Comments:
My great uncle, John Wooliver, of Stroud, Oklahoma, was a member of the 45th Regiment Coastal Artillery Corps, AEF overseas...I have a copy of a letter he sent from France to his mother, and was hoping there was a regimental history written or a list of names of men who served with my great uncle.

Who or what are you researching William Newman of Human Statue of Liberty Fame
Comments:
The subject line leading to my previous question was misleading. What I would like to find is the date of death and place of burial of William Newman, who was the commandant at Fort Dodge for the famous photo of soldiers in the shape of the Statue of Liberty. By all accounts on the Internet, he was a totally professional officer and leader. Born in TN in 1866. Graduated from West Point in 1892. I find no middle name or initial, and no records of that he married and had children. Chaplain Evan A. Edwards gives a glowing account of him and a good photograph. Army Registry shows that after WWI, Newman's rank reverted to Lt. Col.

Who or what are you researching Officers of 24th Infantry Mexico 1916
Comments:
My grandfather John P. Edgerly (1888-1982) graduated from USNA in 1910, then took Army commission in 1911. Trained as pilot in 1913 in San Diego. Served in Pershing's Punitive Expedition to find Pancho Villa in 1916. I found two photos on Web of my grandfather with 20 other officers assigned to 24th Infantry in Mexico. Found bio info on all of the officers. One was William Newman of Camp Dodge "Statue of Liberty" photo fame. Newman had reputation as a good leader. 1892 grad of USMA. Born 1866 in TN. Retired as a Colonel. Looking for date of death.

Comments:
My Dad, Marshall Neil Wingard, served with the CAC until about 1920. His unit sailed into the port at La Harve, France, just as the war ended. He always spoke with with some annoyance of having never been allowed off the ship to explore the city. Instead the ship was just turned around and sent back to the States.

Who or what are you researching I wanted to know a bit about this military facility in comparison to Ft.Sill, OK
Comments:
I am a dependent wife of a retired Army 1stSG. I have a brother who also is a retired Army Sgt. who is presently hospitalized at Knoxville VA facility. I will be visiting him for a few days to see how he is progressing. I wanted to take advantage of the housing/lodging at Camp Dodge, and decided it would be interesting to know something about this military site. Amazingly, it was developed/established the same year of Oklahoma's centennial birthday, 1907-2007, which we celebrated in grand style.

How did you find this site The 18,000 men photo @ Camp Dodge
Who or what are you researching The photo
Comments:
Great work! I found several very interesting elements. I found your site as I was researching the 18,000 man Statue of Liberty photo. There are some who were in the photo who contend there was an over exaggeration to creat more interest and sesationalize the photo. Their contention is there were more like 1,800 in the photo. Having made as best a count as possible I tend to agree. Perhaps you could make your own count and answere the doubt. I also know that many from that generation were great story tellers and loved to add color and interest to their stories that got better with age and as they passed along. I can't help but wonder if your grandfather was in a set up photo like the Liberty one. Again, great work and I will pass the site to some who will enjoy it. Pleas add a "Old stories, tales, passed on" section, if possible, and allow others to add their stories. Andy

I have a large (3 foot wide) photo of Battery C 60th CAC taken on 11 Feb 1919 at Fort Washington MD, there are 197 men in the photo, I can make out 3 officers (appear to be LTs)and the remaining 194 men appear to be enlisted (pvts and corpls). Looking for any information on the roster for Batter C. The history states that 60th CAC returned to states from France on 4 Feb 1919 and was demobilized on 24 Feb 1919 at Fort Washington, this photo was taken on their arrival at Fort Washington, just before they were demobilized.

My father use to tell me stories told by his father of the Great Train Round-up of young men, who were quickly trained and sent to Europe to fight WW I. My Grandfather was one of those men, who survived the war, but later died from gas poisoning many years after coming home. Sort of like Agent Orange for Viet-Nam Vets. You did a great job on your site and I commend you. It would be great to have the names of all the soldiers, who went thru there at that time and the names of those, who died in the Great War. I saw something like that at the Titanic Exhibit in Vancouver, BC and it really made an impression on me.

