Hello Penny,
congratulations from Germany on your fine homepage. I am a 49 year old german who has been to lovely Folkestone countless times ever since the summer of 1975. I used to have friends living in Hythe, sadly after nearly 30 years of friendship they both passed away, having been seriously ill for quite some time. I will never forget Folkestone and most of the South East, especially all the very friendly people I`ve had the chance to meet over all those years, and the freh air that would greet me each time coming off the train from London`s Heathrow Airport. As a young lad of 17 years of age I used to be engaged to a Hythe girl, first love, so to speak. And guess what, we`re still in regular contact though living very different lives obviously these days. It`s simply a lifetime friendship and I guess I owe all of that to a large extent the british forces in Germany, becoming friends with some BAOR people in the 70´s. Well, that's the story so far, stay well and all of the very best to you! Bye, Christoph

Searching for ancestors from Folkestone, newington, Elham, districts... William west,1811 b folkstone and his wife Jane Ann Taylor 1821 b Ireland.. both ended up in the Elham union work house as poor people.
Jane Ann cauld not read or wright and had children b in newington and Folkstone one of the them married a shrubsole which i have all the info on...William's, son John West migrated to newzealand after 1916 on a ship called the remuera on its maiden voyage with his family..his wife Eliza Ellen Christopher from Dorset and 5 of there children.. Maude, Harry, Charlotte, Faith and Frederick.
note; William was in his mid 60ties when John his youngest was born.
William was b in folkstone ...not 100% ..but a possibility that the William West thats in the Dover gaol page cauld be my ancestor..he would have been a young man when court an thrown into gaol, after the escape he went on to be a soldier in the 12th lancers as this is on his marriage certificate to Jane Taylor.. he was sent home hurt and of cause ended up in the poor house, and died there..his son john with his own family lived at 110 Clarence D in Canning town of west ham..worked as dock labourer and was also a sailor..he wore 2 earrings in the lobes of his ears and had very blue piecing eyes, John west d in NZ in his 80s, was my grt grandfather.
has anybody got any clues or remember this family of west's
can u help me...

Dear Penny:
I came to your site hoping to locate information about a china and glass business my great-grandfather (Horace Pope) owned in Folkestone. Not only did I find him, I found his father (William Pope) who apparently started the china and glass business, Horace's marriage to Annie Inman in 1881, Annie's father's name (Thomas), and the birth record of my grandfather (Horace Sidney Herbert Pope). This far exceeded what I hoped to find. Thank you!

Hello Penny,
Just browsing through your site. Great stuff. I am currently looking at my Cobb family roots. Although they are from Margate there may be some connection.
Thomas Francis Cobb. Info I have is that he married Rosellen Torre (b1805 d1830) in 1827. The 1861 census names his wife as Maria and my gr.grandfather d.o.b.is 1842. The eldest daughter was named Rosellen E d.o.b.1836 which seems strange unless Maria was a very good friend of the first Rosellen!!! If anyone can shed some light on this it would be much appreciated.

An amazing site. I grew up in Capel-Le-Ferne and Folkestone between the years of 1949-1954 when I emigrated to New Zealand with my parents. I attended Capel-Le-Ferne Primary school in Capel Street, and after moving down to Folkestone from Capel, I went to another school of which I can't remember its name! Prior to my marriage, my maiden name was Ingram, and I would be very interested in any information in regards to the Ingram family, or the village of Capel-Le-Ferne, especially the school there during the early 1950s, as well as Folkestone. My grandparents were Mr Charles and Mrs Fanny Ingram. Also I had an uncle and aunty, Len and Peggy Ingram, who owned a small grocery store on the Canterbury Road in Folkestone for several years. They had two daughters who are my first cousins, Patricia ( known as Treesha ) and Marie. Unfortunately I lost contact with Treesha several years ago. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well-organised website.
I could not find a contact-you window.
Could you help me find Ken Hazelden? He had (has?) a shop at 50 Old High Street by the name of 'Tribes'. He used to get many materials for his shop in Chiang Mai - that's where we met ... about 10 years ago. A lot of things happen in a decade. I will try other channels as well, but if you know something that would help pointing in the right direction - great.
So long and thanks - Marc

I am doing research on my Warman family. I have come upon many Warman's in Folkestone and I have wonder if there is any connection between the Canterbury Warman's and Folkestone Warman's. My ancestors were Edward and Eleanor Marsh Warman. Two of their sons, George and Henry moved to Canada around 1830. They also had 3 other sons, Richard, John and Edward. I do not know what happened to them.
I would appreciate it if there is any Warman family member who would like to share the info they have and I will do the same. There is a Warman Family reunion in New Brunswick Canada on July 16, 2005 and I am trying to get some info together by then
I appreciate any help that anyone can give me.
Thank you

