Thanks for the incredible information. I've wondered about my families past, Intangible culture and natural heritage. I've relied on word-of-mouth genealogy with West Virginian lineage. After living overseas of USA I'm guessing that the "Name" is Russian. I was always told by my kin that we were German. Looks like there are a helluva lot of Hudspeth's out here in the world.

It's so good to have this sight. I am African-American and my family is from Dumas, AR. I know that my great-grandfather's name was Shed or Shade Hudspeth. The only children I know of are Clarence, Perle (male), and Joe Hudspeth. Joe married Carrie Bentley. Carrie's parents were David and Emma Bentley. Her siblings were Chester, Richard, David, Arthur, and Merle. Joe and Carrie had 8 children: Emma, Alice, Frankie (female), Bernice, Sadie, Carl, Earl, and Otis. Otis married Geraldine McClain and they had 8 children. Lawrence, Peter, Linda, Otis Jr., Candy, Sandy, Russell, and Robin. Lawrence married Janet Thomas and that's where I come in.
I would love to find any and all information on my family. If you know the Hudspeth or Bentley family please feel free to contact me. Thank you

I always thought we had a rather small and dull family history until my father found Anna Ford’s books and did some research. While overseas, I also did some looking into our past.

Some of you have expressed an interest in where the Surname Hudspeth came from. The furthest back I have been able to research is a small sheep farm in the north of England. The owner said that the house was in the Hudspeth family for 600 years prior to his family, the Arthurs, owning it for the last 100 years. I must point out that Mr. Arthur was a very nice man and I must have bugged him silly by visiting unannounced several times.

In North Umberland, find New-castle-upon-tyne. Near by is Durham. Go west from New-Castle towards Hexham on the A69 to Corbridge and take the A68 north. South of Rochester the A68 meets the A696. Head east to Otterburn. Continue east to Elsdon. On the UK Mapquest, you can see a small white line headed east from Elsdon. The Hudspeth house is at the end of that line. There are many ruins nearby, making me think that the Hudspeth house was once part of a small community. Anna Ford's books show a picture of the house, but for some reason, the picture is reversed.

The name Hudspeth is translated as Richard's, or Hugh's, path. It is a place name. If you were asked who you were, you might reply, I am John from Richard's Path. Hudd is a nick name, like Dick, from the name Richard and Hugh. So you might shorten it to John of Hudd's Path, or John Hudspath. Path/Peth were a local variation of the same word, spelling not being very consistent back then.

At one time, Elsdon was some kind of county seat, complete with Moat-and-bailey castle. The family moved south to Hexham, Corbridge and Durham. The Hudspeth's saw their greatest fame in North Umberland around Corbridge. We received a crest, but no coat-of-arms. Argent, a Griffin Segant holding a spear enfiled with a boars head erased. (White, a griffin {Eagle head with Lion body} holding in it's claws a spear with a boar's head stuck on the end, it's neck ragged) The crest was given to us by the Earl(?) of New Castle, but taken away by King Henry the Eighth.

I did find Prior Mains, a mansion house that Hudspeth's lived in when one was Mayor/judge(?) of/in Corbridge. That was the good side of the family. The other side lived in "The Hole" which is also in Corbridge. Anna Ford's books detail some of this, and my father, T. Brian Hudspeth, has also written a book with this and other family legends.

South of Corbridge is a creek called Devil's creek. The Hudspeth's were taxed to pay for the upkeep of the bridge. The two brothers refused and had to leave the country. One came over by passage, while the other came as an indentured servant. they arrived on the same boat in South Carolina(?). My father could tell you more about the story.

Hudspeth's arrived in 1735(?) fought in the Revolutionary war, so we can join the DAR. Hudspeth’s prospered and were old money folks. Six Hudspeth brothers fought in the Civil war, one died as a prisoner in New Jersey. They were slave owners, and they fought for the South. Just prior to the Civil War, the Hudspeth’s sold all their property, intending to move to Kansas City. The war broke out, and knowing their cause was just, they raised a company, i.e. invested it into a company of solders. Now you know why most of us are poor today.

After the Civil War, we still fought on in Missouri. Look up Jesse James and Quantrill’s raiders. Hudspeth’s rode with the James gang and helped Quantrill. A Hudspeth served in the Texas Senate and had a county named after him. Hudspeth’s discovered a pass on the trail to California, search online for Hudspeth Pass.

My grandmother was named Selma Beulah Hudspeth until she married my grandfather, William Denning Goddard. I know her father's name was James Murphy Hudspeth and her mother's name was Sarah Ann Baker. She had 6 brothers and 1 sister. The names I know are Verl William, born Oct.13, 1913, Gerald Murphy, born may 28, 1928, Bulah Selma, born on Feb. 18, 1909, Eula Ann, 1907, James Archie, born 1895?, and Ralph, born 1902, Roy, unknown, and Audie A., unknown. This was my grandmother's family as I know it. Uncle Archie, had a daughter named, Didama, after his grandmother. I know that uncle Murphy died under mysterious circumstances in the 70's. Some said he shot himself, but Grandma never believed that. She thought it had something to do with his removing his wife's name, Nell, from all of his holdings, because he had discovered she was having an affair, and was going to divoce her. Aunt Eula came down with Alhiezmers and couldn't function. The last time we saw her, was when we went to May fest. The family has a special gathering at Aunt Drucilla's farm where the family graveyard is at. I met my Great-great aunt Nellie. She thought I was my grandma's daughter because I looked just like her. Aunt Eula thought my daughter, who was 8 months at the time, was her daughter Betty. It was a good trip, but also sad, because Grandma knew that that was the last time she would ever see her sister. Aunt Eula had three children, Charles, Mike, and Betty. Charles became a judge, Mike was an airforce pilot, and Betty was a homemaker. Does any of this sound familiar? I hope so. Please email me back, if you have any recollections of this. Thanks so much! Lisa

Her father was Dr. Leonidas Hudspeth and his father was Henry Street Hudspeth and so on. I am having trouble keeping everyone straight since they repeated names alot...but eventually I will get there. I never really knew my father's side of the family, which is where the Hudspeth's come into play, so this is very exciting.

Would love to hear from you. My email is darkstar5@mchsi.com

I see Thomas Brian Hudspeth II has been here. He's my nephew by marriage. Looking for information on Margaret Hudspeth, married William Moore, lived in Madison Co, KY. Margaret was born about 1725, Surry Co, NC, daughter of Ralph, Jr. and Mary Carter. Not sure which William Moore was her husband yet. It appears at this late date that I may be a Hudspeth descendant as well as having married Richard Bruce Hudspeth, descendant of Ralph, Jr. and second wife Catherine, maiden name unknown. Does anyone have any information on Margaret and William Moore of Madison Co, KY? I do have abstracts of their wills. Any info appreciated.

I found your web site by typing in Nancy Chastain and found my ggg grandfather John A. Hardwick listed has Nancy's husband. I knew that he was married to Nancy but did not know that John and Nancy had lived in Scott County, Arkansas (now in Logan County, Arkansas) We did not know why my great grandfather John E. Hardwick and family moved to Chismville, Logan County, Arkansas after 1901 and and left all of his family in Oregon County, Missouri.
John A. must have told stories to his grandson John E. Hardwick about the valley in the area.
