What would you like to discuss? Londontowne John
pertaining to what county & state ? VA NC TN GA
Comments:
I am attempting to reconstruct history already done by other family members and then lost. I know previous research had taken us back many great grandfathers to a John English who was the Sherriff of Londontowne. I believe later descendants include a Joshua English who married a Mary Holmes, but perhaps he was a great grand many times nephew.
The original Englishes of my family were from ancient England. They were named English, Ingles, "Angles", to distinguish them from Saxons.
I know the immigrants were in Virginia, then North Carolina, then some went to Tennessee and some spread to Georgia, near Macon.
Any body have any ready data to add before I begin the reinvention of the wheel in ernest?
Also, I am happy to assist anybody who wants someone to look around in Maury or other nearby counties in Tennessee for their English connections. Family helps family.

What would you like to discuss? dau. of Levin Nelson English and her descendants
pertaining to what county & state ? Iowa => Oregon

... Seeking Jeremiah MORRIS, wife Nancy Mary ENGLISH, and children of Iowa & Oregon ...

My research shows:

Jeremiah MORRIS m. 26 Sep 1837 in Des Moines County, Iowa, Nancy ENGLISH (aka Nancy Mary, Mary A., Mary Nancy ENGLISH) b. 16 Dec 1821 in Iowa, daughter of Levin Nelson ENGLISH (b. 1792 in MD) and Mary TUCKER (b. abt. 1790 in KY). Two children born of this union, ages 12 & 8 in 1850 Marion County, Oregon census, were Hiram MORRIS (b. abt. 1838 in Iowa) and Anna MORRIS (b. abt. 1842 in Iowa).

"Mary" ENGLISH/Morris m2 on 11 Jun 1845 "on or near Platte River - now Kansas Territory (one doc says Indian Territory)" on the Oregon Trail, Colman BURNETT (aka Coleman BURNETT). Two BURNETT children also in 1850 household with "Coleman BURNETT" (occupation: miller) and wife "Mary" are William BURNETT (age 4) and Mary J. BURNETT (age 1).

"Emigrants to Oregon In 1845" shows this newly created family of 4 traveled on the same train with the English family, Sarah Eads (Mrs. Levi Burden) and the Burden family. http://www.oregonpioneers.com/1845.htm
Sarah Eads Burden is the sister of Henry William Eads, who married Annie Morris (my maternal 2nd great-grandparents.)

The majority of my Eads family, including Henry, came to Oregon (with the Sager family) on the Gilliam Train in 1844. Captain Cornelius Gilliam's sister Elizabeth was the 2nd wife of Henry Eads's maternal grandfather, Abraham Collet. Henry's father Solomon Eads is listed as an appraiser of the Sager estate. His sister-in-law Lucy Nancy Walker (wife of Moses Eads) and her daughter Elvira cared for the Sager baby after the Sager parents died on the trail.

Jeremiah Morris seems to be out of the picture (deceased or divorced?) by 1845. I do not know if he began the trek to Oregon, and I cannot find a trace of him.

In 1850 Marion County, OR, living next door to the Colman BURNETT family is L. N. ENGLISH (age 67 or 62) and wife Mary (age 60).

Oregon Donation Land Claims state: "Burnett, Colman & wife" arrived in Oregon 1 Dec 1845, and filed DLC# 957 for 625.77 Ac. in T4S R4W Sec. 8,9. Land Claim (settled 18 June 1855) shows Colman b. 1820 in Pittsylvania, VA, and verifies marriage date. Colman signed with his mark (X).

By 1870 census, 4 more BURNETT children have been born.

In 1880 census, C. BURNETT and 4-year-old granddaughter reside together; no others are in the household. Census Place Sublimity, Marion, Oregon. Where are Mary/Nancy and the children (though, children could be on their own by now)? And what happened to first husband, Jeremiah MORRIS?

I strongly suspect the child Anna MORRIS (aka Ann/Annie/Martha Ann MORRIS) to be my gg grandmother, m. 24 Aug 1856 in Spring Valley, Polk Co., Oregon, Henry William EADS (sometimes spelled: EADES), b. 07 Nov 1827 in Cole County, Missouri, son of Solomon EADS and Susannah H. COLLET. Ann MORRIS and H. W. EADS had the following children: Iola Entine EADS, Charles Edward EADS (born as: Lorenzo Dow Eads), Albert McClellan EADS, Jeremiah Morris EADS, William Ellis "Dell" EADS, Acklis Jackson Clinton EADS (aka "Jack" & Jackson Eads), Mittie (Mithilda ?) L. EADS, and one more who died young before 1870.

