Hello,
My name is Thomasa. I'm the great grand daughter of Rose Shangreau and Thomas O'Rourke. This site is truly amazing and have found some great information. I noticed that my Grandmother Sadie O'Rourke is not listed on the site. Just wanted you to know if you need that information I have it. I also did a DNA test and since I'm female it only picks up my grandmother's grandmother's grandmother's DNA thousands of years back. Which would be Grandma Rose Shangreau, to Louise Janis, to Martha He Bear (which was as far as I could go with my ancestry) Our common DNA, which was Haplo Group C, being Native American, had the most commonality with the Evenkys tribe that is located somewhere above Russia (I think Siberia), whom eventually came over the Bering Strait to America. Some of our ancestors didn't stop there and ended up in the very south part of South America. It was fun to find out where we came from years ago.
Keep up the great work,
Thomasa

Hello,
I am so grateful for all the hard work that was put into this site. Thank you. I'm Rosa Shangreau's great grand daughter, Rosa, daughter of Louise Janis and Julian Louis Shangreau. I found that Jewel Shangreau and Wyela?(Wind Breath per Pine Ridge records)are Julian Louis Shangreau's parents; both born around 1825. Does anyone have any information where Jewel Shangreau came from or who his parents are? Or who Wind Breath's parents are? I did find in a book "The Last Days of the Sioux Nation" that Louis Shangreau was a half breed and nephew of Woman Dress. I have found no such name as Shangreau in French or Canadian records, but the name Shangraw shows up(meaning something like vast land mass or open country). When Shangreau was written in the ledger or census box, a person can see how easy it is to confuse Shangreau with Shangraw as the eau- end up looking like aw in cursive. If anyone has any information on Wind Breath or Jewel Shangreau born around 1825, I would appreciate it very much. And hopefully a little of this information can help someone else.
Sincerely and good luck to all in your search for your ancestry,
Tommi Saenz Craddock

This is wonderful. This is the first and only site I have foundreguarding any one from the Dakotas. My father was born in 1931 in corson co., SD. He was adopted when he was three years old by a man named William E. Berry and moved to vandalia, Il. Where I was Born. I met my grandmother and an aunt when I was 28 years old. I have since lost track of the aunt and my grandmother has died. I Heard that I have a cousin that married a man named Littledog and I am searching.

Leaneagh Family History www.leaneagh.com
Every genealogist comes across a family that becomes more captivating and intriguing than the others. The Janis family is that one for me, mostly because of the time period they lived in and the records they left behind. I have been trying to put the story together by collecting these documents, church records, census, book articles, and other sources. Here is what I have so far.
1st generation: David, Alan, Joan, John, Elizabeth, Kathy, Sharon, Annie, Bobbie, Randy
2nd generation: Jerry, Jan, Bob
3rd generation: Del, Cherry
4th generation: Marie, George, Jesse, Susan, Benard, Francis
5th generation: Peter Lenagh and his wife Emilie Iott
6th generation: Sefroy Iott and his wife Eleonide Janis
7th generation: Antoine Janis, Jr. and his wife Marguerite Thibault
8th generation: Antoine Janis, Sr. and Marie Louise Dany
9th generation: Nicolas Janis and his wife Marie Louise Thamur dit LaSource
10th generation: Francois Janis and his wife Simone Brusseau
11th generation: Jean Janis and his wife Marie Paquet
I will start with the 3rd generation of this family.
Del Leaneagh was born 1897 in Valentine, NE, the son of George Foster Lenagh and Kittie (Elwell) Brandon. He married Arlouine Palmer on May 2 1931 in Bethany, MO. They had two children: Jerry Del Leaneagh and Arlouine Jan Leaneagh. Arlouine also had another child from an earlier marriage, Larry.
Cherry Leaneagh was born in 1898 and married Arthur Hooper in 1920. They had a son, Robert.
George Foster Lenagh was born somewhere in Iowa 1872, the son of Peter Lenagh and Emilie Iott. He lived in St. Charles, MO until the death of both of his parents, between 1880 and 1883. His grandmother Eleonide Iott brought the seven children to Northern Nebraska/Dakota Territory. He married Kittie (Elwell) Brandon about 1890 in Pittsburgh, PA. They lived in Valentine, NE and had two children: Adelbert (Del) Justin Leaneagh and Cherry Leaneagh. More about George
Peter Lenagh and his wife Emilie Sophie Iott are married in St. Louis, MO Nov 16, 1869. Emilie is the daughter of Sefroy Iott and Eleonide Janis. They had 6 children:
Marie
George
Jesse
Susan
Benard
Francis
This is the generation where the last name Leaneagh changed. Peter was from Ireland and he used at least these three spellings: Lenagh, Lenaugh, Leonard. My mother remembers Del telling a story that George was using Leonard when he was first married. Kittie learned that it wasn't the original spelling and asked that they go back to the original name. The first time I see the spelling is on the 1900 Federal Census for George and Kittie in Valentine, Cherry County, Nebraska. The spelling Leneaugh is used by his brother Jesse's family in the next county north of Valentine, in Mission, SD. Susan used both, while younger brothers Ben and Frank used Leonard.
Sefroy Iott and Eleonide Janis were married in St. Charles, MO on Feb 21 1838. They had three children: Marguerite Philomena Iott, Emilie Sophie Iott, and Marie Felicia Iott.
Marguerite Philomena Iott was born Dec of 1838 and died at 3 months.
Emilie Sophie Iott was born April 2 1840. More about Emilie here
Marie Felicia Iott was born April 8 1845.
Sefroy Iott was born Nov 29 1815 in St. Louis, MO. He left the family sometime between 1850 and 1860 by the census, and went to live near the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. More about Sefroy here.
Eleonide was born 1818, her parents are Antoine Janis, Jr. and Marguerite Thibault. More about Eleonide here.
Antoine Janis, Jr. married Marguerite Thibault in 1818. Antoine Janis Jr., born Dec 27 1798, is the son of Antoine Janis Sr. and Marie Louise Dany.
The St. Charles Genealogical Society has published Catholic Marriages 1792-1863. It lists Ante. St. Charles Janis, son of Ante. Janis and Marie Lse. Dany marriage to Margt. Thibaut, daughter of Joseph Thibaut and Therese Barada, May 31 1818.
The St. Charles Borromeo Church Parish records lists this: "The 31st of the month of May, 1818, we, the undersigned, (Eveque) Bishop of Louisiana have renewed the mutual consent of marriage and given the nuptial Benediction according to the rites of Our Mother of the Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church to the following five couples already legally united in front of a civil judge." View
They had eight children:
Marie Benard, born Nov 30, 1815 (two years before they were married)
Eleonide, born Oct 5, 1818
Marguerite, born Nov 8, 1819
Francis Regis, born Sept 27, 1822

