Hi I am the wife of Mark Clulow who signed the guestbook in the past and mother of Kris Clulow on here who emigrated to USA in 2003. I have also only got back to Joshua Clulow, as recently mentioned on here. I can't get back further than him either. Also, because of illegitimacy, I have discovered the family would be continuing a different surname. A Sarah Ann Clulow had a son called Enoch Clulow, and later she married a Robert Sharp. Obviously he wasn't her son's father as he remained a Clulow. I am doing hubby's tree as I have more patience than him. Ha ha.

I have now managed to research my daughter-in-law's line back to Joshua CLURO (NB his grandson William b. 1836 changed his surname to CLULOW 1851-1861.) I would love to hear from anyone who has progressed further back than Joshua or who can tell me where he was b. c1744. He married Mary NABB in Plumtree in 1786 and they baptised 6 children there during the next 10 years. Their son Thomas 1793-1870 was the father of William above who was born Willoughby on the Wolds. Please contact me if you are interested in this line. Jennifer

Greetings,
I signed the Guestbook several years ago and now have a different e-mail, with a "G" added, changing it from SarahS to SarahGS@zoominternet.net. I don't know how to make the correction on my old post so am adding the new one here. I teach cello to young people and play therapeutic harp at two Cleveland Clinic Hospitals. My father, Edward Donald Clulow's parents were from Northern Ireland, with roots in Staffordshire and Cheshire. I look forward to the day, not too far from now, when I can retire and do more investigative work on the roots of the Clulow side of our family. I do know they used to spell their name with a Cleulow or something like that. Blessings to you all, Sarah

I stumbled across this rather by accident. I was looking for any information on the web relating to a bookshop I used to work for, Clulows in Derby. I remember it being run by a number of members of a Clulow family, at least one of whom I recall lived in Duffield, Derbyshire.
I worked there in, I'm guessing a bit here, 1995 / 1996...I did a school work placement there and then got a Saturday job doing a bit of cleaning, shelving etc. Absolutely loved it. I would just like to know what the family's doing now.

It's amazing how many Clulows seem to be out there, considering whenever I look in phone books around the world none or almost none are listed. When I lived in Los Angeles 15 years ago, there were none at all listed.

I've already been mentioned in the guestbook by my cousin Maggie Peters (back in 2006) and there's at least one comment posted by a possible relative (Sam Clulow who said his branch were from Bessbrook in Ireland).

I only saw one entry from a Spanish speaker - Valentina Clulow - but have done my bit to add to the Latino side of the Clulow clan; I'm married to a Peruvian and my son Josť has dual nationality (British - Peruvian). Right now we live in Switzerland.

Speaking of Latin American Clulow's, one Carlos Clulow from Uruguay is (or was until not long ago) an ambassador for his country as was an earlier namesake (presumably his father) who played a controversial part in diplomatic manouevres around the Cuban Missile Crisis!

Best wishes to all.

This is a real long shot. On and off for a couple of years now I've been trying to track down the origins of the Rev. Thomas Clulow. I am not a Clulow, as you can see, but I am doing some research into early education in the small and fascinating eastern Leicestershire village where I now live in the old Victorian elementary school.
On the church floor (in the chancel) the following is inscribed:
"Underneath this stone lies interred the body of the Rev. THOMAS CLULOW, who was a native of STAFFORDSHIRE, where he received a classical education; but, after some embarrassment [!!!!! - my exclamation marks], he was conducted to this place [i.e. Tilton-on-the-Hill]; where he was CURATE and schoolmaster four years. He departed this life the twenty-fourth day of January, one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven (that's 1797), AGED 32 YEARS."

Does any of you Clulows know ANYTHING about this person and his seemingly tragic life? Does he link up with ANY of your family trees? I've tried Genes ReUnited, but to no avail. Tilton didn't have a school in the 1790s, so his schoolmastering was presumably informal and/or religious, but it was all part of the village's educational history and therefore needs to be researched. Please do get in touch with me if you have any ideas at all. Thank you.

I signed the guestbook back in 2001 and have a different e-mail address now. In regards to the meaning of our name, Clulow, I have found a variety of things, everything from a "low" being a burial area in ancient England to Clu standing for a crossroads. Today I found on the web, a site: www.surnamedb.com/surname.aspx?name=Clulow
the following information. The name may have come from an Old English word meaning "clover" and a 12th century word meaning "burdock". The most interesting find however is a description I read in A Dictionary of Alchemical Imagery by Lyndy Abraham, under the word Labyrinth. Fascinating reading if you are interested.

My name Cluelow may have been misspelled when my great grand parents arrived in Philadelphia Pa. They came from the Armaugh area of Ireland and were poor and illiterate, listed as such in the 1880 census. Does anyone have any information on Cluelow, Clewlow, Clulo, Cluelow in Armaugh. There names were John and Eliza and they left around 1863 to 1865 for the USA with sons Robert John, James William and daughter Margeret. They may have been sponsored by John Crozer in the USA to work at his cotton mill in Upland, Pennsylvania.

Hi Uncle Harry and Auntie Vi

Although we have not yet met I feel I know you well.

Sadly My Uncle Dennis Clulow died in 2002 and his daughter Susan Died in 2004, - two more lost.

I used to have 14 cl;ose relatives and now at the grand age of 58 I only have 4 left!1.

Sad innit???

I do hope you are both well and Diane and I wish you happy christmas.

Maybe 2005 will be the year we meet.

Kind Regards

I'm trying to find my grandmother a Jane Clulow born 1864 in Spitalfields daughter of Richard Clulow deceased at time of her marriage in 1885 to Alfred Josiah Hemingway ( I have Marriage Cert). I have been unable to find and other references to Jane or her father in 1837online.com or elsewhere. I hope that one of you Clulow experts can help.

