I have been searching for sometime looking for information on my great grandmother. We know little about her. Her name was Anna Christine Ewald (or Ewalt) I found her listed in "Germans to America, 1875-1888".
Her last residence is listed as Foehr. Ship's Name: Westphalia Date of Arrival: Oct. 05, 1885.

I'd love to connect with anyone who knows anything about this line.

Valter Jensen born 1836, Caroline Nicholson born 1836; they married in the spring & came to the USA in 1865. Her father was Oluf Nicholson, her mother may have been Kaeske Peterson, they may have been from Sweden. At least 4 of us have been researching & the trail ends with Oluf & Caroline Jensen.

My mother's mother's mother was from Insel Föhr. She came in 1874 to Ohio. Another brother came with her. She had additionally three brothers who came slightly earlier, but remained in Brooklyn, NY. Their name was Davids (or alternately, Davidsen). They were from Boldixum. Attended St. Nicholai Kirche. One sister remained on the island. Her married name was Debora Davids Brodersen.

My father and I visited Foehr in 1997 and found much information at the church and the Ferring Stiftung. There are also many stories about their father, Nahmen Eschels.
Is there anybody out there who knows the Iowa branch, or more about the early Eschels?

I visited this site 10 years ago, but haven’t been back until now. My, it certainly has grown into a wonderful resource! I have visited Foehr twice since then and had a certain amount of research success, as follows:
My paternal grandmother Marie Dorothea Cordes (1884-1962) was born in Nieblum on Sept 30, 1884. Her parents were Hermann Anton Cordes (1854-1928) born April 1 1854 in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, and Frederika Marie Nuernberger (1853-1924) born Oct 1, 1853 in Nieblum. My grandmother accompanied her mother from Hamburg to the USA in 1895, via Ellis Island, to Sacramento, CA, and subsequently to Southern California. They were following to reunite with Hermann, who had emigrated some years earlier. I know almost nothing about Hermann’s origins, but thanks to Lorenz Braren’s wonderful 4-volume compilation of church records from St. Laurentii (Geschlecter-Reihen St. Laurentii-Foehr, a copy of which I was able to purchase in the BuBu bookstore in Wyk on one of my visits) I have been able to trace 7 generations of Frederika’s lineage through her mother, Marie Elisabeth Bohn (1823-1892) who was born Dec 17, 1823 in Hedehusum, and died Sept 5, 1892 in Nieblum, ultimately to Peter Juergens (1637-1719) born and died in Hedehusum and Angert Drefsen (1638-1719) also born and died in Hedehusum.
I would love to hear from anyone with a genealogical connection to any of the above individuals, and will be glad to supply the complete lineage information I have upon request. I also have photographs of my grandmother, great grandparents and great-great grandmother. My complete paternal-line family tree (Benefiel-Cordes family Tree) is a public tree on Ancestry.com.

My wife's family immigrated from Fohr to the United States and it has been a challenge to find family records prior to their arrival in 1938.

We are very interested in correspondng with anyone regarding the Gliesmann family of Wyk auf Fohr. My wife's father was Herbert Siegfried Gliesmann, born in Wyk in 1912. Herbert's father was Theodore Heinrich Gliesmann, born of Wyk in 1890, who married Paula Broders. We believe Theodore and Paula are buried on Fohr.

Hello,
Many of you are asking about the Key for the Pedigrees. I believe it is the church numbers that are confusing. The first three letters refer to the church. Then the numbers refer to the genealogy. For example, consider Kapitan Simon Nahmen Paulsen GRJ 2317, 242 211 2. The 2317 is oldest ancestor known in his line. Each number there after is the order of the children born. So Simon was the second child of a father who was the 1st child of a father who was the 1st child of a father who was the 2nd child of a father who was the 2nd child of a father who was the 4th child of a father who was the 2nd child of the oldest known ancestor. If the church number says pre GRJ, then it is believed that the person is a more distant ancestor than the base. It is a nice way of keeping track of who is related to who and in what order. Of course it is only as good as the record keepers. Many of you find errors in that record. I hope this helps!