In 1870 census (due to an April 1870 divorce), Annie Morris Eads is missing from the Eads family household, and is said to have "removed to Marion county." The only female Eads born in Iowa found in 1870 Marion county is one L. A. Eads, age 26, in what appears to be a boarding house in Salem; father of foreign birth. (Note the age is slightly off, but not uncommon in census records, I've discovered.)

This couple remarry to each other later in 1870, and have last child "Mittie"on 19 May 1871. By 1880, H. W. Eads is widowed. We can find no trace of what happened to Annie except family lore. (The lore of one family branch says Annie is half Indian.)

Census and land records show this English family lived in Sublimity, Marion County, Oregon, precinct. Iola Entine (Eads) Miller's obituary states she was born in Sublimity, Oregon. It makes sense that Annie, especially if that young, would go home to her mother's to have her first baby.

I am also hoping you can provide some information that will lead to either proving or disproving this connection. If you have such information, or would like to pursue the possibility of a connection, please contact me.

More EADS/MORRIS information can be found on GenCircles, "Carol Tallman Jones Heritage Hideout" at: http://www.gencircles.com/users/clj3/1

I found you through a Google search for my collateral family named Dowdall and was pleasantly surprised to find the research of Georgia Bopp, which provided some great detail on the first family of Brawner Dowdall.

I'd love to exchange information with Georgia and would greatly appreciate any leads on contacting her.

Again, thanks so much for your time and efforts in sharing your English family research!

Great website! Joseph English (born 1831) is my great-great-grandfather. He and Sarah Williams has a daughter Mary Lawson English who married George Washington Dykes. They had a daughter Fannie Jewel Dykes who married George E. Eaton, and their daughter, Virginia Kate Eaton married my father, John Joseph Poltorak. I would like any information that anyone has on this part of the English family or any descendants in the line that I've mentioned. There is also a letter on the English family website written by my uncle, James Harding Morris, and posted by Melinda Morris Gardner. It would appear that Melinda and I are cousins. I tried to email her at the address listed, and it bounced. If anyone knows how I can contact her, I'd really appreciate that. Once I gather all of the info that I have on my part of the family, I'll send it in. Thanks so much! Barb

hello. i am the great grandson of john t. gross and lavonia english. i now live on st.simons island, ga. i so appreciate your website. i did not know if you were aware of the old english family cemetery in washington county, ga. it is located several miles from bartow, georgia on what i was told as a child was once the site of the old english family land. the old home there burned many years ago and the land sold, but the cemetery remains, hidden in the woods on the edge of cotton fields. there are many buried there. some birth dates dating from the 1700's. some graves stones no longer visible. the last person buried there was lavonia english gross in 1920. it was wildly overgrown the last time i was there, but still surrounded by a chain link fence put up in the 1950's. if there is any interest in its exact location you may contact me at the e-mail address above.

What would you like to discuss? Does he have siblings?
pertaining to what county & state ? Burlington Co, NJ
Comments:
I have hit a wall with a James C English b about 1818 in Burlington Co NJ. We do not know what the C stands for except that it appears in several generations. James married a Catherine Smith b 1820. Her mother is Elizabeth Smith b 1790 and lived with them till her death in Philadelphia. The family lived in North liberties ward 5 area. He was a paperhanger as were his children...George Thomas, James, Hannah, Edmund C, Catherine (called Kate), Elwood, Ida, and Adelaide.

The 1880 census lists James a being born Burlinton Co NJ and both of his parents being born in NJ as well. My suspicion is that they are related to the English Creek settlement of NJ or the English's that lived in Chesterfield Twp Burlington Co. There is a George that lived there during the 1830 census and he has a son of the correct age, plus there is a Thomas English and a Levi living very close by. They were farmers and had servants living with them. Levi had a daughter name Mary C English and a son named James and Elwood. Weird if they are related and they named their kids the same...

If anyone thinks they know something I would love to hear about it. Adelaide has living decendents and they state the family had money until they lost it after the civil war. The rumor was they were into extensive mills of some sort, hence the English Creek possibility.

I think Thomas and Levi are James's brothers but I can't prove it, with George being their father.

Help?

Loved your Web pages!

You have certainly amassed TONS of info about English-surname ancestors.

I have pretty well hit the wall with my ancestor.

My grandfather was William Wesley English. b - 28 Sept 1850 in Chillicothe, Ohio. d - 17 Nov 1938 in Leavenworth, Kansas.

