Name: Jim Cooke <jecooke88@hotmail.com> Date: 2003-09-13 Name Of Family Head and Wife: Abraham Cook(e) Sr & Martha Clayton, and Family Came To Hanover County, Virginia From: Old Rappahannock Co, VA Moved From Hanover County, Virginia To: remained, Hanover Comments:
The couple was in Old Rappahannock County, now Richmond County, in the 1680's. By 1690's they were in St. Peter's Parsh, New Kent. Hannah & Mathew, children of Abraham, were baptized there in the 1690's. Abraham patented 3 tracts, totaling 904 acres, from 1718 to 1722, on the North Anna. This land was apparently in NW Hanover, near Louisa.
Abe & Martha had a number of children; most migrated elsewhere, to wit: Abraham Jr patented land in Hanover(now Louisa), but migrated to Mecklenburg Co., VA-died 1748; Benjamin patented land in Louisa in 1725. He died in Hanover in 1759[his known issue, Ben & William, moved to Georgia and Surry, NC, respectively]; John moved to Cumberland Co, VA-died 1775; William patented land in Goochland(now Cumberland) in 1740, but sold it-died in Hanover circa 1750; Frances married Edmund Butler and moved to Bad Luck Creek, present-day Cumberland County, VA; Hannah & Mathew-unknown.
Abraham Cooke Sr probably died in Hanover in the 1720's.
Name: Jim Cooke <jecooke88@hotmail.com> Date: 2003-09-13 Name Of Family Head and Wife: John Cooke and Mary Came To Hanover County, Virginia From: Hanover County, VA Moved From Hanover County, Virginia To: Cumberland County, VA Comments:
John Cooke, born about 1700, died in Cumberland county, VA in 1775. He was survived by his wife, Mary, and issue: John jr;Stephen;James;Sarah;Elizabeth;Mary;Anne;Frances;Agnes;Agatha. John was probably a son of Abraham Cooke & Martha Clayton, a couple that moved from Old Rappahannock Co, VA (now Richmond Co) to New Kent(now Hanover),where they resided. They apparently never moved again, Abraham dying about 1720.
John was in Hanover in 1736 when he, and a brother William, were listed in the Account records of Thomas Patridge, a store owner near Hanover Courthouse. [William, who had a son listed among those records named "Clayton", patented land in Goochland, but sold it in 1744. He was listed on that deed as "of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover". William died in Hanover about 1750].
John, who also patented land in Goochland, moved there by 1747. The land fell within the bounds of Cumberland County, VA, on Green Creek.

Abraham was the son of Abraham Cook(e) Sr & Martha Clayton. That couple moved from Old Rappahannock Co, VA(now Richmond County) to New Kent (now Hanover). Abraham Jr, & his siblings, were likely born in New Kent. He purchased land in Brunswick County in 1739. That land presumably fell within the bounds of Lunenburg County. He was listed as a founder of that county. He also purchased land on Butcher's Creek in what is now known as Mecklenburg County, VA. He died in there in 1748, survived by wife Sarah and children Charles, Ben, James, Frances, & Barbara.

Name: Helen L Smith Hoke <shoke2253@aol.com> Date: 2003-07-09 Name Of Family Head and Wife: Gulielmus Smith and family Came To Hanover County, Virginia From: born abt 1735 Moved From Hanover County, Virginia To: between 1764-1766, to Granville Co, NC Comments:
GULIELMUS SMITH, son of possible Edmond Smith and Unknown wife, was born, I believe, in Hanover Co., VA abt 1735. His name, some say, is Latin and some say, French, but all agree it means WILLIAM. He doesn't have a middle name and some use WILLIAM, instead of Gulielmus. Even Gulielmus himself, used WILLIAM in signing some documents. But after his son, Wiley, was born, you find Gulielmus using GULIELMUS more and Wiley using WILLIAM. I believe he was from German descend, who came over from England in the late 1600s. This has not yet been proven. After studying the naming patterns of the colonist and the Germans, I believe that his father should be Edmond Smith or spelled Edmundus and possible Nancy, as his mother. There was a family out of Cradley, Hereford, England, that matches the naming patterns that Gulielmus Smith used with his children and has continued down through the family line.
Patrick Henry was born in Hanover Co., VA in 1736, as too was with Gulielmus Smith in 1735. Patrick began his law career with an impassioned plea against the King, known as the Parson's Cause case, at Hanover Courthouse. In this gourthouse are many documents with the signature of GULIELMUS SMITH or WILLIAM SMITH. Patrick Henry also worked at the Hanover Tavern, located across the street from the Courthouse. I'm sure through his travels, Gulielmus stopped in this same traven for a drink or a stayover, after finishing his business at the courthouse and before heading back home to the Beaver Dam area, north of Ashland. He may have known and eat with Patrick at the traven.
Being one of the burned counties of Virginia, not much has survived the Civil War in Hanover County, VA. I did find Gulielmus listed in the Virginia Tithables, from the burned Records Counties, compiled by Woodson and Woodson, page 98. There his name is spelled, Gulielmus Smith, from Hanover County, in year 1763, tithing for 162 acres.
I believe he moved soon after this to Granville Co., NC. He was there in 1766, when his son, Robert C. Smith, was born. If you read about the history of Hanover Co., VA, you will notice that there was troubles with the Indians in that area, and many from Hanover Co., VA went to Granville Co., NC. I believe there was a large migration at this time, going to Granville Co., NC. It has been said that when Gulielmus went to Granville County, that he sent many slaves ahead to prepare the house before he and his family arrived. If this is true, then one could only see him as a large slaveholder with a plantation in Hanover County.
His wife has never been named. She is not found on any documents in either county and not in his will, which may because she had all ready died before his Will was made in 1814. Since Gulielmus was a slaveowner and slaves were not permitted to marry, I believe the reason she is not named is she may have been Indian. I have always been told that we have Indian in us but so far have not found any. Believing that SMITH is German, then one would think we would be born with blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin, but we are not. This line of SMITH's all look the same with high cheek bones, dark olive complexion and dark hair, some with brown eyes and some with blue, but must with gray or green eyes.
