I am married to a Marschalk. His grandfather immigrated to America from Elmlohe/Bederkesen (excuse the misspellings of the German Cities, I don't have them in front of me.) One of the Marschalk's married a Hildebrandt. There is even a Luer Hildbrandt in Augusta, Georgia! Interesting since I saw your photo of another Luer! You all are most likely related. Many Hildebrandt's and Marschalk's are still in Augusta. The Hildebrandt's have a food store and deli in town that is a popular favorite. Louann Hildebrandt manages the store--fourth generation! Her brother is Luer. Dr. Fred Marschalk knows the family geneology as well as LouAnn. I'm trying to learn and research.

Hello "Over There"
Sometimes, when I'm coming to a standstill in my genealogy, I simply Google some names, and today there was a hit at Ebbe Erichsen (Your ID: I0544) He is 4x grandfather of my aunt Karen Smed. She is 75 year old and she is living in the northern part of Jylland:Balling, Salling just a few km avay from Sonder Andrup.
Actual I have 3 cousins with families, who are living in British Columbia, Canada - surnames Smed!
Best wishes and thankyou for your beautiful work with genealogy.

Hi Cherilyn:
Yes, Bradley Scott is a 3rd cousin twice removed of Bruce Hildebrandt since his grandfather Richard Fienen is a third cousin (actually a double third cousin by way of the Engelken and the Klintworth line - Richard's mother and father were themselves second cousins). I am Richard's first cousin; my mother was his Aunt Lina Emma (Klintworth) Lessman (a sister to his mother Marie). Richard is not only my first cousin but was also my sponsor at baptism (only one left). Please go over and give each of Betty and Richard a great big hug for me!
This geneology stuff is very interesting. Both your mother-in-law Sheryl and Rayanne Gartner are on the staff at Zion School. Their respective husbands (Mark Fienen and Stanley Gartner) are fourth cousins and I would bet that they didn't know that. Again, Richard Fienen and Richard Gartner are third cousins by way of the Engelken/Klintworth connection. Richard Fienen's grandfather Peter Klintworth and Richard Gartner's grandmother Maria (Engelken) Lange were first cousins since their respective mothers were sisters Catharina (Oelers) Klintworth and Margaretha (Oelers) Engelken. So Mark Fienen and Stanley Gartner share great-great-great grandparents Hinrich and Catharina (Burfeind) Oelers.
Another interesting place to look is to google a German fellow named Stefan Eckoff. Or, just google "Richard Fienen geneology" and go from there.
Regards, Roger (Bradley's first cousin, twice removed)

Down the tree from Hildebrandts - Hanover to New Amsterdam to Northeast Pennsylvania to Missouri (Think this line is without Cherokee indian blood although there are Hildebrandts who moved to North Carolina and intermarried in Cherokee Nation and were part of Trail of Tears) This thought flies in the face of local current wisdom on Hildebrandt - One was a Confederate Guerilla in Missouri and the subject of much information/misinformation - Has a book which he reputedly dictated on the Civil War activities.

My particular line of Hildebrandts were living in the Mobile, Alabama area in the late 1800's and early 1900's. My father, John Henry Hildebrandt (with whom I am living), was born 07 Oct. 1914 in Mobile, AL to Edward Harmon Hilderbrandt and Mattie Elizabeth Peel. Dad turned 90 this past October and is doing great. He gets around fine and is still mentally sharp! He has a sister, Mildred, who married her 3rd husband about 3 years ago when she was 91! Edward Harmon Hilderbrandt was the son of Henry Herman Hildebrandt and Mary Lyons. Herman was born somewhere in Germany and the story is told that he came to this country with his father, Heinrich, when he was about 5 yrs old. I just started doing some family history on this line and hope to find these illusive folks. But I'd be happy to hear from anyone who thinks they may be related somewhere back there. I can use all the help I can get! LOL.

