Read a few postings in the message board and found one I have to reply to. In regard to PEGGY WIER TEBBETTS complaining about the Shelby county genweb providing information that is found in at least four other places on the internet and subsequently having the Shelby county site remove that info is a sickening thought for a genealogy researcher. And this woman is a researcher herself??? Are you kidding? Of what value is genealogy to PEGGY WIER TEBBETTS if she thinks her family info is a public embarassment. I just want to say that my family genealogy has several names mentioned at the Shelby county site (ALL OF THEM DECEASED) including birth and death dates and links to SSDI info ... I do not have a Nazi issue with my family info being publicized. I co-relate the genweb info with a local newspaper's obituary column or a funeral home's death and burial records or the US government's SSDI index and the such. I think it is absolutely acceptable that my deceased relative's info is public and I am gracious to the US Genweb for providing such a wonderful means of accessing such info. Maybe PEGGY WIER TEBBETT's particular ancestor is above all the rest of us (at least Peggy thinks so) and I guess that's okay too. I am a fortunate son, I guess, in that the WIER and TEBBETTS are not in my family tree otherwise I would do with that info exactly what I have always done ... post it all over the internet in every place I can find applicable with the hopes of connecting with other family members. But, maybe PEGGY WIER TEBBETTS has some dark horrible people in her family that she would just as soon the world no know about. If that is the case, then I truly feel sorry for PEGGY and I hope she gets over her personal issues before they eat the very life away from her and SHE become a name on the genweb that someone else may want erased from history.

As for "Ray" who was asked (or was it FORCED?) to resign the post here, I extend my gratitude to you for the efforts you have made that simplify research for so many grateful people. I am sorry that you were victimized by a single ungrateful researcher. After reading many of the posts on the message board I can see that the people who visit this site most frequently have seen a disturbing downfall in the quality of the site. Would be great to have you back but I cannot see that happening as long as the Genealogy Gestapo is after you. Good luck with whatever you are doing now and may God Bless you and your family (be they living or deceased, public or private, black or white).

Just me ranting, I guess...

nate

Hello to all and I'm having a problem with this site ... I wonder if others are experiencing. This morning was the first time I ever went to the Shelby county TX genweb site. Took ages for the page to finally download while my cursor and keyboard were locked up in the process. Then, I find that the link in my favorites list to Montgomery county genweb now takes me to Shelby county. I have tried to link to Montgomery county genweb via all surrounding counties which have links to their neighbors but to no avail ... they all lead me to Shelby county. Likewise, the Montgomery county link from the TX Genweb counties list takes me to Shelby co as well. I tried rebooting my computer and that fixed nothing. Am having no problems with any other links in my favorites list. Am not able to get to the Montg co page via any avenue I try ... all links lead to Shelby co.

Are you having this problem too? If so, how do you repair it and what causes this headache and how do I get to the Montg co page again and from where do I find a link to that site that does not take me to Shleby county? I'm afraid the Shleby county site is dumping something on me that I do not want and has (thus far) destroyed my ability to access Montg co. Please email me privately with any response as I will not be returning to Shelby county site to view replies - kulture_klub@hotmail.com .

Thanks,
nate

The problems coming about on our GenWeb site and rootsweb site, all came about when Ray resigned. I do not know him, but know the records he has made available. He was forced to resign because of being asked and finally forced to remove a name from a cemetery list (and other records). We did not know who forced the issue or why. One of the coordinators came on line and explained the unknown person's request and why the State Coordinator's office forced Ray to remove her relatives name from the cemetery list.

The list was basically saying, they don't want these secondary records altered and thought we had a problem protecting them from people ignorant of records and genealogy. They further said that there was something unacceptable about making the deceased an unknown person, but if they knew why, it might make a difference. Other than these issues, there was an impression that Ray had been bullied. Some people thought if the family wanted the name removed...just remove it.

We speculated all through the discussion, and the things that were said kept being voided out when new information became available. We got the deceased persons name with wife, and another speculation developed that it was a grieving widow that didn't want her husbands name on the internet --that most people would feel sorry for.

