Earliest known ancestor William Herns/Hearns/Harns
Comments:
Go to <www.familysearch.org>, click Search Records tab in upper left - on drop-down menu, click Record Search Pilot.
Type in ancestor's name to search all the collections or choose a region to see collections for that area. I did this and accessed vital records for those Herns/Hearns/Harns/Hurns families who went to Michigan.
More than several "Hearns" of Ontario were using Hurns. My family line (Jane Herns Boice, d/o Thomas & Martha Cronk Herns) uses H-E, while Ebenezer began to use H-U in Kent Co. Ontario as early as 1861. Thomas and Catherine Anderson H.'s son Ruben used H-Y at marriage and in Michigan - although some of his. chi. records go back to H-E-A. Some of these records are "transcribed" and place names be wrong (i.e., a transcriber used Huron as a place name instead of Harwich. Early Canada records are really difficult to read sometimes as many of you may know from your own research efforts!

Earliest known ancestor William Herns
Comments:
Recently discovered that two of Darius and Dorothy Hearns sons went to the United States. If you are from either of these lines, please contact me or leave a message. Please note that the surname Hearns was often spelled Herns, Hurns, or Harns etc.

The children of Darius and Dorothy who moved to the United States and have descendants there are:

William J. Hearns and his wife Charity with their daughter Anna Ida moved to the area of Milwaukee, Wisconson. Anna Ida Hearns married William H. Genske.
Anna and William Genske had two sons, Roger William Genske and Cecil Alva Genske. Roger William Genske married Emma Elizabeth Barth. Roger William Genske died in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida in 1988. Cecil Genske married Margaret Sandberg. Cecil died 02 Sep 1990 in Sun City, Maricopa, Arizona. If you are a descendent of this line of the Hearns family, please email me or leave a message.

The second son of Darius and Dorothy Hearns who moved to the U.S. was Henry Herns and his wife Emily Turney. They moved to the area of Midland Michigan. Henry Herns died on 21 Oct 1880 in Midland Michigan. He and Emily had three children. They were:
1. Murray Montgomery Hearns who married Anna L. Spencer. This couple had a daughter, Marion Hearns. Murray Montgomery Hearns died 24 Jan 1928 and is buried in the Warren Township Cemetery in Colemand, Michigan.
2.Musetta or Muzetta "Beatrice" Hearns who married William Harcourt. They had three children, Eva B. Harcourt, Louis D. Harcourt and Mary J. Harcourt. Muzetta "Beatrice" died on 13 Apr 1965 in Genesee County, Michigan.
3. Lewis Henry Hearns who married Hazel Martha Aldrich. They had four children, Martha Grace Hearns, Harold Lewis Hearns, Clara Mae Hearns, and Ruth Elizabeth Hearns. Lewis Henry Hearns died in 1952 in Midland, Michigan.

Emily Hearns may have remarried twice, second husband John Cheerful Churcher and third husband Nelson H. Chapman. Emily died 24 Jul 1914 in Midland, Michigan.

If you are a descendant from any of the above lines, again please contact me.

Also, if you live in Canada and are a descendant of John Peters of Cramahe. Perhaps you know of the line of Mary Hearnes who married John Peters in Cramahe Twp., Northumberland County in 1848. It appears that John Peters died young and his wife remarried first to a Coan and second to George Hawkins of Haldimand Twp. If you know of this line, please contact me.
Thanks for your help.

My father is James Thomas Hearn Jr. He has 6 brothers and sisters in Kentucky and other states. I do know that their was a history done for his father. They traced the line back to 17th century english merchants. Unfortanly, I do not have access to it. Any questions/comments, please email to above.

Your web page is very interesting. It seems that our Thomas Hearns should fit into your family, but I can not be sure.
Thomas married Lorena (1830-1895) and they had 13 or 14 children. The first time I can find them, they are in Middlesex county. The children move on to Oxford, Essex, Kent counties and Michigan, USA.
I would like to hear from you if there is some possibilty that there is a relationship between our families.
Thank you, M LaBenne

Earliest known ancestor Consider Yarnes
Comments:
I hope you don't mind an unsolicited email regarding a genealogical question. I'm doing some research on an ancestor of mine but I have hit a brick wall.

