I have noticed that the original Duncanson settlers on Manitoulin Island came from Dunwich Township, Elgin County, Ontario. My family is also from this area. My father, Don Allister Duncanson, was born in Largie and we lived in Dutton when I was born. I am hoping to visit Manitoulin Island in early June 2014 and would be interested in learning more about this branch of the Duncanson famly.

I have been doing research for 22 years, specialize in Indian genealogy and have found the Manitoulin Genealogy website extremely useful! The thoughtful use of your site makes working on my family tree a simple delight. I have close to 7,000 family members in my family tree going back to the late 1700's. The Jesuits who recorded the births, marriages and death have done well to preserve our heritage. I and all my relations thank you. Please donate to the Manitoulin site or give your time to assist in their effort to help all future generations.

Respectfully,

Mag Cywink-Wopperer

Surnames searching for: LUTHER, LEGGE, PARKIN, REID
Comments:
After 20 years of research and writing, I’ve finally finished the detailed history of four European families which came to Canada and inter-married on Manitoulin. The four are the LEGGES of North Yorkshire, the LUTHERS of Pennsylvania, the PARKINS of East Yorkshire, and the REIDS of Scotland. All were among the earliest settlers of Carnarvon and Campbell Townships, and leave many living descendants there today (as well as Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, etc.).
The 80+ biographical chapters of 'Land of Our Own' cover remembrances of each person or couple with newspaper articles, old letters, anecdotes, photos, family trees, and much more. The book starts with ancestors as early as the mid-1700s, and follows each branch forward to the current era.
While the main focus is those families which went to Manitoulin (and subsequently dispersed across North America), other branches which migrated elsewhere are included. No other source is as comprehensive, or as accurate (footnotes are provided), about these kinfolk. This is not a boring mass-produced book of generalities.
This book is only available from me. The cost of shipping is included for orders within North America ($49.50). The book is the size of letter paper, and it has the same heft of any authoritative publication. Orders will be filled for cheques or money orders only. If you desire to know more about what you’re getting, you may email me for a copy of the Table of Contents at this email.

Sincerely,

Tom Parkin

In my late grandmother's address book is the following entry:

Rev and Mrs W F Hensler (Fred)
Box 37
Manitowaning
Ontario
Canada
P OP 1N0

From preliminary researches I think that Fred Hensler may have been descended from James Frederick Hensler, who was born in Sherfield Green near Basingstoke, Hampshire, England in 1865. James married my Great Grandfather's sister, Fanny Hailstone, in 1868.

I'd be very interested to learn more about Fred Hensler and his family and to exchange information with my distant cousins.

Was passing through and noted a posting from 2005 with regard to Frank Mcgrah I am related to the McGraws from Sucker Creek First Nation near Little Current, Ontario.
I tried to send a response to help but my message was undeliverable.

My grandmother was a McGraw and was one of ten children to Tom and Maggie (nee Abotossaway) McGraw of what is now known as Aundeck Omni Kaning ( Sucker Creek First Nation).

I have one uncle, Ernest aka Smitty McGraw who still lives on the reserve.

If these individuals are still checking on this website, hope this information is helpful.

I was wondering if anyone had information on the family that lived in the abandoned house on Lucars Lane in Rockville. I've heard that it is spelled Looker(I've seen the grave in Cold Springs) My father showed me the house, and I have visited it since the late 1980's. Also, I wonder if anyone would have a picture of the house when it was still lived in or in good condition. Sadly, the last few years have seen the house totally fall into a wreck.

Comments:
My great-grandparents came to Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island in the 1870's. Hiram Merrick and Lucretia Burritt were from Merrickwille and Burritts Rapids. He was born in 1829 to Stephen Merrick and Margaret Brown and she was the daughter of Martha Adams and Clement Burritt, both UEL families.
After Stephen Merrick died in 1830, Margaret married James Dunn, and three other children.
Hiram and Lucretia were married in Burritt's Rapids on April 23, 1853 and moved to Grey County. They had 12 children: Ichobad Benedict ( later changed his name to George), Truman Burritt, died as a very small child, Clement Burritt ( also later changed his name to George), Martha Lucretia, married Francis Sides, Thomas Hiram, married Laura McDonald, Hiram, never married, William, married Mary Ann mcCannell. Jeannet married Gilbert MacAlpine, Caroline, married Fred Sheppard, Margaret Ann ( Anna), married Fred Holborn, Ruth Ella, married Thomas Wilson, and Lois Jean, married William Pennell and James Jackson.
Hiram and Lucretia left Gore Bay before the 1891 census and went near Gaylord, Michagan with daughter, Lois and sons, Thomas and Hiram. By the 1901 census, they were living in Stony Plain, Alberta, and Lois, Martha, Hiram, Thomas and Anna were all there as well. I believe Ichobad, now George, was also there. William stayed in Gore Bay, Clement, now also George, lived in Deep River, Jeanett lived in Gore Bay, Thessalon and Blind River, and Ruth was married in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and moved to Wiarton, Barrow Bay, Markdale and finally to Brantford.
I have never been able to find out where and when Lucretia and Hiram died...my last missing link.