I compare it against the material I found in the book "Geschlechter-Reihen St. Laurentil-Fohr" by von Lorenz Braren which a book of names from church records on Fohr. Does the above symbol (number) tie with the book I just menmtioned.?? Hark

I'm an Arfsten and went to Fohr approximately 20 years ago when I was 25 years old and followed my Step Grandfather's directions. Just tell them your an Arfsten, and that is exactly what I did. It took a few phone calls and they found a few Arfstens and I had a terrific time.

I'm now the father of three terrific girls, Sarah 12, Carly 11 and Julia 9. My wife, Lindsay Arfsten, and I are planning a two week tour of Europe and I would like to show my family the island and stay at a great place for a few days. I started to google and found a hotel, etc. Still putting the plan together and plan to go when school is out in June 2010 for about three weeks.

Maybe we can connect with some Arfsten's while we are over there. I know my father always spoke of Anke and I went to a Dairy farm that was fun and not sure if it is still operated by Arfstens.

I had "Tea Punch" with one of my grandfathers friends and it seems like there was a bird santuary there.

My father, Arfst J. Arfsten passed a few years ago and my mother Barbara Arfsten passed last year. My brother is Craig Arfsten at 52 and my sister Janice (Arfsten) Campbell is 51. I'm 45 and my brother has two kids Kyle Arfsten at 19 and Kimberly at 14. My sister has three kids, two boys Eric at 14, Sean at 12 and Christina at 9.

Thank you for putting this together and I should take a longer look and provide some additional information.

Thank you,

Scott Arfsten

My husband's maternal grandparents were from Wyk, but I did not see their surname listed (Levsen). We have the following from family notes: Edward Anton Levsen b.1838, married Martha Huck. Their children were August, Bertha, Johanna, Pauline, Edward, Martin, Therese, and Martha. Pauline and Martin died in Germany, Edward Jr. in Chicago. The rest ended up in Wisconsin, mostly between Sheboygan and Milwaukee. My husband is the great-grandson of August, who married a woman named Anna Ingversen (or Ingwersen?). I'm not sure about the spelling.

We eat the food and celebrate certain customs of the place we have chosen. I picked the island of Fohr, and the exchange student will be helping me. However, he is not really a good cook, and I cannot find any recipes from the area...can anyone help me?

My ggrandparents, Sophie Christina Jessen [1849-1886] and August Heinrich Siems [1846-1932] emigrated to Louisana in the U.S. in 1868 according to census records. They, and many of their relatives listed (Schleswig/Holstein) Denmark/Germany as their place of birth in various records. There is a possible relative in the Lake Charles, LA area, Martin H. Jessen [1853-1934], who was born on and returned to the Island of Foehr for his bride, Marie M. Andresen [1861-1955] in 1884. Two of his children were named Sophie C. and Martin Henry Jessen--repeating family names.
My grandmother, Mary Doretta Siems/Simms, lived with her uncle and aunt, N. Henry [1853-1895] and Mina C. [1848-1913] Jessen, both born in Schleswig/Holstein, after her mother's death and her father's moving to Ashland, KY. Her grandmother's name was Doretta Jessen [?1828- ], with no record of her grandfather's ever coming to the U.S. Family legend says that she came here with 12 children, but I have found no verification for Peter, Charles, or Johanna, her youngest daughter. No other names were mentioned.
Another of her uncles, Julius Jessen [c1855-bef1895], married Christine Ann Iwers [1867- ], of Schlewwig/Holstein, daughter of Herns [1823- ] and Cathrina [1835- ] Iwers. Julius and Christine's children, my grandmother's first cousins, were Alice Henrietta Jessen [1886-1962]; Charles Julius Jessen [1888-1963]; and Viola Jessen [1889- ] all born in Iberville Parish, LA.
An aunt, Mary Jessen [1856-1888], also born in Schleswig/Holstein, married Charles William Collette [1844-1895] in Baton Rouge, LA in 1878.
The Jessen's have been a brick wall for 30 years; I'm hoping that the Island of Foehr connection might shed some light on this elusive line.
Pat

My great grandfather was Paul Christian Paulsen...(I think I got that name right) He owned the Paulsen Guest House, (Gast Haus?)which at one time was a historical place...a hotel and tavern...another ancestor supposedly built a lighthouse on the island and operated livesaving boats for shipwrecks. Another ancestor started the "Paulsen School for Boys", at least that's the family legend...Can anyone tell me if these places are still there or if I have any relatives on the island. There are supposedly graves in a church going back to 1607. There was a fire before that and records were lost, but my family supposedly was a very early inhabitant of the island. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi there! Fantastic website. I've been looking into my family history, looking through old family slides etc. The Island of Fohr looks truly like paradise on earth and I am dying to go for a visit and visit the home of my fathers.

