Congradulations for your site, it is the most interesting I have come across so far.My husband's ancestors left Saint-Domingue, because of the revolution, for Charleston, South Carolina. I know that because I found on the site of the Mormons the names of Thomas de Baussan, son of Claude and Jeanne Marguerite Borgnet[or Bouquet]. Thomas was the father of many children, one of whom: Marie Marguerite de Baussan Married jean Baptiste Ignace de Michel and died in Charleston on July 29, 1847. My question is: is there a way to obtain some copies of those acts? Thank you for your help. Emmelyn.

Dear Ms. Elmwood,
Your email was sent back to me as undeliverable so I hope this reaches you.
Dr. Rosemary Brana-Shute from the College of Charleston gave me your name and thought you might be able to help me. I am trying to locate information about a couple (man and wife) who came to SD from Senegal and later to Charleston after the revolt. Their names are Guillaume Dumont and Marie-Adolphe Rossignol-Aubert. I understand they were married in Cap francaise and I have the film for the parish records on order from the LDS.
I am specifically trying to learn Ms. Rossignol-Aubert’s race as it became an issue for her grandson who when in Charleston was denied a license to practice medicine because he was “of mixed blood.ö
I am desperate to find someone who can help me track this couple from Senegal to SD and thence to Charleston.
Do you have any suggestions?
I am most appreciative of any help you can provide.
Sincerely

Dear Augusta,
Thank you for your wonderful website and your exhaustive research of the genealogy and history of Saint Domingue.
My 5th ggrandfather, Mathieu Petit, was born at Port-au-Prince, Saint Domingue in about 1789. His father was Germain PETIT and his mother's name was either Angelica Hanrrieta GOBERT or Maria Ana GOBERT. I believe that he went to Cuba before coming to New Orleans where he lived for many years. He was married to Aimee Wiltz and, then, to Caroline Hermant or Berthot. He died 6 November 1933 in New Orleans.
I'm looking forward to researching the microfilm at an LDS History Center of the region to find my Saint-Domingue roots and learning more in general about the history of the region.
Thanks for all of your help.
Sincerely,
Renee Rogers

I have ancestor who married a Godfried Cosse (Black) from Plaquemines 'PArish. You probably related to all the Cosse's there. lots of White Cosse. Actually, A Pierre Cosse was listed as the oldest resident died in 1897 and mentions he was a descendant of a general from Napoleon Bonaparte's army. this is probably the Cosse-Brissac you mentioned. He probably went to Louisiana for Napoleon and entired through the mouth of the Miss. which we know is Buras and thru Plaquemines. check it out. also google Cosse-Brissac you will see lots of info on him and napoleon. you may very well find the connection.

We are interested in any information about Jacques Gaignard who was supposedly a plantation owner, shipper and a Governor of Haiti sometime between 1750 and the revolution/rebellion. He was born in La Fleche, France in about 1723. His minor brother, Pierre, went to Haiti with him. Jacques sent Pierre to Connecticut, USA to learn enlish and receive shpments. Pierre Gaignard changed his name to Peter Ganyard and all Ganyards in the US are believed to be his descendants. We have an extensive computerized genealogy chart of the Ganyards which we can share. We know little about the Gaignards before Peter Ganyard and would like any info we can get.

About 8 or so years ago I was dating, Nicolas, my husband now, who is the nephew of the Rene T. in Normandie. Rene was my host father as I was a student and I remember reading a letter that Rene T. from the states had written him. I don't think the french Rene ever contacted him. At any rate, Rene's daughter has done a lot of family geneology and I was thinking maybe Rene (U.S.) may be interested.
Thankyou.

I am searching for information on my ancestor Bertrand de Lapointe and his wife Louise de la San Conte who were murdered by their slaves during the uprising. They were residents of the parish of St. Gerome de la Petite Riviere of St. Dominque. Their daughters were in school in France and upon their return to Haiti were told of their parent's death at which time the ship sailed on to Philadelphia where they lived with an uncle. One daughter, Josephine, met and married William Simmons in Philadelphia in 1799. Her sister, Demoiselle Vanessa Bertrand de Lapointe married
Louis Anatasse Carason of Avignon, France in 1800, and another daughter returned to France and married an Italian nobleman. I am most interested in finding information of the Lapointe family in Haiti. They had sugar and coffee plantations and refineries and owned many slaves. Josephine and William Simmons are interesting as I am a decendent of them.
I was very happy to find your website as it is a daunting task to find information of Saint-Domingue.