the one in Manitoulin Genealogy, birth index "S", would have been appx 25/26 at the time.......... anyone know if she was a painter???........
i don't have camera availible at moment or would attach photo...........i work in large retirement community, sometimes i follow trails just to seewhere they lead, it really is a small world sometimes.........

After scrolling down the page of comments a name is brought to mind of someone we know nothing about. Only that she married someone in my dads family. We have always known her as Peck but could be Beck. She is supposed to be native as well, would love to know more about her. Dads family goes from Alexander born in Scottland to Percy. She might be a family myth, would love to find out one way or the other. So far I have had no luck at all with this. Any info would be appreciated.

I have been doing our family tree and knew my mother's parents lived on Manitoulin Island before she was born in 1922. The stories she told have made we want to see Manitoulin Island for myself. I hope to drive up this year and visit some of the places my 'Nana' would have gone when she lived there in the late 1800's & early 1900s. Thank you for your record-keeping, it has made my research a lot easier.

I have been searching for information concerning Annie Wendjikissina (Weniwish, Ininiwish) d/o John Wendjikissina and Margurite Ininiwish, who lost her mother and father at a young age and as a result was raised by her grandparents, Mr and Mrs Papaqwiss, on Whitefish Lake Reserve (Lake Panache).

Annie married Charle Groulx/Groux(Neegahbo)s/o Arthur and Katherine Groulx (Wakbegonigoyziogoke). I am also seraching for any and all decendants of Herbert Wendjikissina A.K.A. Albert Groulx born Whitefish Lake.s/o Annie Groulx (Wendjikissina, Ininiwish Weniwish). They were Trappers and spent most of their time trapping in the forests of Northern Ontairo. Their last known address was Caperol, Ontario Charle until 1970s' amd Annie until 1986. I have traced the family from Temiscaminque Quebec, to Timiskaming and Nipissing Ontario.

Herbert Wendjikissina AKA Albert Groulx was raised for the first six years by his grandmother Margurite Ininiwish on Whitefish Lake Reserve, (Lake Panche). He spent many years in Gogama where he married Emma Wincikaby. d/o John and Annie Wincikaby, aka Blackbirch (Neveu). He lived in Temagami for many years before moving to Latchford, Ontario.
He finished out his years on Matachewan Reserve in Northern Ontario.

Hi there. Whoever put this site together I'd like to say a huge thank you. It has allowed me to fill in a blank page in family tree. I am wondering however if anyone out there has any additional information on William Reid (born 1864) or Julia Baxter (born 1858). Specifically I am looking for the names of their parents and where they might have been born (or died).

I am a great grand-daughter of them, through their son David Stanley Reid and his wife Margaret Kerr. If anyone wishes more information on Stanleys line, please feel free to contact and I will fill in as many blanks as I can. They had 5 children, all of whom have now passed on except my father (the youngest of their children). I can at the very least name the 5 children, and some of their grand-children.

Thanks again,
Colleen Reid

My father, Allison Turnbull, was born at Tekummah in 1908. He moved out to Saskatchewan with his oldest sister and her husband (Hugh and Ina Little) when he was 9 years old. The Little family returned to the Manitoulin about eight years later but Allison stayed in Saskatchewan where he farmed, married and raised three daughters. Distance and $$$ limited our opportunity to get to know our relatives from "down East", as my dad called it.
I am in search of any information on family members, dates, and events involving "Turnbull's" and "Little's". Thank you any correspondence, stories, obituaries, etc.

