In the history section (Ballochroy Glen), I note with interest that a McQuilkan family was part of the mass emigration of 1851. The family was in fact that of Duncan McQuilkan and Jean McKinley. They are my great great grandparents, who later changed their family name to Wilkinson when they lived in Ontario, Canada. I would love to hear from anyone with more information information about the emigration of these 24 families and of course, more specific information about the ancestors of this family

Checking out other Mackinlays. Our first ancestral Mackinlay to arrive in Australia in 1852 was a David McKinlay, my Grandfather's grandfather. Spelling differences are rampant. My Grandfather spelt his name three different ways: McKinlay, McKinley and Mackinlay. His younger brother was a McKinlay, his youngest brother a Mackinlay, and a sister MacKinlay! Strangely enough, Livingstone appears as a given name (maiden name of his mother) and one of my grandsons also bears it, quite coincidentally, as my daughter liked the sound of it. Love the site! Thankyou.

Excellent put together web site. Well done! I have read through it with great interest. My middle name is Spelt McKinlay which in Fife - Scotland is considered the correct spelling. How ever, it was good to see the different spellings. It makes for a colourful history indeed.
Well done.

A very well put together site. I spent a lot of hours reading through the site last night. My ancestors came from the Isle of Mull, going back through the opr that still existI find that our name was originally spelled McIannlaich. On being cleared from Mull and sailing to Canada (PEI) In 1808 our name was changed to MacKinley and eventually Mckinley. I just wonder if the original spelling was not the gaelig for Mackinlay Thanks Karl

I have done considerable research on Finlaysons of Skye and Lochalsh, with professional help, and am of the firm opinion that Finlaysons, and also Mackinlays, are in no substantial way connected to any Farquarsons. I can go back about 7 generations to see my family name anglicized from MacFinlay to Finlayson around 1700. Not long before this the likely changed their "surname" with each generation, and were likely of the same stock as MacRaes. Notwithstanding, there are references to the chief of the small clan Finlayson of Lochalsh and also a theory they were associated with the missionaries of Iona.
The big test is to see how many Finlaysons or MacKinlays were born, married or died around Farquarson territory, compared to other places. The answer is none or very few.

I am a Nova Scotia MacKinlay born in Yarmouth in 1946 - my dad Allan Francis MacKinlay was a school teacher and his father William Henry MacKinlay had MacKinlay's Bookstore in Yarmouth but originally came from Halifax - he opened the bookstore after selling newspapers on the train from Halifax to Yarmouth. His father was John Alexander MacKinlay who came over from Scotland with his two brothers in the mid 1880's but I could never find out their names or where in Scotland they came from. His parents were James and Mary MacKinlay but that's all I know. Maybe there is someone out there related to me who does.

Your interest in the origin and connections with surnames, I share. I've done a lot of work on the Finlaysons of Skye and elswhere. But remember, for the common folk of the highlands, surnames only became fixed very recently (as late as 19th cent with some). For patronymically derived names such as Finlays son or Davids son, they originated in numerous places. So not necessarily connected, just like the trade derived name Smith. The anglicization of names goes way back (eg implanted protestant clerics) and Gaelic was really never an official language for legal matters, etc.

A wonderful and excellent site. It was a pleasure to sit and read. Much I have read before , but it is still superb to see it on the web..congratulations. I am proud of my heritage my surname and my family...guess I had better have a son to go with my daughter to keep the name alive!!
As for my family line
My father John (Jack) Davis McKinlay was born in Glasgow Scotland (Springfield road I believe near Glasgow Celtic football ground)> He had brothers named William (Bill), Robert (Bert) James(Jim) and a sister Helen. All were born of my Grandmother and Grandfather who strangely or uniquely so I am led to believe were both also named Mckinlay prior to marriage (well at least thats what I recall being told). My Grandfather was named Halbert and my Granmother was called Margaret. My dad John Davis McKinlay was born in 1922, served in the Royal Navy. The rest of the family at some point, I believe after my grandfather died (except my uncle Bill)left and emigrated to Canada.
Having visited this site I guess I will now have to go and varify all of the above details so that I can pass them onto my family. Keep up the good work

I have many early McKinlay pictures which I plan to give to Mrs. Robert Cernew. I am preparing a notebook with copies of the pictures and Uncle Will's family tree which I will probably place in the Giles County Virginia Historical Society Museum (the Emmons family settled in Giles). Will be glad to send you pictures when I have them identified.