Marguerite Thibault, born 1798, is the daughter of Joseph Thibault and Marie Theresa Barada. Joseph Thibault was born 1775, son of Joseph Thibault and Marie (Pawnee Indian). Marie Theresa Barada, born 1778, is the daughter of Antoine Barada and Marguerite Desrosiers. More about Marguerite Thibault here.

Joseph Antoine Janis, born Mar 26, 1824, he married Mary Featherman First Elk Woman in 1846. He died April 10 1890 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. They had 17 children per Mike Stevens at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mikestevens/JANIS/i0000165.htm#i165. This is an excellent site and he has done alot of work.
Nicolas Janis was born Oct 12, 1827, he married Martha He Bear on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He died Sept 13 1902 in Porcupine, SD. They had 9 children. His story is again well put together by Mike Stevens at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mikestevens/JANIS/i0000066.htm#i66
William Edmond Janis, married Margaret Ann Osgood on Aug 17, 1857. In 1860 they are living in St. Charles as a Farmer with two children; William, age 2 and Presley, age 3/12.
Euphenice, born Oct 24, 1832 and died the next year on Nov 19, 1833.
Antoine Janis Sr. married Marie Louise Dany. They had 8 children baptized at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Six of those eight lived long enough to marry.

Here is where it gets really interesting. Mary Louise Dany was a mulatto slave. I have three sources that talk about how much of a scandal this was for the time by violating accepted social behavior and publicly proclaiming his love and affection for her.

I have not found an actual marriage record of Antoine Janis, Sr. and Marie Louise Dany, but the baptism of their children at Borromeo claims it is of a legitimate marriage after 1809. I find it interesting that he married a Mulatto slave, had children with her and was also a slave owner.
I have scanned in all the transcriptions I have found from the St. Charles Borromeo Church Parish records for each of the children. As you can see, some have no father listed, but the mother is Marie Louise, free woman of color. After 1809 they are children of a legitimized marriage. She is listed as Partronne Libre (Liberated Patron). These children were probably 3/4 French and 1/4 Black.