I ‘googled’ Camp Dodge and William Newman (listed at bottom of this fascinating photo as commander), held that position for two weeks only, 13 August through 30 August 1918, so this picture had to be taken during that time.

I'm an American History major and grew up in Ames, 30 miles north of Des Moines, so I have a passing knowledge of Camp Dodge.

Remarkable.

We have been researching my husband's grandfathers uniform jackets and trying to find what unit it represented. It looks brand new - it's Navy blue with red sargent stripes - today we found the red triangle under the stripes in a gold circle means observer and the long rectange underneath means first class. The collar has U.S. pins and also crossed guns(?. There's a pin on the collar that says 151st. There's a slash on the cuff and a stripe above that. Today I ALSO found a "shoe box" with his papers. He was in the Coastal Artillery Corps, at Fort Andrews, Fort Banks, mentioned. So, I believe he stayed in Boston Harbor as an Observer in artillery. Do you have any other info on the 151? Thank you for your website - I've had a hard time finding much info on the CAC. - Linda Harris

I have tonight send you what I know about this soldier, except I forgot to say his tombstone gives birth and death date as: May 2, 1892 - January 6, 1950

Inscribed on Headstone: Tex Wagoner 53 Ammo TN CAC". Another record cites: TX Waggoner - 53 - Ammo TN*ARB/144th Infantry."

Someone told me that ARB probably stood for Armored Rifle Battalion, but I don't know what the TN stands for...possibly Texas National? or TN for Tennessee, but states weren't abbreviated like that back then?

Thanks for anything anyone can tell me.

Who or what are you researching Harry L. Mitchell
Comments:
A copy of the discharge paper says that Harry L. Mitchell was mustered out from this outfit at Camp Grant, IL on Feb 22, 1919 but it is always told that Harry served as a motorcycle curior during WWI. Someone in our family obtained his information before the fire in St. Louis as they say his records are distroyed now and could not respond to my recent request. His wartime itinery includes Brest, Toul, Jaillion, St Jacques, Varennes, Chatel Chehery, St. Miheal, Meuse Argonne,Sivrey, and others returning aboard the transport R.M.S. Cedric Jan. 19, 1919. He was a Sgt. at the time of his discharge. I would like to see his name on any roster and would like to know more about the outfits in which he served. Sincere thanks.

I am a military analysist at Ft. Leavenworth. I retired from active duty army in 1996. I was at Ft Riley quite a bit and at Camp Funston, never realizing what had been located there. I was researching the great influenza epidemics for briefings on Avian Influenza and found all the information about the Spanish Influenza starting there and I have been adding information about National Army and National Guard Training sites. As AGR we would overnight at Camp Dodge on our way to training sites in Minnesota. So I was also intrested in that way. You have the makings of an outstanding site. Keep up the goog work.

I truly enjoyed pouring through your website. The details about my Grandfather's service in WW1 are scrace, as he never talked about it with his children. The few facts I have are from bits of conversations with my father (my grandfather died in 1975, I was 2. So far what I have is that he served in the Coast Artilliery, that before they shipped they were quarantined for a chickenpox (or something like it) outbreak, that it took 12 horses to maneuver the guns, and he was part of the Battle of Argonne. Your website has spurred my curiosity on, and i applaud the time and dedication you have spent pulling this together. Thank You!

It's nice to find a web-site with information about WWI CAC. My father was with the 56th Coast Artillery, Battery D. and I am interested in finding out as much information as I can.
When I was a child he related some stories of the war but was generally reluctant to talk in detail about his experiences. What I know of his personal experiences are sketchy and few. He was a machine-gunner with the Battery.
I often thought that I would someday find a picture of the unit with him in it. It would be nice!
If anyone has any detail information - or photos - that would add to the general printed information, I would appreciate your notifying me.

The site is great.

Thanks.