Hi.
Much of my childhood was spent in Folkestone as my Grandmother, Grace Coker, owned a boariding house, Casbon House at 14 Castle Hill Avenue. I lived there with my parents for a year before we moved to our own house at 30 Radnor Park Road. During this time I attended St Eanswythe's Primary School. My parents, Bill & Gwen Coker, myself and my brother left Folkestone in 1955 to move to Croydon. My Grandmother left Casbon House some years later to live at 11 Radnor Park Crescent. After he retired my father moved to Folkestone with my stepmother and they lived at 14 Hardwick Road until he suffered a stroke in 1997 aged 80 after which he was cared for at Bayham Grange.
My father first moved to Folkestone with his parents and elder brother Frank from Forest Hill, London to a house in Brockman Road. During the war Dad served in North Africa and Italy as a Captain in the RASC and my uncle was with the RAF. My granfather, George, had previously served with UK forces in the Middle East during the First War.
I spent many happy times as a child in the Rotunda and sorely missed Boating Pool when I was visiting my grandparents and I've always considered Folkestone as my 'anchor' (we moved around a lot with my Dad's job as a Public Health Inspector). My grandparents, Father, stepmother and uncle are all remembered in Folkestone Crematorium.
I have a great picture of my grandparents in the Bayle which must have been taken between the wars and also some of my great grandparents on my grandmother's side who came from Hougham not far from Folkestone. My Grandmothers maiden name was Hodgkin.
Regards
Ben Coker

Have just discovered your marvellous page! I hoped so much to find some infomation on my Folkestone family in your pages, but so far no luck...My grandfather was Charles Frederick Richards ( father - Stephen ). Charles was in the Buffs and was killed in France 3 May 1917. My grandmother subsequently married a Canadian soldier and emigrated to Canada with three young children, one of whom was my father. I have been unable to locate Charles' birth certificate ( probably 1887 or 1888 ) as he was 29 yrs. when he was killed. Would anyone be able to assist me ? Humble thanks.

Hi
I've signed the guest book for your wonderful site before (I visit it regularly, mainly for the 'Boxer' connection). I thought you might like to have the following information for the section on churches in Folkestone:
Father William Bathurst was the vicar at St. Saviours Church from, I believe, 1948 until about 1960. He was assisted by Father David Evans from the mid to the late 1950s.
I have happy recollections of being present at David's ordination in Canterbury Cathedral. Around that time he was known to some in Folkestone as the 'Rock 'n Roll priest', since he was not reluctant to frequent coffee bars, and sometimes tucked the skirt of his cassock into the belt of his jeans to jive at church hall socials and dances.
Between them William and David made St. Saviours a vibrant religious and social focus in the community, and had a lasting influence on many within it.
I left Folkestone in 1960 when my father was posted overseas, and understand that William retired to Broadstairs around that time, while David entered a monastery towards the end of the 1950s.
I hope this is of interest. Thanks again for the amazing site.

I am so excited to find this site! What a great resource you are!! My mother is now 77 years old. Her father (my grandfather!), Ross Frank Ames - born about 1900 - lived in Folkestone as a chld. Not sure if he was born there or not. He came to the U.S.(and stayed) at the age of 6 , or 11, again, we are not sure...with his mother Elizabeth Dowdy Ames(? Doudy? Daughty? don't know spelling)and father Frank Ames. He may have been a twin. Mother says children didn't ask questions and people didn't talk openly when she was young :-(
We have a SMALL handwritten note his father (Frank Ames - born May 26, 1866) wrote in 1945, listing addresses...writing impossible to decipher...
Mrs E. Ames, 36 Athelson (Athelstan?)Road
Mrs. E.H. Marsh, 6 Trimworth Rd
looks like.."Mifs"(miss?)E. Ames, Castle Hole, Sandgate
"Mifs" T.(L?F?J?)Ames, 25 Charlotte Street
"Mifs" L. Britton (?), 32 Wurstersmere (?) Ave, Brandisbury, N. W. London
Don't know if any/all these might be relatives...would be SOOO grateful for any info anyone might have. Thanks & keep up the good work!

One son, John raised his family in Elmsted and then children moved into Elham. I believe that John SPICER married Sarah Richards in Folkestone, thus my interest. I was looking a William Marsh's site for my MARSH connection and he referenced your site. So, here I am. I live in Flint Michigan USA. My 2nd great grandparents came to Michigan in 1905 with their son Ebenezer and his family.

Hi Penny,
Thought your listers might be interested in the following site which goes live from April 1st. The GRO have released all their index records for births, marriages and deaths from 1837 to 2001. This is a pay-per-view site, but the charges seem reasonable for trying to track down those elusive certificates - and maybe some present day 'cousins' as well.

I came to W A in June 1952,from Lydd,one of the #10 -00 migrants.
Hope to have my own website up and running this year.
Cheers
Vic.

