Comments:
John Woodard Hinton, Sr. (1822-1844) was my great-g-g-grandfather. He married Mary Angelina Pittman Roberts Wimberly. He died shortly after their son John Woodard Hinton, Jr. was born in 1844. "Ann" Pittman and her husband William Wimberly reared my great-great grandfather. He was married to Angelina Jane "Jennie" Knighton. They are all buried in Bienville Parish. I was on your sight trying to find any more information on these two men. My great-grandfather was Hugh Thomas Hinton and his son William Thomas Hinton was my grandfather. The last two men lived in Shelby Co. Texas. I have visited most of the relative's graves in Bienville Parish. Your site is very good.

Comments:
My great-grandfather, Alex, was born in Autauga, AL, later moving to Itawamba County, MS, and then to Arkansas. After his first wife died at McNeil, AR, he moved to Bienville, LA, where family lore says he married a "Mrs. Higginbotham." He died in 1923 and was buried in Bienville Parish. There are some indications that his family knew the Higginbotham family in Alabama, and perhaps this friendship led him to move to Bienville. I would be grateful to anyone who could shed some light on our mysterious "Mrs. Higginbotham."

My GF, GGM, and GGF are buried in New Hope Cemetery, near Dodson, LA. Still trying to locate record or indication of GG grandfather, Thomas Allen, and his wife Alma Hight or Hite, who married in Choctaw County, AL. What year did they arrive? 1850 + or -
Where did they come from? Davidson County, TN
Comments:
John Clark Hays was my great great grandfather and was, I believe, my first Hays ancestor to live in what is now Bienville Parish. His parents and the family moved to Claiborne Parish from Davidson County, TN, well before Bienville was carved out in 1848. John Clark later moved down to Bienville, as best I can tell, leaving the other Hays in what is now Claiborne Parish.

On my Watts side, Calvin Jones Watts, my great grandfather, moved with his family from Stewart County, GA, to Bienville Parish about 1852. They settled around Ringgold.

I am stil trying to determine the identity of my Watts great great grandparents.

Comments:
"Gus" was born in 1867. No one knows where. It is rumored
that he was orphaned and was raised by George Lester. He
married George's daughter Julia Amanda Lester.
Gus and Julie had ll children. On the 1910 Census it is
recorded that Gus' father was born in Illinois.
I don't think he was an orphan but if he was I believe we
can find his parents. On one of the Census' Gus' last name
is spelled Bollier. I found a Peter Bolier married Amanda Pease in Bienville Parish in 1865. I don't know, but this
could be Gus' parents. That's what I'm looking for now.
An 1870 Bienville Parish Census Record may turn something up.

Who was your first Bienville Parish ancestor? Jasper Smith/ Katherine Smith
What year did they arrive? between 1840-1850
Where did they come from? Noxubee County, MS?
Comments:
I found a Jasper Smith in Noxubee County, MS. He was born abt. 1816 in TN. Katherine was born abt. 1820 in GA.
One of their first children was born in MS.

So I believe this to be the Jasper Smith who was married to Katherine. The ages on the 1840 census fits the Jasper Smith listed. On the 1840 census no children are listed.

By 1870 Jasper and Catherine Smith are living in Bell County, TX. Many of their children listed were born in LA.

By 1880 Jasper and Catherine Smith are living with two sons listed James E. and William M. in Wise County, TX.

I am curious whether we can find Jasper and Katherine in Bienville other than on the 1850 census.

I belive they may have still been there in 1860; although, I found a J.T. Smith and Ann Smith with children with similar names and birth ages living in Starrville, Smith County, TX on the 1860 census.

Reddick Bryan traveled to Bienville Parish in the fall of 1838. I am a descendant of his son, Terrell Bryan, who left Bienville to settle in Erath County, Texas following the war. I am very interested in any information about these families and have much to share.

Bienville family names include BRYAN, REGAN, WATTS, ALBRITTON, HAMMETT, PITMAN, and WIMBERLY. I have over 30 transcribed documents and letters pertaining to these families on my web pages. Also on the web pages are pictures of Reddick and Elizabeth Bryan and pictures of other family members who lived in Bienville Parish. I would love to hear from other descendants of Reddick and Elizabeth.

Hello! Not sure who gets this but please pass this on. This is one of Cordelia Taylor's granddaughters, Lalla Camp Cox, (Barbara's daughter). Just happened across this site looking for the Bienville Democrat. I'm curious to know if there is information in the book mentioned ("History of Bienville Parish") about the Taylors. I would assume so but if there isn't, Mary Belle Tuten, who was grannies sister-in-law, does some geneology work and may have something to add. She still lives Ruston. Someone may even want to ask her if she has a copy of the Vol I book Billie created. Sounds like something Aunt Mary Belle would have bought.
Hope all is well!

I have been researching my family history for several years now. I am at a stand still because I cannot get past my gggrandfather whose name is David Chanler and he was married to Nancy Long Sledge. They are buried in Pinehill Cemetary in Minden, LA. The story I have been told is that a grandfather during the Civil War had a run in with a union soldier that threatened to kill him and his family. So in the middle of the night he up and moved his family and changed his name from DeLakey or Lakey to Chanler. Not sure where this took place, may have been in Mississippi. If you have any information that you can share please email me at erhill56@aol.com Thank you Liz

I have been searching sites to find out about my grandparents without success. It is very frustrating to me. I can find their names and birthdates but past that I do not know. Guess I'm too computer illiterate. They both lived in bienville for as long as I know but no one seems to know where they were born or who their parents were. All these webs sites are confusing to people like me. I just want to be able to get on, type in their names and hit search to find something but it just doesn't work that away I guess. Is there a site to just find out parents, birthplace, ect.? Please help me-I don't know where to go from here. Thanks,
Pam

To whom it may concern. Since 1967, I have wanted to visit the area of La. where the infamous Barrow Gang was ambushed. On July 27th, 2002 I finally made it. I visited Arcadia and Gibsland, then on to the marker on the Gibsland highway. For me...it was a closer to a college paper I wrote these many years ago. The people were most helpful and completely understood my passion for this historic event. I thank the people of your beautiful state and wish them all the luck. I leave you now...a new friend and admirer..............Jett David Rink