This is my family line:

Hans Friedrich Schmidt, Magdalena Hedwig Bassau / Basau
Nicolaus Christian Schmidt, Dorothea Maria Niehuus
Hinrich Georg Schmidt, Christina Margaretha Hinsch
Nicolaus Wilhelm Schmidt, Margaret Breen
William Schmidt, Emily Harriet Leonhard
Marion Arlene Schmidt
Samuel Longley (me!)

Also when I looked at "Many Pictures from the Island Of Foehr 1/2/2002 Submitted by Helene Lorenzen and Marret Kauffner", on the very first page is a picture, captioned "A Pastor" ... I have 2 hard copies of this picture. I am guessing that it is Nicolaus Christian Schmidt, pastor of St Laurentii (St Lawrence). I did not know that it was a picture of a pastor and that helps fit the puzzle pieces together.
<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ccho/Cards/one/pic9.htm>

Lastly, to anyone who wants an easy way to visit the island from your armchair, go to google maps and search for "Fohr Germany", then click on the link "More photos".

I will be overjoyed to hear from any relatives!
(You'll need to remove the spaces etc from my email address above)

My brother googled "Fohr, Lorenzen" He went for the maps.
I went for the Genealogy site.
I've been following family hx. on Ancestry for a year, and stuck for lack of further information to our German Roots.
On 'web family cards' I was able to break through to our German Ancestry which we already knew should lead to the Island of Fohr. Great site. Thank you, and thanks to others who did the work I am just finding.

I will continue to look for more about certain ancestors:
Volkert Lorenzen b. 19 Aug 1780, d. 09 Jul. 1855
Lorenz Dedrich Lorenzen b. 29 Jul 1815, d. 24 Sep 1870
These men are our direct ancestors.

We are desc. of [the son of Lorenz Diedrich Lorenzen], Ocke Lorenzen b. Nov 1858 on Fohr, family lived in Utersum about 1937. Ocke Lorenzen emigrated to Clinton, Iowa in 1875. He Died in 1927 in Dubuque, Iowa, USA
We know of his brothers, Volkert and Boy Lorenzen who were lost at sea on the Mary Celeste in Nov-Dec 1872.
We have a letter written by Ocke Lorenzen prior to his death in 1927. It's addressed to a magazine, "Saturday Evening Post" I think, and in the letter he vigorously defends his brothers' [Volkert and Boy] against speculation of Mutiny as cause of abandonment of the "Mary Celeste".

We would like any information about the FAMILIES of Volkert Lorenzen [1780-1855],
Lorenz Diedrich Lorenzen [1815-1870]
also about other children of Lorenz D. Lorenzen and Karoline Christine Knudsen
They would be: Caroline L., Cornelius, Elena, Ingke, Richardine, Volkert, Boy, Tradje.

I can offer information about Ocke Lorenzen and his Descendents.

Looking for husband's ancestors. We know that brothers Conrad Jensen and Henry Jenson came to US and settled in Massachusetts. Conrad was born 3/19/1849 (?) and Henry 5/15/1851 (?). Conrad received his passport 3/21/1873 and his citizenship 3/29/1873 Conrad was an inventor or a specific multi purpose wood plane (patented) and a commputerized scale (currently used in supermarkets today). Their parents are Jan Simon Jensen and Kike (Knutenen) Jensen. Conrad married Ella Gertrude (smith) in the US on 5/15/1875. He tragically died-hit by a train at age 29. His wife then married his brother Henry on7/20/1926 in US (Massachusetts). We hear from family that they lived on the Isle of Fohr off the coast of Denmark yet the US census reports show Denmark, Germany and Schleswig-Prussia as place of birth. I'm confused! I don't have any further info but would love to hear from anyone who may. Thank you for any help you can give!