1830: I was able to find a handwritten document at the St. Charles Genealogical Society of a gift of a slave from Antoine Janis, Sr. to each of his children just before his death. I had to put on white gloves and it was very exciting to see his 175 year old signature. This lists all his children alive in 1830: Antoine, Nicholas, Andil (Odille) Laurin, Marie Susane Cote, Mari Devien Tibaut, Felicite LeBeau. No matter how you feel about slavery, this is an important document for proving relationship. I have scanned it in and will transcribe it also. Scan of outside - page1 - page 2 - page 3 - Transcription
1832: In the St. Charles, MO Probate Court records is the Administrators Bonds 1827-1879 record for Antoine Janis, Sr., who died without a will. Antoine Janis and Nicolas Janis are the administrators along with William Pettus and Louis Lorain as securities. The lower half reads "This day personally appeared before me, the Clerk of the County, for the county of St. Charles, the undersigned Antoine Janis & Nicolas Janis, who being by me duly sworn, upon their oaths say that to the best of their knowledge, there are eight heirs of Antoine Janis, dec'd, now in being Marie Louise Janis, widow; Luceille Blain, Susan Cote, Antoine Janis, Nicholas Janis, Marie D. Thebeau, Andil Lorain, & Felecitie Lebeau, all residing in St. Charles County, and that to the best of their knowledge that the said deceased died without a will, as far as they know and believe, and that they will well and truly administer all and singular the goods and chattels, land and tenements, rights and credits, of the said deceased, and pay his debts, as far as the assets which may come to their hands will extend, and the law direct; and that they will make a true and perfect inventory of all the goods and chattels, rights and credits, of the said deceased, and account for and pay over, according to law, all assets which shall come to their hands, possession or knowledge.
Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 24th day of March, 1832" - view the document here
This is the time that it gets a little fuzzy. There are many Antoine Janis listed in the records, so it is hard to follow. I may not have it accurate, but the years work out and it is the most possible to me.
I have two trouble areas:
1. I have found the records for 3 children of Marie Barada and Antoine Janis, Sr. being born at the same time the children of Mary Louise are being born.
Maximillien Janis was born 1812, the natural child of Antoine Janis, Sr. and Marie Baradas. View
Marie Francoise Janis, born Aug 1814, parents: Antoine Janis and Marie Barada, widow Liban recorded at the St. Ferdinand de Florissant Church in Florissant, MO (close to St. Charles, MO) View
the marriage of Jean Baptiste Janis, son of Marie Barada and Antoine Janis to Louise LaCroix in 1832. View
I have not found any evidence of a marraige between Antoine Janis, Sr. and Marie Barada, but I have added this as a second family group for Antoine Janis, Sr. These children are not listed on the above Gift Document of 1830 or the 1832 Administrator Bond as in the listing of the heirs of Antoine Janis, Sr., so this could a different Antoine Janis, Sr., maybe the one below.
2. The Kaskaskia, IL records list an Antoine Janis being born Feb 20 1781, his parents are Antoine Janis and Angelique LaPlume, Indian woman. View baptism record
The registers of the Church of the Conception of Our Lady, Kaskaskia, IL 1724-1834 has this marriage listing:
JANIS, Antoine son of Antoine & Marie Anne (? illegible) age 40 years, native of New Orleans, to Angelique LAPLUME, an indian woman. Their children, Marie Victoire and Antoine are legitimized by this marriage. April 30 1781. . . . Who is this family, where do they fit in and what is the connection to New Orleans? View marriage
Antoine Janis, Sr. is the son of Nicolas Janis and Marie Louise Thamure dit LaSource. They were married in Kaskaskia, IL in 1751. They had eight children according to the early records: Remember that Lewis and Clark explored the West, leaving from St. Charles, MO, in 1804 to explore the Louisiana Purchase. View baptisms
Felicite, born 1752, married Vital Beauvais
Jean Baptist, born 1759, married Renie Barbeau
Francois, born 1761, married Pelagie Bienvenue
Marie Francoise, born 1763, married Laurant Durocher
Antoine (Sr.), born 1765, married Marie Louise Dany, also had children with Marie Barada
Jean, born 1767, no other info yet.
Nicolas, born 1772, no other info yet
Marie Catherine, born 1774, married Etienne Bolduc
Nicolas Janis, the father of the above children, is the one that built the house in Ste. Genevieve, MO that still stands. It is also known by "the Green Tree Tavern" or "the Ziegler House"
The transcription of the marriage record in Kaskaskia, IL for Nicolas and Marie Louise reads:
JANIS, Nicolas, son/ Francois & Simon Brussart to Marie Louise Thamure dau/ Jean Baptist & Marie Rivard. 27 Apr 1751. View
Francois Nicolas Janis married Simone Brussart in Trois-Rivieres (Three Rivers), Quebec, Canada Nov 14, 1704. They had eleven children, with Nicolas being the last one born Jan 7, 1720. There is also some discrepency about this person also. There are records in Quebec that show that this Nicolas was born in Quebec, married Therese Meloche, had 11 children, and died in Quebec. I am still looking for the answer to this question. The Nicolas that was married in Kaskaskia, IL knows that his parents are Francois and Simone (Brussart) Janis.
Most of the online and book sources have the above Francis Nicolas Janis have him born in France of the parents Jean Janis & Marie Paquet, d'Argenteuil, Champagne, France. I have not seen any documentation or proof of this, but I will list this as it is the most commonly listed parents.