His name was Consider Yarnes and he came from Dutchess County New York - he was born about 1773. I seem to have not been able to locate any Yarnes relatives prior to him until recently I found some Revolutionary militia records for both a Reuben and Nathan Yarnes (see below)

Could one of these (or both) be related to Consider? Perhaps one might be his father as there aren't a lot of other options. I thought you might be able to shed some light on this for me as he may be part of the Hearn family tree. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Hi maybe the saying "Black Irish" is because some hearns are black. I have no information about my family. My grandfather said he made twin brothers and that his name was Coda that sound indian to me. He told me that Hearn was a german irish mixed name. Thats all I know. In your studies did you find a black side of the Hearn family. I was wondering if it was like most blacks family a names they got from their slave owners. I'm not race crazy but I'm trying to find my roots.I would love to meet Hearn black and white and what ever race they maybe. My great grandfather: Harry J Hearn, Grandfather: Harry J Hearn Jr, Father: Harry J Hearn III
Harry Hearn and family resided in Georgia and owned a plantation and land now known as Lake Hearn with business park aptly named Lake Hearn Business Park on Lake Hearn Dr.
I know that we were known as "Black Irish" and were at one time horse thieves and united against the Irish slave owners...From all the "stories" I was told, our family / clan were known as warriors who were loyal and always fought against injustice. The name Hearn was synonomous with strength and was a well respected family who stuck together and overcame all adversity by doing so. There must be some truth in this as our name can be translated as "Steed" and "Lords"... Horse Masters...Cool! Hope this helps....

Hi, I've stumbled across your web-site while researching my own family tree. I'm a novice genealogist who has had some great luck on the internet. Presently I'm gathering all I can before heading of to the local Mormon research centre to confirm and put it all together. Found a common ancestor under your Margaret Deborah Hearns heading. My great great grandfather was James Mclean Bell son of William Bell IV and Esther Wheeler. Thanks to your site I can now add in some more info. I thank you greatly and look forward to taking some more time to browse through your great web-site.

Hello Heather, I was able to locate Thomas Elliot Hearns and Annie Bertha Walker in Napanee. They had two children in Napanee that I can find and they were Amey Ellen Hearns born 16 January, 1903 and Frank Calvin Hearns born 28 September, 1905. I would like to see how they fit into our Hearn family tree but need a little more information. Do you know whether they stayed in Napanee or moved elsewhere in Ontario? Do you happen to know who the father of Thomas Elliot Hearns was? We have alot of Thomas Hearns in our family. You can email me directly to my email address. Thanks.
Sincerely
Bonnie Hearn Miller

I am still, all these years later, trying to sort out the various Thomas'. 1880 Missouri census shows a Thomas Hurns born 1853, Canada, father Canada, mother Ireland. And, a Dugald Hurns who died ca. 5/17/1902 in St. Louis, MO--this was application for burial permit - but 1990 correspondence from a descendant of Thomas & Drusilla Hearns states "Dugald died in 1902 in St. Louis and body brought back to Chatham for burial". In 1895, a burial permit was applied for in St. Louis 11/14/1895. Anyone have info concerning these? If memory serves me correctly 1841 Dugald Hearns s/o of Dugald and Jane had a son also named Thomas.

I am so exited to find this site and info. My family were all from the Tamworth, Napanee area of Ont. and my sis and I have just really gotten into tracing our Bell roots. Now I find I am also a Hearns and Campbell [and Carscallen on the Bell side] I love history and reading about what was happening back around the early years of our nations founding and then I find out I'm part of a loyalist family. How exciting is that. I've also always felt totally at home in Canada even though most of my Canadian relatives died when I was young. Anyhow thanks for all the great information. You have gotten me so much farther in my search. Glad to have some family roots together. God Bless all . Kate

Thank you for this link, it would be interesting if I could ever connect that we are part of the same family tree. Sincerely, Joanna Hearn Perensovich

The first ancestor I found came to America between 1850 and 1860. He came first with his older son who vanished and never was heard from again. We think his name was Thomas but no proof. He had two other children, John Henry and Margaret. They came with a family named Moran. John married Margaret Moran and Margaret married William Byron. That started a feud with the older son because Byron was older. That is what started it all.

Comments:
I am looking for Sarah Hearns/Hearn who married George Howes/Howse/House/Hows in Cork, Ireland in the very early 1800's - probably somewhere near Bandon. Sarah would be my 4th great-grandmother. I think she may have died in Ireland before the rest of the family came to Canada. George & Sarah had several children born in Cork - George (1804 - married Eliza Bennett in Cork), Thomas (1814), Margaret (1820 - married John Good in Cork), Mary (about 1826), Francis (1827), John (1831) & Sarah (1832). The whole family left Ireland in 1838 and went to New York State for a few years and I have found them listed on the 1840 census in New York. Sarah Hearns is not listed, so I'm assuming that she died prior to 1838 or on the way over on the ship. By 1843, the family had moved to Ontario, Canada and were living in the Ernestown - Bath area near Kingston.
Anyone with information on this family can contact me direcly by email. Any help would be very much appreciated. I would really like to find out more about Sarah and her family in Ireland.
Thanks very much.

