I am a grandson of W. L. Jackson and his wife, Anna Burkett Jackson. You have listed the grave of Laurence Jackson. He was born in November, 1911 although I do not have the specific day. Next on the list are the twin infants who were two girls and were also children of W.L. and Anna Jackson. Anna was born in Williams Ranch, the daughter of Joseph Burkett who was a blacksmith in Williams Ranch.

Comments:
I have done some research on the Williams Massacre at Sand Creek near the Thrifty Community in northwestern Brown County. W.L. Williams (b.1-27-1830 - d.8-2-1910) W.L. "Bill" Williams, son of John Williams, moved to San Creek in northwestern Brown County with his family about 1872. A band of kiowa Indian led by Big Foot attacjed the Williams home on April 24, 1873 and killed Bill Williams wife, Bethanie, and drug their infant daughter, Nancy Alice, through a fire and she later died on May 18. Big Foot and his band captured Williams 10 year old daughter and she was found hanging from a tree in Callahan County. During the attack on the William's hme, Bill and his teenage son were cutting wood about three miles north on Jim Ned Creek. Capt. William Jeff Maltby, Co. E of the Texas Ranger Frontier Battalion and nine rangers were summoned from Camp Colorado in Colemand County to track down the reneagde Indians. Jim Williams and his son joined Capt. Maltby and found Big Foot and hios band at a camp north of the present town of Ballinger Texas and destryed the entire band, including a squaw who was wearing Mrs. Williams apron. Capt. Maltby personally shot and killed the squaw. Jape, a Comanche headman who was with Big Foot and his band, gave a dying testament about their depredatons in central Texas. Capt. Maltby was chasing Big Foot for six months. It is likely that most of the Indian depredation in central Texas from 1870 until the Williams massacre was committed by Big Foot and his Kiowa warriors who were esacpees fromthe Kiowa-Comanche reservation at Fort Sill, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) .

My mother's great uncle, Samuel Columbus "Uncle Sam" Wyatt lived at Steepe's Creek near Borwnwood during this period. uncle Sam was the brand inspector for that area of Cnetral Texas. His brother, John Anderson Wyatt, was associated with the Trigger Mountain Mob of vigilantes who were named for their meeting place atop Trigger Mountain, a tree cover hill about three miles east of Williams Ranch Texas. uncle Sam borke John Anderson Wyatt out of the makeshift Brown County Jail which was a locked room in the Brown County clerk's office building. Henry Ford was the Brown County clerk during that period of time. Williams Ranch was in Brown County before 1887 when the county lines were redrawn by the State of Texas. The community of Williams Ranch soon was abandoned after the railroad by-passed the community in 1885 and the community of Mullin Texas was established which was named after the pioneer Ike Mullins family settled on Mullin Creek about 1858. Ike Mullin had family ties to my Coffee ancestors from Tennessee, Alabama and Virginia.

Bill Williams wife Bethanie (Roberts) was the sister of the founder of the Roberts (Baugh) Cemetery in Brown County. The Roberts Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Brown County. Some historians think that Mrs. Bethanie Williams and her daughter, Nancy A., were buried in unmarked graves in Mud Creek (Thrifty) Cemetery but thanks to the information found on this site, that information is incorrect.

Do you have a relative buried here? who ?: Cassie Ann Smith
Comments:
My great grandmother, Cassie Ann Sims (Fowler) Smith, married to Charles A. Smith Jan. 2, 1887. [I don't have her date of death handy, but she died before 1900.] She is supposed to be buried with an infant daughter. Apparently, the graves are unmarked, although I seem to remember seeing them years ago when I was a child, and I think there were stones enclosing the graves.

There may be other relatives. My grandfather, Edward Percival Smith (Percy) grew up at Williams Ranch, and later moved to Mullin.

Do you have a relative buried here? who ?: I'm not sure
Comments:
I am so curious about this family. My grandfather was John Washington Williams. He and his wife, Alice Marilda Bardin Williams, were married in Llano Co., Texas and raised their 12 children there. John's grandfather, Tommy Williams and his wife Rachel Taylor Williams moved from Jackson Co., Illinois, sometime between 1850 and 1860, with their family. I have often wondered if the reason Tommy moved his family to Texas was because if he was related to this Williams family. I hope to research this further. There are some similar names in both families, which makes me wonder if they are related somehow. I enjoyed the website so much.

I have visited William's Rance Cemetery and it is a very well kept place, someone does a nice job on it.
I would like to know where the town of WR was in relation to the Cemetery, anyone who knows please e-Mail me.

I have a couple copies of "no man's Land becomes a county" and would do look-ups as time permits. Would consider selling one copy.

Also have some U.S. Geological Survey maps from 1894 that show Williams Ranch at the time with 4 roads leading in and out of it. (unmarked) although one comes right SW from Mullin.

my compliments to whoever did all the research and set up this web-site (I can't find a name or eMail addy) It is a GREAT job. ThanX

I Understand there is a history of Williams Ranch floating around somewhere, mimiographed and only about 20 pages. Would LOVE to have a copy of that. Anyone?

I noted that the headstone for Jefferson Forsythe is listed as "W J Forsyth." It should be a rough stone reading "T J Forsythe 1804 1885." Is this correct?

Comments:
I'm seeking information about the Sparks family who may have lived in the Williams Ranch Community in the 1870s. It is quite possible that one of the family members, Richard G. Sparks, was originally buried in this cemetery in 1879. He is now buried in the Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood but he may have been moved to that location at a later date.

Very nice site. My great, great, great, grandfather was John Williams, the ranch founder. My grandmother, Gwendolyn Williams Herman, passed away in 2002 at the age of 90. She attended school in a one room school house located on the ranch. She lived her adult life in Brownwood, Texas. I recall visiting the cemetery in my early youth and listening to my grandmother tell stories of life on the ranch.

Have an interest in Williams Ranch, why it "died" who and why did they settle here. What caused the un-rest or mobs I hear about. Also interested in Brownwood. The Williams Ranch Road the comes from B'w'd and was once called the "wire road" Telegraph lines ran here from Austin to Ft Phantom-hill. Road was laid out by Rob't E Lee. was an important route from Austin to Ft Phantom and on to Ft. Concho at Saint Angelo (San Angelo)
Today I'm trying to find the exact location of W.W. Chandler's home the first location of Bwd and the Wm. Connell the second location and why Judge Greenleaf Fisk wanted it on the south-west side of the Bayou. (I'd also like to know why they called it a "Bayou" cause it's not!)

We just visited my great grandmother's grave at Williams Ramch Cemetery. I'm so pleased to see this website and thank Sharon Ivey and all who have made it possible. My great grandmother was the wife of James Pickney Lindsay and had several children at the time of her death. Her gravestone says LM Lindsay. We do not know why this family was in Texas and wonder if they were working on the Williams Ranch at that time. I would appreciate any information anyone would have about the Lindsay family and the Williams Ranch history.
