I m seeking information on the line that includes The Rev. Dr. Jonathan Hiester, pastor of German Reformed Churches in Campbelltown, Palmyra, Annville, and at Hill Church north of Cleona for over 50 years in the seocnd half of the 19th century and a bit into the 20th. He is memorialized in the window above the altar in the Campbelltown church and lies buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Annville PA His son Anselm became a professor at Franklin & Marshall College here in Lancaster.
One of my purposes is to see what relationship existed between his family line and the family line that included Normal Hiester, organist/director of music at First Reformed Church, Reading (now First U.C.C. Church).
Do I understand correctly that Jonathan Hiester's father was The Rev. william Hiester, pastor for many years at Tabor Reformed, Lebanon PA, died 1828 at age 57?
If snail mail is better:

Lancaster PA 178603-6311
Thanks for your help:

Hello, I just came across your website regarding the Hiester family tree.
My name is Glenda Lykens, my great-great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Hiester. I have done some research on the Hiester family but wasn't able to really make the link between her and Governor Joseph Hiester.
Mary Elizabeth Hiester (1824-1906) married Isaac Lykens in 1840 and they moved to Blair County ,PA about 1860 ( at least that is the first they are mentioned in the Blair County census.).
She was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Hiester, and according to her obituary, was the niece of Governor Joseph Heister and the granddaughter of Conrad Wiser.
I did not see any mention of a Benjamin in your notes, do you have any idea who his father may have been or where we fit into the family tree?
I would certainly appreciate any help you could give, and enjoyed reading the information on your website.
Thanks so much. Glenda Lykens

I was told by my Grandfather that we are descendents of Gov. Joseph Hiester, but he passed away before I was able to dig deeper with him. I know that his father was Charles Hiester who I think was b. 9/14/1893 d. 2/1966. Based on the information that I have uncovered, I belive that Charles was the grandson of either Henry Melchoir Mulenberg Hiester, b. 1839 OR the grandson of John Sylvanus Hiester b. 1838. If anyone has any info about this branch of the family or suggestions of where to look, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

Bud Hiester had contacted my son and myself a few years ago
according to his records we are in your family line also.
My son and daughter became interested in knowing the family line to pass down to there children. As I have been widowed for seven years not easy to find anything out anymore as my husbands mother refuses to give any information and my husband never stayed in contact with his family very much so very little is known to pass down. I am not very familar with the way to do research so any info you have would be appreciated.
Thanks

First I would like to say THANK YOU for the great information you have given. My grandmother was Elsie Ella Hiester a sister to your grandfather Albert. A few years ago some of the "cousins" got together and met at Blue Marsh, State Game Lands in Bern Township with special permission from the Game Commission to drive to the area where the Hiester farm once stood. We were able to find some of the foundation but there is nothing of any buildings standing. However, there are several trees that are the same that were planted when the children were born -I think they only planted around 5 though. There is a sign there with the name of the trees but not the story that goes with it. There are now hiking trails that go through the property. It was really nice being there to hear the stories of the now elders that were there remember how it was when they were small. Thanks Again!

While my Mom can tell you much more, my grandfather (James D.) was in the circus for several years and eventually ended up working on the D&RG railroad in Denver, CO.
I am certain that my Mom can provide an accurate tracing from James D. Hiestere onward with some information on the generation near my grandfather also, e.g., Vernon lived across the street from my grandparents. I will advise her of your web pages. She should be quite interested.

I am a descendent of Joseph Hiester, not the governor, but the middle brother of the three who immigrated to America. I was fortunate in that I traced my genealogy back in the early 1970s. At that time there were three books in the Reading Library (Pa.) that had to do with the Hiester genealogy. I could not check them out but I could copy pages from the books that enabled me to connect the early ancestors with the recent ancestors. I also was able to get a copy of the Hiester Coat of Arms with it's background which I forwarded to Bud Hiester a couple years ago. I grew up in Berks County but now live north of Dayton, Ohio.

I currently live in Bluffton, Indiana and can trace my ancestors back to the three immigrant brothers as most American Hiester's can. I am currently compiling photos and other interesting information about the Hiester family. I would like to see a comprehensive collection of facts and documents about our family. More than than just anscestoral charts. I am interested in occupations, political lives, military careers, prominant citizens, ties to other families, etc.
Feel free to send me anthing you have on the family.

This info. was handwritten in by someone in my family: 5th generation of Joseph Hiester-children of Isaac Hiester & Mary Spengler-(They had 16 children.) Josiah,John,Maranda, Wilber?(can't make it out too good) and Thomas S.(father of my Grandfather Thomas Martin)Thomas S.was married to Mary Sharman. There were 11 more children not written down. If I have this wrong, please help me to straighten things out.

