Leland Keneth Rust, born in IN (Evasville?) c. 1866, changed his last name to Monroe sometime between 1885 (after his mother, Mary E. Nall Rust, died in Evansville, and 1895. I'm trying to pinpoint when and where he changed his name, and why, if possible. His father was William H. Rust, a riverboat captain, one vessel being the "Bowling Green." Lee Monroe married Fannie Amanda Church from Sullivan County IN on Aug 5 1895, and on Christmas day, my grandfather, Leland Fuller Monroe, was born, some say in Turesela IN. I don't think that is accurate. Lee Monroe (Rust) lived in Evansville, Vigo county, Indianapolis IN, that I know of. He was in Marion Co., and I'm not sure about Union Co., but quite possible. Can you steer me to a place where I could find name change records for those areas or in In? I live in Oregon, but have been thinking seriously of coming to Indiana to try to solve this puzzle. My grandfather was William Burton (Bert) Liston, and married Rosetta (Rosa) May Price in 1909. My dad Lester L. Liston was born on Nov. 3, 1909, in Sullivan, IN. They had a second child Irene who may have been born in 1913. Bert died in June 1913, according to info you sent me on January 24, 2009. Rosa married James Barekman in 1914, and they had two children, Robert born Dec 24, 1915, and Mary E. who may have been born in 1917. In 1918, James was killed in a mine accident. Rosa left the children with family and disappeared. Lester and Robert lived into the 1990s, but it is believed that Irene and Mary died from influenza at early ages. I am trying confirm Robert, Irene and Mary's births, what happen to Rosa and James' death. If there are any Listons, Prices, Barekmans or anybody that can help, that would be appreciated. Bob

My great grandfather was born inRandolph, VT in 1805. The next record I have for him is in Canada at this sister Ann Maria wedding in 1832. The 1830 census for Vigo, Indiana shows a William P Dexter alone. He married in Galena, Illinois in 1840. Do you have any information on the William P Dexter in Vigo. My great great grandfather's brother, Dr. Eliphalet Shattuck, settled in Prairie Creek, Vigo Co. in 1820. My gg grandfather, George C. Shattuck also lived in Vigo Co. near Fort Harrison from 1817-1827. His wife, Anne Bronson, had a brother, Harvey Bronson/Brunson, who served with the U.S. Mounted Rangers from Ohio during the War of 1812, having served the latter part of his service in Vincennes, Knox Co. and was discharged from there. I have not found any records for George Shattuck in Vigo Co., nor Harvey Brunson/Bronson in Knox Co. and would be interested in finding something about them.

My mom just recently passed away. And in going thru wsome of her things I found she was married before to a Robert Spice was killed in 1945 and she had 6 children with this man. I also found her birth certificate which listed her parents as Edward Shuey and Lily Mae Butts Shuey and in othe papers listed my grandmother as being a full blooded Indian. I'm very interested in finding what every family is left if any from my mother history. It looks like I could have several half brothers and sisters out ther some where. I know she had 8 brother and they have all passed away. I don't know if they had any children or not.

I am connected to Vigo County by both my father's SHULL and my mother's ECKARD families.
My ggg-grandparents Joseph F. and Sarah Shull settled in Nevins Twp. in 1830's and my gg-granddad Henry Eckard was born in Terre Haute in 1855.
Joseph and Sarah SHULL died (late 1840's)and are buried in Vigo County.
It would "make my day" to find exactly where they are buried.
There were a number of SHULLs in Vigo County in the 1840's and later as well as in Clay County.

In the years between 1820 and 1835 several families moved from Knox County Tennessee to Vigo and Clark Counties. My gggrandfather Andrew McMillan arrived in Clark Co in 1833. His first wife Margaret died in 1835 and he married Catherine Willson of Knox Co tn. After Andrew died in 1838, Catherine married Russel r. McBath in 1841 and resided in Vigo County. Between 1841 and 1846 Catherine died, presumely in Vigo County. I would like to discover when she died and where.

Great site! I have found a lot of good information on this site. I am looking for information on Logan Lowell Miller and Mildred Stark. Although Logan was married he and Mildred had a child, Herbert Paul Miller, in Terre Haute in 1920. Herbert is my husband's birth father. I am looking for ANY info on my father, Claude E. Smith, b.1903 in CA.; son of David A. Smith of Indiana and Jessie Lane. Claude married my mother, Charlotte Fields of Terre Haute in 1940. They divorced a few years later. Reportedly Claude was married previously and had other children. My sister and two brothers (one is my twin) are the great, great, great, grandchildren of Harrison Denny, who settled in Otter Creek township shortly after serving in the War of 1812. The "old Denny home" which was located just West of Roselawn Cemetery, was demolished last year. The "old family cemetery" is located at about 2000 Hassleburger Rd. At one time our family farmed close to 800 acres. I have some documented family history via a book that my father ( Robert Harrison Denny ) left ( History of Vigo county circa 1890 )I'm interested if any other family history exsists; if so, I'd be greatful if someboby would share any info with me.

My gr gr grandfather John Ryan was born about 1800 in VA and married Nancy Lewellen 25 Jan 1822 in Monongalia Co VA/WV.
Nancy died about 1847 in Indiana and her daughter who was born in 1846 was taken in by her brother Rawley Lewellen and his wife Catherine. I need to know what happened to John Ryan? Where and when did he get married again?

According to family lore, the McNiel/McNeil family, along with several other families crossed the Cumberland Gap from the Carolinas to ultimately settle in the Indian Territory (Indiana) during the late 1700's. The family lived in Fontanet Twp for many years. They were coal miners, I believe. Henry and Nancy's family consisted of Ernest, Edith, Forest, Kenneth,and Dorothy. For many years they held a reunion during the Fontanet Bean Dinner weekend so that they could meet with old friends. Forest was the only one to remain in Vigo County. He taught at Fontanet and later was the principal there. He passed in 1993. I am interested in information about his family prior to his parents.

Daniel and Margaret Kaylor are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, without tombstones. Daniel died 1884, Margaret 1880. Their son John came to central IL and is my husbands great-grandfather.
John Tedrow died ca 1815, Ft. Sackville, nr Vincennes, IN at a young age. His wife Mary ELY later married Daniel Helt in Vigo Co. (recorded under TEEHOM) and resided in Vermillion Co IN. John and Mary are my husbands 3rd greatgrandparents.

Several cousins and I are researching Ralph R. / Rafe Conover and his brother William Conover. They were brick masons in Terre Haute from about 1840 for Ralph and 1855-56 for William. Another Conover man was in the area in 1818 and we have found the grave of a child. The families that they intermarried with were men that worked as masons ,too.
The Conovers were from New Jersey.

After Caroline and Albert's deaths, he married Albertina Bruner and had 3 more sons - Charles, Joseph and Albert. His farmland is not cut down the middle by I-70 east of town.
