Hello, I have no idea where to begin, nor do I know if I'm addressing the correct family. My name is Chris, and I'm trying to find people in my family. My grandfather removed the W from the end of our name when he was of age to. His name was George Thurlo, he married Annette Thurlo and they had 14 children 7 boys and 7 girls. If I'm correct they were all born in massechusetts then moved to benicia ca. If anyone knows of my family please let me know. Thanks Chris Thurlo Jr.

My initial excitement at finding Larry's Thurlow Family Genealogy pages wore off when I didn't see any signs of a connection to me, and then in the guestbook I found two entries from people descended from the same William Thurlow... My great-great grandfather was William Thurlow, a shepherd, born around 1834 in Suffolk, who married Lucy Smith;

their son and my great grandfather was Alfred Thurlow, born 23rd July 1875 at Audley End, Safron Walden, Essex, UK, who married Caroline Quaife; their other children that I know of were Harry (born ? 1867), George (b? 1869), Sam (b ? 1874), Maurice (b ? 1879), Clara (b ? 1881) and Frank, born 1883/4 in Bygrave, Hertfordshire (just outside the town of Baldock).

Among Alfred and Caroline's children were my grandfather, Frederick Thurlow, born 17th February 1912, in Edmonton, North London, and Frank Cecil (born ? 1899), Alfred William (born? 1900), Caroline (b ? 1908) Lilian Alice (b ? 1909) Millicent Mary (b ? 1911) and Sydney Percy, born 10th August 1914.

My grandfather, Frederick Thurlow, left my grandmother, Edith Alice Dubery, and his three children (including my father, Terence) sometime in the 1940's: this is not a subject my father has ever wanted to talk about, so all I know about the Thurlow family (including the info above) is gained from a few snippets I know and my own research using birth and marriage certificates, and UK Census entries.

Greetings to any related Thurlow family members out there!

I have never known much about the Thurlows except for my Dad's family of 5 boys (all gone now, in order from youngest to oldest)and his parents. He was Roger William Thurlow, born in Winn, ME Feb.16in 1923 and died of panceatic cancer, July 07,1989. He grew up on he Winn Rd in Lee and he and his 4 brothers all went to Lee Academy (as did their parents) and all 5 graduated from he University of Maine in Orono. His chidren were Sylvia Louise and Mary Francina and his wife was Francina Mary Gamble T. Roger was a math teacher at Orono High most of his life (after one year in Bridgeton). He had a masters degree in education and was part of the way to a doctorate at Boston College. He was well known as a fisherman and hunter, and had a camp at Bottle Lake in Lakeville. The others were Everett Beach T., who was a lifetime Air Force pilot, Lt. Col. who had a masters in history and taught for a while. He was born in July of 1921 and died july of 2004. I know all of his 3 children, etc. The next oldest was Roger. The next was Frederick (Fred) who was tall and played basketball and was later a basketball coach and high school principal in Maine and Mass. I have the info on his wife and 3 children, etc. Next was Harold LeMay T. He had 6 children and died at age 42 in 1972 after being urban renewal director of Bangor, ME. The last was Richard . He was 8 years younger than the rest and dies in a fire at age 26 . He worked at Ernst and Ernst in Portland..They were raised on a farm and walked a few miles to school. Their father, Rollin Hartwell Thurlow, worked in the woods in the winter and later became a town manager (Brownville, Ashland, Danforth, Oakfield, nd Milbridge. He dies in Lincoln Jan. 10,1988. He had been one of 8 children. His wife, Marguerite Beach Thurlow, was an RN, the first to pass the state test from Eastern Maine Hospital training. (1920?)I know some of her family history, but of the Thurlows, I only know they lived in the back woods of Lee and the father was Fred and the mother was Sophia (Sophie) Hook Thurlow (I have a little bit of her family history.) The children were Frank, Otto, Ray, Rollin, Hazel, and Viva and two other girls One died in high school after playing basketball (very tall around the turn of the century (1900). Fred Thurlow's father was Jonas and was married to Mary Anne Jordan T. and his father was Moses and was married to Maria Child T.Moses' father lived in Industry, Me and the original anscestor to come from England to Rowley, Mass. in the late 16000's from North Riding of Yorkshire. His name was either John or Richard.

Maiden name Thurlow, born in Bangor , ME . Dad Roger Thurlow, born Lee, Maine, 1923. Math teacher. Our branch came to Maine from Mass in the 1800's (from England before that.# Since I just visited England, I wondered where they lived in England. The original Thurlow to this country 8 or so generations ago wasRichard Thurlow. There were also Stephen, John, Moses #married to Maria Child), and Jonus. My grandfather was Fred and his father was Jonus, married to Mary Anne Jordon. Iwas told they came near Scotland, and have seen on the internet they came from Suffolk, town of Thurlow. You are probably from another branch of the family. Do you have any other information where they originated in England?