Who or what are you researching Rudolph Otto Matthes of above named c
Comments:
My father, PFC Rudolph Otto Matthes dob 26 Aug. 1898, enlisted at Bellingham WA April 10,1917. From Camp Lewis or Ft. Casey he went to 7 co WA CAC Butte Mont for guard duty. According to what his "buddy" told the VA when Matthes returned to Ft. Casey he was in poor health. Then, they were both transferred to D Co, 63d rty CAC and in June left by train for NY, then shipped, destination France on July 14, 1919 While at a camp at Courtine France, Matthes got seriously ill again. They returnrd to New York port Feb.26 1919. Discharged 21 Mar 1919 at Camp Lewis. I have VA medical records 5 inches high as Matthes was awarded VA compensation for tuberculosis. Died of the disease 1 Sep. 1937. Friend (now deceased) George Hunby a WWI (not in Matthes's unit) and WWII vet. and journalist/historian, claims officer Bellingham Amer. Legion, l told me D CO 63d CAC did not experience combat, although an advance party did. The unit consisted of huge guns which were placed on flat cars on French RR tracks. The soldoers' duties were mostly guarding and maintaining these guns.
The narration of "The Diary of a Buck" meant a lot to me. I was ten when father died and was always curious about his war service and only had hear say reports. My mother had romantisized his service telling me that because my dad was a good artist, he was sent forward to sketch the terrain for any signs of enemy activity. I never fully believed this, as she always embellish to make things more interesting than they really were. I loved her for it. It put real color in our lives, although I learned to double check her "facts." I wanted to share this on the rootsweb.com/form 1.html but I couldn't find how to do it. Also I'm confused about Ft. Casey. Was it near Camp Lewis in Wash? Any commets or questions are welcome. Jo Ann Lysak.

Who or what are you researching I am looking for you to correct your error
Comments:
Dear Joe,
If you are responsible for the page on Ralph S. Kimball, you've got your facts wrong. Ralph S. Kimball was my stepgrandfather. He married my paternal grandmother, Freda Elliott (nee Cook) after she was divorced from my natural grandfather, Col. Milton A. Elliott Jr. They had three children, my father Milton III, his brother William, and his sister Freda. His sister Freda Elliott (my aunt) married Douglas McNair and became his widow. She never remarried. She was certainly never married to her stepfather, Ralph S. Kimball.

You're getting your facts from Ralph Kimball's nephew, who never knew him. Ralph had a grudge against Tom Kimball's father for attending college and letting Ralph go to work to support their widowed mother. He had nothing to do with his brother for the rest of his long life.

I lived with my stepgrandfather Ralph Kimball on a number of occasions while going to college from 1965 to 1970. I know whereof I speak. Please correct these errors on his webpage. They do no honor to his real wife and ignore my family completely!

Sincerely,
Milton A. Elliott IV

My dad was in WW1, he was shell shocked and gased. While in training in Oklahoma he became ill with spinal menigitis, he was not expected to live, so they called his parents from Kansas. They went to see him, and could only see him through the window. It was a miracle that he was healed. He didn't have to go to France, but he wanted too.
I am really proud of my dad. He passed away in 1967.

Who or what are you researching my father's WW1 service
Comments:
My father was Cpl. Henry J. Podesta and he was in the 58th
Field Artillery C.A.C. in WW1. I was browsing the site and I
saw his unit patch (Cross of Lorraine in a blue circle). I believe two of his brothers were in that unit also. I know that he was gassed in France, and also that he was one of the charter members of the American Legion. He had a book which was a unit history of the 58th which had everyone's name and s/n in it by company. Unfortunately I no longer have it. The hardcover was blue with the above unit patch on it. I was trying to find out if he qualified for a Purple Heart award, but I have no info and the Army's records were destroyed in a fire in 1970. He was from NYC and was at Ft. Totten. Is there somewhere else to look?
Thank you for any assistance.

Who or what are you researching Arthur H. Whitney of C. A. C.
Comments:
Dear Mr. Hartwell or others who see this,
Recently I visited your website, looking for something
that might help me figure out a mystery. My father's
cousin, Arthur H. Whitney, who was raised in his
household like a brother, did not contact the family
or his sister's family after he returned from WWI.
Both families tried unsuccessfully to locate him. All
those people are dead now, but I recently found out
that Arthur did return, was mustered out in Russell
WY, 3/28/19. He too is dead, dying in the Denver VA
Hospital 6/27/66, so the secret of why he never
contacted family again died with him. On his
admission to the VA Hospital, he certified that he had
no living relatives, but he listed a friend, Dr. E. S.
Woznik, of Pueblo, CO, who was a dentist, also dead
now.