The name of the deceased person's family was found, along with public records on the internet 1920, 1930 census and ssdi record --which showed it is unreasonableto think you could keep these records off the internet--and that this person's genealogy was in several places on the internet, except the Shelby County Texas site. It was found that the person who had pressured Ray Jackson, was Peggy Wier Tebbetts, an internet genelogist and very active person in several GenWeb Sites, employee of Ancestry and rootsweb Wier site coordinator.

When Peggy came on line to the discussion list she was making a case of how persecuted her family had been, and she had been watching the whole discussion. She had set all of us up, making us guess who and why and took what we were guessing and made it into some sort of persecution--people saying all kinds of things about her and her family, and one person dragging up everything they could find on her family! The letter that she wrote didn't make sense and her excuse didn't add up, and instead of pulling on peoples sympatheic heart strings, it would have been a good idea for her to tell us why. I have written to Peggy and discussed why her letter seemed to be a bogas explanation.

The people on the list are such retards that discovering all this, needed to be under some Nazi type wing of Rootsweb, and shut down any further discussion about this. It takes a Super Race to manage and censor what genealogy buffs and their investigating minds will come up with.

The event stemming from Ray's resignation brought out some problems GenWeb and all the overlapping genealogy groups need to do something about. If they are letting the big-wigs in genealogy (coordinators, list owners) erase names, that's a problem. If one coordinator is asking another for a favor, the coordinators should know what is politically correct and what is not and how to resolve it before the regular users get hurt and involved. They need to do something about these people jumping into our list and censoring. It comes off unAmerican.

In our case, we could have used a moderator to keep us on track, but we shouldn't have to be solving the problems of how to run the Help Desk.

We can all get kicked around by Rootsweb, GenWeb, and all these FREE sites--Ancestry owns them. I personally don't want to pay an expensive fee for their services --knowing some of that money is supporting the people at Rootsweb and GenWeb -- to treat us so badly. They definintely don't value their users. Ancestry values it's users--it gets money from us.

I have taken my name off all Rootsweb lists, and vowed not to post anything again. This is the last one...so kill the messenger. Knowing that so called professionals are doing some of this stuff, makes this hobby ..no fun and as cut-throat as people are in the business world.

This site is getting better and better. I don't know the reason for the change, and it's none of my business, but I liked the old site and am growing to like the new one. The link to the Shelby Co. Historical Society makes the site almost as easy to navigate as the previous one. Still have a glitch with Military Records but I'm sure it will shortly be handled.

I was working so hard I missed a week or two coming to the website and find it is totally changed! The web site WAS the best one I had ever seen and now, like it has been said, it is just like all the others. I dont know what happened, but wish someone would fill me in. All the wonderful information that was at our fingertips is jsut gone. I am glad I am not just now finding the site because I would not have any of the information I now have on 5 generations of our family!

Both my parents were born in Shelby County. Both sets of Grandparents were also. Some of my Great Grandparents were born in Shelby County. I have spent many enjoyable hours researching through the Shelby County website. I have found an extreme amount of useful information through this web site. One of the things I really liked was the ease of finding information. It was all very close at hand. I have told many people that the Shelby County web site was the very best I had ever visited.
Now, for some reason, that has all changed. The Shelby County web site looks exactly like thousands of other web sites around the country, and is no longer the great example it once was. At this point, I would say, it's not even average.
I feel very sorry for Shelby County, and for all the future researchers who will not be able to see what a really great web site once looked like.

This site sucks!!! It is now like all other counties in the USA. Crap !! Thank God I dowloaded most of the info on the McGee family, which I am part of. I hope he starts up his own web page and continue to do such great work for Shelby Co.

My family was in Shelby Co. in the 1930's and the 1940's. We attended school in Gooberhill, Dreka, Choice and later were in the Center High School before leaving the county. Our order of birth was Joe, Bonnie Joyce and James. We would love to hear from anyone that might see this and remember. Our parents were Herbert Lee Bodine and Essie B. (Goings) Bodine. I started school at age 5 and my earliest memories are vague.

