We recently acquired a late 1800s/early 1900s milk glass miniature oil, or night, lamp marked "Compliments of Jack Hart". A notation in one of our reference books suggests that lamps like this may have been given away by Jack Hart, a clothing store proprietor in Washington, PA. We would appreciate any information anyone can find, and if anyone is interested we can supply a photograph of the lamp.

I am sorry to say that Washington always has and still is a very glum place. It is filled with small town people with small town minds. I was interested to see that one of the guests' biggest & best memories was the building of I-70. Very worldly...even I-70 leads to better places. I would say that the very best view of Washington, PA is in the rear view mirror.

I think Washington is a great place I will always live here,I was born in 1950 the year of the great snow, that always fasinated me.I remember walking up Chestnut St. with my sister to Eighth Ward School, when it was so bitter cold, we were not allowed to wear slacks I was in third grade, and we also had to walk back home for lunch. I tell my grandchildren that I don't know if they believe me or not.

As a descendant of Col. George Morgan of Morganza, I've been fascinated with Washington on a number of visits over the past seven years. Visited the old Happer Mansion of my cousin Matilda (Watson) Happer -- later the old Piatt's Funeral Home -- that has so lovingly been restored by W&J. The Piatts did well by the house. Sorry to say I somehow missed Shorty's Hotdog Stand. Will look if it's still there when I return!

I am going to Washington Co. on September 9th am going to bring my father to see his old apple farm where he and his brothers grew up. He remembers a one room school house that was later turned into a hardware store (?) and is now a resturant. He would like to go there because he has his class picture. He left Washington Co. in 1936 and moved to California. I am making the trip for the first time. Does this one room school story "ring a bell" in anyone's memory. I would hate to miss it. My father doesn't remember much else. I do have a vague idea where the farm is located and he remembers riding a bus to school.

I only lived in Washington for a short while in 1967/67 and have visited several times, the last time being 4/30/04 through 5/9/04. I took many pictures to create scrapbooks for my adult children to show them where they, their father and grandparents went to school and worked.
It was a wonderful vacation as my in-laws toured me through town and pointed out the various points of interest.
I shall return in the future to visit and enjoy your wonderful city.

What a beautiful trip down memory lane for my husband John and I. We were both born and raised in Washington, leaving in 1971 when we were married. Now, looking forward to returning when we retire. My parents had a mom and pop store in west end in the 1950's and my mom had a small restaurant uptown in the 1960's. I would be so very pleased to share with you my recollections...Just let me know the best way. My memories are very vivid and so very special. Hope that I can help in some small way to preserve the uniqueness of our little piece of history. Thank you so very much for this web site. Look forward to hearing from you.

Born in Washington in 1948. Lived on Bruce St. in Tylerdale. Went to Clark Elementary and Wash Hi, class of 1966. My mother, Lil, and sisters - Eva Lou, JoJo, Karen and Sharl - and their families still live there. Spent most of my early years playing ball - Peanut, Little & Pony Leagues - at the park. I remember shopping in downtown before the malls came and going to the Basil Theatre. Remember the big sesqui-centennial celebration in 1960.
My father's picture is shown at Hazel Atlas Plant #1. He's in 4th row and his last name is misspelled. Recognize some of the other men, especially Emory "Squirmy" Douglas. I played ball for him in Little League.

It's strange how a place can "grow" on you in spite of all its perceived so-called faults. Way back when as a teenager I thought we were going to go west, the pit of my stomach would hurt so badly. I wanted "Washington High School" on my diploma and nothing else would do. Well, we remained in Washington, PA, and I was graduated June 2, 1958, from WHS. However, I did leave and was away for 14 years but my husband knew how homesick I was (Rhode Island is not a weekend trip!). With my immediate family still here and most of my 22 aunts and uncles and 45 first cousins (more have been added since!), I wanted our children to grow up knowing their familial roots intimately. We have lived here longer than any other place, and it is still nice to run into a relative or old friend as I scoot around the Washington area. I am eager for uptown project to be completed even though it won't be the uptown of the 1940s/50s, but just being able to get away from the malls, meet old friends for coffee on Main Street, and soak in the atmosphere as we talk about old times is an exciting prospect. Nostalgia used to have a negative connotation, but it is great to know that almost everyone likes to remember old times, old friends, and home. It's good that nostalgia is "in" now.

How 'bout the old Trolly car barn and slate dump down across from the Brownson House....and i can remember when the circus came to town, all the kids out of school watching the animals parade down Jefferson ave. Hi,I lived on E. Katherine Ave., as a 6 year old. My grandparents, Bill and Mary Ford lived on McKinley Street with my Uncle Bob Ford who graduated from Wash High around 1959-60. I was writing a piece on growing up on Katherine Avenue when I decided to check the internet to see what I could find. Those were great times, playing kick the can in the alleys, going to the park on the other side of town, I think the south end. Is there still a park out there? There was a school a couple blocks from my grandparents where we used to go in the summer for activities. Across the street there was an Edsel dealership for a while, right in the middle of the neighborhood. There was a dairy a block or two away where we used to get ice cream cups. And down near the bottom of McKinley, one alleyway over, there was a small store we used to go to for candy. Actually there were neighborhood stores all over town...one at the other end of E. Katherine Avenue that my mother used to send me to. Anyway, thank you for this great walk down memory lane. I never thought I would be walking down that road again. That was a good time in my life.
