My Grandmother was born and raised down around the Richmond area..She left there when she went to nursing college near Washington DC. It also seems they all left from there to live in the DC area where I was raised.....Every now again I search for family history on the Howe's which is My Father's Mother.....I do remember some stories about the Howe's owning quite a bit of land with orchards and other crops..There are other stories about them as being cattle drovers and also were in the cattle business...Other stories include that my side of the Howe's had some attachment to the Mohawk Indians....My Father says his Mother could speak some Indian and count in the language....I really wish there was a way for me to find this connection to the Mohawk's....I'm thinking maybe they wanted to keep it a secret as for that part....Grandma was very prim and proper and spoke in a way sometime as though she came over from England but this isn't so because that would most likely be common knowledge and there's many many pictures and because of the stories it could not be...It seems all of my family branch's have been here for a very long time especially the " Goode " side because we have the paper trail back to Barbados in 1632 and then into the Virginia Colony in 1652, a long time ago..I'd really like to solve the mysteries of the Howe family! and move onto my Mother's Family..

Doing all this research has kinda made me a Lay historian because along this path have found many contradictions to our past written history of this country pertaining to what we've been taught in school....

I assume Hicks was the artist and the number is its location in a sequence of drawings. Here I sit in Maryland thinking of my hometown, Red Hook. Seeing the pictures really brought back many memories. I remember as a little girl, standing on those "big" white marble steps at the Red Hook Drug Store, waiting for cars to come by...and my dad, Maynard Ham Sr., taking me to Bud's Bar, next to a grocery store, near the bank. Bud had a bright red counter and Dad would get a beer and I would get an orange soda.
thanks for the memories.

Roxy,
We exchanged e-mails about a year ago on my family the Nichols. As you may be aware my father Clarence "Bud" Nichols passed away in April of 2002 and his sister Doris passed in August 2002. I would still like to know when the Berringer family reunion is help in NY. I would like to attend and see what relatives I can find that I didn't know I had. Unfortunatly with the passing of Aunt Doris a lot of information about the family passed with her. She could look at a picture that was 50 or 60 years old and know who everyone in it was. Oh well please let me know any information you may come up with on the reunion.... Thanks.

Your site put everything in place for me. In my grandmother's Bible were the names of Peter P.Barrenger and Sarah M. Constable and some dates. But no relationships were listed. No one seemed to know who they were. I could guess that they were John's parents but there was no proof. I could go back only as far as my great grandfather, John Ennis Barrenger (yes the spelling has changed. John married Louisa Margaret Bell from Ulster. They had 4 children: Nancy, Sarah, Lewis (my grandfather), and Fammie. They lived in Wisconsin. Once I had your information, I found all sorts of info in the census, etc. I especially appreciate the photos of tombstones. The tombstones of Joseph & Margaret Bell are the grandparents of Louisa Bell. Thank you so much! How do I get a copy of your grandmother's book "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches"?

I have traced my great-grandfather to Poestenkill, N.Y., in Rensselaer Co. just east of Albany. He was married to Marie Whyland., and they moved to Clarkson (Union) in the mid 1800's. Since your family is jsut south of this area (Rensselaer), there may be some connection. I didn't see any names I recognized, but there may be something. This is as far back as I've gotten so far, but have really just started with the information that I have.

What names are you researching? Barringer & Personeus
Comments:
My brother, Neal, forwarded this to me and it's so exciting! Our father, Arlington M. Personeus, is one of the eleven children of Hattie & Lester Personeus. Hattie was a daughter to Freeman Barringer. A woman named Mrs. Dorothy (Dot) Smith of 129 Hurley Avenue, Kingston, NY was invaluable in assembling some family genealogy for my uncle, Lester Personeus, Jr. (Colonel, retired)in the early 1980's; I have a paper copy with balck and white photo reprints of some Barringer family shots. Dot is the daughter of Bertha (Barringer) Van Kleeck; Bertha was one of Hattie's sisters. As Dot is (or was at that time) treasurer of the Ulster County Genealogical Society, then I imagine you have already drawn from that source. I was so excited to write that I haven't fully explored the website yet. My dad, Arlington (aka "Olly" is living in a nursing home in the town next door and just turned 75 on 10/2/01. I'll have to bring a laptop there and try to log on to share this (he suffers from dementia but, as is typical, can draw from past memories much better than recent). Looking forward to sharing this with the surviving siblings to my father (if any are on-line)and interested cousins (of which there are many). Thanks for finding this Neal!!!!

What names are you researching? Simmons, Vannetter
Comments:
Very nice site! My ggggrandfather John Simmons was born in Dutchess Ct in 1812, moved to Hannibal, NY in 1842, and died in 1898. We believe our line emigrated from Germany in the 1790's. I wonder if your most distance Simmons relative is a brother or 1st cousin to mine? Nice pictures!

Sent you other e-mails through Family History.com. I can get you in touch with the granddaughter of William Schneider, Jr. who is about 75 yrs. old. She is very anxious to share with you what she has. She remembers as a child going to Lake George, Ny and playing in the boats that Wm. Triebel III made as a hobby in his garage in Redhook. She does not have e-mail so I can send you snail mail address if you e-mail me back. My mother and she are cousins through the Wachtel line. Anxiously awaiting your reply. She will be thrilled if she could get copies of the pictures you have posted here.

Wish more people would put photos on their sites!! I will keep watching for more information. My Elijah Simmons was born in NY in 1803 and "orphaned at an early age." Very possible that he came from Dutchess County.

I was curious as to where your Simmons orginated from. Mine have an English back ground, dating back to Leyden Holland, where they lived about 10 years before coming to Plymouth colony in 1621 on the Ship Fortune. Thanks.