Hey all you Hildebrands / Hildebrandts- did you know that Pope Gregory VII was born Hildebrand? I thought that was an interesting fact today when a German pope has been chosen. Also, the oldest existing piece of German literature is the Hildebrandslied (Song of Hildebrandt).I saw it in a museum in Kassel. Also, Hildebrandt and it's variations, is one of the oldest German surnames. Hildebrandt means "burning sword" (or something like that) and many medieval Hildebrandt's were knights. Tschuss! I have come to a stop with finding positive information on my gr.gr.Grandfather before he came from Germany to Minn. USA. I found ship records in 1870 but nothing on his parents. Ernst or Ernest Cohrs born 1821 and told that he had 2 brothers, Henry/Heinrich and August. The story goes that August died in Germany farming and that Henry remained in Germany, took part in the Danish-Prussian war 1864 and father of 6 children. Stories also told were that their father had 2 brothers, one which came to USA much earlier and eventually settled in California using the name Corse and the other whom we think was a doctor who moved to somewhere near the Russian border. All were supposed to have been born/lived in the village of Neudorf-Platendorf near the town of Gifhorn I think was in the province of Hannover.
Ernst/Ernest married twice, 1st wife Caroline Wolfers & 2nd was Fredricka Schultze. My line is from his 1st Caroline. I would be glad to talk to anyone that might have some leads that I could follow. Thanks for hosting this site.

The Kreiling name is also German, but probably not a part of your tree..

Wow, what a great site! I've combed the pages and took a look at the reunion pictures. Makes me hope I'm related somehow :-)
My Hildebrandt connection is a mystery my family has been trying to solve for years. We know this: His name was Gustav Hildebrandt. He was born in Germany sometime between 1870 and 1885 and served in S. Africa in the war at the turn of the 20th century. After returning to Germany, Gustav met a woman named Helene Sonnenberg (my great grandmother), who was the daughter of a friend he had met in the Army, Gustav Sonnenberg. They had an affair (heavens!) and she became pregnant. He literally deserted her at the alter and disappeared, only to return some short time after my grandmother Ida Sonnenberg was born and offer once again to marry Helene. Helene figured she had done this much by herself, heck she didn't need him any more, and told him to go packing. He packed himself right back off to South Africa again (sometime after 1907) and presumably, that's where he stayed.
So, here I am, with a great grandfather I know nothing about except for some small details, and I'm dying to know more!!!!
Thanks for creating such a great website. I'll be back!

Great Site!~
Hello from Northern Ontario!
Although I do not see any connection, the fact the spelling is the same means there is a very good chance that we (Hildebrandt's, with a DT), are related somewhere down the line!
My Dad, Neidhart Hildebrandt, (born in Charlottenburg) came from Germany to Ontario Canada,(in 1952), and my Mother from Springer (near Hannover), Germany, her maiden name being Reiter.
The earliest written record of our Hildebrandt family is traced to a Johann Michael Hillebrandt, born 1742 in Neustadt Germany. The next generation after Johann has their name spelled Hildebrandt> Hillebrandt's Son: Karl Michael Martin Hildebrandt, born in 1789 in Leobschlutz Gr. Other related sernames of importance are Roth, Von Tilly, Schwantzer, Vinzenz, Ulricht. Some common re-occurring first names are Karl, Johann, Michael, and Martin. We have books written by my Great Grandfather Michael Martin Hildebrandt publishing his letters to his son (my Grandfather), Frank Michel Hildebrandt. My great grandfather was a foriegn correspondant in Japan in the late 1800's.
It is very fascinating stuff to look at some of the other hildebrandt's history in the new world. I grew up in Toronto, Ontario (1960's and 70's)our family was the only Hildebrandts listed in the phone book. Now there at least thirty! Only several of these are direct relations to my Dad's family. There are Hildebrandts throughout Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, not to mention all the United States. If you have any of the same connections please don't hesitate to e-mail us!

My grandfather was Arthur Hildebrandt, he was born in Chicago Sept. 11, 1888, and died in 1975. Unfortunately, I never asked him about his family, and don't know who his parents were. But I did know one of his brothers, Walter (called Wally by some and my mom called him "uncle Dan" for some unknown reason). He lived in Wisconsin, and his first wife was my Godmother. He was known as a good "honky tonk" piano player, who didn't know how to read music, but could play very good by ear. ...so could my mom. He had a resort of sorts in Wisconsin.
My granddad married Minnie Ness, in Chicago sometime around 1910. Minnie was the last of 13 children and the only one born in the US to Pauline Ness and her husband (who I don't have a record of). The 1900 Census showed her to be a widow that immigrated from Germany in 1888. Unfortunately the 1890 Census was destroyed and it may have held the key to my family search.