My brother, Max Paton, has already left a message. I too grew up in Folkestone, and attended Folkestone County Technical College. Left 1957 I think or thereabouts. Would like to contact any "old girls" -- fond memories of a lovely town on the edge of the sea. Now live in Australia and my favourite pastime is looking for dolphins down at the beach in Terrigal, New South Wales. Was married and have three children. Grant lives in Joburg SA. Daryl lives in Melbourne and Tina lives in San Diego and has a new little baby girl called Emily who is nearly two months old.
I LURVE ENGLAND and will ALWAYS BE ENGLISH!!! Love to everyone, God Bless, Love Sandy xxx

I have a warm place in my heart for folkestone, as it has everything a boy with imagination could desire, winding smugglers streets, chalk cliffs full of treasurs old and new, fasinating beach front, with a glimps of other lands, and just back over shugarloaf the green southern downs.
This has always been my special place, inside my heart, which I have expressed through my music and my abiding deep love of history,

I have a Reverend Arthur Edward Low, in my family searches, who is listed as the vicar of St. John-the-Baptist in Folkestone Kent.
The reason Reverend Low is part of my search for Mum's mom and her missing family who was Audrey Alberta Turner Lowe is he is Audrey's first father-in-law. I found,in an Australian Archive, letters written by Reverend Low to Strand House asking for help to locate his missing daughter-in-law, Audrey Low or Mrs. A. Lowe or Audrey Alberta Turner. Reverend Low would also like to know if Audrey has obtained a divorce yet.
Mum's mom story was that she was a WW1 widow. Her husband, Arthur M. Lowe had died and she has been a VAD. Then the baby girl fell down the spiral staircase in the Lowe family mansion in Toronto, Ontario. about 1918-19. And that was why Mum's moved to Vancouver, BC and remarried.
Big but - the Venn's shows that Reverend Low never left England and between 1901 - 1923, he was at Folkestone.
After 1923, he was in Paddock Wood, Kent and that is where the letter I have comes from. So what Low family mansion in Toronto?
The story is much longer and even more confusing.
Could you please help me out with some answers: or where to find them: Doubly excuxe my ignorance, I from a small town in BC.
What is St. Johns? It sounds more like a convent from the bit I read? As the vicar, would Reverend Low has reason to travel to Port Sydney or Toronto, Ontario?
How could I find out if any Lows are buried at St. Johns?
Is there anyway you can suggest that I might find out about his family? He was buried in Parkston in 1936.
If the granddaughter and a son of the vicar both passed on would there be a newspaper archive?
So kind soul, here's hoping you can answer some of my questions. <big sheepish grin>

particularly stuck finding James FINN's baptism and parentage. He married 1. ELIZABETH GODDEN 1795 AND 2. ANN CARVEL, 1802.

Thanks to the article in this weeks Folkestone Herald about this web page, I have had a very enjoyable hour browsing through the site.
I came to live in Folkestone in 1947 and my family lived briefly with an aunt in Clarence Street. Very soon we managed to rent a house in Bradstone Road (The monkey puzzle houses), where we were lucky to live in a 'front' house.
I have many happy memories of the area, especially playing in the garage at the bottom of Clarence Street and Bradstone Road and the kindness of the three brothers who owned the garage. Their surname was French. They gave us local children a big room which was used as a tyre store at the back of the garage which we turned into a club room. From this room we could gain access to the Methodist cemetary which stood on high ground between 'The Brickfields' and Bradstone Road.
Thank you again, I shall be viewing again.

What promises to be an excellent site as more contributions are made. I wish I could but all I know is that my father(William Henry Marshall-1908-1981)came from a family of fishermen. His father, John Thomas (Tom) had 2 trawlers (one the Invicta) and they were related/connected to the Spearpoint family (along whose line he claimed there was once a female smuggler).
Anyway thanks for giving me some hope of finding something as I found some likely candidates in your lists.

Believe they may all link at some stage. If I find anything interesting on the Folkestone clan, will pass it on for your site.

I have just found this site and I must say how brilliant I think it is. Talk about walking down memory lane! I was born in Lyminge in 1955 and moved to Newington and then Cheriton during the 1960's and 1970's. I went to 2 schools in Folkestone; Christ Church Primary School Brockman Road and Folkestone Technical High School For Girls Coolinge Lane. My family owned the Blackbull Road Wines and Spirits. I left Folkestone when I was 24 when my Father died.
I am descended from the Brockman family who owned a great deal of the land in and around Folkestone up to the 19th Century. My own line of research is for the name STROUTS. John STROUTS married Helen BROCKMAN about 1620.
My Grandparents moved to Newington nr Folkestone in 1931. Their name was GLOVER. My Father's name was PILBEAM (I changed my name by deed poll), his family lived at Peene nr Folkestone.
There are so many names on this site that I recognise that I do not have time to look at them thoroughly now so I shall be returning soon.
I should love to hear from any one who, perhaps, knows any of the names I have mentioned or knows me. Chris

I enjoy your site very much, and I hope you find this interesting on what I know from my family heritage that has been passed down from generation to genteration... My last name Foxton was a derived from a Roman legionary commander/genral, Fogstone who came to England from Rome. Me and my family think that he might have been the one who settled Folkestone. If you have any other information on the Roman era of Folkestone, please e-mail me at AIWMadHatter@juno.com.
I also know of a small town near the area of Cambridge with the name of my sirname Foxton. Also and canal, and Mansion somewhere else in England. I would be more specific information, but the fact that I live in New York puts a damper on things.

