My father was in the 509th durring WW2 and I along with my daughter have been researching the unit. Recently I came accross a series of photographs that my father had and will be scanning them. I noticed the unit photo from Moracco and think I recognize my father in that photo.

Thanks for having this site.

I am looking for members of my brother's unit from 1971-1973. His name is Martin "Mickey" Livingstone. He passed away last week and I am hoping to connect with members of his unit and ask for any stories about my brother that they might be able to share with me and my family.

What I have about him is that he was in Co A 2nd Bn 509th Inf USAREUR in Germany and then in Italy (1972-1973). During this tour of duty he was also with Co A 1st Bn 509th Inf (ABCT) USAREUR-Italy. He was sent home in October of 1973 after become sick with diabetes.

It would be great if there are any members of his unit still around who could send me any stories about my brother that they might remember. He loved the army, didn't really like heights so I'm not sure why he was in the Airborne Class 72-3 but he liked the challenged. He often said that because he was the smallest in his platoon, he ended up with the heaviest gun and pack. We found his badge for parachutists and he has one star in the parachute which I've learned means he had one combat jump before he got sick.

Thank you for your time.
His oldest sister,
Kathleen Livingstone

Comments:
Must make an historical correction to your 82nd Abn history in re: WWII operations. First, when referring to the division as a whole do not reference the soldiers generally as paratroopers. Only about one-half the men were line paratroopers. In addition to the 325th Glider Infantry Regimen, the 319th Field Artillery Btn, the 80th AA btn were gliderborne troops. Many other units were seaborne. In fact from 1943 to 1946, the combat soldier of the 82nd Spent more time aboard ship than in the air.
Secondly, when you mention the initial invasions of Sicily and Italy, the dates you give refer to to the airborne components only and I do not believe gliders were used at all in Sicily or Italy by the 82nd. The correct date for the Invasion of Italy would be Sept 10th, 1943. A number of elements of the 82nd Abn left Tunisia by landing cradft as part of Mark Clark's Fifth Army. The 80th AA - Batteries A, B nad C, the 307th Engineers, F Compnay of the 504th PIR and the medical detachment of the division were attached to Darby's Rangers, which assaulted the Maiori beach on the 9th of September, securing the town and pushing forward to seize the important high ground and crossroad of Chiunzi Pass, representing the far left flank of the Fifth Army. The aforementioned units of the 82nd came ashore on the 10th, relieving the Rangers of outpost duty and security of the town of Maiori as well as relieving their medics. Units of the 80th AA patrolled the left and right flank of the Rangers and one platoon of Battery F provided .50 cal MG plunging fire in support of the Rangers. The Rangers and these 82nd Abn units were given a President Unit Citation. An interesting sidelight is that the first 82nd Abn paratroopers to land in Italy came in by landing craft, not C-47s, three days ahead of the Salerno operation.

Great site. The 509th History contains an error. No company left Italy in the 70's to return to the US to serve as the Pathfinder Company at Rucker..C Co stayed in Italy until the unit was redisignated the 4th 325..The C Co in Italy was C Co 1st Bn 509th Inf (Airborne Battalion Combat Team) and the company at Rucker was C Co (Airborne) 509th Inf. I served in the 509th in Italy during the time Charlie Co suppossedly left, they didn't. I also served in Europe with a former Cdr of the company at Rucker. I know this will most likely will not effect the site, but believe me it needs to be..No company left Italy to go to Rucker, I was there..My best to you..it's a great site..

Rangers have served ever since World War II. You should have to earn the Beret. When I go to Ranger training I want to earn the Beret, I dont want to disgrace any Rangers by wearing something I didn't earn.
