A wonderful site, a lot of information. The only fact known about my relatives was a story about a young man who left his hometown Regenwalde in Pommerania and went to Amerika.He should lives in Kansas...
Now I knew a lot about Reinhard Zillmann! He was a uncle of my father Günter Otto Reinhard Zillmann and left his home before my father was born. The family left Regenwalde in 1945 when the war was ending.

Our little town is in central Illinois and is named OnaRga -- very close to the name of your town. Tradition is that our town was named after Princess Onarga. I believe I am a relative of William "Bill" Ray, listed as the only "colored" citizen in Onaga at his death in 1949, according to the obituary on your site. I would love to find out if I have relatives in the area. It looks like William Ray possibly had a niece when he died. Census records indicate several Ray's from Kentucky in Kansas.

looking for relatives of Ruth Knipp Williams, wife of Louie Williams. She passed in 1958 or thereabouts. Bob Kennedy, a parishioner of mine, was born in Half Mound and grew up in Oketo and Junction City. Bob's dad had worked for the LK&W and Bob's brother, Glenn, told us about the website.

I am searching for information on the family of Anna Laura Sheets (sometimes shown as Anna, other times as Laura), who was born in Kansas, but was living in Colorado by the 1880 census. Parents were M.R. Sheets and Stella Sheets, both born in Virginia, according to 1880 census records. Anna Laura was born c. 1877. In 1880, her parents give their ages as 34 (for M.R. Sheets) and 22 (for Stella). They had 2 other children, a girl shown only as "E.L.", born c. 1875, and a boy named William A., born c. 1979. I am having a difficult time going any further, especially not knowing what M.R. stands for. Might they be related to your Sheets family members?

I was attempting to explain to my 8 year old son (John-Thomas Fields) where he comes from and a little about our heritage. Not knowing much myself, I decided to start following my ancestral line. No family tree exists in my immediate family, so, using my highly honed police investigative skills (ha ha) I was able to track this much in the last 24 hours. I'm the son of Thomas R. Fields & grandson of Earl G. and Julia (Knoll) Fields from Onega. Earl is the son of Charles E. and Clara E. (Dumpprope) Fields, Charles is the son of Louis and Martha (Miller) Fields. Louis is the son of Ellerson and Mary Ann (Diehl) Fields. Ellerson is the son of Judia Fields but I don't know who is father was. I'd like to keep going and find out where they all originated from. I'm guessing based on what I've read there is a strong Irish background. There have been so many rumors passed down, some too taboo to talk about I was told. It would be nice to really know. Any leads in the right direction or just information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

She left Onaga after their house burned down in the mid-50's and moved to Topeka. Today we live in Arkansas. Thanks for the great site! It's wonderful to see all the information about this town I spent summers in as a child. I would visit my grandparents (Murray and Bertha Barbour) and uncle (Raymond Hetzler) in the 1960's. They lived on the south side of the train tracks on the road out of town in one of those houses on the right with the long driveways up to them; the 2-story with the porch across the front. My sister and I would walk to the little ice cream joint for cones. She worked 17 years at the sewing factory in Onaga until it closed and still lives in Centralia. I'm in the Wichita Kansas area now.

Peter Paul Grim, son of Nikolis Grim and Margaritta Chartner Grim, was born July
14, 1831, at Saarburg, Prussia. His youth was spent in the Saarburg and Tholey areas
of what is now West Germany. ;He came to America about 1850. He worked as a baker in
New York City for a time and later enlisted in the United States Army. After this he
came to Kansas and began farming near Onaga.
In 1862 he enlisted as a First Sergeant in the 11th Kansas Volunteers, along
with many others from Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee counties. They trained at Ft.
Leavenworth and in a few months moved into Arkansas, occupying Fort Smith. He later
saw action at Prairie Grove and Pea Ridge, Arkansas, moving back to Fort Riley, KS,
then to Wyoming. He spent the rest of the Civil War on the Frontier.
After the war, he returned to Onaga. On October 4, 1865, he married Sarah
Frances Gibson, whose family came to Onaga from Ohio. She was the first school
teacher in Onaga.
To this marriage were born four children: Josephine, who taught school for many
years, married James Frost and lived in California, where she died. George Eugene
Grim farmed in the Onaga area for a number of years. He was manager of the Wheaton
Lumber and Grain Company and later worked at Topeka for the Kansas State Teacher's
Association. He died in 1952. Paul Nickolas Grim farmed and had a dairy near Onaga
for many years. Margaret Grim married, but died at an early age. Peter Paul Grim
farmed near Onaga for many years, raising his family there. He was a one time
commander of the local veterans' organization, the G.A.R., and was active in civic
affairs. About 1900, he retired and moved his home into Onaga. This is the house
just west of the American Legion building. He died there in 1912. His widow lived
there until her death, April 21, 1923.

I was in Onaga last summer . Unfortunately any place I could research in was close . It was THURSDAY :-) The Library was closed ,as was the funeral home . The wonderful newspaperman helped me find the regar cemetery.
I believe he was running for a office at that time .I found the cemetery & My G-Great Grandfathers headstone .Ransome Wicks died in Onaga 28 March 1880,leaving a wife (Laura)&

I was in Onaga last summer . Unfortunately any place I could research in was close . It was THURSDAY :-) The Library was closed ,as was the funeral home . The wonderful newspaperman helped me find the regar cemetery.
I believe he was running for a office at that time .I found the cemetery & My G-Great Grandfathers headstone .Ransome Wicks died in Onaga 28 March 1880,leaving a wife (Laura)&
2 sons(Wm. & Byron) Needless to say I want to know more about this man. He is my dead end ! I know his son was born in NY. I was hoping to find a Gen. Society at this site ,but not.

I was in Onaga last June ,the day I was there the library was closed as was the funeral parlor. I found a real nice guy in the newspaper office who went out of his way to help me find Regar cemetery. I found this to be very interesting. I remember the doughboy very well. I remember the night Gene Keeney ran into the thing and wrecked his car. I think that was in 1951 or 1952. Onaga main street( we called Leonard St, Main st.) will never be the same with out the doughboy.

Excellent website, Rae. I'm a lifelong Kansan and have become interested in the Flint Hills so wanted to research some info on their northern reaches.
Onaga brings back many fond memories of the 60's when I used to visit often with a friend, Kent Lefebvre. He was raised in Onaga by his grandmother (can't for the life of me remember her name). We went to Washburn U together but used to visit her on weekends so I had a lot of exposure to Onaga back then.

I found your terrific web site while searching for information about the Kansas Central Railroad, later the LK&W Railroad. I live in Leonardville on down the line on the LK&W in Riley County. It was interesting to find out that the main street "Leonard" was named after Leonard T. Smith. That is also were Leonardville got its name. Our town was first named Alembic, but changed to Leonard when the railroad decided to go our way. It was later changed to Leonardville when the US Post Office said "Leonard" got confused with "Larned," so they added the "ville." You have an excellent web site and I hope to do a similiar site for Leonardville. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

My husband has a distant relative - Frank M. Litchfield - born in Lawrence, Kansas abt. 1870. Migrated to California where he owned a fruit or walnut ranch in Visalia at one time. He was a professional photographer by trade, having headed up the photo bureau at the L.A. Times for about 20 years until his death in 1928. We have only a smattering of information about him, so I am always looking for anything that might give us more leads.
