Dear Jim,
My father Walter Duane was stationed at Camp Drake and we as a family lived there from 1955 to 1957. We lived in Grant Heights and thank you so much for posting of those pictures. I was a child when we lived there, but I have may vivid memories of Japan.
My father died at age 52 and I have some wonderful pictures of Japan.
Thanks for sharing,

The info you provided on your site was extremely helpful in assisting me with a "missing link" in my ancestry. The link to the decendents of Isaac Harman provided the data I needed to get past a big blank in my ancestry.
Thank you!

Super visit To camp Owada, my friends. I have enjoyed the pics, as my pictures have been long lost. My time in Japan was approx. 10 1954 to 10 1955, when my mom died, and I returned to US to finish my 3 months duty. I really enjoyed our joint duty with the Air Force guys at Owada, and am especially proud to have served under US Army Capt. Pinto, a very fine gentleman who took good care of his guys.
Another of my thoughts is about a tiny beer bar near camp Owada operated by a family with the name Schmizou, I think.
Any thoughts on these memories will be greatly appreciated, believe me !
I must tell you about my motorcycle days there, three of us GIS bought bikes during 1955, A Sgt (Name forgotten), another forgotten soul from NY , and me from Michigan bought some Jap bikes (I didn't have much saved up so mine was only a 90 CC Yamaguchi, I think that meant Mountain Mouth). On my first trip to Tachikawa with the guys, I ran my front wheel into a honeybucket, much to the chagrin of a very small farmer, who made up for his size with a sharp looking hoe,or something, any way I didn't want to get him any madder, so I lifted my front wheel out of the yuck, started the mini engine, and beat it out of there. My friends got a large charge out of all this!

Wishing the Carpenter' family a very happy and joyful Christmas holiday. Also, continued good health, happiness and prosperity for the coming New Year!
I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to work with you during the past two years in updating the Owada Receiver Site information contained in your "Army Daze" web site. It was an especially informative and rewarding experience for me! Visiting the Owada Receiver Site afer 38 years, meeting the Air Force personnel, and seeing the recently constructed receiver site facility was quite a memorable experience. I now have memories and pictures to enjoy that date from my Owada tour 1961-1965 to my visits in September 2002 and 2003. It was your "Army Daze" web site that proved to be the inspiration that kept me going. Also, a debt of gratitude to the Air Force personnel for their assistance, cooperation and hospitality that made it all possible. Thanks again for your continued help and support. Regards, john

Am I lucky or what:) Just surfing this morning looking for additional photos of military in Japan during the early days. You have a truly wonderful and well maintained website. Your photos are great and many of the Tokyo street scenese look very familiar. I spent about 7 years in Japan on 3 tours, 1 year at Fuchu Air Station at Hq 5th Air Force. Traveled all over the Tokyo area, especially my favorite spot Shinjiku (Spelling?) I had tons of photos taken in Japan from about May 52-Sep 60, however all were lost during shipment in a seperate foot locker which was never received when I returned from the Philippines in 1963. I have a very large website at Http://geocities.com/us2002d/index.html with many photos of various Japan areas, both military and off-base. Most were lifted from sites I visited or the web, or sent to me by friends from the old days. btw, would like to use some of your pics on my site if ok with you. Will put a link to your site on mine to give credit where credit is due. Let me know. Take a look at my site and let me know what you think. Comments pro and con would be appreciated. Gosh, you have done such an outstanding on your site and one of the best I've even seen. Hey, if you are not familiar using html/java script for photo dropdown menus, etc, and care to try them for your site, let me know and I will send you the code. I'm not making a bad comment about the way you show you photos, just something you might be interested in:) Thanks for sharing your photos/info. Keep up the good work. It sure is a small world. The Harman's tie to my paternal
family (the Windes') in Crawford County, Missouri & the Carpenter's tie to my maternal family (the Freeman's) in
McIntosh County, Oklahoma. In fact, Fred & Nellie Carpenter lived next door to some of my people (the Joe Barnwell's)
in Hitchita. Joe was a house builder at Hitchita - lived to be 108 years old. His wife was Emma Freeman Barnwell. They had one daughter,Greta, born in 1908. The senior Freeman's (Lloyd and Josephine) lived at Hitchita from the time they got their Creek allotments in 1903 to 1920. Their homestead was south of town and would be just under the lake now.
Do you have any old Freeman stories? Several of the sons
were 'colorful'. A daughter married Sam Baker, an outlaw
turned gunfighter at Checotah. Would love to hear from you.

Also, thank you for adding the Owada pictures submitted by Hank Hall and myself. Really the right thing to do since the U.S.Air Force did assume command of the site in the early 60's. Your efforts in updating the "Owada Camp" history is and will continue to be very much appreciated by all concerned. If all goes well, my wife and I will be venturing back to Tokyo again next September (2003)...so be prepared for more pictures and better information. Hi, I worked at the Kashiwa transmitter site for 11 years
until the Airforce took over communications in Japan.
I visited Owada several times. The site was noted for the great meals served. Did you know Fred (forgot his last name) a civilian employee?
Very nice WEB site.

I really appreciate the information and pictures that Jim Carpenter and others have gathered on the Harmon side of my family. The photo of Job and Catherine Harmon are my great-great grandparents!!!!!!!!!! The picture of the bridge down on the huzzah creek is where we went swimming a lot when I was a child. We lived up State Road E about three miles from there. My uncle owned a canoe rental there. Old memories. I might be able to give you some info. on the Brown side of the family. Betty Brown

Nothing new, Jim. I just keep plugging away at the old records. I bought the complete index to the 1880 census from the LDS. It lists every name by area, or lists all of the specifit=ed name for the entire US. Let me know if you need any of this.

Jim:
I'm one of those "Army Brats" who attended Narimasu High School (among others) while in Japan.
Lynn Ellis led me to your site where I found photos of two of the "R & R" Hotels that my Dad ran in the early '50s. We lived at the Fuji View and the Nikko Kanko (in that order) between Jan '51 and Nov '52.
Nice site. Great pictures. Thanks for the memories.