Thank you for all the work that was done placing the marriages online. They have provided me with fuel with which zeros in on where my ancestors Warmack, Cartwright, and Holland finally landed once the journey ended from Benton Co., TN. I won't be at all disappointed if I was contacted by someone of any of these families. I plan to do the same as soon as I am able to find a contact. With a website with such input as this one has, genealogy is made a little easier, more enjoyable making connections. Thanks again for your work, time and dedication. I am one of many many great great great great grandchildren of Moses Fisk Roberts and Amanda Gant. On your cemetary listing you show the marker that is placed on his grave and there is a name spelled wrong. Moses was married first to Amanda Gant not Grant. Her family was also important to Texas history. If a historical marker is wrong you can only wonder what problems this can cause some one just starting to look up their family tree. I only wish other geneology sites were half as good as the one for Shelby Co. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK . Patsy Turner

I didn't mean to send my previous message twice. This is the first time I've been to this site. Just found it today. If you know of Noveline Parker (Samford), my mother, she is 70 years old today. Also wanted to announce that my brother, Tom Samford, who graduated at Center High School , 1975 I believe, passed away in June. He was buried at the cemetary on the Hill in Shelbyville near my grandmother (Ivie). No marker has yet been put. We were awaiting for autopsy results still. We are in Houston and I've been here my entire life but my most special and favorite times in my life were with my grandparents in Center on their farm off of Good Hope Cemetary Road. I hated that we sold that place as I didn't want to but the other remaining inheritor's did and I couldn't afford to buy them out. Very sad. One more thing. I've been wanting to move back to Center, Shelbyville, Nacogdoches for a long time, but I need to know of a job that I can make atleast what I make now and I need to know of any old homes for rent maybe. Please reply. I would so appreciate it. If you want to email me because you knew of any of my family please feel free to do so. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

My family, on my father's side, resided in Shelby County for many years. My grandfather's name is Bonner M. Doggett who died in about 1925. My grandmother's name is Amanda King Doggett. She died around 1959. My aunt's names are Exa, Gladys, Inez, and Marie. My uncle's names are Edgar Oren, Guy, and Clarence. My father's name is Buford L. Doggett. I know my name is spelled differently. My father changed the spelling when he was in the army. I do not know why. I have noticed there have been a lot of Doggetts in Shelby County down through the years, most of whom I do not know. I do, however have one who I know, a cousin whose maiden name was Anne Doggett. I have not seen or spoken with her in over 35 years and I would love to contact her. I do not know if you perform services such as this, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me. Thank you, Alan Daggett

seeking descendants of James Perry Anderson & Rosie Wilburn

It is our responsibility to verify the past or the future may be lost forever.......
This website is invaluable to the documentation of Shelby County residents and should be the blue print for all county websites to follow!!!
I had 8 grandparents in "Texas" before 1830 and have researched my ancestral lines for almost 30 years finding more errors than facts because too many researchers just copy and paste whatever they find assuming it has been verified when it too was just copied and passed on.
I don't want somebody else's grandma or grampaw or aunt or uncle and thanks to your website, there's no reason anybody should get stuck with one from Shelby County!!!

Mr. Jackson:
I have lost track of time this weekend on your wonderful website! My STRONG lineage first appears on the 1850 census - Isham Strong who came to Shelby County from Virginia. He (or his lineage) gave the land for the Strong Cemetery and Strong School. By computer, I've traced some info on the first Strong who came from England in the 1600's. FLEMING, VAUGHN, and ESTES are other descendents and I've read quiet a bit about them. My grandparents were Virgil and Fleta (Fleming) Strong. It's so interesting! This is such a great website and I will send this link to others. Susan Strong Logsdon Age 39 slogsdon@QZIP.net Center, TX

One of the best geneaology sites I've seen in the sixth months I've been doing research. I spent three exasperating weeks on rootsweb and ancestry.com getting confused by all the Permenter lines. It was straightened out immediately when I visited this site. Thanks for all your hard work. It's wonderful! Nancy Permenter

Mr. Jackson, I appreciate your timely search and response. Perhaps Henry J. Wilson was in Nacogdoches County. Can you tell me how to access the 1870 census for that county? Knowing where he was then may give a clue to where he is buried.