Still surfing this site and all others looking for which Thomas is who & father to my 2nd great grandmother, Jane Herns (as our family spells it)-a problem is that 2nd great grandfather "named relatives" who are known daughter of Gilbert and sons known to be sons of brother, Josiah. Still searching when/how name became "Hurns" in Kent County and if the Josiah Hurns, born 1849 who md. Emily in Michigan and is living in Nebraska by 1880 is connected to our Hurns. And, I am still searching for who Mary Hayes Hearns is who is buried in Kent Co. cemetery (by OCFA listings) but can't find her in any published Kent Co. Cemetery listings. I suspect that she may be wife #1 of Ebenezer if she is not a wife of the son Thomas, who went off to Michigan at one time. Merry Christmas, Boxing Day, Happy Holidays and all that to the He/ar/u/y/ns cousins!

Since my last message of the 28.09.03. I have since found my father Charles Joseph Hearns born 27th May 1954 and died 25th January 2003. Sadly i was just a few months to late to meet him before he died. So now i have to carry on searching and have found the following. Charles was born in Dublin, his mother was Mary Frances Hearns (believe she was know as May) and his adopted father was Patrick John Hearns, they lived in Ballyfermot, Dublin in 1957 and the other address i have is Catterick, North Yorkshire were i was born. I believe that i still have a great aunt and maybe more family still in Ireland and also I have a half brother and sister somewhere in the UK.
Charles has two half brothers Gary & Larewnce and a half sister Patrica. I believe that Gary may have something to do with the army and maybe around the Darlington area, UK. If anyone is able to help me anymore i would be most grateful.
Many Thanks Sara Foster (nee Hearns)

Earliest known ancestor John Bartley CT -1641
Comments:
I am descended from Isaiah Bartley who was the father of Janet and Catherine Bartley who married two of Thomas Hearns sons, Gilbert and Josiah. I thought it was interesting that Thomas's wife was given as Deborah Campbell. The mother of Janet and Catherine was an Eleanor Campbell, (not Catherine Fox as reported on some other sites.) She like your Deborah seems difficult to positively connect to her parents. It seems likely that her father was named John as Isaiah and Eleanor named their second son John and the Bartley family were consistent in naming the first son for the paternal grandfather and the second for the maternal grandfather. Prior to coming to Upper Canada in 1784 the Bartley family lived in Dutchess County, which borders on Putnam County, for about 70 years. I am curious as to whether there might have been a relationship between the wives of Thomas Hearns (Deborah) and Isaiah Bartley (Eleanor).

Regards,
Brian Bartley UE

Very nice Website. My branch of the family descended from William Hearne b. 1627 and settled on the Eastern Shore of Maryland 1688 and then moved south, first to Montgomery Co., NC, then to GA around 1795, where they remained until my father moved to Chattanooga, TN in the early 1930's. I have a fairly complete lineage, which I have felt I needed to compile since I, and a first cousin whom I have never met, are the end of this branch. I had 4 daughters, one of whom is named Laurie.

I really enjoyed your website! I don't know a lot about my ancestory, but have become more interested in it now that I have gotten older. I currently live in Houston, TX, but most of my family comes from either Delaware or Baltimore, MD. I do know that my great-grandfather was a doctor in Baltimore, sometime before and after the 1930's. He had a son, my grandfather, Clifford Burton Hearn, who worked on the Manhattan Project during WWII, and had 3 childern. One of those childern was dilivered in childbirth by my great-grandfather and who was my father, A.C. Hearn, named after his grandfather. CB Hearn had quite an interesting history, including working for the Ford Motor Co., driving one of the first T-bird's in the 1950's and being the one to hire Lee Iacoca, and also capturing a spy during WWII. I also know of long lost great(?)-uncle that taught at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, a prestigious music school.
Anyway, my current family situation is rather fractious and I would love to hear about information that you may have about how we got here. I've heard that we have been here since before the Rev. War, but I don't know wether or not that is true. Anyway, love the page and look forward to hearing from anyone sometime!
Todd

Earliest known ancestor Sarah Hearn (born about 1810)
Comments:
I have recently begun researching my maternal grandfather's side of my family. I hit a snag because his mother was an illegitimate child but then found an 1880 census from Waupaca County that outlined the family further.

My GGG grandmother was Sarah Hearn who was born in Ireland in 1809 0r 10. Her daughter was Margaret Hearn born about 1839 in Canada. Her illigitimate daughter was Helena Hearn who was born in 1866. She also had a son named John Hearn. Margaret later married Nobel Brundage and they raised the children in Farmington, Waupaca County WI.