According to my book"A Geneaology of The Hiester Family" by V.E.C.HILL dated 1903, I am a decendant of Joseph Hiester, son of Johannes & Catherine Hiester. They had 16 children, one of which was Thomas S.married to Mary Sharman. I am the 8th generation. The original spelling of the name Hiester is "Huster", which is pronounced the same. The latter is the German form. The German word "Huster", is the name of a species of lark. The immediate ancestors of the present race of that name in this country, emigrated from Witzenstein in Westphalia, and arrived in America in the Early part of the 18th century. They consisted of three brothers, John,Joseph & Daniel, who took up residence in the first place at Goshenhoppen, then in Phila., now in Montgomery county. Their remote ancestors were of Silesian origin. The 3 brothers united in purchasing between 2 & 3 thousand acres of land in Bern township, now Berks County. Here John and Joseph settled, while Daniel remained at the old homestead.Gen. Joseph Hiester, the only son of John, became Governor of Pennsylvania in 1820.Joseph's cousin, Gen. Daniel Hiester, was the first representitive in Congress under the present constitution, from Berks County.Daniel of Montgomery,John of Chester, and Gabriel of Berks, were the three eldest sons of Daniel.William was fourth and youngest son of Daniel. When the Revolutionary War broke out, they were among the first to enroll
themselves in the list of "Associaters."Joseph, son of John, entered the service as a captain of the the "Flying Camp", and was made a prisoner at the battle of Long Island and confined on board the notorious Jersey Prison Ship,N.J. He was, after his exchange, promoted to the rank of colonel. The popularity of these men, gained by their devotion to country, and the public never forsook them. After the conclusion of peace, they all enjoyed by the suffrage of the people, all shared in the coucils of the State and general government. The origin of the Hiester Family was the Silesian knight, Premiscloros Husterniz, who flourished about 1329,and held the office of Mayor,or Town Captain of the city of Swineford. A.D.1480, the Patrician & Counsellor of Swineford, Adolphus Louis, called 'der Hiester', obtained from the Emperor Frederick, letters patent whereby he and his posterity were authorized to use the coat-of-arms he had inherited from his ancestors. The Hiester family was afterward diffused through Austria,Saxony,Switzerland and other countries bordering on the river Rhine. Several of the members were distinguishd statesmen and ministers of religion and among the Senators of Homburg,Bremen and Ratisbon, where many of the same name were found, who afterward held the highest and most important offices in said cities. "The Hiester Arms, as used in 1637 by Dr. Lawrence Hiester, a distinguished German surgeon of his day, are: Arms: Azure, a sun, or
Crest: Between two horns surmounting a helmet affronte, a sun, as in the Arms."The Hiester Arms, as used by the American branches, an obtained by them from their early ancestors, are: Arms: Azure, a pair of horns proper over a star of eight points, or,Crest: Between two horns surmounting a helmet afronte, the horns and star as in the Arms.

There were three brothers that came over here from Selesia which is now a part of Germany. Joseph,Daniel,& Johann or John Hiester. I am a descendant of, I believe, Daniel's family. I have to check again. I have a book that was made for the Hiester Family. Most of my Hiester relation is from the Bern Township area. My mother's maiden name was Mary Hiester, her father's name was Thomas Martin Hiester. He had a brother Isaac and I think his sister's name was Lizzie. Thomas was born in 1878. Married to Adaline Ryfsnyder. They had three children,Vernon,Myrtle,& Mary.

It has been most interesting to learn more about my Hiester heritage. There are not many in Oklahoma. But my dad, Harrison Peter Hiester, only got back to Pennsylvania one time in my life that I remember. I grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma.
If I can provide any information you don't already have, I would be glad to relay anything helpful.

I'm not sure yet where i am in the Berks County Heisters. There is Heister Valley (Spelled HEIster) in Juniata County, where i am from. A historian told us it was named for Governor Joseph Hiester. My family is mainly from Mifflin County since at least the 1850 U.S. censes. I think I am a decendant of John Hiester ( we think our name was changed to HEIster around 1800). We go back to Samuel Heister b.1816 m. to Serah (Miller?) b. 1812. Samuel Heister is my GGG grandfather for sure, he was a carpenter.
But my problem is i cannot connect Major General John Hiester who m. Catherine June 24, 1786 in Bern Township,Berks County with my GGG grandfather. I'm sure there is at least two generations in there somewhere. So I'm guessing Maj. Gen John Hiester is my GGGGG grandfather. Also I haven't yet found how we got from Berks County to Mifflin County.
Thanks

The Hiester line of my family disappears after my Great-Grandparents Isaac W. Hiester and Maggie C. Ruth. Their daughter Eva Ruth Reinert(Hiester) died when I was quite young and her husband Paul Bender Reinert was incoherant until his death. I have no family to ask for info on the Hiester line, I was hoping you might know someone that could shed some light on it. Isaac, Maggie and there children all lived in Berks County. Any help, or push in the right direction would be appreciated greatly!