The Prevosts were at Cap Francais. At the time of the slave revolt in the 1790s a Madame Prevost (probably Madeleine) fled with her 2 children, Joseph and Sara Sophira (Sophie). The father (probably Joseph) was murdered. They went first to Savannah where Sophie married A Prussian Jewish merchant, Benjamin Jewell, in the mid-1790s. By 1800 or so they were in Charleston. Also in Charleston was a Joseph Prevost (possibly Sophie's brother) who married a Mary Mattuce. There also are connections with the family names Destries and Delbos (Delbeau?). My other family (unrelated to the Prevosts) is Layssard. Nicholas Layssard married Maria Juana (Marie Jeanne?) Des Mortiers. Nicolas' sister, Helene married Pierre Des Mortiers. They all lived at Plaisance, a community about 10 miles south of Cap Francais until the slave uprising forced them to flee. They returned to Louisiana where the parents of Nicolas and Helene Layssard lived.

Thomas Mestayer compiled some history of our ancestors. Guillaume Mestayer from Bordeaux, France moved to town of Gris Gris, parish of Baynet, in Southern Saint-Domingue, near Jacmel in 1750. He acquired wealth for his family and at some point during the slave revolt his ancestors moved to New Orleans. The first American record is from the New Orleans Flannery Census, 1805. Frederic Mestayer (son of Guillaume) living at 46 Rue Foucher.
My interest is finding other families with a similar heritage. The trials they faced and also the life they lived in the Caribbean. My ancestors lived in Saint Domingue for over fifty years with 2 generations born on the island. This removes us from alot of French customs and education leaving a unique hybrid. What a colorful history. Would love to find other families and see if our paths are similar.

Do you know where I can obtain lists (for example, lists of those who benefited from aid, distributed by the aid societies founded to help them).
I'm a professor of French History at Auburn University working on a book that will touch on the subject of St-Domingue refugees. Any help with "raw lists" and "list-type sources" would be great.

Great site! You've been such a help to so many people. I hope the favor is rtned in multitudes. I appreciate the info you've just sent me. My earliest known St. Domingue ancestor: Denis Richard DECHANET dit DESSESSARTS, into the US--Louisiana--just before 1800. There are also records that indicate TAINTURIER DESSESSARTS. I've had contact w/a Capt. Petit of France researching TAINTURIER DESSESSARTS, but I've yet to understand if these were arms of the same family, or 2 separate families, since DESSESSARTS was a "dit" name. Any info or suggestions--I'd love to hear from you! My DESSESSARTS were of mixed blood, & it appears that I am the only one thus far that has found knowledge of this.

My great-great grandfather, Louis Gaignard immigrated to New Orleans from Santo Domingo by way of Cuba in the early 19th Century. He was mulatto, a cigar maker and a gens de coleur libre. We have been unable to find records of his parents. Many records of that period were destroyed in natural disasters. We have some suspicion he may have been the son of James Gaignard, Governor of Haiti and a mulatto or slave on his plantation. If you have any information that would be helpful in our search we would be very grateful for you assistance. Merci beaucoup.

My sister and I are looking for any information that might lead us to the existence of the birth certificate of Charles' son, Amedee Papet. We believe that when he left France, he went to Santo Domingo for a period of time. He then went to Louisiana. At some point he married Charlotte Virginia Esnoul de Livaudais, the mother of Amedee Papet.

Louis Marcel Falgoust dit Beaumont was surgeon in service to France. Arrived Louisiana ca: 1739, married 1742 at German Coast, died ca: 1778. In researching, including B.Allen's work, it's unclear when he left France & arrived Louisiana. We think he served 1735-1739 at Saint Domingue since his estate shows a 'History of Saint Domingue'. Does your work involve this early period? Do you know of any early History of SD? Can you help me or direct me? If membership required please advise details. Merci boucoup, a bientôt,
Glenn Falgoust