Hi to all the Thurlow clan, its been a few years since I last looked in on the site, there have been some nice additions. I have a query, the coat of arms on the home page is it correct? My father Kenneth Lawrence Thurlow had the Thurlow coat of arms investigated many, many years ago through a genealogy company and they came back with the coat of arms which is very similar to the one shown on this site, the only difference being above each of the 3 Portcullis we have a dog (looks like a greyhound). So which one is correct, we have had this plaque on our family home for over 20yrs. Also during a recent trip to Vancouver following an excellent skiing trip to Whistler I was so pleased to see more than one road/street bearing the name Thurlow, I am lead to believe that the name is fairly significant in Canada as a whole can anyone confirm this and shed any light on the significance - Laurie (Birmingham West Midlands UK)

My paternal great great great grandfather John Wiseman of Burnham Norton, Norfolk married Margaret Thurlow. They had two elder sons, Wilkes and William, who died tragically in their early twenties. They also lost one daughter by the name of Elizabeth at the age of 7 years. They had surviving daughters and one son, George, my great great grandfather, born in 1801.

Not so much a Thurlow ...but James Thurlow (C1818) married Eleanor James (c1816) and they had Eliabeth Thurlow (1846) Eleanor Thurlow (1850) and Margaret Thurlow (1848). Now Elizabeth married Thomas Gustard, hence my interest in the name........anyone verify the dates

My branch of the family came from England and initially settled in Lanark County, Ontario Canada. My Great -grandfather, Hugh Natchbull Thurlow had three wives (not all at once) and seventeen children. My Grandfather, Peter Thurlow, moved to Midland, Michigan. My Father moved to nearby Flint, Michigan where I was born. I have been a resident of Connecticut for about 45 years. I have a substantial body of genealogical data on that branch of the family. If anyone is interested they can contact me at the e-mail address listed above.

I know that they had 2 or three children who would be my cousins. I have the names of 2 Peter John Thurlow and Erica Thurlow who I think may be in their 40s / 50s now. Their father was William Thurlow, born in London around 1851.

I have always believed the family originally came from Suffolk but have not been able to trace it.

Hi, I'm one of the Newbury,Essex county, Mass. Thurlows. I've been researching our lineage from my children back to Richard Thurlow. I now live in Maine. The lineage that I have also includes sisters and brothers all the way back. What I need is; in some cases I don't have either birth or death dates or both. In some cases I do have their marriage dates and locations. I also need the name of the ship that Richard was on and the port it left from the UK.. Does anyone happen to know the town or city he was from? I can swap Information.

Hi Larry and all,

This is amazing. My grandmother, Ethel Constance Thurlow was sent to Canada in 1907 by the Bernardo Home, as a Home child. We have finally gotten some information on her, but we lose the family in the 1901 census. Her mother was Edith Emma Thurlow of the Hackney, England area. They moved around alot, and it was always in the London area. Grandma's father was Harry John Gordon, and she had a brother John, two years younger, who stayed with his mother. Edith married in 1900 to Charles Dawson. I found her in the 1901 Census. I can find no trace of her parents. Or of most of her brothers and sisters. One brother William, I am pretty sure is still in London, but I can not find her parents or the rest of the family. I also can not find death records or anything else. Her father was William Robert Thurlow, born 22 Nov 1848, Stamford Hill,Middlesex,England. Mother Emma Smith b. 1853 Hackney, Middlesex, England. Children: Edith Emma b. 15 June 1873, William Thomas c.1874, Albert George, 1876, Ethel Louisa 1877, Arthur Edwin, 1880, Alice Amelia, 1884, May Helena (Nellie) 1886 Kate Violet, 1888, Frederick Frank Charles, 1892, Lily May, 1895, Harry, 1897. William Robert's parents were Frederick Thurlow b.1819 Kingsland, Middlesex, England. His mother Sohpia Baylis, C. 15 Oct.1820 Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England, Their Children, William Robert, Amia 1853, Frederick, 1856, Eliza, 1858, Edwin, 1860, who married Emily Keightley, of Bath, Somerset, England.and Emma youngest child of Frederick and Sohpia, Emma 1850. Frederick's father was Frederick Thurlow b. abt. 1789, Blo Norton, Norfolk, England, and his wife Ester, Hampstead, Middlesex, England. I know this is a lot of information, but it has been very hard to find any connections. We grew up thinking Thurlow was a very funny name, especially since my sister wears it as a third middle name. Now that we have researched it, it is a badge of honour. Hope we can connect with someone's line. Thanks for this awsome site.

