she was my 4th great grandmother. i had heard that her and sherwood were 100% cherokee. that eventually her and my 3rd great grandmother ended up on the trail of tears where later sarah died and my 3rd great grandmother was raised by the haney family which eventually she married into. also tht sarah's father was an indian named ingua meaning (something strange in the sky) thus became the surname strange. if you could write (and send any pictures of these family members) it would greatly be appreciated. thank you. barbara brackett

My great grandmother, Sarah Jane married William Thomas "Tommy" Jenkins. My grandmother Nancy Palestine "Pallie" Jenkin's delayed birth certificate listed her mother's maiden name as Sarah Jane Raby, born in Swain County, N.C. There are several Jenkins Pages on the web but they list Sarah Jane's last name as Campbell. I recently talked to a relative and she only knows that Sarah Jane had a sister named Lou, that went by the name Campbell.

What I know about Peter Raby is from an undocumented family tree on a FamilyTreeMaker CD-Rom. I list him in my tree, but am not sure that he really existed. He is listed as Peter Raby, I -- and there is a Peter Raby, II, who does seem to have actually listed. Peter Raby, II is listed as having been born in Burke County, North Carolina in about 1805,and may have died in Cass (now Bartow) County, Georgia before 1850. He was married to a Sarah A. Hubbard (1809-after 1880) and she, too, seems to have been real. They had nine children, including my great-great-grandfather, Peter Jefferson Raby (1830-after 1883). Peter Jefferson Raby is listed as being born in Rollen Pen, Georgia, a place no one has located. Peter Jefferson and Jane (Reed) Raby's second son was Meredith Jefferson Raby (1851-1923), my great-grandfather. With Meredith, I feel I am on solid ground -- he and his wife Emily (Herndon) raised my Dad, so I knew someone who knew them. This line of Rabys seem to have moved from Georgia to Missouri before the 1860 cenus for St. Francois County, Missouri. Meredith and his family eventually settled in the area of Willow Springs, Howell County, Missouri

Hello, I am from England and read your site with interest.
I am ashamed to say I do not know my grand-parents names. My father, Norman, was born in 1916 and I am the youngest of 6 kids. I was born in 1956.
I have done minimal research on the origins of the Raby name which may interest you.
The name is of Old Norse(ON) origin and is still used in Scandinavia. It splits into two, 'RA' means (in ON) a farm or important landmark. 'BY' is ON for boundary so RABY means 'the farm on/near the boundary' There are number of places called Raby in England, and of course Raby Castle. The Barons of Raby were once a powerful force in England, however, they chose the wrong side in a little argument (Elizabeth I v Mary of Scots) and were forced to flee to Wales where they "merged" with the Nevilles. The lands were claimed by the crown and remained so until the 3rd Earl of Stafford was made Baron of Raby for his services as ambassador to the Court of the King of Prussia.
I have a little more info on the name of Raby if you are interested. It is not all that common in England, I would think that any Scottish/Irish connections would have originally come from the North of England because of the Nordic origin.
