My earlier post left out a generation. Samuel Dedman had a son, John Dedman, who was the father of William Howard Dedman, who moved our branch from Mecklenburg County, VA, to Maury County, TN.
Grandfather John, sorry to leave you out earlier. John and Samuel are buried in Mecklenburg County, somewhere.

William Howard Dedman, son of Samuel Dedman, moved his growing family from Mecklenburg Co. (see section 6 of the clickable 1870 map) to the Leatherwood Creek area of then Maury County, TN, sometime between 1822 and 1846 (died). A number of his brothers and sisters stayed in Mecklenburg Co. This part of Maury Co. (just west of Williamsport, TN.), was later ceded to Hickman Co. Most of the family remained there, but two sons, James Monroe Dedman and Marcus Lafayette Dedman, moved to Alabama where they both served in the Confederate Army. There are still Dedmans living in the Bon Aqua and Little Lot areas of Hickman County, TN.
William Howard Dedman's will was probated in the Maury County Court and is on record either in the County Court or the Maury County Archives. A fire in the Hickman County Courthouse in the 1850s destroyed many vital records there.

Edward Clark was born December 27, 1756, probably Dinwiddie Co, VA. He was living in Mecklenburg Co., VA when he enlisted for RS; he was in a battle at Norfolk, Virginia, where wounded in defending the fort, and in several skirmishes; was discharged at Williamsburg, Virginia, after a service of twelve months. He was allowed pension on his application executed, September 12, 1822, while a resident of Elbert County, Georgia, having lived there about thirty years. In 1822, the soldier's wife was sixty-one years of age, and a daughter was aged nineteen years; their names are not given. The papers in this claim contain no further data relative to the family of the soldier, Edward Clark. Pension certificate No. 18877, issued January 30, 1823.
Patrick Butler and James Butler [both in Elbert Co., GA]declare they were acquainted with Edward Clark while in the company of Capt. Robert Ballard and regiment of infantry of Col. Stephens. He served twelve months in 1777 and 1778.
Two Edward Clark's appears on an undated militia roster for Capt. White's Company, Elbert Co., GA. On the same roster are Williamson Clark, Gillard [Gilbert?] Clark, and Christopher Clark. The list is probably after 1805. The 1782 and 1784 personal property tax lists for Mecklenburg Co., VA also lists Edward Clark Sr., Edward Clark, Jr. and Gillard [Gilbert?] Clark.). I don't know if these are the same men.

Akin?
John Hubbard m. Sally
Joseph Hubbard m. Cynthia Bennett?
Mary Hubbard m. _______ Puryear
Rhoda Hubbard m. _______ Burton (Thomas ?)
Susanna Hubbard m. (1) Womack ? (2) Walter Nunnelee
In 1778 a John Hubbard sold land to James Hall in one transaction and to John Brame in another. I think this is my John Hubbard and these land sales were in preparation for departure to Georgia; but cannot prove it. Jones, Puryear, Burton and Hubbard are all names appearing in Lewis Parham's 1784 Census List and also names associated with this Hubbard family. The foregoing, I believe, is strong support for my theory