My maiden name is Heinsen. My great grandfather George Arthur Heinsen came here as a boy with his older sisters and brothers-in-law (Jensen) from Foehr and settled with them in Hayward. He returned as a young man and married Jenny Knudsen from Oevenum, who followed him back to the US. They settled in Monterey County (Lockwood), California. The info on the website is inaccurate; my great grandfather died when he was hit by a car...not my great grandmother. I have been to Foehr twice; you wonder--how could they ever leave? It is so pretty there. The second time I went my German had deserted me, so I could not locate any relatives still on the island. I would like to go back with someone who speaks good German to try to connect with relatives (because I know some are still there).

I have written before. My grandparents were from Fohr and 3 of their 6 children were born there and all were raised there. I would like to bring my grown children back for a reunion of sorts and to show them their history in 2 two years. How can I find accomodations? perhaps a small house or cottage to rent since there will be 6-8 addults and at least one child.
Also, my father, Oluf Jacobs, is quite ill and close to death. He loved Fohr and I am wondering how to find out about having him (his ashes) buried in the church yard with my great grandparents. Is there anyone (I don't speak German well or Friesen) who can tell me how to determine if a plot is available and how one goes about making those arrangements.
Thank you,
Judy Jacobs Fauntleroy

Looks liked a great deal of research was needed to compile your website.

My great grandparents are from Fohr. August Jensen was born in Denmark in 1866 and moved to Fohr where I assume, but don't know, he met his wife Gardina Rieverts (not the same person listed on Carol's website). They had 5 children(all born on the island) George, Fridst, Broder (born in 1902), Martha and Alfred (murdered on the island by the Nazis during WWII because he did not believe in their cause). George, Fridst, Broder and Martha all left the island. My dad, August Jensen, was later born on the island in 1927 while his parents were visiting rom Denmark.

I noticed a Broder Rieverts mentioned. Perhaps my grandfather was named after him.

Does anyone recognize these names?

I was wondering if anyone has had any of it translated into English as I'd love to learn more of the history.

The photos submitted by Helen Lorenzen could have come out of my family albumn. My father William Frederick Meyn 86 and his brother Henry (Heinrich) John (Johanne) Meyn 92 are still living here in Florida. They are the sons of Christine Schmidt and Claus Meyn. My Brother William Frederick Meyn Jr. worked at the fishing station in East Moriches while attending high school helping Al and Greta Lassen and the crew run the station.

I am trying to put together a journel of the family based upon stories my father and his brother have told me. Dates and facts may be off or elaborated on. Memory and age play tricks, but the sentiment is there. I will send a website link when I get to a point where it may be of interest.

Please e-mail if you like.

According to Uncle Henry's family tree record Helene Dorothea Schmidt marrie Harold Henningsen. Helene was my Grandmother Christina's sister.I remember "tante" Erna, Ilse & Anna, Helen and Greta were younger. All the menfolk were gone by the time except for Alfred Lassen Jr.

My paternal grandparents names are Peters, Penner and Golbek (also spelled Goldbeck and Golbeck). They were Mennonite or followed Mennonite families in migration to Prussia, then Southern Russia (Volga River area), then to Canada and USA. Background information indicated they could be Frisian or Flemish Mennonite. My information is relatively accurate going back to 1770 but nothing further. Anyone recognize these names?

This is so amazing!! My mother is Klara Arfsten and she is the daughter of Friedrich and Inna Arfsten of Klintum, Fohr. Her brother Jacob (Jobe) and her sister Friede and their families still live there. My father (from Chemnitz area) came to the island after the war and met and married my mother there. They immigrated to America in 1951 and settled in Queens, NY. My mom now lives in NJ. I've been to the island in 1958, 1972 and in 1998 and have regular contact with all the relatives there. I was raised speaking Friesisch - the language of the island. I only learned to speak English when I started school. I would love to hear from anyone else who has this ancestry!

