Hi Nicole, my name is Margo Crowther. I am granddaughter to Ida Mae Sober Woodin. My father was Robert G. Woodin. I was so excited to see this information. I was reading that the info you have is mostly from my grandmother's family tree that she wrote! I currently own and live in the house Ida's father and mother had bought when they moved from Nebraska to Halfmoon, NY, and where my grandmother continued to live after she married my grandfather, Peter F. Woodin.
Feel free to contact me. Thanks, Margo

We stopped by on numerous occasions when visiting my grandmother (Fannie Burmood) and aunt (Ethel Burmood Armitage) in Greeley, Co. Particularly since Charles and Pearl Burmood lived in Kersey and had work done at Minerva's and Melvin's (? hope I got his name right) garage. I vaguely recall that we heard about a daughter who was doing some type of mission work? - but it's been 50 years - so I'm not positive. Minerva's dad was my grandfather's brother - and I think (not positive about this either) that he may have married my Aunt Blanche Batterson's sister????? I'm a little hazy on some of this. Thank you so much for the wonderful information you have on Stephen Mahoney and his family. I was very excited to see you found the family plot and have pictures. I doubt I'll be getting back to Iowa very soon. My mother's father was Curtis Guiles Mahoney, son of Stephen Charles, son of Benjamin Franklin, son of Stephen Mahoney III who was born in 1809. She is going to be excited when I show her this information. Her family is from Albion, Idaho. Again thank you!

My father is John Seeley Mahoney born 1920 Grandfather John Thomas Mahoney born 1856 Great Grandfather Stephen Mahoney. I came into this world in 1972. I tell people I'm not to far from swinging in the trees and dragging my knuckles Ha Ha! Anyway I see you have a transcript of Great Grandpas will I believe I have an original of that. I also have all of the deeds to every piece of land my grandpa purchased. I also have one deed for property in Maryland need to look at it more carefully to see if it pertains to Great Great Grandpa or not. I also have a letter from an old tracker and buffalo hunter Buckskin Johnny Spalding that I believe made part of the trip from Iowa to Wyoming with my grandpa. It speaks of his life long love of 56 years and how they finally found each other good stuff if you ask me. Well thanks for this site and all the great info. Loren

The earliest Mahoney's I have found coming into Maryland are Jeanne, Mall, and Teag. My ancestors probably include John Smith Mahoney, Edward, Samuel, Dennis, and Timothy Mahoney (in order from 1785 back to 1650-60). From 1785 onward, I have documented proof of John Smith Mahoney to Benjamin and Theresa Newton and their children to present. Movement route was St Mary's County through the Maryland counties to Georgetown D.C. to Old Point Comfort/Portsmouth/ Norfolk; Scottsville; Richmond; now in Northern VA.

As near as I can tell from comparing your research and mine, William and Elizabeth Spire were my great-great-great-grandparents. Their granddaughter Elizabeth Ann, was my great grandmother. According to a newspaper article from 1938 about her and her husband celebrating their 60th anniversary, she was born on April 15, 1862. It goes on to say that her parents and all five children immigrated to America, and landed in New York on March 1, 1875, with Elizabeth Ann making her home with her cousin, Richard Spire.
Anyway, she married John Herrick Alley on December 24, 1878, in Sheridan and later moved to Grinnell. The had five children: Arthur (my grandfather), Ernest, Earle, and two daughters, Elsie and Pearl, who both died during the diphtheria epidemic of February, 1894. John Herrick Alley died in Grinnell on February 7, 1949, and Elizabeth died in Grinnell on October 21, 1946.

I enjoyed the GOOD work of this website.
Once one gets 'hoked on genealogy' it is hard to give it up.
I found something you might want to Browse..the origin of surname BROWN came about for England in 1066, as land was granted from the battle of Hastings winners under Wm the Conqueror, who became King of England..one soilder was a FrenchMan..the website houseofnames will give you the data as well as the coat of arms for Brown's. it includes the data which one can buy framed or combined with 'martial tie of two surnames and the history of the Distinguished surname Brown plus what ever. the French Man was Le Buen==
use http://www.houseofnames.com to find information.
The various spelling include Boas or Boaz which an ancestor Rev. John Jones married.
use Lona Elizabeth Fussell for search in rootsweb and then her mother Janet Jackson-Jones and her motherElizabeth Jones=(grandmother was Rosanna Boaz) Jackson and her mother Elizar Burrell Brown, and Browns back to the Oakland Plantation of NC.(you can find oakland plantation owner General Thomas Brown, son of George Brown and Lucy Bright Brown, the brother John of the General married the sister of William Jones, father of John Wm. Jones who wed Boaz and whose son John Gabriel Jones wed MDavis but by Elizar BB had Elizabeth Jones who wed JB Jackson, and d. Janet wed GW Fussell, had one child Lona E. Fussell and she wed Weaver V. Brown, and one child of their's is me..Pauline Jane Brown, b. 1934, wed Dr. Cesar J. Larach of Honduras and we have four children and 6 grandchildren. Cesar passed away on Sept 8th, 2005. his mother June 22,2005 and so I was looking for e-mail to notify sonme family to document same. however the Jo Martin one has the information..follow up the rootsweb. Lona E. Fussell line to living Brown, wed Larach and there it is.
the coat of arms of Brown is Royal Blue and Gold. the one for Fussell is like the red cross..came also from Fuss of 1066 Battle of Hastings soilder under Wm the conqueror.
Larch English came from 1066 but was a tree(timber used for outer coffins for Pharoahs) in Egypt on the upper nile a city Lagash of ancient times. in Iraz were 3 cities with different spelling. falling under volcano ash in the fall of Pomphii..sp??
The Araj spelling in same as Larach, since coming from Jordan arabs, the language is written back to front..and no p exists in the alphabet..the J is changed to H when in arabic..as John is Jon or Juan =Hanna feminine Jane =Hannah =(Emilia is Jamilia in Arabic.)
Hope you enjoy this suggestion.
regards