Your web site has been very interesting and helpful; however, I am still looking for more informtion about my great grandfather Henry Jonathan Wilson, husband of Medie (Almedia or Meddie) Green. He does not appear on the 1870 Census but does on the 1860 and 1880 records. Also, even though he supposedly died in 1935, I have not found any information about the location of his grave. His wife Medie and daughter Zetella Wilson Stephenson are buried in the Greenwood cemetery outside Garrison, but he is not listed there. I would appreciate any leads regarding his death/burial and their marriage record, although it probably burned in the courthouse fire of 1882.

Thanks to you, Annette, for your assistance and to all who have contributed information.

I appreciate all of your hard work in maintaining Shelby County's history and genealogy. Until I became aware of the Shelby County Historical Society 2 or 3 years ago, I knew almost nothing about my husband's family, except that a whole lot of Hugheses were buried at Sardis Cemetery. I have been married to James "Sleepy" Hughes for 47 years, who was born and raised in the Center/Shelbyville area. He is the son of Jim Ferrell Hughes and Ila Gaye Powell. Warner Lanier "Clem" Hughes is my husband's grandfather; James McCain Hughes is his great-grandfather; and Ennis Hughes is his great-great-grandfather. However, I ran into a roadblock with the Powell family and know nothing except that Ila Gaye was the daughter of John W. Powell and Susan "Sudie" (Lunsford, I think) who are buried at Campti.

Hello, again! Just ran down the entire list of guests signed in, and found a few people if their emails are still correct. I also stopped into the Center Historical Museum, just off the Square and Mr. Jackson showed me the Hooper Bible Home Page on the Computer which is so old and incomplete and very sad, people. We need a NEW BIBLE on the Internet (now that's a multi-million dollar idea) and I am going to try and connect with a few of the Hoopers still living and holding on in Center. Just wish I could be Governor to save small town Texas! I have two years to become the most famous person in the world. I first started off in advertising and all of my funny expressions over the years are in all of the commercials, etc. Anyway, I've had it with the behind the scenes in the back door entry, etc. Well! Forgot to mention that Miss Wiseman married 6 times, all widowed and the last man was Dean/Deen and so, having had children by each man, she supposedly I was told by Grandmother died a famous lady, a legend in Texas and was known as "Grandma Dean". Where are all of these cousins? HELP! I'm going to start again on my idea of a TV Station in Huntsville, the funniest in the world!

Hello! This is me! Funniest girl in Texas! My ancestor is Catherine Caroline Hooper who married Daniel M. Wiseman, who came to Shelby County with a brother, and his name might have been George, but I've forgotten. They came from North Carolina directly with the Hoopers and they immigrated from Berlin, Germany in 1836. Their daughter Miss Wiseman, which we don't know married John Anderson Wheeler, son of Judge Royall Tyler Wheeler, Chief Justice of Texas, who officiated at her first marriage to a Mr. Brown. There was only one child, "Mr. Wheeler", later referred to as John, or Sam Houston, a Methodist Preacher, genius, artist, mechanical genius, musician and town leader of Rosebud, Texas. I'm related to the Shaws, Straws, Buckners, Wheelers, Farleys, Settles, Hoopers, Wisemans therefore perhaps, some Walkers and Clarks, and maybe, half of all of y'all! Love, Elaine Henderson
I'm looking forward to a family reunion. Keep me informed.

I have been to the beautiful Court House there. I found my Great-grandfathers and Great-grandmother's marriage. The court house still had the original. They were so kind there to let me have it. They were married in 1885.
I plan on making a return trip within the next few months.