*Currently researching Nicholas William Larson, my paternal great-grandfather.
*He was a mid-19th century immigrant from Denmark, and a ship-captain who sailed and settled around the Great Lakes region of the United States.
*Family legend says that he once ran a ship aground, and now that site is named "Larson's Landing". I have yet to find proof of this lore, however. But it makes a good story. :-)
*Our family tree comes to a dead-end at this ancestor, and we would therefore appreciate any information on him. The limited information we have for Nicholas William Larson is this:
*He was born on the island of Fohr, Denmark, (now governed by Germany), on July 25, 1844.
*He moved to America around 1860, first living and working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
*He married Katherine (Catherine?) Weidinger (Viedinger?) in 1885, probably in Buffalo, NY, where they lived until their deaths -- his about 1909, hers about 1925.
*They had one son, William Nicholas Larson, my paternal grandfather, born April 25, 1889, in Buffalo, NY.

I've been doing geneology on the Volkerts for 20 years, visited Fohr and Amrum to meet wonderful relatives ( the closest now live on Amrum, Peter Schau and his son Gerhardt and his family, and Peter's brother Karl Schau's 5 children, all descendants of Caroline Volkerts Schau, one of at least 6 siblings who came to the US, but only Caroline returned to Fohr and Amrum). I found relatives all over the US including New York, Petaluma, Sebastopol, Berkeley, San Francisco, Livermore and Little Rock Calif., Oregon, Montana, Arizona, Fallon Nevada and the North Friesian Islands, among others. A terrific man, Herr Mathiessen, in Fohr helped me track our family through St. Nicolai church records back to the 1600's. Eventually, he said the records led back to Denmark. Since he didn't speak or read Danish, he couldn't help us go back any further. I now have a 16 generation chart showing the Volkerts family history, which I have copied and shared with a number of my cousins, including Al Volkerts and Suzie Miller. In addition, I inherited a stack of late 1800's pictures from a great aunt, none of which were identified. I met with relatives all over Calif. and Amrum to identify over 90% of them, copied them and distributed them to my cousins who were interested in their family history. Some day one of us will write a book.

I just read the article "Equipagenmeister of Wrixum and His Double" and realized that Nahmen Arfsten Jr is my direct ancestor. I had received a genealogy from Pastor Helmut Volcker, Kirch St. Laurentii Auf Fohr in 1978, which gave direct line connections, with some additional information as available, such as 4 sons, 2 daughters. This has been the most beautiful and helpful work in my 30 + years of genealogical research, but I am happy to have more of Nahmen's history and his childrens names and information. I had only his wife's name, his father as Arfst, and his son as Arfst Nahmens. This article has added much more information. Thank you so much.My mother's cousin visited the island years ago and said there was much on our family in the museum. I would love to go there and see it all for myself. Suzi

There seems to be an error in the listing for Jan Paul Ketels. Catharina Dorothea Ketels ( born July 22, 1849 ) was the twin sister of my great-grandfather, Jann Paul Ketels (son of Captain Jan Paul Ketels and Tinne Dorothea Jensen ). Their descendents, my cousins, live in the family home on the island of Fohr and this information is easy to confirm.
I have no idea how to go about correcting this information and would appreciate help in doing so. This error omits about five generations of our family, with extensions still in Borgsum, Fohr, and in the United States.

My youngest female cousin who is now married speaks and writes fluent english. However, the older generation knows very little english. I have a male cousin who I am told I look like, I believe his name is Boy Gerrets, but he and I have never met or written (typical men). My great-Grandfather, Jann Paul Ketels (b. July 22,1849 Borgsum, Fohr), was named for his father, Capt. Jan Paul Ketels (b. Sept 27,1810 Borgsum, Fohr) and was the twin brother of Catharina Dorothea Ketels Paulsen (also b. July 22, 1949). His son, my grandfather, Peter Ketels (d. 1938) was married to Cecilie Hansen (d. 1961).
My father cames to the USA in 1926 at he age of 16. He was supposed to live with relatives in Nebraska, but took it upon himself to stay in New York, and later New Jersey. He died in 1986. His brother, also Jann Paul, died in 1983, and his sister Josephine Ketels Schultz died in 1991. The family in the USA is in contact with the family on the island of Fohr.
It is my understanding that Jann Paul and Dorothea had other siblings as well, and that Jann Paul (b. 1849) was married to Josephine Petersen.