Hi Larry. I am overjoyed by your awesome site! I am related to the Siferd girls, Valma and Sylvie. They would be my grandfather's, Lloyd Perry Siferd, aunts. My grandfather is the son of Wilbur and Viola Siferd. Thanks to the aid of your research, I was able to put together some missing pieces of the family history puzzle. Not only was the names and dates a treat, but I researched your photos too, which was an added bonus! My grandfather is in the later end of stage one of Alzheimers disease, but I showed him your reasearch on Sylvia Siferd-Thurlow and he was like a little boy at Christmas. He recognized quite a few names, which made me happy. It is said that he still retains names, dates, and events of the past, but for now he struggles with short-term memory. He did recognize his aunts in photos without any assistance, which I witnessed him stick his chest out with pride and confidence. Thanks for your your generousity and sharing such information to total strangers, who just happen to be related somewhere down the line. I wanted you to know how much my grandfather and I appreciate your spectacular detective work!!! I was able to add information where you left off. If it weren't for you, I would have only been able to start our family tree with my great-grandfather, Wilber Leo Siferd. Thanks again, Larry! Great job and may God Bless you always!

I am researching the THURLOW name as part of my friends genealogy. Her family descend from Charles Thurlow b 1795 who married Sophia b 1897 in Wickham Market Suffolk. They lived and bought their family up in Thorndon Suffolk. I would be interested to hear from anyone who may have infomation about this Thurlow branch

My research so far [1751] has my Thurlows in Durham city by 1796 and James Thurlow born 1751 buying a messuage there .My problem is-where did he originate?Wherever it was he married a Mary who later died and he remarried a Margaret Richardson.I have all the info except his birth details

I have spent four days looking for this site, I originally saw it a week ago and then very cleverly forgot to bookmark it.
My father was Heath THURLOW THOMPSON Two generations back the THURLOW was part of the surname but was dropped to being a middle name for boys only by my father and his brother (how sexist is that)
I am doing my family tree and have got to James Thurlow
Thompson married to Ellen Willis in 1889 District of Paddington, London.
They lived at 3 Sun Villa Oak Lane Edmonton in 1891
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHO WERE JAMES'PARENTS OR BROTHERS OR SISTERS???

We have traced out hisrory back quiet extensivly on both sides of the family to the 14 hudreds. The family originates in Norfolk UK but has spead widley all over the globe. Not for one minute suggesting that UK was the orogin. There is a fairly lage population of Thurlow's in S Wales, To which I have added my own daughter now 15 yrs old. To all the Thurlow's out there I wish you well

We now run the Invernairne Hotel in Thurlow Road, Nairn (near Inverness Scotland). Lord & Lady Thurlow lived in this grand house overlooking the sea for 8 years while building their house next door - "Firth View" (about 1880's). Lady Thurlow is said to have preferred this house (then called Castella Mare more than Firth View). He was Paymaster General of Britain in the late 1800's and we still have his Vault in our cellars (now used for storing the beer barrels!).
Would love to find photos of Lord THurlow or his staff when they lived here in Nairn.

He homesteaded a 1/4 section of land near Beechy, SK.
My grandmother was Annie Elvrum from Red Wing, MN.
I've visited relatives in North Dakota and Minnesota -
Carrington, ND was a homestead for my great uncles.
My dad is Lon (Alonzo Edward) Thurlow, and now lives
in Campbell River, BC. I first moved to the U.S.
in 1989, and am now in Fort Collins, CO. My wife
Michelle and I now have the next generation, a
pair of fraternal twin girls. It seems that our
family crossed the U.S./Canada border quite a bit!
I've never figured out how we connect to the
Thurlows in England or the Thurlows who settled
in Connecticut; clues welcome.

Take care,
Rob T

Just doing some research on the family name and came across your website. Nice job by the way!
I am of the NewEngland Thurlows, mostly Maine(Sabbath Day Lake/Mechanic Falls/Etc.) and Mass.(all over.)
The best I can find out, is that our ancesters came here from England in the 1600's. Maine seems to have a large Thurlow population. My great grandfather was Albert Thurlow of Maine. I also read that Thurlow is an olde English place name for comiing from "Thor's Hill" or even possibly "Thor's Mound"(as in Thurmond) England, but also heard that it could be of olde Norman origins (?). I have also read that there was at least one, maby several others in the olde English "peerage", ex. Lord Thurlow, etc.

My father was Desmond Arthur Thurlow b.12/7/26 d. 20/4/96. He came from a small village called Flamborough on the Yorkshire Coast. I have lost touch but I believe there are many Thurlows from his line flourishing in Flamborough and Beverley (inland a bit!)
There arn't that many of us around, are there!

Really enjoyed browsing your website. Had hopes when I saw that your John W. Barrett and my grandfather, John Thurlow Barrett, III, had similar features; however, once I saw that your family arrived in the U.S. after 1859, I decided it was just wishful thinking. Mary (nee) Thurlow Barrett and her family arrived in New Orleans from Vermont during the 1830s. I don't know her husband's given name or anything about Mary's background, but each generation since then has had the John Thurlow Barrett name passed down. If you find any VT/New Orleans clues, please pass them along.