Arthur's last letter, that we know of, was dated
11/2/18 from France, and under his signature he wrote:

Bat C 1st A. A. B.
C. A. C.

I have assumed that "C. A. C." was for Coast Artillary
Corps, but I don't know what the "Bat C 1st A. A. B."
means. I would like to figure out what Arthur's
service consisted of, and if there was some reason he
might have had "shell-shock" or amnesia. I tried to
get his service record, but was told those documents
burned. I do know, from his VA admission application,
that he was hospitalized in the Long Beach VAH in
1956, and in LA for "Dom Care 1956-1962". I don't
know what that means either.

Can you help me understand any of this? Can you
direct me to further help? Any help you can give, is
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mary E. Kramer

Researching/looking for the Troop Ship that my father, Clifton R. Fields, sailed from ? to France (?) on August 6, 1918 with the 32nd Inf Div, 128th Inf Regt. He was drafted Sep 18, 1917, Dover, Pope County, Arkansas. Assigned to 345h Inf Regt, 87th Inf Div, AR N.G., Camp Pike, No. Little Rock, Arkansas. Went by train to Camp Beauregard, Alexandria, LA, reorganized to the 39th Inf Div (training/replacement division), Nov 10, 1917 - Sep 13, 1918. He was seriously wounded while rushing a machine gun on October 15, 1918, Montfaucon > Meuse Argonne, eventually losing his right leg. Also trying to determine by what means did he return (March 3, 1919). Will spend more time at you site going from one to the other ships. Thank you for bringing this site online and maintaining it. Who or what are you researching grandfather's service in Coast Artillery
Comments:
I'm wondering if you could help me understand what is written on my Grandpa's discharge papers, as it relates to the information on your website. Not being especially versed in how the different battalions, corps, etc., relate to each other, I can't make complete sense of it. This is what it says on his papers:

"... Left U.S. May 28, 1918. Arrived overseas June 12, 1918. Left overseas Feb. 12, 1919. Arrived U.S. Feb. 28, 1919. Served with Battery D. 2nd Trench Mortar Bn and Battery D. 1BN Trench Artillery."

Under Battles, engagements, skirmishes, expeditions: "Argonne forest Sept 26 - 30, 1918. Battle of Meuse, Oct 31 - Nov 7, 1918."

On the other side, it certifies that my grandfather was a "Private Dem Co. 160 D Brig. (Battery D. 1Bn. Trench Artillery)"

Because the above-cited "batteries" and "Trench Artillery" don't exactly correspond with items on your page, I don't know if certain designations are interchangeable. I'd like to know more of his service history. When my grandfather was alive, all I ever got in answer to "what did you do in the War, Grandpa?" was "I was in France." and "I drove a motorcycle with a sidecar."
I know I'm extremely lucky to have his discharge papers, as 75% or so of the records at the Archives were destroyed in the fire. I also have his Victory medal, and his uniform hat, which I treasure, along with several French postcards of "Huns" [my Grandpa's note on the back side].

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Who or what are you researching USS Frederick ACR-8
Comments:
Dec 2nd 2003:

Hi everybody,

My family inherited a "picture postcard" type scrap book from my grandfather's estate in 1984.
His name was Oval Hannah, a carpenter from Madera, California and not a veteran himself.
(I'll have to e-mail my dad about other relatives who might have served..)

The scrap book details the Fredrick's 18 month war patrol in the mid-south Atlantic.
I have not perused the book for over a year but some memorable photos include:
The panama canal,
refueling with coal
boxing smoker
shipboard life
engaging some German subs (pictures of depth charges going off)
New York Harbor
USS Constitution circa 1818. (a side sight at the time)

I thought about building a web page and scanning the photos for WW1 buffs to enjoy.

If interested I will be happy to burn CD's with documentation and send them to all interested parties.
Thanks for the interesting site, I never new that anyone else had stuff on the USS Frederick . Very cool.
Feel free to pass on to anyone who might have connections to the USS Frederick. This type of history is rare but rich.

