What a wonderful surprise to discover these pages and pages of valuable history. As the writer of Dakota Datebook, which airs on North Dakota Public Radio, you can bet many of these stories will be sent out on the radio waves in the future. Thanks so much to the family for sharing these stories with us.

Thank you so much for putting all this history on the internet for everyone to enjoy. I'm searching for information on my great-great uncle Eugene Little Soldier. He fought against Reno at Battle of Little Big Horn at age 13. He was a Standing Rock Policeman and was present at the arrest and killing of Sitting Bull. He died at age 75 on March 13, 1938. Any information anyone could provide me with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ann

Many years ago when I was a child, I remember seeing my Great Grandfather's photo in an old volume of the "Winners of the West" and have an old newpaper clipping about his time as a soldier during the Indian Wars. I also have his medals and have heard that he was the Arkansas State Commander of the Veterans of the Indian Wars. I found your site so helpful with understanding the times in which he lived. I'd love to be able to thumb through some of the old issues of "The Winners of the West". Could someone let me know where I might find them? Thanks for such an interesting site.

I have read chapter II of the Fort Yates history by Frank Fiske in the Sioux County Pioneer(July 12, 1917 Vol 3, No 42) and am exceedingly anxious to obtain the succeeding chapters III, etc., since I am engaged in writing a history of Capt. Charles De Rudio, who served at Ft. Yates in Oct. 1886-. Could you help me in any way to obtain a transcript of chapter III, and chapters up to 1888? Many thanks for your work in publishing the old material.

I am very excited to have found this. I am a descendent of Joseph Menz and his wife Rebecca (Cornelius). My grandfather Joseph Menz was half German and half Standing Rock Sioux. Rebecca was Oneida. They met at Hampton Institute in Virginia and were married in 1906 in Fort Yates. They made their home there until the 1950's when Rebecca died. Joseph stayed on for another 10 years or so. He enrolled the family as Standing Rock Sioux although technically the children had more Oneida blood. Joseph Menz was distinguished in public service. He served in many public offices, was a judge, clerk of court, president of school board. In later years, he served 4 terms as a legislator in the ND State Legislature for Sioux County. He was self-taught; an extremely intelligent man who had never gone beyond 8th grade. He died at the age of 88 in 1970. Rebecca was not without distinction herself; she was an accomplished seamstress and made every stitch of clothes her family wore. She was also a talented homemaker. I am very proud of my family and heritage as you can see and I look forward to reading the newspapers of the old days.

A very special site.
I have been doing a lot of work with ancestors from the healing point of view.
My heart jumped this evening with I found my Grandfather on your site. His name was Oscar Kausche. He appears in an article by Charles Potswald from 1937 -the year I was born.
Oscar was a First Sarg in I Troop 8th US Cav. Ft Meade.
I hope I can find out more about him. If anyone has any information I would sure appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you-Ross

This is history that I was never taught and I found it interesting how those that came over here felt about what they experienced. But I would also really love to hear about how those who were here felt about their lives before and after those from other lands came and built their settlements. I'd like to hear about what they experienced and how their families felt about all that was happening to them.