A genealogy person by name of Susan Murphy (Annajoe@aol.com)has discovered, and sent copies to me, much information in the Family Search (LDS) library in Salt Lake City. The file by Pat Smith has copies of filed documents sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C. containing signed and notarized statements by Chief Red Cloud, Shot in the Eye, Ed.Two Two, Peter Livermont, and Mary Merrival.
These statements show the relationship of Chief Red Cloud, and his mother Walks as she Thinks, with Chief Crow Feather. One of these statements says "My mother was a sister of my Uncle Crow Feather. . .One of my cousins was Her Many Pipes aka Winula married a white man called Long White Man or Chancellor, who had 5 daughters. One daughter Juli or Julia married Peta or Peter Longmont". The Her Many Pipes is also known as Mary Iron Cedar and the White man is Olivier LeClaire. I believe I have allready sent you a copy of the Grave marker of Mary Iron Cedar.
I was wondering if you would like a copy of all of these documents, as it would add some additional good information to your wonderful web-site.
I am involved with this family through my Brother who married a Leora LeClair, a descendent of Mary Iron Cedar.
Please let me know, as this is on a CD and I could mail it to you if you want it.

I'm looking for someone who can help me or refer me to someone who can. I'm looking to gain nothing but family. I was adopted out as was my mother. So far I have found a sister & aunt, both adopted as well, and in no state to help. My name prior to adoption was Krista Suzzann Armour (probably my mother's adopted surname) Her name is Nancy, she would have been born in the early 50's, and taken away at about age ten (I'm told because her parents wouldn't send her to the schools) She was born on Standing Rock. I'm hoping that someone, somewhere will remember this. I'd like to know my family. I live a good clean life with my husband (Mohawk Nation) and our 4 children. We don't need money or funding or government cards, just the other half of our children's roots. If you can direct me to someone who can help email me & title it "for Beth". Needing any information on my great grandmother Sofia Sauve (I am 57 years old, if that helps at all). She was married to Alfred Sauve; we were told that her maiden name was Bissonette. My uncle could not tell us much about her. They were not allowed to discuss her when they were young because she was Native American and could not read or write. Sad, but that is all we've been told. Who was this woman my grandmother and the rest of the family never told us about - part of me is missing......I feel a sadness for her.

Firstly, I would like to sincerely apologize if I offend you Michael and other relatives of the Jumping Eagle family. It is not my intention to do so. But I am a friend of Richard Leon Brown Jnr, also a grandson of Josephine Jumping Eagle and son of Vae Rose. I'm sure you are well aware of his circumstances at present, so I do not need to elaborate, but he has asked me to do some 'research' on his family line, finding photos etc to compliment the bits that were given to him by his 'Uncle Bill', as he put it. Thats how I stumbled across your guestbook Michael. I am not specifically asking for any information but, in short, all I just wanted to say was having read the family history given to me by Richard, I think you have a truly remarkable family :)
With kind regards
Lorraine Evans

I am glad I found this site. I have been working on my genealogy very hard since Oct. of 2005. When I started, all I knew was that, I was a descendant of a 4/4 Oglala named "TOP OF THE HEAD" or, "PECOKAWIN". She was my G.G. Grandmother and married a non-Indian named "DANIEL (Dan)A. POWELL". Therefore, Daniel was my G.G. Grandfather. <br>The Ghost Town of Powell, SD (located on the "Bad River") formally known as, Wokama was named after him. <br>Since then, I've found a lot more. For Example; <br>"PECOKAWIN'S" mother was a 1/2 sister to "CHEIF SPOTTED TAIL'S" widow no.2, a.k.a., "FANNIE CHARGING EAGLE." <br>This may be the "Unknown" you have listed. ??? <br>If anyone has any information that could help me, please feel free to contact me. <br>I thank you for all of your hard work and this is truely a nice site. Hopefully, you will contact me. <br>Later, <br>Kim

I found Antonio Lujan on the 1880 Huerfano County Census and he was married to Maria Francisca (Good Cow). They had Vicente, Placido, and Margarita. Margarita married Juan Pablo Maes and she is listed as a full blood on the 1880 Huerfano County Census and her parents are Antonio Lujan and Maria Francsisca. There is some confusion as to who Good Cow and Red Track are and I think I have the correct information. Good Cow was known as Maria Fransisca, Francisca de Baca, and Machile de Baca on various documents. Please contact me if you are interested in this information.