My uncle served in the 32nd, 120th machine gun battalion. I found his group on this site. I have a letter which he wrote from Camp Merritt in February,1918. He was waiting to be shipped out but two soldiers in his group got the measles! I think this held him up a few days. Do you know the names of the ship that the 120th sailed on?

While reading John Eisenhower's 'Yanks' I decided to poke around on the web for some more background material. My father, Francis J. McAvoy served as a cook in Battery D of the 55th. I have a copy of the regimental diary as written by its chaplain, Frederick Morse Cutler. As my dad died in 1954 when I was barely 3-1/2 yrs. old, I've always been interested in the young man in the Doughboy uniform who looks so much like I did in my Marine dress blues.

Who or what are you researching Joseph Bernard Freedman
Comments:
You have compiled a tremendous amount of information that has been organized and presented in a very intersting format. I stand amazed!!

As a child I was very close to my mother's parents. My maternal grandfather was a WW1 veteran. He spoke little of his time in Mexico and later in France during the war. (I now wish I had had enough of an interest back then to ask questions). But he did posses a number of pictures from his time in the military. Fortunetly, as an 11 or 12 year old I did have enough sense to inquire about the pictures. After a moment of silence accompanied by a far off look in his eyes, he began to explain to me about these photographs. I just kept staring at the pictures as if mystified by the concept that "Grandpa Joe" could ever have been young. After reliving the pictures for a few moments he got up and took a small blue box out of a drawer. He opened it and showed me a strange looking object inside. I sat speechless sensing sort of what this object was but not being really sure. I said, "What is that Grandpa?" He said, "This is the Purple Heart Medal given to me because of the wounds I received while in France during the war." At that moment in my young mind I started to get some idea as to why Grandpa always had cotton in his ear and why his leg was so misshapen and why he walked with such a dramatic limp. It wasn't until many years later, as he lay dying when I was in my early 20s that Grandpa ever told me what happened on the battle field in France that day. He also told me of the trauma and hurt he went through as a young man at the tragic premature death of his own father. Since Grandpa Joe's death in 1977 other elderly relatives came forth and gave the sketchy information they could recall of Grandpa's war experience. It was consistant with what Grandpa had told me.

It is my grandfather WW1 Veteran Joseph Bernard Freedman that I would like to eventually dedicate a web site to. Thanks for the encouragement Joe. Sincerely, Steve Diamond

I am writing the saga of a New England family and the events span from the early 1900's to the 1970's. I recently acquired a watch (from a company in Brighton, Michigan) that has those words on the dial as well a "USA" and the american eagle.

I really hope you will be able to contact the fellow who gave you a photo of the USS Radnor (found in the trash). I am truly curious about the connection the deceased mother had to that ship. Perhaps her husband/brother/father served with your Grandfather or maybe he was in the Navy was a part of the Radnor's crew. If you follow the lead and find out more info, please let me know. It was taken by Mole & Thomas out of Chicago. I was trying to find out why it was taken and where is the original hanging. I was also trying to find out if there was any list of where each man was positioned. Since it is such a large picture I wanted to know what did they us to take the photo from since helicopter etc. were not in use yet. My father was Joseph Safko Bug. 3371624. I have in my possession a picture of Battery "G" with all their names, and many of their nicknames (many of which are not politically correct today). I'd be willing to scan a copy of the picture to you if you think it would fit with the information on your site.

I just aquired a photo of Camp Dodge in 1917 and thought i'ld try and get a little history on what i got. It seems that I have lots of reading to do. The photo is predominately the railroad yard with the barracks in the background. There are soldiers here and there but doesnt seem to be the focus of the photo. Photo is about 4 1/2 feet by 8 inches. If i can help with any info that may be in the photo i sure will.
On another WWI interest, I also have a photo of the 3rd delegation to the National Disabled Veteran taken in Minneapolis in 1921. Thanks for the info, Brian

My father, who was born May 22, 1898, fought at the Battle of Marne, and his medals were for Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne. His war diary talks of Chateau Thierry, and of an aquaduct, where he was, and various aspects of the fighting there. When he was wounded he lay all night on a supply wagon for them to take him out. He also wrote of the Christ of the Battlefield, seen by many dying soldiers. Dad is buried in the Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Served: in France in Headquarters Company 63rd Artillery CAC. (this info from distant cousin as I am still waiting on papers from military)
Stories I have:
1. As he was 'from Iowa', was set to work on tractors and with livestock working with artillery(? - that was from his wife)
2. He was 'mustard gassed' while in France and had severe lung trouble the rest of his life.