Chapter I
Born into Slavery
Four years before the beginning of the war which was
to change me from chattel to man, I was born in a
little white-washed log cabin on the Hendrick Estate,
near Palmer Springs and the Roanoke River, amid the
green hills of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. On
December 20, 1857, I unceremoniously became one more
slave on the plantation of Mr. Hendrick.
Of my ancestry I have known little and a bust life has
not allowed me time fro genealogy tracing, but the
ever present memory of my mother, father and
grandmother has been sufficient to fill whatever place
ancestral worship might have taken place in my life.
In Mecklenburg County however, the story has been
handed down that my mother’s grandmother was sold in
Palmer Springs shortly after she was brought from
Africa. She had a daughter Seleah, and both of them
worked in the “Big Houseö. Seleah had four daughters
and two sons, and following the custom on most
plantations, all the daughters were married under the
supervision of their master. This matter of producing
slaves was as important as breeding animals!
One of these, Araminta became my mother. My paternal
parent, Solomon Russell, was slave on the Russell
plantation in Warren County, North Carolina. My first
seven or eight years, therefore, were spent without my
knowing the companionship of a father or my
experiencing the richness of a household that where
husband and wife planned, worked, and prayed together.
All my problems were my mothers until after the Civil
war, when my parents joined each other and began to
make of hut or cabin a home.
Palmer Springs in years past was a flourishing
watering place, and attracted many visitors to the
crystal mineral springs after which it was named.
Besides these, the cultivation of cotton and bright
tobacco were the principal occupations and these
commodities, with the slaves, formed a triumvirate by
which wealth was measured. Today, the natural beauty
of the country is just as picturesque, but other
popular resorts together with improved modes of
travel, have robed it of it’s value as a tourist
rendezvous; the traffic in slaves is now a thing of
the past, and cotton is no longer king. In the same
way and typical of changing times, a modern steel
bridge now spans the Roanoke River and connect
Virginia wit North Carolina, where in the days gone by
we used to cross the stream in “flatsö. Round about
the country many of the descendents of the slaves, and
grandchildren and great grandchildren of my former
master still make their homes: one of the descendents
of Mr. Hendrick also occupies my old master’s house.
My mother was poor, very poor. This poverty stood out
all the more because, following the emancipation, we
were left to fight our own battles and to manage our
own lives; we were cast upon the billowy deep to
paddle our own canoe, to what destination we scarcely
knew. One thing we soon found out; no more could we
look to our master for shelter, sustenance, care, and
direction; we had gained Freedom and with it the
responsibilities-dire responsibilities, at first-of
being our own masters.
All through the Civil War, my mother and the other
slaves remained on the plantation, but the news of the
strife was always around us; three of our master’s
sons were away with the Confederate forces, and
concern for them also gripped the slaves. The older
slaves knew the meaning of the conflict and although
they remained loyal, they hoped for freedom and would
whisper such tidings as they gleaned concerning the
success of the Union soldiers. When the Yankees neared
Mecklenburg, my master had all his slaves and
valuables taken and hid in the depths of the woods,
and there they remained for weeks at a time; the
slaves living in barracks and on the most meager of
diets.
Mother lived in one of the log cabins near the “Big
Houseö all through 1865, and at the close of the year
my father built a small log cabin just across Smith’s
Creek in North Carolina. Here we stayed until the
close of 1867, when my parents and several other
relatives decided to return to the Virginia side.
There they built more cabins and settled down to two
of the hardest years ever. Fishing, gunning, and
trapping had to be engaged to augment the income that
came in from the farm, but at best only a mere
existence could be eked out. Although I was young, I ,
too had to help earn the daily bread, and so as a
little barefoot farm boy, a “one gallusö boy in
mother-made trousers, I milked the cow, sold eggs and
the butter my mother made, hoed and followed the
plough, and did a hundred and one other chores which
kept me close to the soil and which were to influence
me all the rest of my life.
My mother often told me that she named me Solomon, not
s much because it was my father’s name, but because
she had hoped and prayed that somehow I would be as
wise as the Solomon of the Bible about whom she had
heard the white minister preach and the Negro
lay-reader exhort. On every occasion she would seek
advice about my schooling and ask people what they
thought of me. One of the persons who made a great
deal over me was Mr. Thomas Wade, overseer on the
Hendrick Estate. He would take me riding behind him as
he went about the farm, answering the countless
questions with which I bombarded him and laying down
one condition for my going: that I wear breeches, even
though I was still at the age when little dresses or
gowns were the order of the day.
Mr. John E. P. Wright, who was the superintendent of
the white Sunday school near Palmer Springs until he
decided to help the small colored Sunday school to get
on its feet, was also one of the persons who
encouraged me. The colored school was begun n the
Spring of 1870 with Mr. “Mack: Dugger as
superintendent and my two cousins and myself as
pupils.

