightlinger, their children and Susannah's brother George. I found John in Margaret Collins Satinbrook's book but there is no mention of my Catherine anywhere. She married James McKean in Limestone twp ( i would have to look fo the exact date, but early 1850's). They had 12 children. My aunt Mildred McKain lived in Seagertown and would visit a lady realtive Stainbrook at the Crawford County Home. I am try to pursue this lead to see who this lady was related to but I have no first name. Thanks for putting together such a great resource.

I was born in Armstrong County on a farm. Our address was Box 50 RFD. Rural Valley. I attended elementary school in NuMine, Junior High in Sagamore and high school in Rural Valley at Shannock Valley. My dad, Edward C. Hartzell was a coal miner and we once moved to Lumstead for a year (1946-47), then back home to the farm again. Another year we moved to Cadogan (1948-49). We once again moved back to the farm and remained there until they built the Keystone dam, the property is now obviously underwater!
I knew quite a few of those listed in your abstract obituaries. Think your site is a wonderful service to us that have lived there and moved away. When I got old enough to join the service I did and spent 3 years in Germany. Came back home to Sagamore for a few months and then the adventurous spirit led me west. Have been in California since 1962. Still have plenty of family in Cowanshannock Township. I have several web sites, but my most visited one is about writer Jack London, titled, The World of Jack London. http://www.jacklondons.net/

Beautiful scanned pictures of the Custeads. You have a real treasure trove.
My line of Custeads were in (West) Virginia in the late 1700's and then moved to Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
They used several spellings of their name, so tracking them down has been tricky, but fun.

I was born and still live in Rural Valley and loved this site. I was searching for family tree info and found it by accident. My maternal grandfather, as well as great-grandfather worked in the coal mines in Yatesboro. I was looking for information on the mines. I was so excited to find something on Yatesboro and Rural Valley. Do you know any more about the early newspapers. Is there anything out there to research, old articles, pictures, anything? My great-grandfather disappeared somewhere between 1910 and 1915. No one seems to know if he was killed in a mine explosion or just abandoned his family. But I would love to find info on him. Hi Sara:
Your website is a wonderful place to visit. I love your rare old pictures of the Tottens, especially. My husband, Robert H. Winburn is a direct descendant of John Harvey Totten. We have researched the Tottens for about 15 years and have accumulated an extensive collection of Totten genealogy, but few photos. I would like to ask your permission to download the Totten ones in TIF format, if possible.
My Robert's Totten connection comes through his grandmother, Verda Totten Winburn (m. George B. Winburn), her parents, Augustus Totten (m. Amanda (Browning) Dean), his parents John Harvey Totten (m. Julia Knapp). The John Harvey family came to Henry County, Kentucky, by way of Madison, IN, in the early 1800s. The Winburns arrived here a little earlier from eastern Kentucky by way of North Carolina. The two families originally settled in Henry County, near Pendleton, KY.
Robert & I live in Eminence, Henry County, since his retirement in 1990. Most of the Tottens and Winburns have moved on or died out here. We would hope to exchange genealogy on the Totten clan with you. I have not recently reviewed the information we have on the early Tottens, but I recall that tracing the family became difficult prior to old John's move to Orange County from Long Island, NY, if I recall correctly. There were so many males with the same given names in the early Long Island Totten families!
We are going on a short vacation later this week and will return in a few days. I will email you later and maybe we can arrange to exchange the information we have on this group.
Thanks for all your hard work and letting us know about your website. Keep up the good work. I will look forward to getting in touch with you soon.
Regards, Marie Winburn

Miller, Jackson, Armstrong and Totten, from Orange County, NY and Earlys,Heaths, Templetons, Helms from Armstrong County Would you like to exchange information? Sure Comments:
I have been researching a family of Scots/Irish Millers who settled in Orange County, NY about 1745. Andrew Miller's wife was the sister of Alexander Jackson who settled there at the same time. Their daughter Ann Nancy married David Armstrong and I think their son David may be the David that married Mary Totten. (Even though I have seen her tied to a David Miller from RI.) Their children Andrew Jackson Miller and David Armstrong Miller sound too much like my obscure Miller family. Anyway, I am also researching several families in Armstrong County, PA so the Totten tie-in to the Craig family was quite interesting. All my Armstrong County relatives lived around the area of Tidal and Rimer. The Tidal Union Cemetery where most of my ancestors are buried is also full of Craigs so there may be some info we could swap. Thanks for your information.

I am from Gilpin Twp, Armstrong Co, Leechburg, PA. I was born there and my Sober Family dates to the Sober Dariy farm there on the old Schenley Road, now Sober's Road. It was called the Kiski Dariy Fram and was started by my G.G. Grandfather when he bought the old Hill Farm in a tax sale in 1909. I am interested in genealogy of my Sober family which stated in Allengheny Twp on a 325 acre farm deeded in 1798. It is still owned and farm by John Sober to this day. I would enjoy hearing from anyone who cares to respond to this, Lloyd Sober ( lsober@kscable.com )

Caroline Antoinet Totten and Thomas J. Dawson were my husband's GreatGrandparents. I would love to have any information on them and their children. My husband's GRANDFATHER was their son, Charles Sidney Dawson, who was born in 1874, or so I was told. He died very young in a mining accident in WV. My Father-in-law, Kenneth Dawson, also, died young...so we don't have very much information about the family.

I am searching for the ancestors of Fred B. Stewart. He was married to Florence Ruth Bull. They had 5 children all born in Lee County, Ft. Madison Ia. Fred B. was born August 26, 1859 and died Nov. 12, 1912. Florence Ruth Bull was born in 1868 and died in 1931. Fred B's father to the best of my knowledge was an Alexander Stewart, married to Mary A. Marsh. That is all the information I have been able to find on them--no birth date or death date or marriage date. Any help you can be would be greatly appreciated
Also need ancestors of George W. Short who married Nancy A. Miller. They are buried in Greene Co. Iowa. George was a Civil War Veteran and was on a pension until his death in 1919, I believe. They had 3 children--Julia Adella, Ed, and F.Earl. I would like to trace these generations back a little further, especially the Stewarts if possible. HELP.
Thank you

My great, great grandmother Catherine Daugherty was born 24 July 1802, married Boniface Cost 20 February 1838, and died 20 July 1881 in Westmoreland County. I have been unable to identify her place of birth or her parents. The second Daugherty line is a great grandmother Mary Magdalene Daugherty, who according to her death certificate indicated her birth in Westmoreland County in 1861. She married Harrison Alexander Grigsby in Perry County, Ohio in 1885, and died in 1930. I have not had any luck in finding anything of her background. If you could help, that would be great. Sara--
I say possibly because I have absolutly NO leads on my fathers family from western PA. (CRAWFORD CO - Names above).
The reason you came into the picture is that my father and grandfather frequently spoke of "Cousin Camille". Her married name was Stewart. Unfortunatly that is all I know. She was PROBABLY born around the 1880's and died in the 1970's (died in Florida) My Grand father , Thomas Morris Fountaine, was an only child, and the above names, my grandmothers maiden name and his mother's maiden name, are IT! What makes this even MORE agonizing is that since I began doing family genology about seven years ago I have developed abeautiful ten generation tree for my mothers side
but my cousins on Dad's side I think have stopped speaking to me!! They think I havent tried hard enough!! (mostly joking!)But seriously -- it is the worst "brick wall" and I am temped to tell the cousins to just do it themselves. I doubt if you have anything --just thought I would try!! Thanks for listening! Mary Beth Fountaine Wagner