Spent every summer vacation in the 50's & 60's at Meldrum Bay cottages that were then owned by Len & Molly (Gertie)Bailey. Up to a few years ago, my mother corresponded with Ivan Trick who used to own the general store in Meldrum Bay. His correspondence ceased, and we surmise that he has passed away. Does anyone have any information on Ivan Trick? I have wonderful memories of Meldrum Bay.

Am continuing research into the family of Christopher Montgomery who was married to Barbara Ann Patton. Barbara died at Ice Lake on 14 Dec. 1898 the day following the birth of their sixth son, Robert Christopher, who was my father. Barbara's father was Neil Patton who probably died on the Bruce Peninsula before his widow, Mary McLean, moved onto Manitoulin. Mary also had two sons: Charles and Donald as well as a second daughter, Elizabeth.

Thank you for the wonderful tribute to my Mother, Peggy Moggy. Geneaology was her greatest pleasure, and even during her illness, she would announce with excitement to us all when she found one more name to add to our tree, or confirmed one more detail of our ancestry. She would be honoured (and of course embarrassed) by your tribute to her. On behalf of the Moggy Family, I thank you for your kindness.

Hi,
I found my great Uncle's birth, it was recorded as Barry, should be Burry. His father George was a minister on Little Current. George and Alfreda were born in Bonavista Bay area of Newfoundland, this was George's first posting as a minister. My Uncle Rex, told me his father used to keep a list of those who partook in spirits, those who were suspected in partaking in indulging in spirits and those who obstain.
Thank you for recording the information on your website.

A general inquiry. I sailed into Smith Bay and expected to find a Gov't warf where I thought I might be able to tie up for the night, if not then anchor in the lee of a prevailing south wind for the night. What I found was a harbour Marina that was, until recently, very well equipped. There is a grand building along with all ammenity facilities one might expect to find in a modern marina facility. The surprise came when it was obvious that the facility had been abandoned, the supplies of fuel, etc. depleted and the dock 'fingers' sold. My querie is, what happened to this marina? The local children report that the hydro has been cut off and everyone is on welfare assistance. Yet there is much local motoring traffic moving about in obviously newer well kept vehicles? The whole situation gave me the 'creeps' as I would have been more than happy to tie up to the warf as was shown on a recently purchased chart of the area. Just a thought that has stayed with me since and happened to find this opportunity to 'put it out there'.

Hi! I have recently subscribed to the Rootsweb Manitoulin mailing list. When checking out the Mangenealogy through a search engine, I see that it is suspended.

My ggrandparents were Mutchmor's, and my gggrandparents were McKechnie's. My great grandfather, John Mutchmore, lived the latter part of his life with his daughter, my grandmother, in New Westminster, BC, and is buried there. I am originally from New Westminster. His wife, Christine McKechnie, is also buried there, as is her sister, Annie McKechnie. But Grandma always talked about Gore Bay, Providence Bay and the Island as where she grew up. I am just starting on this branch of the family tree.

It sounds like a lively mailing list. I hope to have something to contribute before too much longer.

I too am researching the Corbiere family tree on Manitoulin Island. As far as I know, there are two other ladies researching this line, Sandy Bayer and Jeanne Ross. Sandy descends from George Corbiere (DOB: Approx. 1898) and Jeanne descends from Henry Corbiere (DOB: August 27, 1877). My husband descends from their sister, Elisabeth Corbiere (DOB: May 6, 1884). The following is a list of their brothers and sisters, as well as their parents and great-grandparents. We would all very much like to get in touch with anyone else who may be researching the same Corbiere family.

