Estella Marie is my grandfather's Aunt (So I think that makes her my gr-gr-aunt?). His father was Daniel William Yancy aka Bud, Estella's younger brother. I never had the opportunity to meet much of my grandfathers family from MO. I first encountered the info while googling my last name and came across the work of Dennis Yancey, who had a link for Yancey's of African American Descent. The photo that popped up of Daniel J. Yancey (and family) looked SO much like my grandfather, I didn't even have to read it to know he was related. Thanks for doing what you've done! It's been amazing learning about my family's history. Looking foward to discovering more.

Greetings, My brother and I ran across your site while looking up historical items about Coffeyville, Kansas on Google. We both were surprised when we saw our great-grandfather's name, Reuben H. Brown on one of the search results.
Our mother's father was Charles H. Brown, one of Reuben's sons. Our mother is still living (86 years old), and she remembers many of the family members posted on the site. It was amazing to see so many old photos of our family members. Thank you for posting them. Our oldest brother has 2 photos of Reuben. One is Reuben and his wife, and the other I think is a family photo with their children. I've seen Reuben's grave many times, and there's other members of the Brown family buried nearby.
Thanks!

I am planning a trip through the area in Sept. and was hoping to locate that area as nearly as possible and drive through the area where they lived to get a feel for the nature of the area. They only lived in the area for a little while and moved back to McDonald county in the 1930s. Would appreciate any help in narrowing down this location. I am so appreciative of the "Dear Martha letters" I am researching background info for a study I am preparing for Sgt James Harvey Hooper, one of the Cahaba/Sultana victims. He was from Blount/Sevier Co., TN, served in 3rd TN Cav. Co. D. His widow and orphan received a federal pension after the war until the widow remarried to James Wiley Hodges, a survivor who had been in exactly the same company as HM Misemer and the Bogarts. The letters from their fellow soldiers provide much additional insight into the wartime locations and captivity of these two east Tennesseans. Thank you so much for the time and effort expent in posting these publicly.

She was born in Paris Springs, Lawr. Co. Mo. and attended school there with the Johnsons and Miesmers. I heard her speak of them many times and I have some Paris Springs School photos if you would be interested in seeing them. I traced her Browns through Dewitt Co. William and Evaline married there Mar.1850& on census for 1850. Have not been able to connect to any of the Airy?Browns of Greenbriar Co. W. Va, Only possibly the Frederick W. Who is doing the fabulous work of cleaning and photographing the stones in Misemer Cemetery? I was there in Sept 2001 and the 2 Nickel stones and the Robert W Kimmons stone were so covered with lichen that they are not legible. I was absolutely thrilled to find that the stones hand been cleaned and were posted on the website. Kudos to whoever is doing such fine work!!!

Great site, I loved the pictures. Only one suggestion. The creek in your july 3rd 2002 road trip isn't named goose creek. Goose creek connects with Turnback creek about a quarter mile south of Britains Mill. The creek just to the west of Halltown you called goose creek with a ? mark is actually Billies creek(I'm one of the locals). It is named for a elderly gentleman(whose family has owned the same land probably since Halltown was founded)His name is Billie Morris. The creek in mention starts on his land. He is close to 100 if he hasn't passed on by now. As far as the name of the creek being named after him is folklore as far as i know.

I descend from many who lived in Jasper Co., MO before 1900. I was able to fine the 200 acre Lattin farm in the (Meneral TWP) plat book. Dimmick Lattin bought the first 40 acres in 1854 and indications are his son George sold it to the Sidensticker family in 1869. My great grandfather, Samuel Bumpus, entered the Sarcoxie Hospital in Dec of 1861 while a Union soldier. I noticed that hospital is not listed as one used by the Union Army during the Civil War.

Hi Judy - Thanks for your email. I tried to respond with just a 'reply' but kept getting the mail returned. Just as a matter of interest did you know that IGI has an entry for a Brown/Thompson marriage in Gasconade Co on 21st April 1853 but it lists the Groom as Solen Brown. The entry shows the bride as Syrena Thompson. There are quite a few Solen or Solon Browns on IGI (although no birth for one in MO in 1830 as far as I could find) so could your John Brown have actually been born maybe Solen John Brown? Another genealogical mystery?

I note with interest your findings that your John Brown purchased land originally owned by a William Steen and also a connection with surname Thomson/Thompson. My great great grandfather, William Steen and his family settled in Douglas Prairie Missouri after leaving Tennessee. They were mostly farmers. One of his sons, my great grandfather, William Francis Marion Steen, unlike his farmer relations, caught gold fever and eventually ended up here in Australia. However, another of William's sons, Frederick Carlisle Steen married a Martha Jane Thompson (daughter of William and Delilah Thompson)in Gasconade County on 22nd Feb 1859. I wonder if there is a link there somewhere? Maybe Martha had a sister Cyrena but I can't pinpoint anything yet.

Name: Beverly Clark <rclark5@elp.rr.com> Date: 2002-08-26 How did you find this site? by way of MODADE mailing list Genealogists, what surnames are you researching? In Dade County, Missouri: Hail, Dalton, Murdock, England, Grantham, Clark on my Dads side; Long, Young, Hurlbut, McClure, McLemo Comments:
As you can see, I have quite a few ancestors in Dade County, Missouri. My parents were born and raised there. I really liked the pictures of Greenfield that you recently added to your site. One thing that has bothered me about the Dade County web site is that they do not have enough pictures, up-to-date and historical, of Greenfield and Dade County, complete with informative captions. Another thing that would be very helpful on the site would be a current map of Greenfield and a current map of Dade County with landmarks indicated. This would be very helpful for researchers from out of town who are planning a trip to Dade County. Locations in Greenfield such as the library, courthouse, cemetery, schools, resturants, motel, hospital, etc., and in Dade County: townships, towns, churchs, cemeteries, schools, mills, historical landmarks, camp areas, convenience stores, lake, etc. Of course, this would also include details on roads. In fact, a map that includes directions from Springfield, Mo. would probably be very appreciated by most out of town researchers. A co-operative venture between Dade and Greene County, and maybe even Barton County could be very helpful. If I lived in that area I would see of I could come up with something like this for the site, but unfortunately I live in El Paso, Texas and only get back home (about 90 miles from Greenfield) about once a year. I don't know where you are from, but I do appreciate your efforts and wish that others would see the need also. Your thoughts?

I have located the Lattin farm thanks to you. Dimmick Lattin died in 1872 and son George continued there on 200 acres on the river. Great great grandmother, Catherine Lattin drowned in a flood in the 1870's after son George James and Clara Amanda were born to her and Samuel Bumpus. George in 1870 and Clara unk. In trying to determin Clara.s death date, I must ask: In the HISTORY OF JASPER CO, under REMARKABLE FLOODS,there is listed 3 floods, first was 1844, second was 1872 and third was 1865. Could 1865 be a misprint? I also wonder if there is a list of victims.
Thank you so much for the treasures I am finding on your site.

My brother and I are searching for information about our great uncle J. Arthur Halstead who was an engineer for Frisco Railroad. He died in 1959 at Thayer, MO. We are looking for photographs and records of him, his engines/his work. We believe he retired in 1957. We recently found his headstone that has an engine on it with the number 4710 on it. He also had a diesel engine that was maroon and gold. If you have any information on this. Please contact me. Thanks. It's a shame that all of those records were destroyed. We family members would so love to have access to them.
