I really like this site. I love the old south and I am fascinated by these shacks that represent it. It is sad to think that these reminders of days gone by are dissapearing due to old age and new development, so I plan to visit Emanuel County as soon as I am old enough to drive. Peace to the south.

Thanks for the look, I am a proud descendant of a long line of Georgia Crackers,,,It is music to my ears. Those were the days when people had to have God in their hearts just to survive and that they did. And we are here today as living proof of their faith and hard work. God bless us all. regards L.Siemen

Great photos -- thanks! I am an architect originally from California. Moved here from the Northeast and love Florida. I am trying to learn more about the vernacular architecture of our region.

John- I didn't realize anyone else photographed these homes besides me! I thought I was a little weird for appreciating this heritage, so I'm glad I found this site. I'm in Bryan county near Pembroke, and we have a few of these structures left. Your pictures are better than mine, however. Thanks for the inspiration!

Enjoyed the photos. Thanks for sharing them with us. Those old houses are part of our heritage in Tennessee, also. I recall my folks telling about tarpaper roofs, and the privilege they felt when it was changed to metal.

I don't believe I had ever heard this term or have seen any information on this subject, so I thank you.
I would also like to remind people that these houses were built probably 100 to 150 years ago and some of them look like they could have been quite homie. :o)But time does this to all things if not maintained, Nice Job Audrey, and the photos are well done. Bill Cook