Hi Carol,
I was hoping to visit you this fall and view the records. I appreciated your taking time to give me the key to understanding the records. I am willing to do some entry work if necessary. I have an IBM compatible computer though, and not an apple.
I just got back from a cross country trip taking 3 weeks and 7,500 miles. It was great. We did some work on my husbands genealogy. Now it is time to readdress my work.
My birthday is next weekend so that is not good. After that before Thanksgiving - any weekend - would probably be OK.
I remember that you mentioned that you taught school and that during the week is not good for you. If that has changed let me know.
Sincerely,

I am thrilled to find all this wonderful information. I am a descendant of Conrad Eduard Hansen who immigrated to Battle Creek, Nebraska, USA. He was the son of Jurgen Friedrich Hansen and Elena Dorothea Jurgens. I also know a little about his brother Martin Conrad Hansen. A few of the other brothers settled in Chicago, Illinois, I believe.

I will look at the site more tonight when I get home. This is so wonderful. Are you collecting information on the descendants of these people? If so, I would be happy to share in the future.

My grandfather Jacob Mommsen was from the Parish of St. Johanniskirche in Nieblum. I think he had a brother Nahne
who went to Yuba County in California. Jacob came to Australia. They had a sister Hanne, who married Edward
Christensen of Copenhagen. All this happened around 1880-
1900. Other families of Momsen are in Australia with
Schleswig- Holstein connections. Thank you for the site.

My father Nanning Adolf Dethlefs was born and raised near Wyk and I have two uncles I know about. One is Jacob Dethlefs, a sea Captain I last saw in 1982 and an Uncle Martin I have never met. Jacob has three sons Olaf, Peter and Hulga and a daughter whose name I can't remeber. I was last there 20 years ago and hope to go back some day. My father immigrated in the late 50s to New York and passed away in 1988. Thanks for all the hard work. I have a sister in Flagstaff and a brother, William Dethlefs in North Carolina. I'll let you know if and when I go for a visit.

Comments:
Supposedly my grandfather, Mathias Henry Landt, and his brother , John Peter Landt, were born on one of the North Frisian Islands. They came to the USA in 1882 with their mother, Gertrude, and their stepfather, Henry Hamel. A distant cousin remembers the island as "Famin", but I can find no such island by that name. Is this an out-dated name or a phonetic spelling for another island? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your information on Wyk Auf Fohr. I really appreciate it. I had been searching the Web today looking for a history of the island and maps...hadn't found much (especially not in English) until I got here. I'd also be interested in any information you might come across regarding my ancestors...Richard Nommensen (his wife later married a Burzlaff after he died) or John Lorenzen (he came to America in his early 20's but parts of his family stayed on Fohr. Thanks!

This is a wonderful site.My grandparents, Simon Adolph Jacobs and Nora Christina Dethlefs were from Fohr. They had 6 children. My brother and sister and I visited the island when we were younger. I had the luck to visit with my grandmother when most of her contemporaries were alive and well and I have great memories and also a real appreciation of my heritage. My father's cousin, Simon Reinhardt Matthiesen had a gasthaus in Goting where we stayed. I still have relatives on the island and in fact, sent my own daugher back to visit with my Dad in 1994. I plan to bring my husband and children back again soon. These connections and memories are so much a part of me and my childhood!

This site is great! I have been looking for information on the island of Fohr and finally found it! my great-great-great-(maybe one more)grandfather was Matthias Petersen ("Lucky"). I never knew he was so famous! My grandfather Carl Julius Petersen came to NY in the 1920's and married my grandmother. I never met him, but he told my grandmother all about the island, and she passed some information to me, as much as she could remember. He was either a great-grandson or a great-great grandson of Matthias. Is there any other information available about Matthias and his descentdents? Such as children, grandchildren...etc. Or even the other way, his parents, grandparents etc. This would be very helpful to me as I trace back my ancestors. Thank you so much!

My family came from the island of Fohr and Langeness. My father came to the US in the 20's. His name was Christian Friedrick Ketels, my grandfather was Hinrich Cornelius Ketels born 1855. Most of my family on my fathers side were either Ministers or Sea going men. I have visited the island 3 times and dearly love it. Our Ketels family has a reunion on the island every 3 years. I am the only direct decendant (along with my brother and Sister) that live in the USA. A couple of my cousins did live in NY for awhile but moved back to Foehr manyh years ago. I will keep your site in mind and hope to read more interesting articles in the future. Hark.
