My mom was born and raised in Texaskana near the Richmond Rd area. Until recently I didn't have much information at all on her family. I've been searching Ancestry.com and came across some Tanners, Taylors and Williams and they all connected!! Needless to say I was very excited. From what I can tell William A. Williams and his wife Martha Collett Williams were the first to come to the Bowie/Titus area of Texas. They were my great-great grandparents on my grandmothers side of the family. They originally lived in North Carolina and made their way to Texas. I've located burial information at Liberty Hill Cemetery and Moores Chapel Cemetery on the Tanners, Taylors and Williams. I want to visit this area as soon as possible. I live in Dallas so it's not that far away. I'm so glad I found your website as I never knew such a thing existed. I look forward to visiting the area. Keep this site going - it's wonderful!

Through two different avenues I was directed to two different members for help. At the time I didn't realize that they were members of the society. Just two names that I was told that could help me. Boy were they ever right.
Doris Lindblad was very kind and did a great deal of looking both on the net and in local records and was able to extend my knowledge of my family in the Texarkana area, for which I will always be greatful.
Carolyn McGee was another name I was given and replyed quickly to my request for help in obtaining an obit.
Thank you both and thank goodness I finaly came to realize that they were both members of Texarkana Gen Society.
What a great job you all do.

This is a great web site. My husband just spent 4-5 hours in the Bowie County Courthouse and found some information on his ancestors. You have the marraige documents for his great grandfather and great grandmother. There is still confusion about this person due to records not giving whole names. There was also a Charley Henry Smith at the same time in Bowie County. Records for their son, Charles Brandon Smith, seem to be non existent. But this web site has helped a great deal. Thanks for all your work.

I love your site.
It allows me to connect with my African-American roots.
Although my grandparents decided to move to Indiana after
my grandfather returned from the war in 1945. My grandmother
never let us forget,"Texarkana" is home.
I grew-up looking at the images of my ancestors. They were talked about as if they were still alive. My grandmother, the oldest living member of her family is very ill now and I am her caring for her. She is so intrigued with the daily stories I bring her, from your web site and ANCESTRY.COM, about the "family" based on information she has shared with me for over 28 years.
The Mosley and Motley family images; the people that they were, and still are, is important to the 8th generation hearing of their stories for the first time. Your web site helps me share such stories.
I also use my family history to inspire my daughter and children in the Gary, Indiana Community Schools to search their pass;set their life path; and leave a mark on the future. Fore without history, there is no future.
Thank you for keeping history and Texarkana alive.
Sincerely
Angela Williams

She was born and raised in Texarkana, Arkansas, but moved to Gary, Indiana as a very young WWII veterans spouse. She raised her children to never forget our African American family in Arkansas and Texas. Texarkana has always been home to me,although I was born and raised in Gary, becasue my Grandmoter has kept seven(7) generations of our family alive. Thank you so much for all the hard work you have generated to the public!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a short response to the posting from Mr. Henry Turner. The Baker/McCurry/Wamba Cemetery has been online on this website since Aug 2003. I was unaware that the Cemetery has been officially designated as a Historical Cemetery as yet since the Affidavit was only filed in the county courthouse about a week ago. It is my understanding that the Certificate has not yet been issued by the Texas Historical Commission. Thank you for your interest in the cemeteries in this area.

Recently I visited the cemtery, what a magnificent change in the grounds. I just wanted to say Kudos to whomever has accomplished such a great feat!!! I was so impressed that I began researching some background information on the cemetery and have learned that it was recognized as a historical site by the Texas Historical Commission in April!! I checked this web site and I did not see any information on this cemetery! Please add this information to your website!

The Gullatts are my husband's family. We will be visiting your city in August for the primary purpose of geneology research. We're hoping to find out information about Andrew Gullatt and his ancestors. However I do have a question. Do you have information regarding the location of cemetaries where blacks may have been buried prior to 1920? Additionally does Texarkana have city directories available prior to 1920?

My GG grandfather A.V. McDaniel and his wife Margaret Mary McKee came to Texarkana abt. 1889 from Lincoln Co. Tenn. My guess is that he was looking for a new start after the Civil War. It appears that he may have been on the "wrong" side of the Civil War. Tennessee was a divided state. I can find no record of his involvement with the Confederacy. He was not a Quaker. I find that in the Bowie Co. forum that there is to this day much sentiment pertaining to this issue. I have been unable to find out where either A.V. or his wife may be buried in Bowie Co., but I know they were. My Great grandparents Napoleon Henry and Martha Virginia Smith are buried in Bowie Co. My grandfather, Thomas Stanley McDaniel Sr. was born in Red Water (?), Bowie Co. in 1884. He went back to Tennessee and then back to Texas. My Roots in Bowie Co. go back three generations. I do plan on visiting.

I need more info about my ggrandfather, W. H. Adams, but don't know where to look. The family came from Alabama in 1866 to Cass Co., then moved to Bowie Co. (unknown date) I would appreciate knowing how to trace them. My grandfather, William Monroe Adams, son of W. H. Adams, had a brother, Andrew Jackson Adams, listed in your unclaimed marriage certificates. I claim it. Please let me know what info you need to certify my relationship to him.

Your site is inviting and pleasant to view. Could you add a surname list to your site, or maybe I missed it as I entered through Rootsweb. I am researching the Menasco/Manasco and Hardy surnames and having easy acces to a list would save us both some time.
