i grew up as a harned girl, the torment that goes with that name, sorry, but the boys teased me to no end. My father is Charles Harned from Flushing. His father was also named Charles Harned from Flushing, NY who married Evelyn Roberts Harned from Vermont. My father had a brother Richard Harned that was killed in Vietnam in the sixies, I still have his letters. He also has a younger brother Wayne who lives in California, There also is a picture of Virginia Harned the actress in Atlantic City at the Green Irish bar on the boardwalk. I was born in Brooklyn and I currently live in New Jersey for many years. Very interesting web site, must i must say Harneds are great providers but very cold people. What a great stumble I made onto this site. I have heard of Harneds in my family tree all my life but this is the deepest I have dug into them.
Here is the genealogy leading to me:
Edward M. Harnett Jr. to Jonathan Harnett to Nathaniel Harned to Nathan Harned (b. 1731/32) to Samuel Harned (1765) to David Harned (b 1794) to Sarah Harned Swatzel (died c 1890) to Mary Swatzel Bushong to Minnie Bushong Patty to Elbertine Patty Stephenson (d. 1980) to Harold Stephenson to Me, Mark Stephenson.
I lived in NYC and many times was in the areas of Huntingon L.I. , NY, and Woodbridge and Raritan, NJ, and had no idea my Harned ancestors were from these places. I now live back in North Carolina where I was born.

Hi happen to find your website while doing genealogy this morning. As a kid, I went by Harned for years. I was teased for being like a hornet much to my disdain.It is a smashing name for a lawyer anyway.It should be no big surprise that it was always the Irish kids in the neighborhood that came up with such brutal nicknames. This is in responsa to the fellow that complained of being called "hard headed".

A lot of info on Harned's. I've only ran into a couple of Harned's (other than my large family) in my 47 years. Most of them were when I was a kid, visiting my grandfather, aunts and uncles in Paducah, Kentucky.

Fabulous site Just heard about it today from my cousin whom I haven't heard from in years. She got a call from Thomas Harned in Tulsa OK. Haven't really studied too much will when I have more time. I happened upon this site when I put into a search engine the name Frederick Morgan Isele, who is the biological father of my son, Adam Jon-Erik, 20-years old. They have never met one another, due to our relationship breaking off during my pregnancy in 1982 thru 83...he gave up his paternal rights and I never heard from him again. I ran into a friend of his several years ago and he said that Fred is married now with other children. His son is now over 6'4", and extremely handsome. He is in the Army and had to go to Iraq, but will hopefully be back in the U.S. soon. It's Fred's loss that he turned his back on such a wonderful son.

Their son Benjamin moved into Platte County, MO in the 1840's and there were many Smither descendants in the late 1800's - early 1900's, one of which was my father born in 1903. This is a wonderful site and I think everyone who has contributed to it deserves a lot of praise (and "Thanks") Mary Ann Molly Byrne, third wife of John William Harned, is a sister to my great-grandmother, Jennie Jane Byrne. Mary Ann also had another sister named Elizabeth (Lizzie)Byrne who married a man whose last name was Farmer. I believe they also lived in Nelsonville, Ky.
Unfortunately (for me), I've come up against the proverbial brick wall when it comes to finding the name and any dates for their parents. The only name I've come across is "Prather" which may be the maiden name of Molly's mother.
At any rate, I now have more information about my great aunt and uncle than I had before and I want to thank you. I won't neglect to cite the correct source from where the information came.

Our family moved to Missouri in the late 60's but were originally from the little town of Boston Ky. My father is Daymond and my mother is Patricia Vittitow. It was not until an interview in Nov 2001 with Carrie Miller Wise that I discovered a link to the Harned family. This link was the marriage of Sallie Harned to Curtis Norton Miller. One of their sons, Coll, married Ruth Kennedy, my aunt. I have since been in contact with Tom Harned who has been most gracious in answering some of my questions.

Dear John, Tom, and other "family" members,
I think this website it great, and have been browsing it for some time now. I also emailed Tom (I think) a few weeks ago with some further info on my family, including that my father William Charles Harned, b. 8-8-20, died this year 4-25-01 at the age of 80. I remember my grandfather Charles Arthur Harned very well, and have been regaled with stories of my GREAT-grandfather, William Paris Harned, my whole life. I have yet to get a contact for you for my Aunt Mary Louise's family, but will do that just as soon as I think to remember it. One of the things I had asked Tom about was family history of addictions, since it has played a major role in this particular branch of the family, especially alcoholism and eating disorders. The other two things I'm curious about with regard to the Harned family in general are these: Despite these health problems, our Harneds seem especially hale and hearty, and long-lived. My grandfather was strong and healthy until he died at age 88. His sister Alta was well into her nineties. My great-grandfather was 92 when he died, and HIS father was 96 (we have a picture of him on his motorcycle when he was in his nineties.) The other noteable trait I'm curious about with the other "branches" is the tendency to be annoyingly effective practical jokers! My dad was rather famous for it, as was my grandfather, and on up the line.
These are just a few of my comments--I love the site and have learned a lot. Thank you for spending so much time and effort on it. I also neglected to mention in my updated family info that I sent to Tom a few weeks ago, that my cousin Jim (James Doody Harned, son of Max Raymond Harned) died the week before my dad, on April 17, 2001.
Again, thanks for providing this site and maintaining it. If I can help at all, please let me know.

I am a descendent of John Schyrock Harned and Ruth Green married ca.1820. They had 11 children. The Youngest, John Schyrock Harned,Jr. married Sarah Davis. They had 7 children. The oldest, Robert D. Case in point : Nathaniel Harned, of Woodbridge and "Annah Closson" were married at Woodbridge, 4th month 24th, 1742. Ref. is New York Gen and Biog.