Our ancestors Elisabeth, George, and Henry, all descend from the Louis Corbiere & Esther Fournie family line. Louis and Esther were my husband's great-grandparents. I have been researching this family line for about 10 years now and have been able to locate the following information on the children of Louis Corbiere and Esther Fournier. Their daughter, Elisabeth Corbiere, married Henry Carty. These are my husband's grandparents.) I am also including the generation before Louis Corbiere and Esther Fournier as this lists their parents, Henri Corbiere & Marie Roy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
***Descendants of Henri Corbiere & Marie Roy***
These are some additional names I have come across in baptismal certificates, however, the names of the parents differ slightly, i.e. mother's first name varies as follows: Marie, Marianne, Mary Ann....and the last name on some is Leroy instead of Roy. More research will have to be done in case this is just an error on the part of the original writer.
We all look forward to hearing from anyone else who may be researching any of the above or their descendants. I do have some additional generations, but have not included them as some are still living.
I look forward to hearing from anyone with any family connections at all. Our family knows nothing about the Corbiere families on Manitoulin Island. My mother-in-law was born in Gore Bay in 1920 and their family moved from the Island in approx. 1922 when she was 2 years old. Something drastic happened that made it necessary for their mother, Elisabeth, to move the family to Meaford, Ontario. Her children married and my husband's parents moved to the Yukon in the mid 1950s...and here we are. I would dearly love to hear from more people who are researching the Corbiere family as it is extremely tough trying to track down information from here.
Bye for now.
My grandmother Mabel Blackstock McLean was born at Gore Bay & I've been searching Manitoulin records for years. Still need more on the Barrie Island McLeans--especially Hector McLean married to Christine/Christina McFadyen & other children. They were from Grey County, but have discovered on this site that Christina McLean is buried at Gordon Cemetery. Wonder what ever happened to Hector & children.
Great site! Has been very helpful. We have a great many old photos which we are repairing that we are assuming are members of the Taylor and/or Roszel families since my grandfather was George Percy Taylor and my grandmother was Olga Spray Roszel. These photos were taken around the Island and a couple appear to be a July 12th parade. Anybody wishing to see them should e-mail me and I would be glad to send jpeg copies of them. Maybe someone can help us identify the people in them. Again, great site!
My husband's greatgrandparents James Sims and Rosalie along with their children George F. Sims, Rosalie, and James are listed in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census. They came to Michigan in 1881 from Canada. I think they were from Ontario but am not positive and do not know what route they may have taken to get here. James and Rosalie also had additional children, but I don't know their names. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks to someone nice enough to refer me to your lovely web page, I have located my gt grandparents, George Herbert McDougall. He was killed in the CPR train wreck 1910 at age 24. I found a corner of a photograph in my gt grandmother's bible with enough info on it to lead me -with the help of others- to locate their burial place. I recall when my grandad went up from Windsor, Ontario to Sudbury when his mother Janet McDougall died. I want to find her maiden name. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks for this information...now I'll have to visit Providence Bay. Which reminds me, in the bible there is also a bookmark, leather, from Providence Bay... Marilyn
I'm descended from John McMurchy Fraser, onetime mayor of Gore Bay and mill operator. His parents Simon Fraser & Flora McQuarrie, and siblings include James Munroe Fraser and Simon McQuarrie Fraser. John was born 1860 near Toronto (Vaughan, Kleinberg) and died 1909 Gore Bay. His daughter Mary Gertrude Fraser was my grandmother. I'd love to hear from anyone with an interest in the early days of Gore Bay and especially any connection with the Frasers, McQuarries or Thorburns.
Just found your site which has a lot of good data. I wish to contact the Little Current Museum regarding a Dr. Jack Carruthers who apparently has some medical artifacts in the Museum. He died in 1949 and I would like to find out more about him and his family. I see from your data that there is a Little Current-Howland Centennial Museum. Would this be the place that I should contact? I would like to hear from anyone that knows of this family. I have not been able to find a record of his death in Little Current as yet, but I believe he is buried there.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this site. I was able to copy & paste information on the Stringer's for my files. The Stringer's on the Island might be related and I have to do some further checking. Two Stringer brothers, Aaron & Robert, came to Canada and settled in Crowland Township, crossing at Fort Erie, from Pennsylvania in 1786. They were of German origin, although the Ontario 1871 Census shows Stringer's as of English origin as well. Aaron Stringers family settled in Pelham Township, while some of Roberts went to Norfolk Township, and then into Michigan. It's possible some of them ended up on the Island. If anyone can add any information, it would certainly be appreciated. Again, thanks, and I will be reviewing this site again. John Milton Douglas Stringer
I don't know to what point Kerry Nelder has gone to provide B,M,D, but I have most of the ones pertaining to my families from Ontario Vital Statistics. This is mostly in Campbell and Carnarvon Twps. I'm sure the ones for Manitoulin alone number in the hundreds. I enjoy your site and think its great you are putting in this effort. I am willing to pass them on for publication. You must have a lot more as very few of my family are showing up. Let me know how I may help. Richard. P.S. I have been in contact with Kerry and he helped me find a mutual ancestor.