Who or what are you researching Coastal Defense items
Comments:
I am a volunteer at the US National Park at the Presidio of San Francisco and am volunteering at Battery Chamberlin on Baker Beach. The battery was constructed 1902-1904 and armed with 4 six-inch rifled guns on disappearing gun carriages. In 1917 the four guns were dismounted and shipped to Fort Monroe, VA for shipment to France. We have no record of whether or not the guns got to France or if they were ever used there in training or combat.

I would appreciate any information on which guns (model and serial number)arrived in France should you have stumbled upon this information in your research. If you have a source to point me towards that would be great. We believe that the Battery Chamberlin guns were all Model 1903 and serial numbers 27, 28,29, and 30. We are currently working on a brochure for the battery and on a website for the Harbor Defenses of San Francisco (an endless task!) and would like to include this info in the various items.

Your wesite is great and I really like your "story". The basic information may well be incorporated in my spiel for our visitors. Thanks for doing a super job. We're open on the first weekend of each month from 1100-1500 hours - we demonstrate a real six-inch rifled gun on a disappearing carriage and have a small pictorial museum on the magazine.

I belong to the Coast Defense Study Group and they have a website and crank out a booket (articles and pixs) and newsletter four times a year. Cost is $31 per year (?). Contact is Eliott @ http://www.cdsg.org/ The CDSG sponsors vists to various sites - this Fall they are working on the Vladivostok Fortres in Sibera and the 2003 Conference is to Long Island.

Comments:
One site with so much good stuff on it! I had already signed the guestbook when I ran across information about another ship that I am researching. The USS Charleston was the first breakwater ship to be used at Powell River. Like the South Dakota/Huron, she was stripped to her waterline and stood guard over the log pond at the Powell River pulp and paper mill for many years. After the Huron sank in 1961, Charleston was towed to Kelsey Bay, BC, where she was sunk as part of a breakwater there. Her remains can still be seen there. I would also like to ask if I might have permission to use some of the images of this ship in my book.
Thanks,

Enjoyed looking around your site, especially the photos of the South Dakota. After she was decommissioned, she was stripped to the waterline and her lower hull became part of a floating breakwater at Powell River, BC Canada. She was there from 1931 until she sank in a storm in 1961. Her hulk lies on the bottom here in about 80 feet of water. I was wondering if I might have permission to use some of the images of her for use in a book that I am writing about the breakwater ships.

My grandfather was Private Frederick Lake Clark, from Coudersport, PA (1895-1958). He was a member of 305th Engineer Regiment in World War 1. He was wounded and disabled for life, on November 1 or 2, 1918 in the Argonne Forrest in France. He sailed to France May 25-June 8 on the USS Huron, in Brest june 8 to jun 17, Hallighen 6-17 to 7-5,
Beauval 7/5 to 8/5, Chateau de la Haie 8/5 to 8/25, and I could go on and on, but on 11/2/18 he had a bomb explode near him, for the next two years he was in Army hospitals, mostly in New York and New Jersay, I would love to learn more about those days and the incident that injured him and the USS Huron (1913-1918). He died in South Texas in 1958, I don't remember him very well and want to understand "why" he was as he was. He was only 23 when he was injured. His wife died in 1929. He raised three small children alone. I loved your sight and thank you for some information and some leads.

My wife's grandfather Francis Leo Kiernan was in Battery F, 57th C.A.C. He had been in the N.Y. Militia until April 1917 and then joined U.S. Army in New York. He was assigned to the Battery and shipped overseas in time to join it apparently just before the spring offensive. We have his discharge papers with the dates of leaving the US and returning and major engagements. He is shown as a clerk.