His death certificate does not identify his parents.

Per his obit, he purportedly attended schools in West Virginia.

I suspect that he had parents -- but I am not totally convinced at this point. Their identities have totally eluded me.

I am about to conclude that either: 1. my ancestors were aliens (of the "take me to your leader" variety or 2. that
my great grandparents arrived in Kansas shortly ahead of a
posse and promptly went into the witness protection program.

I have marriage records showing marriage to Carrie Cogswell in 1876, and census records are pretty complete 1880 on. Everything before my grandfather's arrival in Kansas (circa 1872) is pretty much a black hole.

If any English researchers stumble accross ANYTHING re
William Wesley English, I would certainly appreciate it.

Am stuck at the moment so does anybody in the group have as their ancestors William George English and Margaret Reilly who were in Dublin in 1838? The 1838 date relates to the birth, in Dublin, of a son also named William George English.

William George English's sen., occupation was listed by his son, as delivery stable employee but whether this was in Dublin or not is anybody's guess.

Family tradition has it that other children from Wm Geo and Marg Reilly may have emigrated to America but the younger William George English went to Australia circa 1856. So if anybody can help me get out of Dublin it would be appreciated.

A friend has asked how she may identify the parent(s) of her mother who was born about 1920 in England and given to up to adoption. Her mother, now deceased, did not know the name of her parents. Her mother was given the surname of her adoptive parents. Any clues on where to start and what the English laws permit relative to opening adoption papers?

William ENGLISH B abt 1802 with wife WALLACE, came to Bytown, ON.,CAN where they had three sons: William, John Wallace, & Edward. In 1828 the boys were orphaned, with both parents dieing at different times of the same year.

I have yet to discover who raised the boys when they were orphaned. John Wallace & his wife, Sarah Jane FRY moved to WI with their first two children in 1848. William, his wife Christina and several children moved to WI several years later. Edward shows in two WI census records and as yet to be located elsewhere.

John Wallace became very wealthy in his trade as a saddle maker and owner of a company which provided saddles, knapsacks and haver sacks to the government during the Civil War, and retired at 40 yrs. and moved his family to IA. to yet become more waealthy as a farmer.

William and his family resided in Ashland, Ashland CO., WI. many years, having their last five children there. The family later moved to MN where Christina died. Willam died three months after Christina at is sons home in WI. Their married children moved to the Dakota's, & MT where I am searcing for cousins

After John Wallace and sarah died their married children moved to NE., IA., WA. & CA., where I am looking for cousins.

Should anyone have any info on this family please contact me. I will exchange records, of which I have an abundant amount. I lso have an ENGLISH site, by invitation only.

I hope someone out there can help me. I am trying to find information on my great-grandma as I know essentially nothing of her family. I have an old obit listing a little information though but ive hit dead ends every time ive looked for anything on the people. Her name was Allie Pearl and I dont even have a birth date. I do know that her first son (my grandpa was born in 1914). She had 5 brothers: D.P., Sam, Ed, Will, and Zake or Zeke. My mom knows that they came from Oklahoma (Stigler maybe?) but lived some time in Arkansas. I have found a man I believe is my great-grandma's brother in OK dying in the year 1967 in a county near Haskell where Stigler is. Oh, the obit is for great-grandma's brother DP I almost forgot about him. I know he was died in 1949 at 68 years old. I also have a family reunion posting from about the same time, maybe a little later mentioning an Elbert and a Leeman. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
I'm from England and I'm trying to help my Mum with our family tree. We are looking for Alban Milburn English who was born in Bath UK (where I live now)on 13th November 1845.He shows on your Census record for Virginia 1870 as being called 'Albin M' English, just to confuse matters!! We know he married Margaret Fanny Lane around 1870 in Tazewell County Court House in Virginia. They had 4 children
approx D/O/B John H 1871
Ferdinand E 1874
Clara 1876
Janet E 1879
I would LOVE to hear from anyone that can shed some light on this end of our family. It seems they went to the States, and then got lost. The only other entry we have is Alban buying 'Baylin Street Wharf, Pensacola, Florida on 9th Sept 1879 for ú6000 from P.K. Hickey but we have no record of him living there.

My Mum has published our family tree 'The History of The English Family in Bath 1770-1890' and it's so interesting as I have a "Countess Isabella English" and an 'Archbishop Ferdinand English' as ancestors. We really would like to find our US English cousins and all help is gratefully received.

Here are some modern links for you to check out too,I'm a Homeopath/Psychic and my website is www.maryenglish.com my brother is