He and his twin brother, ZEPHANIAH GRIFFIN, were the youngest siblings of a large family. Hezekiah Griffin was married to Mary, whose last name we do not know. Speculation is that it was "Wiles", but we have no positive proof. Hezekiah Griffin was a member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church in northern Granville County, North Carolina.
Upon the sale of his land to a Mr. Overby, some 170 acres adjoining John J. Throckmorton and others in the "Shiney Rock" area of Mecklenburg, southwest of Clarksville and very near the North Carolinia line (and Granvile County), the Griffins move to Kentucky. Hezekiah Griffin's brother, Zephaniah, had moved there a number of years earlier.
Hezekiah and Mary Griffin died in Henderson County, Kentucky, and are buried with many of their kin in the Griffin Family Cemetery, east of the City of Henderson. One of their children was my great grandmother, LOUISA GRIFFIN(1839-1912). She was married to my great grandfather, GEORGE D. NETHERY, August 21, 1860, in Granville County, N. C.
Name: J. Marshall Neathery <jmneathery1969@mindspring.com> Date: 2000-02-05 Name of Family Head & Wife Thomas Nethery (wife unknown) Came to Mecklenburg from: County, State and Year Chester County, Pennsylvania ca. 1760 Moved from Mecklenburg to: County, State and Year, or where he d Died in Mecklenburg County, 1798 Comments:
THOMAS NETHERY(1719-1798)is listed on the tax books of Chester County, Pennsylvania in the late 1750s, i.e. 1756 - 1759. He rented land, was a farmer, and had a family. The first public record that bears his name in Mecklenburg County, is a County Court Order in which he, his hands, and neighbors and hands, are instructed to do repair work on a public road that runs by Thomas Erskine's place and others. In Mecklenburg County Court Order Book 9, Page 214, Richard Witton is listed as the overseer, with Thomas Erskine, Thomas Netherly, and others as workers....along with their hands. In a subsequent 1769 deed, it appears that Thomas Nethery had claimed squatters' rights on some 50 acres of land, probably about 1760, that would be included in his 1769 purchase of land from the said Richard Witton. Nethery was married three times. We do not know the name of the wife who came with him to Mecklenburg County. We only know the name of the third wife, who was Mary Ann Baker.

Claiborne B. JOHNSON and Nancy THOMAS were married Sept 1821 in Lunenburg County, VA. They are in personal property tax lists there for 1820-1822.
In 1830-1838 (except for 1833) they are found in Mecklenburg County, VA personal property tax lists.
In 1840-1854 (except for 1844) they are found in Franklin County, VA personal property tax lists.
In 1860, Claiborne must be deceased and his wife is enumerated with her son, James M. JOHNSON, in Pettis County, MO.
It appears that Claiborne did not own any land and must have been a sharecropper or farm laborer. He could have died in Franklin County, VA, enroute to MO, or in MO between 1854 and 1860.
Name: Ruth Hasten Walsh <ruthwalsh@mailexcite.com> Date: 1999-12-29 Name of Family Head & Wife Zachariah Hastings Came to Mecklenburg from: County, State and Year Abt 1768 from Amelia Co., VA Moved from Mecklenburg to: County, State and Year, or where he d 1780-1782, Caswell Co., NC Comments:
Data based upon Zachariah Hastings American Rev. War Pension file as well as VA/NC census and tax records. Zachariah's pension file states he was born 1751 in Amelia Co., VA. He was one of three sons named in the 1763 Amelia Co., VA will of John Hastings. Zachariah's pension file states he lived in Amelia Co. until he was about 17 when his family moved to Mecklenburg Co., VA where he lived until about 1780-1782. Zachariah then moved Warren Co., NC where he lived for eight/nine years. About 1797-98 he moved to Caswell Co., NC where he lived until his death in April-May, 1835.
Zachariah's mother was unnamed in his father's will; however, the Amelia Co., VA will of Francis Tucker indicates that Amy Tucker Hastings probably was married to John Hastings.
Above data also supported by tax and deed records in Amelia Co., VA, Mecklenburg Co., VA, Warren Co., NC and Caswell Co., NC

Looking for information on VA roots of James Norment, supposedly born in Caroline County, VA 2/15/1766. Following is the obituary of his son, James Norment, Jr.: 1875, October 31, "At his residence in Vidalia, LA on Sunday morning, Oct. 31, 1785, James Normant, aged 73 years and 9 months. *He was born in Mecklenburg County, Va., where issues the first Declaration of Independence. His father was one of the descendants of the Scotch Covenanters, who settled in Virginia in the Seventeenth century. His religion was ever in accordance with the Presbyterian Church. It was his solace through life, from which he departed in the full assurance of acceptance by his savior. *In the early part of his life, he was an assistant of the Clerk of the Court, which familiarized him to the duties to which his fellow citizens had elected him as magistrate, Clerk of Police Jury, and Recorder in Concordia Parish. In 1828, he removed to Alexandria, Parish of Rapides where he conducted a very heavy mercantile business in the company with his brother Richard, but on the death of the latter he gave up merchandising and began planting cotton. In a few years he sold his plantation and removed to New Orleans, where he engaged in the wholesale grocery business and remained there until his sons had obtained a fair education in the public schools. He then purchased a tract of new land in Concordia, on the banks of Black River, where he remained until his sons became planters, when he removed to Vidalia, at which place, being elected recorder, he lived until his death. *In the family circle he was beloved as he loved, and a among his numerous acquaintances he sustained the character of an honorable and true citizen."