We know very little about the man, but we have a photo in uniform and and intersting anectdote..
When my wife's father died three years ago, we found in his library a first edition of Pershing's Memoirs of WWI. While reading this, a clipping from the New York Times fell out of a section where Pershing was accompanying Poincarre, President of France on a tour of his ruined chateau which had just been recaptured. As they walked the gorunds, they encountered two doughboys who, instead of taking off, stuck out their hands and said hello. Pershing comments on this open, equalitarian nature of the troops in his book.

The clipping from the Times, where the book had been serialized, was a letter from an ex-soldier who was one of the two doughboys and he identified the other as Frank Kiernan, whom he believed to be living in Far Rockaway N.Y. after the war. He said that he had wanted to skeddadle, but the affable Irish-american Kiernan insisted on being friendly.

My wife is searching for any information about her grandfather.

Comments:
My father gave me a picture taken at Camp Dodge of the Human Statue of Liberty made up of 18,000 officers and men. Col. Wm Newman, Commander, Col Rush S. Wells, Directing. 3371624. I was thrilled to see the web page of the Camp have been trying to find out more about his stent in the service. He passed away in 1980 at the age of 82. Thank you for being there.

My grandfather was in the Coastal Artillery. He was also stationed at Camp Dodge. He was a recruiter at the beginning of WWI. At the time of his death he was Tech Sgt - Bat G, 13 Coastal Artillery stationed at Fort Crockett in Galveston, Texas. Unfortunately, I got interested to late to obtain his full military records due to the fire in St. Louis and all I have is my Grandmother's pension file so I do not know for sure what group he was with at the end of the war -- only stories about mounting a gun on a railroad car. Thanks so much for providing some insight into what he may have experienced in his army career.

Comments:
We were just viewing some of my grandfather's (Paul Drew Norris) pictures of when he was stationed in France during WWI.

He was in a balloon company (I don't remember the name of it). The pictures showed dirigibles (air ships) on the ground being worked on and being readied for flight.

Grandpa managed to keep a letter that he found in a German trench. We had it translated it - seems the soldier wrote it in an old German dialect, lamenting about the war.

I have most of my Grandfather's letters to my Grandmother, Florence Russell Norris. She passed away last August at the young age of 101. (Grandpa lived his remaining years at the Mountain Home in Tennessee and died in 1965.) They were both strong and wonderful people.

I enjoyed your site and will visit it again. It is great work!

Comments:
I am struck by the parellels between your grandfather and my grandfather, Earle C. Potter. He was 3 days younger than your grandfather, born 14 Jul 1895 in South Kingstown, RI and like your grandfather, he died in 1981. Like you I knew little about his military service when he was alive, although I did know that he had been at Argonne.
The part about the Larkin Soap blew me away - my great grandmother, Earle's mother, was born Edith Eudora Larkin! I wonder if that company had any ties to the colonial Larkin family of RI?
I want to thank you for posting your research. I enjoyed seeing the pictures and wondering if maybe one of the men may have known my grandfather, or perhaps if one of them might even be my grandfather. I also enjoyed hearing the story of the 55th CAC. I have spent countless hours researching the Civil War, in which I can find no ancestor who served. I've also read extensivley about the Revolution, but have countless ancestors who served, including some who lost their lives as a result. I've spent little time on WWI and feel I learned a lot today about what it must have been like for my grandfather Potter.
Thanks so much, Donna Potter in Rhode Island

I've been researching my Grandfather's unit, the 71st Company, Coast Artillery Corps, during the Philippines-American War (1899-1902). So far I have not found any information regarding this Company except that they were involved in the Malabon, PI campaign. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Ray

I have my grandfathers diary of his service in france in ww1. i have retyped it from diary ,and i want to get maps to verify village and town names , also to trace his movements to match the diary. also lists of fellow servicemen he has named in it. also the disposition of the ships that he sailed on.
for the best part most of each month of movements and activities. he even has the snowball war his unit had while waiting to come home, and how they were kept an additional 30 days if they stated that the rations didn't taste good. My Grandfather was Joseph Patric Mc Donough