I am a family historian based in London, England and came across the Spire site by chance. To my shame I haven't traced my own family tree very far, but my great-great-grandfather, George Spire, was married in Shoreditch, London in 1846. He was born in Chalford, Gloucestershire about 1824. His father was Robert Spire, and George had a brother, Henry, born c. 1828, who left Gloucestershire about the same time as George, but to settle in York in the north of England. I think George and Henry were contemporary to the Spires you mention. I understand that the local parish provided funds for young men to emigrate and some, I suppose, decided to go to the big cities in England to seek work.
I have photographs of George's son, Arthur and his son, Robert, my grandfather.
Kind Regards,
Rosalie Spire.

I was looking for information about my great great grandparents John and Jane Smiley Brown. A couple of things I learned from your sight were approximate birth years for John and Jane, and that Jane was born in Ireland.
One thing I have that you might be interested in is a faded, yellowed piece of paper with my great great aunt's
(Joanna Brown Dimit) obituary typed on it.
"Mrs. Joanna Brown Dimit was born in Ontario, Canada,
July 18, 1852, and died in Grinnell(Iowa) on Saturday, Jan. 27, 1940, at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 9 days.
At the age of eight, she, together with her parents, five sisters and one brother moved to Tama County, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood."
I also have a genealogy book that says that my great grandmother, Christina Brown Dimit was born in Clinton County, Iowa 8/3/1858. The book also says that Joanna was born in Canada. By the way, Joanna and Christina married brothers. Thanks for your work and enjoy your search.

This is the most awesome family-genealogical site that I have seen in my 7 years of researching! Kudos to you, Nicole!! You and "Cindy" could be millionaires if this field paid well... but we know we're not in it for the money. I am supposed to be a cousin of Abolitionist John Brown, and thought I had it all documented through the Loomis and Todd families, but have now reached a roadblock. If anyone reads this from the Wilson family, there are Wilsons mentioned in the book "Scattered People" by Professor Gerald McFarland that might help in this maze. I also think that I'm related to the McMullens in Florida, but I don't think that line connects to the Browns. Thanks & Happy Hunting, Everyone! DC

I found your site on Rootsweb. AWESOME website. I can observe all the countless hours you have donated to your family history. My Father passed away about 2 years ago, which started my hunt for our family history. We do not know very much about my Father's side of the family. His father Floyd Matteson passed away in the 70's. My brother and I remembered he was from Fairmont Ne, and I found the family Bible which also showed his birthplace. I found a lot of family buried in Fairmont Cemetery. My Great Grandmother was Mertie Walters Matteson. She passed away in 1918 and I do not know anything about her. My Grandfather never mention her, however, my Grandfather passed away when I was young. She passed away when he was a teenager.
Mertle E. Walters was the Daughter on J.W. and Fidelia Walters. She was born in Geneva NE 1877. Her father and mother are buried in Fairmont. Her Grandfather was Charles E. Walters. I show Charles E. Walters Born: November 10 1838 Bureau Co., IL Died March 21, 1921 Idaho. I think he married Fidelia in 1862 and married Mattie Brubaker in 1888. The next part of the reference is: Jennie Dora MCCashland, Mrs. Charles E. daughter of John & bell(Walters)DeBoer Born: 1882 Cornell Il Died 1964. I do not understand this reference.
Any way this is my beginning. If you have any reference or anyone I may speak to, who knew my side of the family it would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Teresa Matteson

Weird, but now I know the true meaning of "Kissing-Cousins". Thank you Nicole for all of your hard work and research, it is much appreciated. You have done a great job, Nicole. You are to be commended! It is very interesting. I think I have or have seen pictures of the lake at Shelton and can remember my mother telling about the parties they attended at the old Meisner home. My Aunt Hazel Reed Templin was born in the old Opera House in Shelton and I am sure my Grandfather Reed, Editor of the Shelton Clipper wrote many of the flowering obituaries printed in the 1888 and till his death in 1912, when my mother was 12. Hazel and her Husband Ed Templin moved back to Shelton from Omaha to help run the paper. Hazel did all the proofreading of the paper before it was published and many a time she was proofreading at the table when visiting her. My Uncle, Cliff Reed, taught me to run the old linotype machine which set type with the molten lead. I see quite a few typographical mistakes in the computer generated newspapers and spelling bloopers today! I am glad you liked the old, old, old, picture I sent of Mom's family. I would rather think it looks like The Great Gatsby, than what Troy thought. Anyway, this enough meandering for the day! With love, Grandma Pat.

I visited the cemetery at Shelton, Nebraska about 15 (?) years ago. My husband, a descendant of Alexander Sober and his wife, Mary Foy, through their daughter, Mary Ann Sober Hummel. We visited with an elderly lady who was a widow of a Sober. I had also corresponded with Ida Woodin and her nephew, Wayne Godfrey. I have an original photo of Alexander Sober and his wife, Mary Foy, the same one you have posted. Did someone give you the approximate date? I have often wondered about when it was taken. I had numerous copies I shared and posted one on the Northumberland County, Pa. website. When my husband's Mother died, we were given the original photo, which we treasure. My Mother-in-law was named for Mary Foy's Mother, Osila Wolverton Foy. The form of the name she had was, Osie Foy Hummel Hetzel. Surprisingly, I later found another Foy descendant who was also named for Osila.