But I'm curious to find out who my great-great grandma's (Hattie Eldridge who later married Rueben Clifford) parents were. I can't seem to find any Eldridges with my great-great grandma's name in it. I've heard stories about her mom (my great-great-great grandma) but I don't know her name and would like to know. I'm proud to say I'm the great-great grandson of Big Bat Pourier and the great-grandson of the respected Moses Runs Against. Keep up the good site!

The famous American painter, Joseph Henry Sharp, produced a portrait of an Oglala woman by this name, although I am not positive that she is the same person. Does anyone have information on her? I found a Medicine Horse family listed. My Great Grandmother, Ptenapewin, had a brother named Medicine Horse. She was born in 1848 and the Medicine Horse listed at your site was born in 1856. Both her and her brother came to South Dakota but what happened to Medicine Horse is not known. Great site you have here.

Hello,
I sent you some information a few years ago on the Virginia ancestry of General Richard Brooke Garnett, father of William "Billy" Garnett. I have since compiled a great deal more information on his family, especially his mother, Anna Maria Brooke. The Brooke family, if anyone is interested, is descended from British royalty.
As our ancestors gave freely, so do I. My information is available to anyone who wants it. The file is quite large now, however; probably too big to email. Anyone willing to share their snail mail can have my entire database on CD. I don't even charge for postage. Please email me if you're interested or if you would like to exchange info.

I am researching the Ruhkamp history in South Dakota. I was looking for the Scissons line connected to our Great Grandmother's line through the Tom C. Scissons & Alvina Jandreau lines that comes on down through Thomas Henry Scissons then to Beverly Alvina Scissons in which married Jean Louis Ruhkamp. In looking at John Cubert Scissons line, I noticed the Theresa Scissons as well and she married a Miller.
In your menu you have a Lakota Link established and I just about fell out of my chair. I had recently watched the 3 week televison premiere series, "Into the West" and their portrayal of the Lakota Indian Tribe. I must say that my curiosity was really stirred up to try to see if any of these people's bloodlines were from the Lakota Tribe.
Your site is very nice and I found that it was neatly arranged as well as informative.
Sincerely,
Donna Walters

I have found articles on where Napoleon and Mary Rose Bissonnette are supposedly buried but to no avail. St. Rose Catholic Church, Perrysburg, Ohio has no records on Mary Rose. I will continue my endeavor. I have a picture of Napoleon and Mary Rose and family. Mary Rose Lapalme looks very native american. I could be wrong, though.

I want to know if there was a Dorothy Stevens that had a son in or around July 7, 1945. The child was either stolen or adopted out. Also, if there are any Mills with the same story. I was raised on the east coast(Maryland/Pennsylvania area). My earliest memories are of Nuns in Catholic orphange, school, or church. I was raised under the last name of Stanton, later they changed only my name to Mills, and then the social security office has my birth mother listed as Dorothy Stevens.
I look nothing like any of the people that raised me. I recently sent my photo to Diane of the "Lost Birds" and she says that I "totally look Lakota". I am hoping that someone will know. Please email me if you have any info.

Han ~
I am Melissa, born on Pine Ridge 21 December 1955. I was paid for with CASH and moved to Los Angeles, CA. I have almost NO information to go on, and my birth certificate offers very little. As my dear Lakota friend says, "Someone, somewhere, knows something." I know my birth Mother is/was Lakota, and, it is my understanding that my birth Father was either half or three quarters Lakota -- other than this, and hearing my Mother's voice all the time, speaking to me in Lakota, is all I have to hang on to. A woman was pregnant with me for 9 months, then, she was NO longer with child -- I am this child, and I would dearly love to find both she and my birth Father, along with birth brothers and sisters!! This would simply be too kool for mere words!!
I am hoping that someone reading this knows something -- I am more than ready!!

Mike--my 2 middle [of 4] daughters married descendents of Gertrude[Bobbie] Pourier Brafford and Ione Pourier Stover, the 2 youngest daughters of Peter Pourier and Hattie Standing Bear. I have made myself welcome to the work you have done for my grandchildren's benefit and can add quite a bit, I believe to that branch of your family tree if you are interested. Also, are you aware that Pete's oldest daughter, Mary Alvina [Lovie] is still living? I would make an effort to interview her if you are interested.