Hello Penny,
I may have written to you before. I have just discovered you website afresh after having to reinstall Windows 98 and retrieving my favourite sites.
My paternal grandfather's mother was Lucy Spearpoint, and I have the Spearpoint family tree back to 1529, sent to my by a cousin in Australia. Her mother put all the information together, and other Spearpoint relatives put it on computer for her. There of many other names associated with the Spearpoints, Fagg, Baker, May, to mention a few. My grandfather's name was William Hurworth Bates. He was a cockney, but to my surprise and amazement, I discovered a some months ago, that his parents came from York. I have lived in York for 30 years and had no idea. I have, therefore, been able to research into the Bates and Hurworth families.
My grandfather joined the Royal West Kents when he was nineteen in 1899. He was posted to Dover, where he met my grandmother, they were married in 1904 and had 16 children, 10 of them surviving and living a full life. I think the other six died, either in childbirth or when very young. Four of the six were twins.
My grandfather was invalided out of the army in 1916 with TB. Probably a good thing, or he may not have survived the war. He died aged 80 in 1960.
Before the war my grandfather had a weighing chair on the sea front below the Leas. There was a photographer next door, providing us with quite a few photographs of that time, some of them of my mother and me as a toddler.
If I did write to you before, and gave you the same information, please forgive me. I will look at the rest of you website carefully, and hope to see some familiar names. I noticed just now, that there was a Spearpoint killed during WWI, and there was also a Spearpoint in the Business List.
Best Wishes
Barbara Crowther

EASTWICK/MAY/MANTELL/WILLS
Enjoyed browsing the site. I'm researching the Eastwicks, who featured heavily on the Four Brothers link that you have, together with their cousins, the Wills family. I'm looking for a later Eastwick, Owen J, who married one of the May girls atround the turn of the Century. There were so many Mays around the North Street area of Folkestone, I can't figure out which was the right one.
Is anyone researching the Mantell family - also another, earlier, Eastwick link in the 1700s.

Penny, Congratulations on an excellent (and growing) site. I first tried to view this when you advertised it on the KFHS maillist several months ago but for some reason wasn't able to get in - managed it today. I will try and find time to send you some data on my Folkestone families (RYE, FAGG, BURNES, AUSTEN in particular)

Interesting site! - Looking for details on the family of (Emily) Annivur Martha Dennard married to Henry Beer 8.11.1876 at Folkstone Congregational Church. Annivur, born in Ashford was living at 19 Princes St while Henry (b.1853 son of John Wood Beer, a fisherman) lived at 35 Fenchuch St.
I have extensive Dennard records back to the early 1700s including info on Annivur's uncle Thomas - a member of the Aldington Gang of smugglers. The whole gang were transported to Tasmania in 1826. Willing to share/exchange the info I have

Do you offer links to personal sites? My own family site is at http://www.gensite.co.uk/forbes - much of my family were born married or died in Folkestone over the years 1744-1973.
Keep up the good work!

My family hails from Newington Next Hythe, just outside Folkstone. They seem to have mostly been farmers, builders and inn keepers since at least 1735. In conjunction with my cousin Sarah, we are slowly building up a record of as many relations as we can. Any information about them or any of their connections would be gratefully received.

Thank you for posting this information. I have been researching the origin of my ancestor, William Tickner, who came to the United States in 1633 from England. Possibly he came from Tenterden, Kent. I was hoping to find some information about him before he came to the United States. He came as a child, about 12 years old, by himself. There is no reason given for this. That is why whenever I see any entries from Kent in England I check to see if there might be some information which I could use. Thank you again for posting this information.

I have been studying the life and times of John Fryer (1839-1928), who was born in Hythe, Kent. Fryer worked in China (1861-96) and became the most prominent translator of Western science and technology books into Chinese. In 1896 he became a professor of oriental languages at the U. of California, Berkley. He married Anna Roleston of Chudleigh in Peking in 1865. Some of his correspondence refers to friends from Hythe, Chudleigh, Bridge, and Folkstone. In the mid-1860s he corresponded with a cousin named Suzy Johnson and seems to have had a "mild" flirtation with her. I would appreciate any information on the Fryer, Roleston, and Johnson families of that era.