Helena married John Knight in 1883. Helena was my great grandmother and their son Earl Thomas Knight was my grandfather.

If there is any link with other Hearns out there I would love to be able to continue my search. So far I have not been able to pin down the immigration date but it would have been around 1850.

Very interesting site, Good Work.
My Great Grandfather was George Washington Hearn, our dates differ by a couple of years from yours. Possibly an error? We do not have any of his father's siblings names (who was also George Hearn) and we do not have any of his siblings. Do you have any census records showing where they lived or any other way that we could possibly connect this family?
Our George Washington Hearn was born 31 Jan 1861 at Guelph, Ontario. He was married to Fanny Mogg 13 Jun 1884 at Southampton, Bruce Co., Ontario. Babtized 29 Apr 1894 (LDS)Richland, Ogemaw Co., Michigan. Died 29 Jan 1932 at Preeceville, Saskatchewan.
We are very interested in hearing from you.

Hello Hello from Vancouver, BC! I am of a branch of Hearns (the name Hearn) that settled in Edmonton Alberta in varying times. My dad knows far more about this side of the family than I, and I have been fascinated to learn about the irish side. So far I have learned that my family was from County Clare, and that our name is a huge long word in gaelic that means "Horse Lord". I have also uncovered our crest (beautiful isn't it?) and found out that the Herons represent "service". All I know is that an irish lady at a bus stop locally once just by LOOKING at me KNEW that my family was from that area of Ireland... which quite surprised me! Anyways, it's lovely to see other members of the family thriving and being as fascinated as I am about our roots! As I find out more over time I will share the info!

HUGE HUGZ!

Amy

My grandmother's maiden name was Hearn. She was born January 15, 1910. I know very little of her family history. She had a brother, Gene, and a sister, Norma. These Hearns lived in and around Houston, Texas, where my mother was born, and in Port Arthur, Texas, where my mother grew up. Do you know if there is a connection between your family and mine? This is my first foray into researching family geneology. I have a long way to go. I admire tremendously what you have accomplished in researching the Hearns.

Firstly that my aunt Joe's name was Pybus not Pylus and I have no idea where my aunt Rose my mother Hazel's sister got the name Grace. On the family document I have the girls names were Mary (it was never Marie legally only in her mind she decided Mary was to plain), Violet Josaphene (we called her Joe or Dot), Clarabell Rose (and I can remember being with them, my mother Hazel, aunt Joe, and my aunt Rose and them all laughing and Rose saying who wanted to be named after a cow, and my mothers name was actually Anne Hazel. The story went that my great grandmother Sarah Baker who never liked her daughter in law my grandmother Matilda Baker (nee Rameau) was the one who went up to the clerks office to register the births and changed the order of the names to the way she wanted which none of the girls knew till much later in life, my mother did not know till she had to send for her birth certificate in her late forties and it was at that time the we first found out that her mothers maiden name was Rameau not Rammond as we had thought for years. Just a little of what I know, I have no idea of who I am talking to but if you are related to Rose Hearn then we must also be related, Bill Ellegett

Hello Folks,
My Grandfather was Michael Francis HEARN. Born 1876 in Tipperary Ireland. When he was three the family came to England. I do not know where. At sixteen he tried to join the army but was to young. Undaunted he borrowed his cousins birth certificate ( who was eighteen and also Michael Francis ) and joined the army, so, he was always two years older in the army than his true birth, and as he used his cousins birth certificate he also had to use his cousins name of LYONS.
He Married Amelia Eleanor ROBSON on May 1st 1904. They had four or five children. I know of four, Elsie 1905,Mary 1907 who died in childhood, Eleanor known as Hettie 1909 and Catherine 1911. Catherine was my Mother, she married my father, William Cordwell, on 5th December 1931. I was born on 15th March 1932, so it was a close call. :-)
My grandfathers Parents were Patrick & Mary HEARN. Mary was a LYONS before Marriage.
I have not yet been able to locate where they lived after coming to England or where they lived in Ireland other than Tipperary.
I am the last of my line of Cordwell's, I would like to find more about my grandfather and his family before it is to late. As you can see I am seventy years old now and though very active it can not go on for ever, one must breakdown sometime, but I will do what I can while I can.:-)
Regards.
William.

Comments:
A thoroughly fascinating site! There are so many links here related to my ancestry; Huffman [the surname of Michael McCabe's spouse], Parks, Wager, and Napanee [where the Rendell's still reside]. I have added your site to my list of favorites, so I can return and make a more detailed search for possible connections. Many of the references you cited apply to my own family resarch, so my sincere thanks for publishing your genealogy!
