I've started a new driving route for work and go through Swicord, GA south of Bainbridge. I was struck by the apparent previous posperity of the place and the defunct Post Office.
Next time I go through, I will take a camera and post for anyone interested.
The things that amazed me were the contrasts between old and new.

I have a small plate or soap dish (5" x 3") with a drawing of "D.W. Swicord General Merchandise" store and the same name printed under the drawing. It looks old, the gold paint on the detail work has mostly faded, however the color drawing of the building and trees is very clear. There is no other identifying marks on the plate. I can email a picture if you are interested in this item.

My 2ggmother Missouri Ann HARRELL married Michael SWICORD in Decatur Co., Ga. on 13 Aug 1857. They had one possibly two children. A son named "Lum" Columbus SWICORD was born abt 1860. According to Missouri's gdau.(Sedar Long White) Lum was subject to seizures. He usually could tell if one was coming and he would position himself so that he would not be hurt. However when he was 20yrs. old he was visiting and bedded down in an out building. He died during the night. I found Columbus Swicord on the 1880 Decatur Co., Ga. census. Michael supposedly fought in the civil war and came home, but died a short time after. Missouri Ann HARRELL SWICORD then married Franklin Wheeler LONG. They were my 2nd ggparents. They were married in Decatur 4 Feb 1866. Their marriage was entered twice at the courthouse. There may have been a dau. named Mary.?

Elizabeth married James 'Washington Dennison and had three girls Josephine, Caroloine and America. Two boys Charles and William. Elizabeth had a brother mnames Little or big John or George I cant remember. She was related to Lawrence White. I have herd grandma talk about the whites dont know where they tie in. I have a picture of Elizabeth Swicord Dennison.

Nathan's (who past in 1952) oldest son Edward George Swicord had 5 children: Paul, Karen, Steven, Janet and Christine. Edward lives in West Islip, NY. I currently live in Anchorage, Alaska under my married name Bidwell.

You did a nice job with the website--I'm glad to have found it. I'm the GG Grandson of Sallie (Haynes) Perry, who married George Matthew Swicord after the death of her first husband. It was the second marriage for George as well. I was unaware of when George was born until I found it on your site--now I see they married when he was about 71 and she was 60. Obviously, George's children were all grown up by then, as were Sallie's, and they had no children together. Although I'm not a blood relative of the Swicords, I found it very interesting to make the connections between our families.

M.J. Swicord, Jr. is my Grandfather- the son of MJ Swicord. I find this all very interesting. You've done a wonderful job on your web site. It made it very easy to trace my family back. I must tell you, I was a little shocked to see that my Great Grandfather MJ was married prior to being married to my Great Grandmother, Winnie. My husband Ronald Moore Swicord has an uncle, MJ Swicord Jr, he lives in Bainbridge GA. Ron's Grandfather was MJ Swicord Sr., his great grandfather was George W. Swicord. MJ Swicord Sr, had three sons; MJ, Wilmer Moore and John Carroll. Ron's dad was Wilmer Moore born 9-26-27 and died 11-14-2000, he had two children with his wife Lillian Wren, Ronald Moore and Barbara Ann. Ron has three children with me Dorothy Mae (Arndt) Swicord; Colby Ann, Stacie Lynn, and Scott Michael. Barbara is married to Ross James Thompson they have one child Miles Swicord Thompson. what a surprise to find Gr.Aunt Ruth on the Web.....I can still remember her crochet hook flying.....and she made the best biscuits......& I still laugh when I remember her telling about the time Doodles (Dewey) fell off the porch into the rosebushes......I hope some of my "long lost" Harried descendant relatives get this & will correspond with me at the above E.Mail.......our family has some information on the Harried's ---- as you know, the name has almost died out.......& we're trying to tie Gr.Grandma Jalina into the line with Boone of famous name....her mother was Susan Powell and Gr.Gr.Grandma Susan's mother was a Boone....I remember my Grandma Fannie Mae, & her sisters Viva & Ruth talking about the exploits of some ancestor......haven't been able to make a definite tie in but the name Susan keeps popping up on the Boone genealoby.....the Ellis clan is another story.....they skipped across the USA intermarrying with the Boone clan all the way....anyway...to anybody who is interested in our common ancestry........would love to hear from you. And Grace Fannin.....if you get this....I'm the little girl you used to play with when you, your mother & Aunt Ruth came for those Sunday visits to your Gr.Aunt Fannie's house....remember the time we got into trouble after eating those tomatoes & leaving the salt shaker on the fallen tree where we had been playing while we wandered up that branch run.....boy did I ever get a switching after your all went home !!!!!

Like Chuck, I find the timeline and geography are very similar to my CROUT line. Also some of the names that our family liked to 'recycle'.
They lived in the Orangeburgh District. Jacob Crout lost his life in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Brier Creek (GA). His wife was also named Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). The story is that she hid from the soldiers in the swamps, saving only her children and the family Bible. Inside the Bible the name also appears as Kroutwell. And they had a son named Michael. Our line left for KY about 1800, and then on to Indiana about 1828.