I was messing around with Photoshop last night. I used one of your photos (your wedding photo) from your site. I was hoping it was alright with you. Please let me know as I would like to use it as an example of my abilities.

P.S. Please let me know if you would like a copy.

It was fun to use your photo as it had decayed quite a lot and I figured it may be a challenge to restore it.

Thanks.

My great-grandfather was Thomas Clulow, brother of the George Clulow who married Elizabeth(Lizzie)Lissaman. He married her sister Rosina and had three sons... so it goes on.

Some of my ancestors were LISSAMAN's from Wolston, Ryton-on-Dunsmore and elsewhere in Warwickshire. In the 1800's a lot of them were carpenters, joiners or involved in the building trade. So I feel that Joseph LISSAMAN born c1856 may link in as he was a plasterer - the 1861 census would reveal his parents.
The oral history handed down in the LISSAMAN family was that two brothers came to England from Eastern Europe. They may have been Jews. One settled in Birmingham and one in Coventry - these are the two places where most can now be found. The 1881 census for the Uk has only 209 LISSAMANs including, variants, and the 1901 has a similar number. LISSAMAN is not an English name. It looks like if the story is true then they came to England before 1700.

Happy hunting - Mark

Hello,
Enjoyed your website. I stopped by looking for information on a Esther Clulow who married William Wakeman at Brierly Hill in 1840. William was born in 1813 at Hockley Hall, Birmingham or maybe at Droitwich. Esther died in 1848 in Racine, Wisconsin. I didn't find any reference to her but found others from Brierly Hill.

Hi There,

I am the grandson of one 'Leslie Clulow' who lived in Rothwell - nr Kettering. He was a publican and ran The Chequered Flag at Loddington (Northants). Unfortunately I cannot claim to be a Clulow as such as Leslie was my fathers step father. He signed papers to adopt my father and his two brothers after my dad's real dad had died (ne Parsons). However, since Leslie's death, we haven't changed our name back to Parsons.
Leslie was a keen jazz drummer who caught T.B due to the cigarette smoke in the clubs where he played. Due to this he lost a lung! He died in 1991, though his wife Dora (my nan), is still alive. I hope this is of interest and if you'd like more inormation I'm sure it could be arranged. By the way, I sing in the cathedral choir at Wells (age 34).

Best wishes

Simon Clulow (Parsons really!)

What a great site. You must have spent hours putting al this together. One of those things I keep meaning to do!
My part of the family originates from Derby. My gGrandfather was federick (from either Preston or Sheffield) he married Annie Potter from Derby and was a Schoolmaster. My Grandfather Maurice Robert (b23.12.1900) married Ethel Rogers and lived in the Derby/north Leicestershire area. I was told the old Cathedral Bookshop in Derby was once owned by a great aunt of mine (it was called Clulow's Bookshop).

Hi,
I am lead to believe that Samuel Clewlow(1835) married Mary Ann Lawton in 1856 and that Charles Clewlow remarried in 1870 to Harriet Jarvis (nee Draper)--- he gave the name of his father as John.
I also have some information about the Emma and Mercy and another of the daughters of Charles if you are interested.

My wifes maiden name is Rowan (on some documents Rowen) and
her grandmothers name was Mary Ellen Clulow born 12/9/1876 and married James Rowen 16/10/1892. Mary Ellen was the daughter of John Clulow born 1851 and Ann Clulow nee Masser.
I think John either had a brother or son called William who
married Annie (maiden name not known) but they had a daughter called Annie Elizabeth born 1891 died 26/10/1909.
Can't find anything yet on your site but this may help some one else. Thanks. PS Clulow spelt Cluelow on some documents.

Original Entry Date: 4-16-2001 Message: My brother Robin was visiting me this weekend from Bordon in Hampshire. He is the Robin Steve met in the Army. He is now retired from the army but still lectures. We were born in Leicester around the 1950's. Our father was Geoffrey. He had 3 brothers and a sister. Our mother was Phyllis Mary Clulow (formerly Astell). Now aged 87 she still lives in Leicestershire. I now live in west Wales and have a website design business. I have one daughter Katie. I started a Clulow website a few years back, but pressure of work meant I couldn't maintain it. I'm delighted to see this site flourishing! Best of luck for the future.

Original Entry Date: 3-3-2001 Message: Hi folks, Nice web site! Its good to see that there are a lot of us out there! My father's name was Bryn Clulow of Leicester, with a brother Tony in Australia. The only other member of the family that I've ever come across is Robin Clulow, who was a WOII in the REME when I was serving in the army as a Sergeant. I also have an older brother, Mick, who is a Bank manager for Lloyds TSB in Leicester (well, someone has to do the job!). As part of my studies at Uni I came across a software company that has some pretty good stuff for finding anyone in the UK, and you may be happy to know that acording to the last government returns there are in excess of 473 of us registered as voters within the uk! Cheers, Steve

Original Entry Date: 2-1-2001 Message: fantastic website. Id been trying to find info on Clulow Cross for quite a while. Im just beginning to trace my family tree. Been in touch with a Sheila Clewlow of Canada who thinks were related and has got the tree back to the 1700`s. Just needs confirming that im part of it. Damned hard though. If its correct then in the mid 1800`s one of my ancestors changed the spelling of his name from Clulow to Clewlow. So, theres a chance were related to!! Incidentally, are you aware of the long since lost village of Cluelow, Clulow or Clewlow, once of Cheshire? Regards, Stu.
